I haven't seen that many people call 06 a "secret masterpiece", mostly people beginning to appreciate the good ideas it had. There definitely are people who think it's a perfect game and everyone was wrong for criticizing it, but I just haven't noticed too many of them. I'm one of the people who can enjoy 06 for the great ideas it has as well as acknowledge that it's not a good game fundamentally. I think the level design is the best of the Adventure-Style games, it has elements of SA1's open ended exploration as well as SA2's linear action focus. The problem is that all the characters handle terribly so it's difficult to fully enjoy the levels. I disagree with the point of needing to make a new game for 06 to be good, P06, in my opinion, proves that 06 had great level design and character moveset concepts. Simply fixing the way the characters handle makes the game much more enjoyable. I really like the darker tone of the story, music, and the realistic environments, they remind me of Sonic 1, I've always liked the darker atmosphere of that game, but Sonic 2's upbeat action anime approach is equally great. The music is fantastic in my opinion, it feels like something out of an early 2000s Hollywood blockbuster, which would make sense because that's pretty much what 06 as a whole is going for stylistically. Also the Shadow game is mainline, things happen in it that relate to or effect other mainline games. Get over it. In all seriousness though, great job on this review, regardless of how much I disagreed, it was a very well put together video and I'm looking forward to what's next!
Really if anything with P-06, one of its biggest flaw of it right now is ironically a redeeming quality of the vanilla game: In which you don't spend much time being able to play the amigos. ChaosX has successfully made people actually want to play Amy in more sections of the game, which is a scary thought in of itself.
I know it can be more taxing/time consuming to create 30 minute videos, but holy crap was it just what I needed. As always, fantastic points, perfect editing with the funny parts here and there (especially 19:57) and spot-on discussion points. Plus new Spontman video is always welcome on my homepage
28:36 Despite what the Internet says Sonic 2006 is still one of my favorite Sonic games! It's definitely Sonic's weirdest adventure ever and that's why I love it!
I loved p-06. but that doesn't mean the original retail release was good, its still a buggy mess that should be just tossed in the garbage. p-06 is another man's vision and im willing to bet half the stuff you can do there would have been impossible in the original game. Heck we don't and probably will never get a sonic adventure 3 because of this. we're lucky enough to get tails, knuckles and amy at all these days because sega and/or sonic team caved into the "sonic's stupid friends are the problem" complaint. in terms of story presentation its a much different vibe not only in tone but length/pacing as well. SA2 and heroes cutscenes were short, simple, to the point and almost arcade like in a way. with 06 story i can see what they were going with, i have read insights from fans and it all does sound alright on paper but in execution it leaves a lot to be desired.
I loved Sonic 06 as a kid; I loved almost anything with Sonic's face on it, so I naturally enjoyed my time. I haven't played it since, and I prefer to keep it that way for as long as possible so that my nostalgia won't have to die a pitiful death. I will hold my hands up and admit I sometimes enjoy a bad game; I still play "South Park Rally" on PlayStation often, despite its many fundamental problems, and some are fun to study like "Bubsy 3D". That said, as time goes on, I lose motivation to engage with the bad considering how short life is and how much better it can be by consistently engaging in the good. Good video.
I've never played Sonic 06 even though I grew up with this franchise, maybe one day I'll experience this game myself even though it has many bugs that won't stop me from playing it. Great video as usual and keep up the good work. Oh yes and happy birthday Sonic!
If I were to remake 06... - Implement gameplay fixes from P-06 - More difficulty mode, with Easy difficulty ditching life system and has fewer hits to defeat the boss (borrowed from Colors Ultimate) - Playable Super Hedgehogs for act trial mode, unlockable after completing the game in Normal or harder difficulty - Remake the graphics, in style of Frontiers using Hedgehog Engine 2 - Some rewrite to fill plot holes and pacing, including Blaze's backstory and her relation to 06's lore, keeping most of the original plot elements intact - (Optionally) slap the title Adventure 3 and call it a day
@@traviscunningham7062 I've played it twice (on GC and Switch), years after 06, 100% both times and I found it to be pretty fun after Galaxy was too easy for me.
I do agree with awsomex because have you played Sonic boom wii u ? that sucks more then 06 and if you think 06 is the worst game then you didn't played boom. And boom we'll never get a remake fan game like 06. If you hate 06 then play Project 06 or Sonic Unleashed or Sonic Frontiers.
Something that makes me despise corporate Sega is how this wasn't the FIRST NOR LAST TIME THIS HAPPENED. Just look at Sonic Xtreme, a game with such a horrible development cicle it was abandoned and it potentially killed Sega's hardware business, and fast forward two decades and you have Sonic Boom 1, a game so tragic you feel bad for the studio that made it (Big Red Button), originally a PS4/XB1/PC game that was forcefully backscaled to Wii U because of Sega's contract with Nintendo at the time. Sega doesn't seem to learn their lesson when it comes to underfunding and rushing their games and it frustrates me.
