  • In this video we look at a topic never talked about at demos - gluing. We all think it is simple - put glue on tube / push tube in blank. Gluing can cause numerous issues that some will say are caused by other issues. Gluing is critical. We will explore epoxy vs. CA. How heat is our enemy. And the issues bad gluing can cause. Thanks for watching.
    In this series of videos, I plan to take individual topics and explore them and discuss them 10 minutes at a time. I will use my 25 years as a pen maker to give tips and tricks on the topic. Each topic will only be 10 minutes. We will explore everything from kit and blank selection, to drilling, to turning and turning tools, finishing, and marketing and sales. If there is a topic you would like to see discussed, please leave me a comment.
    Thanks

    Mark, I love your videos and have applied many of your techniques into my normal pen building routine. But I bet I do one thing better than anyone else out there, and that is gluing the blank to my fingers, the table and anything else that happens to be within arm’s reach!

    I have been using CA glue exclusively, and I just thought maybe I should try 2 part epoxy. Then your video popped up. I am now ready to give it a go. Thank you. From Brisbane Australia.

    Getting ready to glue a two part blank. I watched your video to make sure I didn't miss anything. Recently a fellow in International Association of Penturners had a solution to blown out blanks. He turned down the end of the blank and "segmented" a piece of wood to complete the blank on the tube. Looked good and a way to use the cutoff ends.

    Thank you for this. I am just getting my shop set up after moving 2-1/2 years ago and purchased a grab bag of acrylic blanks at the Tennessee Woodturner's Association's Symposium this past weekend. I spent several hours drilling and gluing about 20 sets of blanks. After letting them set a little more than 24 hours, I took them to my drill press to dress the ends and the first three sets lost their insert. After watching this, I am sure that the heat was the culprit (I was removing, 1/4"-1/2" of excess from each blank.) I' go back and try it again. Keep it up and thanks again!!

      Victor - First thanks for watching. I can generally tell when the mill is hot. And yes I experienced this myself (so you are not alone - we all do it). Let us know if when you re-tried with a cold (not hot) mill - did it work? Mark

    Mark-another very good video. I find CA glue works much better w wood then acrylic. I haven’t used 5 minute epoxy but rather a more traditional glue epoxy that takes a few hours. I will try 5 minute epoxy. And yes I have experienced all the issues w CA that you discussed.

    I glued a set of acrylic blanks today and waiting until tomorrow PM to turn. My experience and your take on CA glue is very good together. I'm using Devcon 5 Minute Epoxy Gel right now. Noted the bottle in your video. Circle on top of circle to measure? Why didn't I think of that? Thanks for the video and will be looking at more.

    Mark, as usual, great video. If you are going to leave the epoxy to cure for 24hrs (a highly recommended practice) why not use 15 minute epoxy rather than 5 minute? You get extra work time, and you are still going to let it cure for 24hrs.

    • @markdreyer2865
      @markdreyer2865  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is a great question and I wish I had a better answer than I get my epoxy from Home Depot and I really like the Loctite. Home Depot only carries the 5 minute. Fifteen minute would work and more open time. You would be amazed how many you can get done in 5 minutes if you pretest all tubes and have everything lined up. I usually do two sets of five minutes (I get bored after that). Thanks for watching.

      I've been using Mercury 15 minute epoxy for several years. This gives me enough time to do four pens at one time even if they are two-part pens. I find the best part of the Mercury adhesive is that it is alcohol clean up. Much easier than using other solvents.

    I have a problem with bubbles in clear, colored acrylic blanks. I use medium CA, and saturate the blank so it drips out the end, and then saturate the brass tube. Most of the time, I see bubbles somewhere in the blank, after the CA cures. I will try your epoxy tip, and hopefully that will eliminate the bubbles.

    • @markdreyer2865
      @markdreyer2865  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Doug Robins - Please let me know what you see if you try the epoxy. Bubbles on the inside with CA is exactly what I was mentioning when I talked dry spots. Because you cannot rotate the tube during insertion with CA like you can with epoxy you will get bubbles. They are surface air that gets trapped during the push in. Please let me know. Thanks for watching - I appreciate it.

