  • Ever have a pen blank come out "out of rounds". You spent significant time drilling, gluing, turning and finishing only to have an unusable out of round blank. We will look at the two big factors - mandrels and the lathe. Hope you enjoy.
    In this series of videos, I plan to take individual topics and explore them and discuss them 10 minutes at a time. I will use my 25 years as a pen maker to give tips and tricks on the topic. Each topic will only be 10 minutes. We will explore everything from kit and blank selection, to drilling, to turning and turning tools, finishing, and marketing and sales. If there is a topic you would like to see discussed, please leave me a comment. Thanks.

    Love the nylon washer idea with the turn between center system, that has been a problem for me in the past.

    Hi, I love these videos! Thanks so much for all this great pen-making info. Two very enthusiastic thumbs-up!
    It seems crazy to use the knurl nut with the mandrel saver, because you are simply reintroducing pressure onto the mandrel which will tend to cause it to bow all over again. The mandrel saver design puts the pressure onto the bushings and directly onto the blanks, and the mandrel itself has no pressure at all along its length. It has the added advantage of allowing you to put both blanks on the lathe at the same time.

    Mark...! OMG...! You just saved my Christmas. I did 10 slimlines today with a wobbly mandrel and just thought the mandrel was toast. I live in Newfoundland, Canada where there are NO woodworking stores, so it would take 3 weeks to order a new one. I was using too many spacers, and my tailstock wasnt setting correctly. ALL FIXED...THANK U SO MUCH. Steve

    3 years of useing this live center set and love it, well almost. Have the same problem with the sticky bushings. Worst thing is I have kylon washers laying around and was to dumb to think of using them, but a set will now be put with them. Thanks, problem solved.

    The headstock on my Nova DVR XP rotates to enable turning bowls larger than 16" in diameter. When returning to doing spindles, I use your procedure to align the headstock with the tailstock. I did purchase the double ended mortise that Nova offers for aligning, but found that it was not as effective as using two point centers like you recommend. It's an easy check, and after about 8 hours or turning, I do that check again...and especially before drilling blanks on the lathe.

    Hi Mark, I am a beginner in this hobby I am getting set up got a new Nova lathe and have been slowly gathering all the stuff I think I need to make a pen. I still haven’t made one yet. I have been watching a ton of TH-cam videos and yours are the best I have ran across. Thank You for making this sound a little easier than I thought it was going to be. One question I have is you said to turn as fast as your lathe goes my lathes goes 4050 rpm and that seems a little scary to me.
    Thanks again for such great videos I am a subscriber now and have gave thumbs up 👍🏼 on everyone of your videos that I have watched. Thanks again Don

      First and foremost never ever do anything that is scary to you. Always be safe. My point is - you will find a cleaner cut when the wood gives less resistance - which will be faster. Start out at 2000 and slowly move up after a few pens. You will find your control point. If you check out my other videos on cutting acrylic and wood I only take amount I am comfortable with. My PowerMatic 3250B tops out around 3200 rpm, which is what I turn at. Remember safety is most important. I always use a safety shield over my glasses. I thing I will do a video on shop safety and just starting out. Keep us aware of your progress - always nice to share. I look forward to it.

    On kits with upper and lower blanks, the center bushing is one piece. If you use the center bushing on one end of the turn between centers mandrel and the mandrel rod is not long enough to protrude into the blank tube is that a problem?

  • @jonnutting2292
    @jonnutting2292 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I guess I missed it, what is the dead and live center kit you're using? I definitely want to get my hands on this as I turned about 35 pens for Christmas and had to fix a handful of out of round blanks.

    OK, Mark, you need to get out of my head! I have been working the same issue/s on and off for awhile and dove back into it about two weeks ago. I love your simple, but elegant nylon washer solution to the bushings getting “peened or rolled” into the shaft groove, BRILLANT! I was drilling a chamfer into my bushings to solve this problem. In my opinion PSI should have used multiple bearings in the live center to stabilize the axial play/movement. I get vibration and chatter from the tail stock side sometimes, usually on very hard material, I believe it is from the play in the live center. I found the NOVA 2MT LIVE CENTER SYSTEM (SKU 5015 AND 71074) from Teknatools is a three-bearing live center that has a 2MT on its nose and will accommodate different centers. One of the centers is their Miniature Extension Center, and as they state, “the diameter of this stem is 1/4″ so can double as a 1/4″ pen mandrel”. It is actually .250", which of course is too large, so I had to reduce the diameter to about .245” to fit most my bushings. I used a Mill file while it was on the lathe at about 300 rpm and slowly filed the diameter down checking with calipers along the way to insure I kept it straight and parallel. I now have a rock-solid TBC live center that I could not be happier with. Rockler $91.99+ Shipping, Home Depot $75.18 Free Shipping SKU204488267. Rockler will price match Home Depot. Great video, keep'em coming!

      Nanoqx, I had the exact same issue with the tailstock live center and I also had the Nova live center system which ran perfectly.

    • @toolchuck
      @toolchuck 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Alan Miller Alan, just so I understand, did the Nova live center solve or correct the chatter on yours as well? I have also been turning with carbide tools, which of course scrapes instead of cuts the material which I think might be the cause of the chatter. I am in the process of learning to use HSS tools such as gouges and skews to see if this will eliminate the chatter when turning on mandrels as well as giving me a cleaner overall cut.

    • @alanmiller1250
      @alanmiller1250 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@toolchuck What I found was the pen live center would wobble when turning making me think that the bearing was not true. I then tried the Nova which ran dead smooth.
      So I assume something was wrong with the first center. I also used carbide tools and didn't get chatter with either center, I was worried about out of round.
      The carbide can be aggressive in the cut, sharp is best. I adjust the height and speed and with a fresh cutter I got a smooth cut. Hope this helps.

    I used the knurl nut and the manfred saver together. I won't anymore. The nut plate on the inside of the saver backed out, froze the lathe, and bent the mandrel. Definitely not saved.

    Mark, Thanks for the tip on the washers. Picked a couple up at Home Depot today. Location is hardware isle, Gray metal drawers, Package says "EVEERBILT" on top, Listed as spacers, 0.257 inch ID, x 1/2" inch OD, x 1/4" long. May need to reem just a tiny bit to fit on my "Stub centers". Item shows 595 447 up top, don't know if it is a P/N or not. Below the barcode it says 8 87480 14998 2. Including sales tax $.87, can't beat that. Thank you so much.

    I turn between centers with NO BUSHINGS at all. I simply measure for fit. Bushing easily get smaller and kits are not very accurate on their dimensions.