To be honest, Sonic did recovered from the disaster that was sonic 06 with unleashed, colors and generations! But later they made a even worse disaster with sonic boom and SOMEHOW after that they made Forces which i would argue is even worse since unlike the 2000s, we waited almost like an eternity to get another mainline game.
while mania was a smashing success at the end of the day, the same year we also got forces later down the line which seemed to be a bigger game that fans were also looking forward to just to get disappointed when it released.
I'd honestly agree. You could tell Shadow, Secret Rings and 06 had ambition and a dream that meant you could at the very least, appreciate the characters and story. Lost World, Rise Of Lyric and Forces played it so astronomically safe they were boring at times. That's not even getting into what is possibly the worst writing in the franchise
I suffered with the original 06 aswell, but on the PS3 versions one of the reasons I liked it was because I saw its potential, which got wasted on the deadlines and development being so crappy P06 made that potential shine like a diamond
Not gonna say Sonic 06 is the best sonic game (ignore previous statements in which i said exactly that), but it is by far my favorite. It did so many things right, introduced a new fan-favorite character, added what is, to this day, the most bone-chilling sonic villain, and made the best side-power systems (chaos boost/gems) of any game, but they had to do something to ruin it, as sega does. Instead of focusing on their series' 15th anniversary, they went and split the team for a Wii game. I replay 06 about once or twice a year, and I play project 06 a lot, and if 06 had the love ChaosX put into P-06, and the budget of retail 06 (plus nowadays graphics, I can'tgo back), it would have been, as many say it already is, a masterpiece. Great story, great new hero, great villain, TERRIBLE execution. Still my favorite though, and nothings changing that.
I will die on the hill that 06's story was originally meant for Blaze instead of Elise. They share certain things in common and I struggle to dismiss it as coincidence. The association with fire, both being royal princesses, their kingdoms even have the word Sol in it. Not to mention both of them also had Iblis sealed within themselves. I theorized on a separate video of another Ytuber that the game was originally meant to take place in the Sol dimension. Iblis was going to be Blaze's Perfect Chaos, which is why they look alike. Silver was meant to come from Blaze's future and she was going to have a vision of Silver to foreshadow his role in the story, which is why Elise had that weird premonition during the Festival that was never explained. The gem on Blaze's forehead that was never explained in Rush's lore was meant to be a seal to contain Iblis's power. This is a reach but the Sceptre of Darkness might have even been a substitute for the Jeweled Sceptre being what sealed Solaris away. It's thoughts like this that make me think 06 should get an official remake. Its story elements has too much massive potential to just let it fade into obscurity.
Looking at it now, yeah, there's just no way it wasn't originally intended to be for Blaze. That's probably why Blaze is just sort of there for a lot of the game. No fucking clue why they made Elise, LOL. I mean, I don't actually hate her or anything, but she really isn't a necessary character, and the way they use her holds Sonic back a lot.
@@carnage0685 I feel like they just didn't know in what direction to go with Sonic's story, because they had a clear route with what they did with Shadow and Silver's. Being pressed for time didn't help. I think Sonic and Elise's dynamic fell apart because the two just don't have any chemistry, not just romantically but their friendship feels hollow. I remember years ago reading a fanfiction of an 06 rewrite where Elise acted more tsundere, and she didn't get along with Sonic at first because she started off seeing him as irresponsible and reckless. But overtime she started to warm up to him, open up with him about her struggles with the pressures of being a noble and the trauma at having a parents die so young and it was evident that her adventures with Sonic had her feeling more free from her burdens. It kept Elise human but also kept them as friends. Man I wish I remember what it was called, there was more thought put into it's plot and character development than the entirety of Sonic's story in 06.
The same with dubs. If you’re complaining about dubs being bad because of one company that’s gone for 12 years, then you’re even more stuck in the past than the company.
At the end of the game they erase what happened though. Yes they did but, it still happened. By that logic Ocarina of Time isn’t canon because Zelda sends Link back in Time at the end.
13:45 yes. There was alot of depth to the combat in heroes and alot of moces you could perform under certain circumstances. Including the dummy ring bomb when the fly characters, specifically tails and rouge, where out of allies to shoot, either because of a swirch or they got captured.
I wish Sonic Team would just bring back the Adventure Formula and integrate it into the Open Zone Formula they have while improving upon it and addressing many of the criticisms that came with the Open Zone Formula. A Sonic 06 Remake would be AMAZING if they did that along with fixing the story.
