Swift Sport ZC32S Ticking Sound 3 Month/4000 Mile Update
This is somewhat a highly requested video so here you go! I've been taking it easy and going along with the ticking this entire time and considering it's been a quarter of a year it's time to assess the situation again!

    Sounds exactly the same as mine. I’m on 93k, just started doing it more noticeably. It definitely is the valve clearances lad. It’s not the timing chain. That would slap a lot more, I’m an engineer for reference. Get your valves adjusted and you’ll be golden

      I thought so, people have told me timing chain but like you say it'll be slapping it's nuts off lol. Still hasn't got worse in all this time to this day, when I can I'll have the valves adjusted, should be able to do it now as I won't be dailying it.

    Have you checked your valve clearances with a set of feeler gauges. Checking the clearances is fairly easy, you insert feeler gauges to acertain the clearance between the bucket and the base circle of the cam with the came lobe pointing up. You have already removed your cam cover in a precious video so were in the right place. A tight clearance could cause the vave to remain open by a small amount which would cause a loss of compression or in the case of exhaust valves particularly, cause the seat to burn. A too loose clearance will cause the valve not to open fully by a few thou (so what) but will create the tappety sound as the cam takes up the clearance between it and the bucket. The shims are under the buckets and can be removed using a lever tool without removing the cams so I believe on these engines. A thicker shim will overcome the issue where the clearance is too great, conversely a thinner shim will cure the problem where there is too little clearance. If it sounds tappety, then it's likely caused by to large a tappet clearance, while irritating this isn't the greatest problem, a tight clearance could cause damage but you'd never know untill you got a misfire because it will be quiet. Do the measurements of clearance and you will find out whether you have a problem or not.

    • @wallsworkshop
      @wallsworkshop 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I haven't used feeler gauges yet, It's been back together and running as is since this previous video. No further signs of it getting any worse at all. I'm hopeful that soon I'll have the time to go through this and actually check the clearances properly as I won't be using it daily. I will definitely refer back to your comment, thank you for this 🙏

    As with another poster, I know I mentioned shimming the cam followers (mine's a low mileage 1.2, that sounds tappety on start up some days - not sure if they're hydraulic and so quieten after a few minutes of use, because mine seem to quieten, or if they're solid), however I didn't recall you'd done so many miles? Let's face it, although listed on the service schedule, the tappets aren't often shimmed by main dealers imho, they fudge the issue. As you've found, it may be worth changing the RC gasket periodically too, to stop the bolts seizing in place. But I digress, timing chain, guides and tensioners come into the picture too, with that sort of mileage mate. Not sure of service intervals though🤔 Oh and main dealer, last time, put in thinner oil (used on later Swifts) in mine, Comma et al, as does the manual, recommends thicker, higher viscosity oil. Main Dealers, only sell you what they've bought in bulk. I know that you change your own oil, so it's not a factor, but my comments may alert others. Regular engine flushes seem to help these days, they keep timing chains, followers and turbos in better condition for longer. Most main dealers don't do a EO flush though, surprise, surprise. One local garage swears by it with a timing chain car/engined, I'm inclined to agree too. Have you tried a long screwdriver, resting on your jaw against the cylinder head and/or timing chaim cover? Better still a stethoscope or higher tech version? Then you'd know where the sound is coming from. If you cant diagnose or decide? Id get the shims done (you and your dad could do the work, not sure if specialist tools are required), if that stops the noise? Job done. Id recommend engine flushes on a fairly regular basis for the sake of the timing chain etc.

    • @wallsworkshop
      @wallsworkshop 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m hoping it’s not chain or tensioner related as I’ll be in for a hefty bill there as I can’t tackle that myself with the place and kit that I currently have. I also do regulars engine flushes every other service (servicing between 4-5k miles) That’s my next move to get a stethoscope and listen in on the rocker cover so I can hopefully determine where exactly it comes from. Specialist tools are required to do the work too sadly and I cannot for the life of me find the Suzuki kit. Closest is Lexus and Toyota but that requires modifying before using on an M series engine. I reckon it will stop the noise but I’ll have to pay through the nose to get it done I reckon, nobody wants to touch it

