  • Sanding is not the most glamorous part of pen making, but it will make the difference between a pen with the perfect glass like finish and one that is "just alright". Over the next 10 minutes I will go over all the steps you need to get that perfect prep for finish on both woods and acrylics.
    In this series of videos, I plan to take individual topics and explore them and discuss them 10 minutes at a time. I will use my 25 years as a pen maker to give tips and tricks on the topic. Each topic will only be 10 minutes. We will explore everything from kit and blank selection, to drilling, to turning and turning tools, finishing, and marketing and sales. If there is a topic you would like to see discussed please leave me a comment. Thanks.

    Sometimes, ya just gotta use sandpaper for shaping. I just turned a coconut cast in clear resin blank that was probably 15+ years old. It was chipping out BAD. So bad that I KNEW if I kept going with the tool, one or more of the chips was going to reach all the way in to the coconut. Definitely slower than using a skew/spindle gouge/carbide, but it worked.

      Sorry for the delay - but as I always say mine are just suggestions. Honestly as long as you are having fun and on the lathe I am good with that. Thanks for watching!

    Good video as usual. Do you use the MM wet? You wet the wet/dry sandpaper. I was intrigued by your cost analysis on sandpaper. There is a saying: Use sandpaper like someone else is paying for it.

      I wet MM on acrylics and dry on wood - even after I applied GluBoost. Not a big fan of water near wood. That is also the reason I split my MM into wood and acrylics. Thanks for watching ...

    Stopped by your yoube channel after a great demo provided to the San Diego Woodturners. Fantastic video. I have been a big fan of the Abranet which can be fairly expensive. Going out to pick up some sanpaper from the Big Box store and give it a shot. I also agree the the most under utilized accessory in the shop is the trash can. One plus with the Abranet is I can usually use the same piece of sand paper for 4 to 5 pens before it is past its prime. Thanks for the tips.

    Hi Mark first time to your site you do a great job in your presentation. How do you have you have your turning tool holders.

    • @markdreyer2865
      @markdreyer2865  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sam I assume you are asking about the fact all my tools are hung upside down. A lot easier and cheaper than you think - the shelf is a closet organizing open white with the 1" spacers (www.homedepot.com/p/ClosetMaid-SuperSlide-72-in-W-x-16-in-D-White-Ventilated-Wire-Shelf-4735/100146445). Then I screw a "c" hook (utility hook) on the bottom of each tool. Hanging them upside down. Easy and the hooks are cheap.

    Very good video. I have a question. When making a wood pen, when do you use sanding sealer?

    • @markdreyer2865
      @markdreyer2865  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the delay - I simply did not see the question. I am sorry. For wood pens I never use a sanding sealer. I simply turn and sand it down then use GluBoost. I have a video on that at - th-cam.com/video/WdJ0sLEQuSY/w-d-xo.html. I find that I don't need any other prep with that finish. Very easy to use and consistent. Can be done on the lathe with the lathe on or off. Please let me know if you have any other question. Promise to get back sooner. Thanks for watching.

    Can you please talk a bit about your sponsor, Penmakers International, and post a link to them? I couldn't find one with a quick search. Thanks for the informative video. For a future topic, I'd like to see you actually go through the Micromesh process and anything else you might do to finish a pen. I was left wanting more of the story with this video.

    Do you use one little piece of sandpaper for each grit for each pen then toss it? Are you using the same grit that you last used with the lathe on when you go with the grain or the next grit up?

    • @markdreyer2865
      @markdreyer2865  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry I might not have been clear. No I use the paper maybe two pens then toss. Remember when you fold it you can use the other side also. I suggest looking at the paper before use - if you cannot see the paper and only see embedded dust you know you cannot get a clean cut. Sandpaper should be considered a cutter. Try two. If the paper is still clean go another. But once you cannot see a clean open - toss it. I bet you will see a noticeably easier clearer finish.
      On the second question - no. With the micro mesh (and even traditional) I go every other. Meaning if I am using the 1200 with the lathe on then I go 2400 lathe off, then 3600 lathe on and so forth.
      Hope this answers the questions - if not let me know. And thanks for watching.