I got S-06 at launch. It was the first game I bought with my own money as a birthday gift to myself. I was frustrated with the game, raged at it, and when I finally beat it I didn't touch it again for years. I wish I was one of the lucky ones that didn't have any glitches in their playthrough, but sadly I had so many. The good ideas and beautiful scenery were ruined by countless terrible glitches, bad collision detection, drawn out sequences, the mach-speed sections, and even though I like the concept of Shadow driving vehicles from GUN, it fell flat on its face. Even so, the only character that was remotely playable was Shadow (and that's not my bias talking). I had the least amount of problems with his campaign as compared to Sonic or Silver. Sure, there were collision issues and his combat (even though I loved it) definitely needed polish. I enjoyed him being more combat oriented but the move set could've been improved. The most frustrating part of his campaign was the Kingdom Valley watercraft section. Sonic's gameplay was riddled with issues from getting stuck on everything, falling through the level, the bad air controls when jumping, stunted homing attacks, bad enemy placement, constant restarts and the punishment of essential move sets not working that I actually stopped playing as him as soon as I unlocked Shadow because I was frustrated so severely by his lack of polish. Silver was the most lackluster out of the three even though he was the newest addition. His concept was fantastic but it was executed so poorly it made it difficult to play in some parts and down-right near impossible in others. There was also the inconsistency in his power usage. The highlight of Silver's campaign was any time I got to play as Blaze. It's like there was more love given to her character than the main two hedgehogs that played very similar to her. Sadly I don't have a computer strong enough to play Project 06 right now but I'd love to just to see what could've been if SEGA would've taken the time to polish their game. But right now, '06 still leaves that sour taste in my mouth.
I'm glad sonics back. Its been a long time. The movies are awesome and are the reason we are getting such great content now. I can't wait till sonic 3 with shadows story from SA2 being told in a movie it's gonna be dark and it's gonna be great I hope they don't cut out any of the story really as its probably one of the best in the entire series.
@@davidgeorge3944 Yeah…..hate to break it to you but you my friend are using positivity as a denial of the problems the series is facing now. You seriously can’t depend on a bunch of kids movies to “save” the series
Saying the series never recovered is an overstatement. It might have affected the series but Sonic has recovered since then because most of the games and content in general that were made after being good. Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Unwiished, Sonic Rush Adventure, Sonic Colors, Sonic Colors DS, Sonic Generations, Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing, Sonic Generations 3DS, Sonic Lost World (debatable), Sonic Mania, Sonic IDW Comics, Sonic Team Racing, Sonic Origins, Sonic Frontiers, and Sonic Twitter Takeovers.
Sonic has never truly recovered because Sega no longer gives the games the budgets and time they need, and the series can't find an identity to stick with. The only games since 06 that truly fulfilled their intended vision were Generations and Mania, even the great ones like Unleashed had a heavy dose of jank and failure mixed in. Sonic is now a series filled with low confidence and half-bakery, and it's reputation is still tarnished in the eyes of the masses. Compare Sonic to Resident Evil, another series that ruined its reputation (after the release of 6). But nobody talks about 6 anymore. Why? Because Capcom just cares about Resident Evil far more than Sega cares about Sonic, they give their series the time and budget it deserves. Even with hiccups like the RE3 remake, they immediately turn back around and produce two iconic bangers (Village and 4 remake). I hope things change for Sonic, I really do. Sonic deserves better than what Sega is giving him
Reason sonic 06 got so much hate is because sonic was getting worse by the year 06 was the final straw and now sega caters to weirdos who dont play sonic games.
I said it before, I'll say it again. This, this right here, is the game that needs to be remastered/remade the most. Imo it had the potential to be the best 3D Sonic game, if not the best Sonic game, ever.
underrated masterpiece? no. enjoyable IF you know what you're doing and can exploit some if not all of the glitches? absolutely. i love the game, but i will never deny that it was a failure both critically and developmentally.
Sonic 06 was my very first Sonic game, so despite its faults and the messy history behind its development, it still means so much to me, and it CAN be fun. Not only that, but if you take the glitches and other problems with humor, it might be a "so bad it's good" game.
I remember wanting to play this game as a teenager and wanting to play it, but I didn't have a 360 or PS3. That ended up being a blessing, because I dodged a hydrogen bomb.
I grew up playing this on the 360 and I still play it on my 360 to this day. I’ve always loved the game even now when I noticed all of the problems I still love it
Am I the only one who genuinely enjoy the vanilla game without the need for nostalgia bias(I’m a teen and bought the game last Christmas. I thought it was good for the most part)?