    • @musoseven8218
      @musoseven8218 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@wallsworkshop Hi buddy, I was thinking of you and your motor today. I think it's the tappets 🤞👍🙏 mine are a little noisier even with low miles. Main Dealer and local garage are now recommending 0W-20 fully synthetic (iirc originally it was 5W 30 to start with), I'm not sure if that's a good or not so good move. Mine has an engine flush every 10k miles. I'm trialing a new garage (my partner has used them) and they seem clued up but still knew nothing about shimming Suzuki top ends. It's common practice on many cars, even back Alphas from the 1980s. Have you tried looking at or contacting tool companies such as Sealey or Sykes-Pickavant (SP used to do specialist tools for engine work) to see if they can help. There's clearly a need/demand someone must make the tool. I wish we could get hold of a workshop manual/Haynes manual too. I'm not sure why there are no hookie ones on disc, for MK3's etc on eBay tbh The actual job isn't hard with the right tools and the right size shims (unless of course Suzuki has gone completely off piste). I hope that helps 🤞👍🙏💜😊

  • @J88AGT
    @J88AGT 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    To me it just sounds like a typical timing chain tick from any vehicle, as cant hear the best over camera anyways, they do unfortunately make noise and all swifts do, mine has 16000 miles on it and it ticks from cold and I've asked a mate who has a swift and his also does the same which has about 35000 miles on it , as long as its not rattling which would indicate a stretched chain or failed tensioner then i wouldn't worry also try 5w30 oil if you don't use that already , good video 👍👍

    • @wallsworkshop
      @wallsworkshop 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah it’s not the best over the camera sadly, defo not stretched the chain and it’s not rattling I’ve said to quite a few that suggested chain that mine is tight as a nut. I’m not so worried about it anymore it’s more annoying at this point lol. She already has 5w30 in her has done for the past few services now, nice one 👌👍

      As other posters and I've written, it could be timing chain and guides or the tappets need shimming (every 30k miles iirc). An engine flush might not go amiss and making sure you've the thicker viscosity oil too.

  • @fluxington
    @fluxington 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I haven't read all the previous comments (in previous videos) but my first thought (because I've been looking at service intervals recently) is timing chain, and you just said it in the video! 100k - 150k is when you should keep an eye on the noises from chain under normal conditions, but yours could have stretched.

      It could well have stretched slightly, when I had the rocker cover off and felt the chain it still felt tight as a nut but these m16s need to be absolutely bang on within their margins tbf. If I can determine it’s not valves I’ll be looking at the chain for sure

      Hi, no I didn’t have to disconnect the battery for this and as for the loose cables, I just cable tied them all up in a bundle behind the unit and left them unplugged, easy to access if I ever do need them

    I hope it happens, have no intention of replacing my current swift sport any time soon (in Australia) and will be perfectly happy to be patient and see what gets revealed over the next year or so. If it comes out around 2026 I'll likely be in the market for a new one by then so it'll be good timing!

    Hopefully getting one this week, I need some advice please mate, looking to get a custom exhaust, potentially the Cobra one, I need to know if a random garage will install this? I need to know where you got that spoiler because I need that, and I love the look of the splitter, any advice where to get that from? Never really modded a car before but I know the swift sport is one where I want to make it look very nice, ideally like yours tbf!

    • @wallsworkshop
      @wallsworkshop 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi mate, I’d say most would but a few are picky about it you’ll just have to shop around to see who will offer to install one. It’s a monster sport spoiler imported from Japan which I luckily snapped up on marketplace 😂 the splitter is on eBay and so is the diffuser on the back, they match. Hopefully that helps out! Haha yeah you’re v local to me then, a lot more local swifters are noticing this now hahaha

    it seems they are testing it in Japan it will be unveiled in September it will use an evolved k14d engine with 48v mild hybrid and 140-150hp mated to a 6mt or 6at gearbox (the same used in the zc33s)

    Interesting video mate🤫💜✌️😊 I wont hold my breath though. The UK is under WEF/CCP control, we need to break from that, before common sense and success prevail. Also pricing - Im no expert on the economy in Japan - when Dacia are putting out very good VFM cars? Why has Suzuki started charging so much? Is it greed? Or "you'll own nothing and be happy?" They're outpricing their welcome, myopic IMHO, as they're missing their target market segments.

Me neither I remember seeing a couple of bits saying it was down a bit but I’m nobody to make a concrete statement on it. Agree on the price too 30K AUD seems an awful lot for something that cost over 10 grand less 10 years ago for just an updated relatively similar vehicle if you get me
