  • There are many videos out there on casting. This is not one of them - I look at preparing a label for placing it on a tube. Cropping, changing resolution, and sizing are a few of the techniques needed and explored. Then we look at the label paper itself. This is really the first step to the perfect cast. Thanks for watching.
    In this series of videos, I plan to take individual topics and explore them and discuss them 10 minutes at a time. I will use my 25 years as a pen maker to give tips and tricks on the topic. Each topic will only be 10 minutes. We will explore everything from kit and blank selection, to drilling, to turning and turning tools, finishing, and marketing and sales. If there is a topic you would like to see discussed, please leave me a comment. Thanks

    Big fan Mark. Why 300 dpi? I use the 1200 dpi setting on my little HP photo inkjet. The difference is significant.

      Sorry for the delay - I completely agree and if your printer has the resolution - go for it. I am still using an older HP and in all honesty I have a background in print - so I just use what I know. I appreciate the comment and will look into it myself. Thanks for watching.

    Mark - love the video and trying to figure something out. I have a logo but when I copy the logo the image goes all the way to the edge. I cannot crop it but can resize it. Bit that doesn't give me any space for overlapping - I need to create a little "white space" around the edges - can you provide any direction? Thank you!

    • @markdreyer2865
      @markdreyer2865  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for the delay in reply. When you paste and image in you should be able to move it around. The easier way is to create a layer first that is the size of the image for the blank. Put a white filled box in the entire layer. Then copy and paste your content into the new layer - you will be able to move, adjust, and size the new image in the layer. Hope this helps.

    Mark, I can produce a label for a custom pen just fine, thanks to your detailed instructions. But when I wrap a brass pen barrel, the adhesive on the label doesn't adhere at the edge. That is, the two long sides of the label peel back after a little bit of time. Any tips about how to get the label to adhere properly all along the barrel?

    • @markdreyer2865
      @markdreyer2865  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First - thanks for watching. When you say peel back a little bit is that during the casting process? And I hate to ask are you using the waterproof labels? I have not had an issue with the water proof labels with the 1/16" over lap. And I do finger press them on quite tight. Without water proof labels we used to use Modge Podge (sp?) over the seem. Let me know if you are using the waterproof with the 1/16" over lap.

    • @alanholbrook337
      @alanholbrook337 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@markdreyer2865 Mark, thanks for the prompt reply. The peeling occurs before I get to the actual resin pour. I am indeed using the labels you recommended, but I might not be getting enough overlap, and it appears you want the edges to be paper on paper rather than paper on brass. I'll try increasing the width of the label to get more overlap and I'll let you know.

    • @alanholbrook337
      @alanholbrook337 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mark, adding the extra 1/16" seems to have done the trick. Thanks.

    what brand resin do you recommend? Im having trouble with cheap resin not curing hard after 1 week.

    • @markdreyer2865
      @markdreyer2865  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My guess is you are using epoxy. I never use epoxy for pan blanks - I agree 100% with you they never cure (and yes I know people will differ with me here). I use Silmar 41 for all my clear casts. If color casting - Alumilite slow. Thanks for watching....

    I know you said they were waterproof labels, but what stops the ink smudging. I have tried inkjet printing my labels but they always smudge during casting. Do you have to coat the label before casting?

    • @markdreyer2865
      @markdreyer2865  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So when you say they smudge are you using the waterproof paper? I never had an issue with smudging when using the OnLineLabels paper mentioned in the video. I do not seal anything, and I can use gloss also. Let me know if you are using the labels mentioned in the video. Thanks, Mark

    • @MrFlashback2

      @@markdreyer2865 Thanks for the reply Mark. I just can't understand how the ink will not smudge seeing as it is printed on the paper. The paper may be waterproof but what makes the ink waterproof. I have just started out in pen turning and am still confused. John

    • @markdreyer2865

    How do you obtain copyrighted material for clear pen blanks?

    • @markdreyer2865
      @markdreyer2865  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a complicated topic, but in general you need to speak with the copyright holder and get permission. I would highly advise that the permission comes in writing. The hardest part is tracking down the copyright holder.

      I have a question as I have no real experience with any of the programs you used , I downloaded adobe and followed your instructions to the tee , however when I printed the test label it was so dark and the colors are very faded , the red is not a bright red like the customer wants , how do I get the colors to stay sharp from the original scan? Thank you for the video it did help so much

    • @markdreyer2865