(Can’t edit on the website apparently) also great video. I liked the perspective that was given and the lesson that not everyone has the patience(or sanity or something) to enjoy even a critical failure such as 06 and no matter how enjoyable it was, it’s ungodly number of flaws and issues at launch nearly destroyed the franchise we all know and love. This is simply reality, but considering the direction the franchise is now taking, I’m cool with it. Anyways, great vid👍🏽
You are not the only one. If you enjoyed it, then I'm sure plenty of other people did too. Besides, even as an adult who played this game as a kid, I've only gotten better at the game and appreciate some of its aspects more than I did before. I'm glad you have a fun time with it.
Apparently it did bc so many people are trying to say that 06 wasn't intrinsically flawed and that the game would have been amazing if the game wasn't full of bugs and had more polish. It wasn't just bugs and technical issues that doomed 06, it was bad ideas and bad execution of said bag ideas. The levels sucked, the bosses sucked, the game looks bad even for an early PS3 game, and every facet of the writing was atrocious from the plot to the character writing.
More effort was clearly put into Sonic '06's cutscenes, than anything else...which makes me wonder if instead of a whole game, it should've been an OVA Movie instead.
You Know.....I'm Making A Series Called "The Universal Adventures Series" which has been worked on ever since 2020 and I'm reanimating all of it , because the original version of the story was in comics that I hand made out of notebooks. The episode I'm working on right now is episode 6 for my TH-cam Channel series and it includes our blue hedgehog friend here and much more new original ideas. And It takes a darker story for a series and turns it into what Sonic 06 could have been but at the same time its (it's) own thing apart from some of the OG games. The series takes place 32 years after Sonic Unleashed.
Just got the CD soundtrack for this game in the mail today at 3:59p.m. and it's the "Sonic The Hedgehog Original Sound Track" CD and I'm listening to it while watching this! 8:24p.m. 10/22/2024
Sonic 06 was probably going to be pretty good I blame Sega for rushing Sonic Team. It seems like Sega FINALLY chilled out and is letting games come out when they're done
I played Sonic 06 as a kid with my dad a lot when I visited him. So im a bit little biased for why I got such fond memories of it. But even I remember me and my dad raging at the multiplayer shit, especially the sand wave level that was ridiculously hard (or I was just bad and my dad was too)
To be fair sonic rn is doing the best it’s ever has with sonic prime (being reviewed very well), sonic frontiers (selling more then 3 million units, and sonic superstars (looks very promising).
@@thejoker194 Yeah, Morio Kishimoto has been a good sport about the criticism for Frontiers which is awesome. Even the fact that they're adding the spindash to the game is pretty neat.
@@spontman Saved it to my playlist. Thanks. Also, what would you have changed about the Sonic series if you had a time machine? And what would be the outcome?
Sonic 06 (2006) is evil. It destroyed the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. It corrupted everyone and everything. If Sonic 06 was never made in the first place, none of this would have ever happened. But now it's already too late. 😔
I don't think P-06 makes people think 06 was good. I think it brings to light all the hidden potential that 06 had. There were so many good ideas, and some even got polished and implemented in future titles. I think that 06 deserves a total re-imagining. Not a remake, though that would be good too. Technically this would be a different game and I doubt Sega would ever Green light it. But if it were to happen. Sonic 06 would be the first bad game to ever get redemption, and Sega and Sonic Team would go down in history as the first to ever do this since only good games that are beloved get remakes or anything really.
Just finished watching someone's vods of playing Sonic 06 for the first time ever. Played it on the Xbox 360. And he liked it. Acknowledged the issues and jank, but still had fun and enjoyed it. What actually happened was that the fanbase has shitted on the game SO MUCH that they overhyped how bad it was going to be... so that the actually game turned out to not be that bad in comparison. lol The production started in 2004 but that definitely wasn't to address anything in Shadow's game. Maybe later on sure. But Shadow came out in 05 so... lol Ah what you meant to say is that Shadow The Hedgehog doesn't fit into what you're referring to when you say mainline. It's clearly a mainline entry in the story. But as a spin off, it's not a mainline "SONIC" title in name. Also I'm just realizing I watched this video already once you mentioned Skyrim and then the music and Gmod maps. I think I listened to it the first time while this time I'm watching it. Wonder why TH-cam recommended it to me AGAIN. lol Either way, yeah, Sonic 06 almost ruined the Sonic franchise but I'm glad it's always found a way to bounce back. I guess the ability to make a bad game after making plenty of good games made me realizing that making bad games doesn't mean a good one won't show up again later. It's definitely up and down, but I, personally, have enjoyed more ups than down soooooo I'm chillin. Edit: Okay correction. When you started mentioning the core attributes again it jogged my memory further. I ended up watching your video where you compiled multiple reviews together. So I never saw this on its own. I guess that's why YT recommended it... Yeah I recall you being very optimistic about the series pretty much UNTIL this game.
