  • Assembly is general the last step in the pen making process. It is also a step that can differentiate yourself from the common pen turner. In this video we will look at the assembly of four of the more common pen kits and all the issues we might see. Once we apply the techniques in this video for all kits your pens will look spectacular. Thanks for watching.
Found it - the transmission setting bolt was from Bob Swartzendruber on IAP (PenTurners.org)
In this series of videos, I plan to take individual topics and explore them and discuss them 10 minutes at a time. I will use my 25 years as a pen maker to give tips and tricks on the topic. Each topic will only be 10 minutes. We will explore everything from kit and blank selection, to drilling, to turning and turning tools, finishing, and marketing and sales. If there is a topic you would like to see discussed, please leave me a comment. Thanks.

I keep telling myself: "Just one more video because Mark's surely going to address a topic that I'm less interested in." On my sixth video, I realized that I'm interested in pretty much everything Mark has to say about pen making. Kudos to you, Mark. You've managed to hit all the topidcs that have interested, and annoyed me in the last few years since I took up pen making. All those times I thought I hadn't received all the parts, and all the times I've spent searching my dirty shop floor for a dropped part. Glad to hear I'm not the only one getting frustrated. I now need to get out in t he shop and make some pens, so I'm going to have to tear myself away, and schedule this next video for later. Thank you for these tricks and tips, Mark.

Marc - thanks for watch (and sorry I am keeping you out of the shop - just having some fun). When I thought about doing this series I wanted to cover the things we don't get in normal demos and lives (there are some great pen turning videos out there). I wanted to cover the things that at least I think - differentiate ourselves the details. And yes I also wanted to cover some of the things where I always got frustrated. I sincerely appreciate you watching. As always this is just my way - if you have suggestions for videos or better ways to do things - let me know. I recently created a new Facebook page - to just talk - "10 Minutes To Better Pen Making". Once again - thanks. Hopefully you are checking out the new series on some advanced techniques (casting and differentiated pens).

Thanks for watching and that is a great suggestion. I will put that one in the queue. New set starts tomorrow with a casting video, in two week turning an aluminum pen, then some segmenting.

Mark - Great video - I have probably make a couple hundred pens but have never seen some of these tips. The bolt idea is sooo simple. I had made a collar our of starboard for setting the transmission but the bolt is much better. Thanks for some great tips!!

Great video! For the last couple of years I have basically only been using John’s feather blanks. They are beautiful when complete.

I am 8 months new to pen turning and I still have a lot to learn. I like learning from you better than learning from making mistakes! LOL I was going to buy a chamfering tool today because I am having trouble with assembly. I am glad I saw your video first. I had not thought about the chamfering tool actually removing part of the thickness of the brass. I do have a round file, but it is a lot smaller than yours. I think I will get a larger one first and see if that helps me clean out the tubes better than I have been. I also love your idea about assembling the pens in a different order than the instructions tell us to. I can now see the reasons why I have had to buy spare parts after pressing on an end that truly should not have been pressed on. Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge to help others learn about this craft. Keep up with the great videos! I am truly appreciative of them and you!

Mark, Your videos are great and have watched them all multiple times. Thanks for sharing your experience with new turners like me. I like your idea about keeping organized with the boxes. Can I ask where you got them?
    Thanks again.

    Lots of great information!.
I found another way to avoid using a reamer on the ends of the brass tube. It's call a Acrux7 Metal Deburring Tool Kit (on Amazon). To use it, you insert the tip of the tool, then run it around the opening. It does shae a little brass and gives a chamfer, but it's minor.

Have a question about Slimline Pro ECD Click pen assembly. On a normal Slimline, you check that the transmission is properly seated for length with a makeshift spacer tool. Love the idea. I like my nib to stick out a bit farther than most. How can I check the depth on the EDC Click and adjust as desired? TIA.

Hi Mark, I’m a relatively new turner and wanted to let you know that the method you use to present your videos is very effective especially for the visual learner. Also do you have a video where you show the process on inserting the brass tubes. I seem to have a mess of a time with that. Nice job!

Thanks for the kind words and yes I have one on tubes. Here it is: th-cam.com/video/OgsRAJU8w3s/w-d-xo.html - just look at my channel and there is a video on gluing. That is the one you are looking for. Thanks.

Excellent video Mark. I appreciate you sharing your tips and tricks. While I have the Milescraft Pen Press, I have recently begun using my lathe for assembly using MT2 arbors with soft ends than can be machined to hold a nib or finial. They can even be slightly hollowed to take the threads of couplers. I got mine from Little Machine Shop littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=2394&category= but they are available from a number of other sites as well. Now I don't have to worry about overpressing on the pen press or having to do any maintenance on it either. The lathe allows me to completely control the pressure I put on the components as I press them together. Once again, great video and wonderful tips.

I’d like a video on something so basic as how to use that crimper. I saw you making adjustments to it but it wasn’t clear what adjustment you weee making. I know this is basic. I’m sorry .
