Ridiculously capable luxury for 6 grand | BMW 730d Review - Beards n Cars
I've wanted to get my hands on a BMW 7-Series to review in BnC for quite some time, and have always loved the styling on the 1990s E38 series cars in particular. These F-Generation models (F01, F02, F03 and F04) are also probably the final generation of the big Beemer flagship which I actually like the look of. So naturally when this 2011 730d SE came up at Affordable Prestige, I had to take it out for a spin - particularly when the price tag is a frankly ridiculous £6k. Cheap flagship luxury cars are nothing new, in fact they are some of the most common cars to find dropping into this kind of price range, but a major change which I think makes these cars more deserving than ever of serious consideration is - efficiency.
Gone are the days of a big two tonne luxury limo equating to a 'gas guzzling' time bomb with unnecessarily fiddly and overengineered motors and quality of life quirks, making some of them an acquired taste. This again is a prime example of how times have changed: A big, handsome, comfortable BMW with ride quality and space to rival a Bentley, but with a 400 lbft (540 Nm) diesel engine which barely turns 1000 rpm when cruising, while returning near enough double the economy of what you'd typically expect from these cars. Its essentially a limo with the frugality of a hatchback, and naturally being a diesel engine, takes significantly higher mileage in its stride more capably than the vast majority of equivalent petrol engines would.
Its about more than just fuel economy and torque though. Everything about the 730d, even as a relatively 'simple' trim level of 7-Series, still feels special, clean, stylish and appealing. The brakes are excellent, acceleration more than adequate, acres of space for passengers and luggage, and handling is spot on for a car of its size. Soundproofing is good, and the interior is well laid out and classy, particularly now in the age of big screens and minimalist boredom. For six grand it's an astonishingly lovely driving experience, particularly if you plan to commute long distances...

The most affordable supercar around | Bentley Continental GT Review - Beards n Cars
มุมมอง 1.5K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
I realised recently that the only major variant of the iconic first shape Bentley W12 series which I hadn't yet reviewed is this one - the original 552 bhp Continental GT! Well of course we had to change that, and as it happens the folks at APC have one up for sale at a price point which perfectly illustrates the thoughts and conclusions which I've come to about these cars. For all of the perfo...
I bought one so you don't have to | Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow Review - Beards n Cars

For many car fans and people with dreams of financial success in general, few things so succinctly signal reaching 'that' level than owning your very own Rolls Royce. Well over a century of being THE name in automotive luxury for most people worldwide has to mean something right?... Well yes and no. In some ways and with certain cars they certainly do earn their reputation for impressive engine...
Perfect Japanese classic for beginners? - 1978 Toyota Celica (A40) XT 2000 Review - Beards n Cars

I've bought another classic! And this time its my first Japanese retro ride in the form of a 1978 Toyota Celica XT2000 Liftback from the RA40 era, complete with a Japan-spec 18R-U 2.0 litre motor, 3 speed auto transmission, and seems to be one of only 3 or so on the road here in the UK! As some will know from the channel already, I've never been particularly into Celica's, but after spotting a ...
Does the BMW E30 actually live up to the hype? - 1989 BMW 320i Review - Beards n Cars
มุมมอง 15K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
Few German performance cars are quite as hyped these days as the E30 generation BMW 3 Series, but with that hype comes not only the likely chance of prices spiralling upward for mostly nostalgic reasons, as can be seen with the vastly overinflated JDM market, but also the risk of these cars not living up to the hype when it comes to actually owning and driving them... Naturally then I jumped at...
The best budget car in South Africa? - Toyota Starlet Xs - Beards n Cars

While visiting South Africa again recently, we of course rented another car for the week, and this time around it was one of what is possibly the best (some may even say THE best) affordable daily runabouts in the sub R300,000 segment, especially in its R226,000 entry level form even when brand new - the facelift shape Toyota Starlet. The one which we spent our week in Durban with in particular...

The Daihatsu Sirion isn't exactly synonymous with most people's idea of a performance car, but as any who know my taste in super obscure fast cars in the sphere of Gran Turismo will know - I legitimately love the Daihatsu Storia X4. A rally-ready monster which absolutely dominated the sub 1000 cc class in Japanese rally events. This incarnation is a 2003 Daihatsu Sirion Rally 2, and although no...