I think Elise is a reference to how sonic was going to have a human girlfriend when he was still called needle mouse. Anyways I honestly like sonic 06 even with it’s flaws. It’s definitely not a “hidden masterpiece” but it has decent aspects to it.
@@oranjaglad8648Honestly how people were fine with that but not this is hypocritical. Sonic isn’t the onky mainstream franchise that does this (Mario, Zelda, and many others do the same). Sonic is the only one where people loathe it.
@@bunsmasterbunny I mean, I guess people didn't like the Sonic and Elise thing mainly because of the way their relationship was handled (even I'll admit it was kinda bland; hell, they seemed more like friends throughout most of 06 than a couple, up until the infamous kiss scene, of course), but the thing is, people almost always scream that it's "bEaStiAliTy" as the main reason for why they hate it. Yet when Bowser, a literal turtle/dragon, tries to get with Peach, a human, in almost every single Mario game, no one cares.
Sonic 06 has its quirks like every over game. You can find glitches in everything. So, you can’t give this game so much credit because all games have their quirks
I feel like Sonic Heroes and Shadow The Hedgehog was the drop in quality that led Sega down a rabbit hole of bad decisions. It's hard to attribute it to just one game honestly.
Well you gotta think about it, shadow and heroes were made during a time (and even 06) where sega was just doing absolutely terribly financially and were desperate for releases even if it meant forgoing some quality.
@JohnDoe-dw3hj sonic as a franchise failed to grow and was even declining while the video game industry and the cost of making games grew, it was just recently sonic was able to reach the sales of sonic heroes with frontiers after almost 20 years, when you compare that to other legacy IP's like Super Mario, where wonder sold like 4 million copies in it's first week vs frontiers taking a whole year to sell 3.5 million copies.
I remember getting vanilla 06 on PS3 back when I was a kid, and I actually liked it. And to this day, I still sometimes go back in just to play through the level to get some of that nostalgic dopamine. Now that I’m an adult, I can see that 06 is not a good game, it has many flaws, and is far from a good game, but I don’t give a damn. I love it. The multiple playable characters, engaging multi-layered narrative(despite how shit it is) and Silver’s powers are pretty cool. Sega’s never touching the game again, but maybe we can help give 06 a second chance in the eyes of casuals who are too scarred by this game to give newer ones a chance
Sonic 06 was my first sonic game and i always thought it was good because me and my brother would always hope for a remake because i wanted to see a remake but it never happened
Funny you say the music sounds derivative and use Wave Ocean > Take On Me. I can kind of hear it, but it's not quite there. When there's a much more blatantly obvious example in the soundtrack. There's a riff in Radical Train's second act/mach speed section that is, I shit you not, a NOTE FOR NOTE ripoff of Rage Against the Machine's "Bombtrack" intro. Of course, I find that a COOL easter egg, but still, that'd fit your example better. Similarly, in White Acropolis's second act, there's a part of the music that sounds downright identical to the Shadow Moses theme from Metal Gear Solid. Fitting considering similar aesthetics between both but again, still....
Yeeeeah in hindsight I cringe at that part of this video. I think I just thought it would be funny to make a mashup of them since they share a similar chord progression, but yeah they really don't have any similarities outside of that.
Played 06 for the first time in May of 2022 on my journey to play the entire franchise chronologically in preparation for Frontiers (had 0 experience with the franchise prior to this undertaking so I have no nostalgia for anything). 06 is good. In fact, 06 is REALLY good. When I rank the mainline games it always finds its way to the top 5.
