10 Minutes To Better Pen Making - Advanced Segmenting - Mark Dreyer Featuring Mark James
Was lucky enough to get Mark James to share his ideas and techniques in the world of pen blank segmenting.
In this series of videos, I plan to take individual topics and explore them and discuss them 10 minutes at a time. I will use my 25 years as a pen maker to give tips and tricks on the topic. Each topic will only be 10 minutes. We will explore everything from kit and blank selection, to drilling, to turning and turning tools, finishing, and marketing and sales. If there is a topic you would like to see discussed, please leave me a comment. Thanks.

    It"s funny, the same message applies across many tools. If you are asking if the edge is dull, it is. Change it out. Learned this on my scroll saw, I have yet to break a blade, bit I have tossed a lot of them.

    Sometimes, ya just gotta use sandpaper for shaping. I just turned a coconut cast in clear resin blank that was probably 15+ years old. It was chipping out BAD. So bad that I KNEW if I kept going with the tool, one or more of the chips was going to reach all the way in to the coconut. Definitely slower than using a skew/spindle gouge/carbide, but it worked.

    Your videos are some of the best instructional turning videos that I have found on YT. I find that many videos don't really teach they say "So now we make it round" and that is the extent of the "instruction" with nothing about lathe speed, tool angle or any of the things that people need to know. Thank you.

    Sure, do waste a lot of material with your extremely over exaggerated eighth in cuts that are closer to half of an inch. Why not just set it up in a vise on the drill press? It works great for me 100% of the time and is way more stable. I also just use high-speed steel tools as long as they are sharp they work just fine. As far as the angels you get when you cut off the pieces from the main antler a belt or disc sander work just fine at squaring the ends up use the brass tube as the guide its pretty straight and square you have to glue it in anyway. Why not use it?

    • @markdreyer2865
      @markdreyer2865 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the suggestions. As for your technique - if it works for you then do it. The point of my channel is to give a starting point. Many people do not own a separate drill press as suggested. If you have the extra tool - please use it. The issue I found with the drill press is centering the antler on thin pieces. For me drilling on the lathe works easier for thin and thick pieces, and I like to use the same technique for all. As for the belt sander or disk sander - once again I tried to keep it with the same tools. If it works for you - do it. And once again thanks for the suggestions Either way thanks for watching and thanks for the suggestions for anyone else watching.

    As a relative newbie to pen turning, I learned today that a circular carbide tool like the East Wood Easy Finisher (just an example - not a plug) is pretty much a necessity for roughing out acrylic blanks. As a traditional wood turner, I eschewed carbide tools and thought I could get away with my gouges and such. In my hands, traditional tools can be used during the shaping process, but the circular carbide tool makes roughing out acrylics a MUCH more pleasant process than using traditional tools.

    I have done the same as you disclosed and have had great success. I noticed the blank was not straight, or at least it looked that way. I know that a bit more sanding may rectify that; however. I use the larger square head easy tool and I seem to get it a bit straighter. On acrylic pen blanks only, I turn the square tool just a very little and use the edge (or corner) of the square edge and I find that due to the reduced surface area of the cutter I am able to get zero chipout and a much smoother start to rounding the pen. Just a suggestion. I thank you so much for sharing.

    Hello, I watched your video, and I couldn't believe how well the round (finishing) tool did. My main question is what speed do you turn the acrylic? I am having a hard time on what speed to use. I have a general machine full size lathe, so I have several speeds to choose from. I am also amazed that you use the regular round and not negative cutter. Thank you so much for this video! I really don't have a tutor, so I come on here and watch videos, then I turn. Please respond when u can. Cynthia

    Thanks Mark for your informative Vid. I gave up turning - the dust was killing me. Have decided to return and turn Acrylic pens subject to one condition. Is dust an Issue?? Will appreciate your comments.

    • @markdreyer2865
      @markdreyer2865 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ray - first and foremost thanks for watching. Now to your question - and this is just my opinion. When it comes to dust you will have it on both wood and acrylic. I personally find acrylic to have less dust during the turning stage - I get the longer ribbons (as seen in the video) but I don't want to fool you there is still dust. And sanding - yes - there is dust. I use a vacuum right by the lathe and it does not bother me. I have issues with wood and allergies over the years. I always use a mask and face shield. With the vacuum right there my dust has been significantly less, but still have some. If there is anything I can do to encourage you (and still be honest) I would like to see you get back to turning. Hopefully it comes out in the videos - my goal is simply to encourage people to have fun at the lathe. Let me know if you get back into turning.

      I plan on doing a video on this but here are the CliffsNotes (yes I made it through high school and college on CliffsNotes). The cutters fit in the same tool as the traditional tools (round for round - square for square). There is really not a different cutting technique - tool level and on center. I go slightly slower across. It is a significantly less aggressive cut so slow the cut down. Specifically on acrylics it helps reduce (I get none) - chip out or breaks. On end grain or hard woods it simply forces me to go slower. No change in tools introduction or technique. Please don't fall for the internet hype that you can simply tilt your tool down and get the same cut. The geometry is not the same and you cannot get the same muscle memory with it. I will have a video on it soon, but in the mean time hope this answers the questions. If not - please keep them coming. ExoticBlanks will be offering a free zoom call starting next month - so if you get on the call remind me and I can show you the technique. Keep in touch. Mark

    Mark, thank you for this demonstration. I am considering giving this system a try because I seem to have nothing but problems with a normal CA finish. Everything from sticking to the delrin bushings to sanding through while trying to level the finish out. One question though, I do not have a buffing station and really would like to avoid having to purchase one. What final sanding and buffing steps would you recommend in lieu of a buffing system to get a good end result?

    • @markdreyer2865
      @markdreyer2865 ปีที่แล้ว

      After you do the final sanding - use Novus 2 polish. Put it on on low speed with a blue paper towel. To remove it use cotton pads - available at the makeup counter at the local Walgreens-type store. The buffing wheel will give you more brilliance, but the cotton will work great. Cotton tee shirts or cotton cloth will also work. Hope this helps and thanks for watching. Let me know how it works out for you if you try it.
