The best budget car in South Africa? - Toyota Starlet Xs - Beards n Cars

  • While visiting South Africa again recently, we of course rented another car for the week, and this time around it was one of what is possibly the best (some may even say THE best) affordable daily runabouts in the sub R300,000 segment, especially in its R226,000 entry level form even when brand new - the facelift shape Toyota Starlet.
The one which we spent our week in Durban with in particular was the Starlet Xs model, based as with all Starlet's of this generation on the Suzuki Baleno, but far more common to see on the road, and with a much broader dealer network for parts and servicing. But with the Suzuki holding higher values on the used market, and offering a slightly higher spec for the money, is this widely praised budget level Toyota really as good as many motoring journalists say?
Let's head out to the streets of Durban to try out this R261,000 automatic version of the 2022-onward Toyota Starlet Xs and give our combined thoughts on the best and perhaps bad points of this super affordable city runabout...and of course be sure to check out our other reviews for the Nissan Magnite and Toyota Corolla Quest from previous visits!

All I needed was this 15min video thank you for all the specifics and the details. While doing my graduate program the company I was working I was driving a starlet as a company car, I personally loved it, and I am planning in buying it as my first car next month, thank you for your review.

I will go for a brand new one and thank you also for the reviews made on the passengers side it. I personally think I can live with all the "downsides" this car has.

Imagine my shock seeing that the Starlet still exists...I actually thought they had been out of production for years! Quite interesting...🤔

Probably the Quest tbh, longer shape with more space, but would probably be fairly close between the two. I liked the look of the Nissan Magnite more, but bit small as well