@@carnage0685 One of the most intriguing stories in the entire franchise to follow (on the games side at least) that is nowhere near as plot holy as everyone pretends it is and furthermore there are games that are just as if not even more plot holy and that includes SA2, the fanbase is hypocritical AF every time they use this as a reason to hate on the game. Best voice acting at the time in the franchise for both English and Japanese excluding SatAM. Best villain in the entire franchise in Mephiles the Dark. Good graphics and charming mo-cap that is overhated AF. A banger soundtrack that is easily the best in the entire franchise and it's not even close. The introduction of Silver, one of the most beloved extended cast members in the series. Speaking of the extended cast, they're all at their best in 06 excluding Knuckles and Tails, the characterization is absolutely spot on and that goes double for Shadow who has never been that good before and hasn't been that good since. Level design is mostly peak, 2P Mode is fun AF, gameplay is amazing and has depth and the hub worlds are iconic, if Soleanna wasn't hated due to 06 bias it would dead@$$ be the be one of the most beloved locations in the series. Sonic Man slaps and should have been a huge hit, needs to return. The bad of 06 are: Poor performance, especially on the PS3, that isn't as bad as people pretend it is, with most glitches needing you to go out of your way to find em, you rarely encounter anything in a casual playthrough. The snowboarding section sucks bad. The mach speed sections are phenomenal set pieces but are abysmal to play through, with terrible collision and controls. Rouge's wall climbing on Kingdom Valley is not functioning well. The Town Missions for the most part suck and the loading screens are an issue only if you do the Town Missions, on a casual playthrough they are not an issue whatsoever and don't last long, especially on the XBOX 360. Blaze's implementation into the narrative is very muddy and poorly thought out and even tho her inclusion is welcome and she gets a fascinating role in Silver's Episode she doesn't get introduced properly which kinda sours it. Sonic's Episode is the weakest one of all, while it has standout moments with Elise especially (him saving her at the intro, them escaping the Egg Carrier, them at that lake with the tree etc), she gets abducted like 7 times which is both repetitive and lame. 06 *IS* a good game, most of the bad even tho deserving of criticism like I did up there are too isolated and short-lived to negatively infact the experience that much. Sonic 06 is a 7/10 at worst and an 8/10 at best, it really is.
@@KOTSOSMC2002 Literally everything you said is either misinformation or completely inaccurate. The story is filled with unnecessary plot holes with the time travel schtick. The glitches are not overexaggerated in the slightest as pretty much everyone encounters one without even trying. The voice acting is absolutely terrible and that goes without saying. SA1 came out in 1998 and 06 makes that games voice acting sound like the Japanese delivery. Ryan Drummond will always be the best English Sonic. Level design is mid. Controls are terrible. Visuals are terrible with the mo cap and the terrible models. Pretty much every 3D Sonic game prior to this one is more polished, more visually appealing, better designed, better written, better voiced (particularly Heroes), and less infuriating than this one. 2/10
All these long essays in video, text and audio just for everyone on the internet to say unanimously that this game stinks. 28:11 TBF, Love makes people do crazy things. In fact, Amy also said in this game's story the if given the choice between the world and Sonic, she would choose Sonic. Silver also pondered this question. It's just an exaggeration of the trolley problem.
I feel like Frontiers is a spiritual successor to this game, the story is close to the same level of depth (especially the plot of Update 3, which I will not talk about) The return of photosurrealism (A realistic world but heavily stylized) And characterization that isn't as shallow as a puddle.
I haven't played 06 so I don't have anything to say about gameplay, but I do have some of my own comments on a few things said here. So first off on Dan Green's Knuckles, I get where you are coming from and I read the text you put in the video and your comment down below. His 06 performance is nothing to write home about, it's a job and that's about it. He is my favorite voice for Knuckles and he does a good job with the character in Sonic X. He just sounds tough, a lot of the other voices for the character are missing that. The only one that has that toughness I feel is the newest va for him. I'll talk about the music in another comment, it will also give you more comments so hopefully the yt overlord likes that.
Now the part of the video that I found the most interesting, music. I have listened to the ost twice and I skimmed through it to get a refresher for this comment, I won't mention the great songs you already talked about that are very good. I'll start with Wave Ocean, there's two version of this one where it's the waters edge and the inlet. The waters edge has a great chill feel to it that works, now the part that you said sounds like take on me and is derivative. I never got Take on Me vibes when I listened to it; for the song to be truly derivative it needs to have similar instrumentation which Wave Ocean Inlet doesn't have. In Take On Me the bass is very punchy and groovy, Wave Ocean doesn't have that. The percussion is also a completely different style, Take On Me also uses lots of synths which aren't used a whole lot in Wave Ocean, just subtly in the background. The biggest difference is the electric guitars, Take On Me actually has acoustic guitars in the background but you can barely hear them with the vocals. They have no where near the same tone as the e-guitars in Wave Ocean, the only thing similar with them is the riffs. The riff played on the final chorus in Take On Me sounds alike to an extent to the one in Wave Ocean Inlet, but they have completely different feels since WOI is going for punk while TOM is not. So I do not agree that WOI is derivative since it lacks many similarities. A good example of a derivative song in Sonic is the original music used for Sonic in Lego Dimensions (I promise my comments on the rest of the songs will not be this long). I find that there's quite a few pretty good songs like: Soleana New City, Flame Core, Radical Train, Aquatic Base and Crisis City. The boss themes are pretty forgettable with the exception of Solaris Phase 2 which is one of the best boss themes in the franchises history. The thing I noticed you didn't really mention is the other vocal themes, His World isn't the only one and the other versions of that song are pretty great as well. All Hail Shadow is super cool, Dreams of an Absolution is super fun and My Destiny is quite beautiful. I do agree that it's not as good as some claim it to be but it's far from being mid. There's plenty of great songs in the ost.