Cadillac Escalade ESV - Why I bought a Mammoth Yank SUV as my new daily driver - Beards n Cars

The Cadillac Escalade is of course America's premiere luxury SUV, the Stateside equivalent of a Range Rover if you will. But with its massive physical proportions, large L92 6.2 litre Vortec V8 engine, potentially excessive fuel usage by UK standards...

      I've actually started an Instagram series (that_highroller) covering the story of how mine came to be, but overall I knew the risks, as most of my purchases have always been risky, in the case of this one clearly being cared for by amateurs made all of those risks far worse. Turned out fine since its not a waste to turn it into something new, but still

      Electrical gremlins are usually the most visible issue with many luxury cars, classic and modern for that matter. In the case of one of these I think I'd trust it more than something like a Bentley or Rolls though, either from the equivalent era, or just price region these days

      I'd definitely give the Jag X351 better points on interior design, and you do get more performance from the equivalent diesel model (270 bhp/440 torque, 5.9 second 0-60 in the case of a 3.0 diesel XJ) Overall the BMW definitely feels more sturdy and I'd say a smoother ride too (X350/X358 is the smoothest XJ for me) and at the same price point I'd say the XJ feels like a heart choice, the 7-Series more of a head choice If it were my money, I'd choose this over an X351, but not over an X358, since I'm a sucker for the last of the retro-modern Jaguar styling. X358 is nowhere near the BMW on efficiency though so all are lovely cars

    Good timing, I am looking for a cheap barge! Did you really say 90% of a Rolls Royce Ghost?! I had a 535d F11 which is the same platform as this and didn't find it sporty enough (fast, but not feelsome like a Jag) so perhaps a 7 is worth a look. I would normally gravitate to an S-Class as the default barge choice, W221 is top of my list. But I could be persuaded away...

    • @beardsncars
      @beardsncars 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I can't speak to comparing it to a Ghost specifically as I haven't driven one tbh, moreso saying that the car delivers what most people would expect from a 'Rolls-Royce experience' in a general sense. Quiet, comfortable, glides along with effortless performance and big presence with plenty of space. As far as the S-Class, I definitely want to try one out as it has the best chance of being another option to something like this with the same advantages. I wouldn't call this one sporty at all really, but definitely an effortless glide. I'm more of a Merc guy generally, but have found myself being more impressed with Beemers in most cases of trying them out interestingly...

    Great review! While I agree with your point about a diesel car having a better chance of being more reliable, it also lacks the soul of a N/A petrol 6cyl engine. You should try an early f10 with the petrol I6. It's like having a 7series and a sporty 3series (with a push of a button) merget into one. Diesel is also worse for the environment according to the governments, so I suppose it won't be long until diesels are banned from entering certain "low emissions zones"

    • @beardsncars
      @beardsncars 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      ULEZ will definitely be a factor for city folks, but in large rural areas like here in Somerset its rarely ever an issue. And although diesels do usually lack some character compared to petrols (the 640d is a major exception) in the case of cars like this, non performance and all about quiet comfort, diesels are a perfect match. Low revving, all torque, effortless driving

    I had the Arnage for a few years, only 30k miles, 2006, was the best looking car and fastest ever. Felt amazing to drive - beautiful interior but… Terrible reliability… the security system a mess, alarm going off at all the wrong times (v embarrassing), batteries (there are two in the boot) draining themselves all the time… costly AF. And very hard to sell on. Would not do it again, but was my dream to own. Sometimes the dream of ownership is better than reality (my neighbours Honda started to look pretty attractive the way it always started up as expected).

