    Personally I don't like the level layouts, if the levels were better laid out I'd probably like CD a lot more. Also. Nitpick : You said the Sega CD released late into the Genesis' life but I would argue it released midway through it's life. The Genesis was still getting games in 1995, 1996 I think even. The CD add on released in 1991 in JP but 1992 in America.

    My main gripe about its design is how the gameplay loop treats the Bad Future as an obstacle to only be interacted with when making a mistake, despite those variants often being the most interesting ones gameplay-wise (in addition to their soundtrack variants). As I got better with the game and learned its levels, I found I wasn't entering them much at all... which seemed like a shame. I almost feel like Bad Future should've been the initial state of each stage just to ensure the player can explore & experience each variant (although I get how needing to find two signposts to eliminate a generator could get tedious).

    Spring Yard Zone was really fun, but having to play through Marble Zone just to get to it kept me from wanting to play the game often. Thank goodness for the level select code!

    I find the soundtrack to be THE MOST FORGETTABLE EVER. I beat the game in 2 hours and I could NOT recall a SINGLE track despite just playing it. the stages are so short that I can't even pay attention to any of the tracks.

    My no deaths run of Sonic 2 is one of my greatest gaming accomplishments because of that last damn level. Even though I’ve gotten pretty consistent with not dying there, it still causes me to die sometimes unlike most other levels. So even though I literally have TG recognized world records in multiple Game & Watch games, a no deaths run of Sonic 2 is definitely my greatest gaming accomplishment, along with a no deaths run of the original Super Mario Bros no warps.

    Sonic 2 & Sonic 3 (& Knuckles) were better games than Sonic 1 but Sonic 1 was not a bad game. Sonic 1 using parallax gave a feeling of speed that was lacking from Mario games and the movement in Sonic games was far more fluid than the tighter controls of Mario. Ultimately sonic had a lot more spectacle to it, sections of the game where the levels essentially went auto, you were still in control but you didn't need to directly control anything and that allowed the action to flow in a more directed fashion. Comparing Labyrinth Zone in Sonic 1 to Hydrocity in Sonic 3, the latter has A LOT more spectacle which allowed that particular water level to actually be fun, it also had over-lapping pipes and other tricks going on giving the impression of much more complicated level design than really was happening. But I do think the main thing Sonic games had over Mario is the directions, Mario levels on the most part are just left to right, All sonic levels also end on the right but often have sections where you go up, down, left or right.

    Huh. Been playing this game since 92. Never could beat it as a kid. I dusted off the genesis later in life as a "grown up" so my kids could try it. First game i put in was sonic 2 and a few days later i managed to conquer it. I never knew about supersonic. I used to always play the special stages but guess i never got all the emeralds. Ill have to revesit this game again sometime in the future. Sega genesis was an amazing part of my childhood, soooo many fun games.

    So to anyone still curious about the 3DS port, I'll give y'all a somewhat basic rundown of the differences. • No focus on rescuing the critters Eggman supposedly kidnapped making speedruns and playing through the game in general much easier... for the most part. • Drastically different level design. Some are good, others bad. • Different boss fights. Instead of Acts 2 and 4 having boss fights at the end, Lost World 3DS follows the formula from other Sonic games consisting of three acts then a boss act. • Music differences. While Lost World 3DS does share music with its Wii U/PC counterpart, some tracks either aren't used or are played in different acts. • Red Star Ring Rewards. In the Wii U/PC version Red Star Rings unlock the Chaos Emeralds just like in Sonic Colors, 3DS unlocks extra acts which heavily feature a specific Wisp, often using a pre-existing act with a modified level layout. Also, Red Star Rings are not present in Boss Fights in the 3DS version nor the Tutorial stage, meaning Lava Mountain doesn't have any Red Star Rings to collect and meaning there's a 20 Red Star Ring difference between both versions. • Bonus Content. Wii U had circus minigames and DLC levels which could reward players with more critters or extra lives. 3DS had actual Special Stages (which will unlock Super Sonic when all 7 are completed) and a Hard Mode which removes nearly all the Rings and Capsules with 1-UPs and replaces Red Star Rings with 5-Rings. • Miscellaneous Differences. Wii U/PC features the Cyan, Indigo, Magenta, Yellow, Orange, Black, Crimson and Green Wisps while the 3DS version features the Cyan, Indigo, Yellow, Gray, Red and Ivory Wisps. The Gray Wisp *is* in the Wii U version, but is exclusive to the multiple mode. RC Vehicles and stored items are present in both versions, but the 3DS version not only has a bigger limit, but also allows you to create and transfer RC Vehicles to the Wii U version from the 3DS version. You can also create items in the 3DS version, but none can be transferred to the Wii U version and the items that can be created are different from what the Wii U/PC version has. How you make RC Vehicles and Items is by collecting Materials from beating levels and heading to Tails' Laboratory. Depending on the zone and the rank you get at the end depends on how many Materials you'll receive excluding the Special Stages which will give a specific Material depending on the act. Tails' Lab can also be upgraded which is how you unlock more craftable items and RC Vehicles. Tails' Laboratory also allows you to listen to the in-game music and view the cutscenes whenever you want. The 3DS version's multiplayer is a bit more robust compared to Wii U. You have Race, Battle and Special Stage with up to four players either Local, Online (R.I.P.) or Download Play. Download Play limits players to Windy Hill and Special Stage 1 while the other options are limited to how much of the game you've completed. Also, VS. Mode allows for more Materials to be collected in Races if you reach the goal before the last player finishes. It's not a whole lot, but it's a nice bonus for the really fast and skilled players. • Boss Differences. While the Wii U/PC version has different fights for each of the Zeti. The 3DS version has only one fight per Zeti not including the Boss Rushes. Zazz and Zomnom take place on a spherical planet, Zeena and Zor fight on a flat plane and Master Zik and Zavok have 2D fights. Timing is key for all fights, but the Wisps are also important. Some fights make them mandatory others make them optional. And before anyone asks, yes the fights are repeated beat-for-beat in Lava Mountain just with a different environment. The fight against Eggman is a bigger Nega-Wisp Armor reskin in the 3DS version compared to the Wii U/PC version. Straight down to the attacks being combined once the bosses health is low enough and having to mash the Homing Attack button. One last thing to mention is that Sonic's alternate Homing Attack is a shockwave kick (referred to as a "Somersault" in-game) that stuns most enemies. Some foes will need to be hit with it before you can actually attack them. Also both versions feature the Bounce move but the Wii U/PC version has a hard-limit with three bounces. 3DS is indefinite but allows for a similar benefit to the Wii U/PC version. TL:DR for all the lazy readers. The 3DS version is a mixed bag in terms of overall quality, but also has many features the Wii U/PC version lacks. Also I probably forgot to mention a few things.