I do like most of the tracks you listed, but it's hard for me to ignore just how much of the rest of the soundtrack is made up of mediocre tracks like Tropical Jungle, Dusty Desert, Soleanna Castle Town, most of the boss tracks, etc. The game has a few bangers, but I feel like the quality of the OST as a whole is often overstated, especially considering the rest of the series.
I'm sorry but what a terrible way to describe Dan Green's performance as Knuckles. Ik we have to respect opinions here but damn this one is NOT it. He captures Knuckles' tough attitude perfectly. Both this and the modern voice don't sound anywhere near like surfer dudes. Maybe the modern take is a lot more laid back, but it's nothing crazy like other 4Kids voice actors. Other than that, it's a solid video yet again.
It did definitely take a while for the cast to finally get a grip on their characters' voices but the disrespect here is so wild lmao. Have you ever heard any of their other performances?
I regret simplifying my opinion for this script because I ended up sounding way more negative about Dan Green than I intended. I don't think his voice acting is bad or anything, I just don't think it's a good fit for Knuckles.
It never ceases to amuse me that the only reason Shadow directly states for not helping Mephiles wipe out the human race is that he doesn't want to be told what to do. Before people crucify me I'd like to state I know that's not the SOLE reason and maybe he just doesn't want to give his adversary any more information than he needs to but "I don't wanna destroy the world because you're telling me to and I hate being told what to do!" is just the perfect edgy hardass response to a question he didn't really need to answer.

Despite what the Internet says Sonic 2006 is still one of my favorite Sonic games!
Good video.
Can't believe Shadow made a review of 06
I've never played Sonic 06 even though I grew up with this franchise, maybe one day I'll experience this game myself even though it has many bugs that won't stop me from playing it. Great video as usual and keep up the good work. Oh yes and happy birthday Sonic!
Well technically you can
But it doesn't have nearly as many bugs as the retail version
If I were to remake 06...
- Implement gameplay fixes from P-06
- More difficulty mode, with Easy difficulty ditching life system and has fewer hits to defeat the boss (borrowed from Colors Ultimate)
- Playable Super Hedgehogs for act trial mode, unlockable after completing the game in Normal or harder difficulty
- Remake the graphics, in style of Frontiers using Hedgehog Engine 2
- Some rewrite to fill plot holes and pacing, including Blaze's backstory and her relation to 06's lore, keeping most of the original plot elements intact
- (Optionally) slap the title Adventure 3 and call it a day
Sonic 06 was the first game I ever played. I know it's bad, but the nostalgia hits so hard for me.
yeah best game, the bugs just makes this game unique lmfo
What about Mario Sunshine?
@@traviscunningham7062 I've played it twice (on GC and Switch), years after 06, 100% both times and I found it to be pretty fun after Galaxy was too easy for me.
Damn you’re young
I do agree with awsomex because have you played Sonic boom wii u ? that sucks more then 06 and if you think 06 is the worst game then you didn't played boom. And boom we'll never get a remake fan game like 06. If you hate 06 then play Project 06 or Sonic Unleashed or Sonic Frontiers.
I can't believe I finished this game 100%. It was just horrendous to put it mildly.
Mania:
So just completely ignore Mania’s existence?
while mania was a smashing success at the end of the day, the same year we also got forces later down the line which seemed to be a bigger game that fans were also looking forward to just to get disappointed when it released.
@@Izhen_UwU sure but to say it’s worse than the 2000s is a bit of a stretch
I'd honestly agree. You could tell Shadow, Secret Rings and 06 had ambition and a dream that meant you could at the very least, appreciate the characters and story. Lost World, Rise Of Lyric and Forces played it so astronomically safe they were boring at times. That's not even getting into what is possibly the worst writing in the franchise
Playing Sonic Unleashed after this game was a breath of fresh air to me back in 08 lol
I suffered with the original 06 aswell, but on the PS3 versions
one of the reasons I liked it was because I saw its potential, which got wasted on the deadlines and development being so crappy
P06 made that potential shine like a diamond
15:15 Is it bad that my first thought was "What are Sonic and Elise doing in Windows XP?"?!
Whether it was ever considered by the devs or not, this is a great idea. This would fix so many of my gripes with this game's story.
@@carnage0685
I feel like they just didn't know in what direction to go with Sonic's story, because they had a clear route with what they did with Shadow and Silver's.
I thought it was originally meant to be some random fantasy game but then they added the Sonic characters in
@@SocksFCGameArchives ironically it might be the other way around
If your opinion on an entire franchise is ruined because of one game that came out more than a decade ago
Are you still even a fan?
The same with dubs. If you’re complaining about dubs being bad because of one company that’s gone for 12 years, then you’re even more stuck in the past than the company.