    Of course, there is nothing more nerve-wrecking than a badly maintained (trashy) Silver Shadow, so I agree with you in this point. I drive a Shadow since 2012 - and never had problems with the rat trap (no leaks, no brake problems etc), just to mention your example. The three "failures to proceed" in those twelve years were caused entirely by my own faults ( bad soldering / old petrol / not on starter solenoid not fastened properly) .- that's it. Brilliant and enjoyed this refreshingly truthfully detailed unbiased review and very well done! I purchased my 55 in 2010 with 27k being just 5 years old with 4 previous owners ! I was somewhat hesitant in the purchase however being a main dealer Mercedes of Bath I went ahead and with confidence. After 15 years of ownership with 41k I’ve had many criticisms of the “Hairdressers car” comment, generally these comments come from someone who’s never driven one of couldn’t afford one. I have been tempted to sell the car but never had the guts as know I will regret it. My brother has a TVR but he never uses it for power but just sound. Items attended to in 15 years of ownership. 1 x Radiator Fan replacement 2 x rear tyres 1 x window washer pump 2 x Rocker Cover Gaskets. Roof mechanism micro switches required a drop of WD40 that I did myself, most comments were that it will be a very expensive repair job. Always do your own research!! All in all it’s been a very affordable car to run, I drive it only when I want to and that’s when it’s dry. I have kept mine as factory had the wheels refurbished and doors re sprayed as the leading edge had chipped from previous owners that I didn’t spot when buying. The car is in fantastic condition and garaged. I Still enjoy the driving just as must as I did in 2010. As the R171 55 is a less common sight these days it now is a talking point with appreciation.

    Bought a 2015 MSport 640D recently. Agree its a brilliant car - huge amount of car for the money. Though the 60mpg you talk about is never going to happen. I'm getting 42mpg , still great for a 3 lite 6 cylinder beast! I'm 6'4" tall so zero leg room in the rear seat behind me. One thing I've noticed is it's an insanely long car..almost 5 metres, so it is pretty much as long as a UK car parking bay, be prepared to stick out a bit! The sound in Sports mode is great. I was pleasantly surprised by the ride quality on 20inch wheels...ditch the RFs tyres btw. Road tax is now £210.

    One of the best open and honest reviews I have seen on this car. I absolutely love the R171 SLK55, and after having my previous 07 R171 SLK55 totaled in a head-on collision, I'm having a hard time finding another car that is anywhere near comparable to what this offers. More than likely I will get into another one. Just no comparison to anything else out there! - 2+2 with hardtop convertible - lightweight & physically small - EXCELLENT and super reliable + easy to work on M113 V8 - Great MPG for all that power potential under the hood - The list goes on....

    Amazing design design on the R171, true enough. I have the smaller engined SLK R171 in a super charged non AMG derivative, and it does me just fine. With top end around 150MPH and 0-60MPH in under 7 secs. Yes, I know, these are still fast cars. It handles adequately and is really quick enough! BUT the the 55AMG is the penultimate in my book for a cost effective demi super car experience! I have considered a Boxster S or Cayman. However the 55AMG and the 'apparent' practical running costs might be a future option - as the 'extra' vehicle for me. There's other vehicular responsibilities to family relatives needing MY additional Audi 'Q' SVU at the moment. SO, it is a case of:- if / when I decide to graduate from my beloved (standard) R171 SLK. This ultra reliable & economical SLK, I have had for many years, what a car it is. Thought I would share before I make the leap to a retro 55AMG or Boxster / Cayman. This is a dilemma indeed, I have had for a few months now. . . Either a Porsche or another Merc SLK (as I have had 6 'contigual' Merc cars over the past 25 years.) No better than the devil you know, one might say? ? ? A battle of the Germans within my head! Please know I've worked very hard in life to earn my guilty pleasures over the past 30 years! Any first hand Porsche 'experiental' info would be much appreciated. Many thanks. . . Dr. Rob.

    I have always had a love affair with AM. It has always been the dream. Never did I consider that actually getting one for sub 40k, I can actually do this. And with young kids, this just makes sense! Super dad car! Just need to watch 100 videos on how to buy a 10 year old super car and what costs I might need to prepare for!!

    I had a DB9 2005 for 5 years, loved it. But now I have a Rapide 2011 and like it better. Better ground clearance, bit more driver space and rear seats that are useful though a tight fit. Just enough to pick friends for dinner and short day trips. It is a gorgeous car that people love. Overall performance is about the same as a DB9. Aston only built 4979 Rapides but it shares so many parts with the DB9 that parts will not be an issue. I agree the Rapide is a fantastic car at a good price point currently. I think as the years go by it will hold a fair value and be somewhat collectible.