    For me that the final boss is 24 hits with 0 rings holds it back a lot, especially if you’re playing a version where you can get punted right back to the start of the game including losing chaos emeralds if you die too many times.

    Sonic 2 was a favorite of mine as a kid, and I've played it countless hours. Here's my take on the special stages. Because you access special stages at a checkpoint, you have multiple attempts to find a checkpoint while having 50 rings, which may have added some constraints but also forced more creative routing. You can also get Super Sonic by the third stage. Older games heavily emphasized memorizing stages, so after a few hours of playing it is very easy to grab the 50 rings before a particular checkpoint, meaning you can go fast AND get to the special stages. As for the stages themselves, I never disliked them. Some of the "surprise" moments, like going over a "hill" were fun and tested your reaction speed, and also again rewarded memorization. Overall, I think the video was great but the take on the special stages was under analyzed and catered to one opinion instead of taking a critical approach and finding both the upsides and downsides. Either way, I'll continue to watch the videos!

    While I have a soft spot for the Sonic game canon, the thing that first drew me to Sonic and which motivated me to save up my allowance to buy a Sega Genesis was Sonic himself. The character charmed my socks off and at that time, the only way to partake in Sonic's world was via his video games. Had he been primarily a comic book character or a cartoon character or a toy, I'd consume that instead. I haven't played any Sonic games past the Genesis era but I'm still sucked in by Sonic, his friends and rivals, and the world they inhabit. That, to me, is Sonic's enduring appeal.

    I disagree with the idea that the game was obscure prior to the Whitehead port; it was popular among fans long before then. Sonic Gems Collection sold over 1 million copies and became part of the Gamecube's Player's Choice collection. And a PC port from 1996 that wasn't mentioned was how I first discovered the game. Great video though. Sonic CD is overall greater than the sum of its parts.

    you have exactly the same view on this game as i first did as a kid - don't take this the wrong way, i'm not saying it's a childish point of view, rather that i'm glad that someone agrees with me !! i always preferred the night stages (or the one singular that i played before deciding i'd beaten the "final boss", that being the big gaia monster at the end of the stage, and shutting the game off until further notice) because they were slower, and i found sonic's speed to be entirely unruly and difficult to control. i hadn't played any other sonic games aside from advance 3 when i was very small, hell, i hadn't played many games at all as a kid, so i don't think that helped my stance on it, but i did find that regular sonic went way too fast and i'd freak out and miss qtes, fall off the stage, and just suck in general with no real idea on how to predict what was coming, because i didn't want to go back to those stages again, knowing i'd die a million times

    Sonic game design is based on replay and memorization. So complaining that special stages also requires same strats dont make sense, also. Complaining about (you need to grind the first two levels to gain them all) ... you dont, you can just gain them normally. And when i was a kid, and sonic 3 was about to come out, i already knew the all emaralds code in the options.

    underrated masterpiece? no. enjoyable IF you know what you're doing and can exploit some if not all of the glitches? absolutely. i love the game, but i will never deny that it was a failure both critically and developmentally.

    i think it would be cool if the super peel out was like twice as fast as the spin dash, and you couldn’t just roll after it, so it’s a huge risk for some really high speed