    I no longer use super glue. I have had all manner of faults. The worst was the CA shattering after being dropped. Had the glue flash harden on insertion (wish I knew your technique of just cutting off and sliding in the other end, I wasted that whole blank as I wanted to keep the grain match). I now use gorilla non foaming glue, similar technique for insertion. My dislike of two part epoxy is getting the quality right or wasting it when I only make a couple of pens at the same time. Each to their own though.
    Thanks for the insight.

    Excellent info.
    What do you think of Gorilla glue (or any other polyurethane adhesive)?
    I'm still at the 'plug the end of the tube' phase. I like dental wax for the end of the tube I'm inserting. It's cheap and works.
    For the other end of the tube, I use a silicon plug. Jam the plug into the hole, do the glue up. After the glue dries, pull off the silicon plug (nothing except silicon sticks to silicon) and knock out the wax. Clean as a whistle.

    • @markdreyer2865
      @markdreyer2865  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As mentioned in the video - I really like the plug the end idea. It is important to keep the ends clean and your ways seems easy and clean. Nice job and thanks for sharing. The way I demoed it I keep the glue out, but use your plugs. I want to make sure the glue is consistent across the tubes.
      As for Gorilla glue I have played with it for deer antler. As for other blanks no I have not because I like epoxy. Let me know if you use it and what your results are. I like the idea of sharing the information exchange on these videos.
      I look forward to hearing back. Thanks for watching - I sincerely appreciate it.

      Sorry for the delay. I use the round file to get any debris out of the blank. With the paint - I never really gave an issue with extra paint (see my paint the blank video). I use QTips to get the paint in the blank and generally never have an issue with build up. Hope this helps, if not please let me know if I am missing the question. Thanks for watching.

    Okay, I need to watch all of your videos before I make another pen. I need to plug my ends from now on! I recently purchased Mercury Flex 15 minute epoxy. My experience was a disaster and I was thinking it was the glue’s fault. I made several mistakes that may have added to the failure of the glue. Can you give me any tips on working with epoxy in a hot and humid climate (no, I cannot move nor can I add AC to my shop right now. Maybe down the road LOL). I try to get equal parts resin and hardener. I will try mixing a little longer next time, but my issue was that the Mercury Flex epoxy never set up completely. Two days later, the glue that was left on the wax paper was still tacky. My theory is the 90 + degree temps and the 80% humidity. What do you think and any tricks to deal with that? Thanks!

    • @markdreyer2865
      @markdreyer2865  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry for the delay. If the epoxy is not setting on the wax paper we both know there is an issue. The most common issues are not mixing thoroughly, not an even mix of resin and hardener, or last simply bad or out of date product. I do not know much about mercury flex but it does have a good reputation as a CA. My concern is the hot weather and still not curing. For me when the weather is hot my epoxy will cure faster than when "normal". I generally have to mix less because I know I am going to go through it faster.
      My guess in order -
      If you are only mixing a small amount you need to get a closer ratio of resin to hardener. Just to test I would suggest as in the video to pour a circle of the resin and then the hardener directly over the resin.
      Mixing completely
      Try a different batch of mercury or try the stuff I use in the video (from Home Depot)
      Having researched it on Google we should be able to figure it out.
      Hope this helps and let us know if you try something different and it works.

      @seethroughmeb.8070 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Mark for your thoughts. I did make some changes based on your suggestions. First (but unrelated), I bought play dough and blocked the ends to decrease the amount of epoxy that was getting into my tube. I also bought a larger round file to clean out the tubes and love how easy it is. Next and epoxy related, I did the circle on top of circle for the amounts. When I felt like I had mixed it enough, I mixed it a little longer! I cannot find a date on the epoxy so I do not know how old it is. It was only the second time I had used it. It seemed to set up well the next time I started a pen, so maybe the amount and mixing time were my issues. I will keep watching for it to set up on the wax paper and if I have even one more time of it not setting up I will try the Loctite for sure. Thank you so much for taking your time to help me. I truly appreciate you!

      Sorry for the very brief delay .... I have used Gorilla glue on deer antler and it worked fine. I haven't used it on others because the 5 minute epoxy works for me (and I am a creature of habit) , and I find the Gorilla glue is kind of messy and harder to clean if I get some in the tube (and yes I occasionally do). Let me know how it works for you, should work great and is only one part so it would be easier. Thanks for watching....

    I'm no expert, but I strongly prefer epoxy. Yeah, it's slower and messier than CA. Epoxy just makes more sense (to me) - mechanically speaking.
