  • In this video we explore the world of segmenting. This is a basic introduction - the topic is vast. Look for more about segmenting in this series.
In this series of videos, I plan to take individual topics and explore them and discuss them 10 minutes at a time. I will use my 25 years as a pen maker to give tips and tricks on the topic. Each topic will only be 10 minutes. We will explore everything from kit and blank selection, to drilling, to turning and turning tools, finishing, and marketing and sales. If there is a topic you would like to see discussed, please leave me a comment. Thanks.

Hi Mark. You mention at about 10:52 to look at Dixon's video. I don't know who that is. If I search Dixon on TH-cam I get all kinds of videos. Thanks for a great video series.

So sorry. This is my fault - as I mentioned this was part of a demo I did some time ago. The reference was to Dick Sing and his video. I will be recording a demo on drilling and facing for this channel soon. I am sorry about the reference. If there was a question - what Dick does is that he has a block of wood that has been squared to the table and his disk sander. He then 2-face tapes the segment he wants to sand to the block and uses his miter gauge to kiss the segment to the sander to get a clean edge. Does this make sense? Thanks for watching.

Could you use melamine edge banding in place of the white veneer you used with the ebony? Thanks for the video.

I’m new to Pen making and turning In general. How do you make that jig for segmenting? I’ve thought about doing what you were talking about. Didn’t know it had a name. I’ve only been doing this for a few months. Again great video and info!

I had that jig from hdpe / cutting board material. And the screws are eye-bolts from Home Depot. By next week ExoticBlanks.com will be making them (I have received a few requests to make them). If interested in that one let me know. Otherwise - cutting board material works well - I had it left over from making casting models. Let me know if there is anything else I can answer.