How the actual f*ck did Elise’s dad expect her not to cry?
Wanna know something funny? Twilight Princess which came out a few days before Sonic 06, was actually more successful.
Because it wasnt rushed, and dónt suffer the same problems as Sonic team during the development of Sonic 06
Twilight Princess was originally released in 2005, but they delayed it to 2006.
P-06 is the best Sonic Game ever made!
Yes
At the end of the game they erase what happened though. Yes they did but, it still happened. By that logic Ocarina of Time isn’t canon because Zelda sends Link back in Time at the end.
Exactly, Super Mario Galaxy 1 might as well not be canon while we're at it.
This game is where Sonic started to become a joke in the late 2000’s and the entire 2010’s decade.
06 was ahead of its time thats for sure.Kinda like virtual boy,it was released on a time when it wasnt ready
As a kid, 06 was my introduction to Sonic. I’ve always liked it for the ideas it had but not all of my memories of it were so positive.
And Frontiers rebuilt that icon being the most successful game in the series, topping sonic heroes that held that title, believe it or not
Didn't outsell Heroes yet
Not enough

@@davidgeorge3944
Yeah…..hate to break it to you but you my friend are using positivity as a denial of the problems the series is facing now.
AYO! HE'S ALIVE!

underrated masterpiece? no. enjoyable IF you know what you're doing and can exploit some if not all of the glitches? absolutely. i love the game, but i will never deny that it was a failure both critically and developmentally.
Sonic 06 was my very first Sonic game, so despite its faults and the messy history behind its development, it still means so much to me, and it CAN be fun. Not only that, but if you take the glitches and other problems with humor, it might be a "so bad it's good" game.

I broke my gaming teeth on OG Sonic 1. This game broke my heart
What actually happened was that the fanbase has shitted on the game SO MUCH that they overhyped how bad it was going to be... so that the actually game turned out to not be that bad in comparison. lol
The production started in 2004 but that definitely wasn't to address anything in Shadow's game. Maybe later on sure. But Shadow came out in 05 so... lol
Ah what you meant to say is that Shadow The Hedgehog doesn't fit into what you're referring to when you say mainline.
It's clearly a mainline entry in the story. But as a spin off, it's not a mainline "SONIC" title in name.
Also I'm just realizing I watched this video already once you mentioned Skyrim and then the music and Gmod maps. I think I listened to it the first time while this time I'm watching it. Wonder why TH-cam recommended it to me AGAIN. lol
Either way, yeah, Sonic 06 almost ruined the Sonic franchise but I'm glad it's always found a way to bounce back.
I always thought Elise was meant to be an attempt at bringing back Madonna (aka the scrapped human girlfriend) and her concept in some way too.
The fact Madonna was ever a thing invalidates peoples hatred of SonicxElise. It’s not bestiality there’s nothing wrong with it.
@@bunsmasterbunny Also Sara from the Sonic OVA. I also bring her up because she’s some sort of half human/cat hybrid.
@@oranjaglad8648Honestly how people were fine with that but not this is hypocritical. Sonic isn’t the onky mainstream franchise that does this (Mario, Zelda, and many others do the same).

My only problem was trying to jump up a really tall wall. Im not a glitcher like anybody else.
Have you tried P-06?
yup
I honestly fuck with Sonic 06
You know, they could do the whole fur thing now. Since console hardware has improved since then.
im kinda glad 06 got ruin bc p06 is probably better than anything sega couldve done even if given the time and resources bc of all the qol features
Shadow is UNQUESTIONABLY mainline.
Personally, I really enjoy playing this game and its despite the flaws. Heck, I’d much rather play this over SA1, and I will die on that hill
Even hotter take: I would play this game over SA2 any day!
So, can it be remade for a better experience?
Played 06 for the first time in May of 2022 on my journey to play the entire franchise chronologically in preparation for Frontiers (had 0 experience with the franchise prior to this undertaking so I have no nostalgia for anything). 06 is good. In fact, 06 is REALLY good. When I rank the mainline games it always finds its way to the top 5.
how is it good lmao
@@carnage0685 it's not
@@KOTSOSMC2002 Literally everything you said is either misinformation or completely inaccurate. 2/10
@@Benjawin6671 Nope.
All these long essays in video, text and audio just for everyone on the internet to say unanimously that this game stinks.

TBF, Love makes people do crazy things. In fact, Amy also said in this game's story the if given the choice between the world and Sonic, she would choose Sonic. Silver also pondered this question. It's just an exaggeration of the trolley problem.
I feel like Frontiers is a spiritual successor to this game, the story is close to the same level of depth (especially the plot of Update 3, which I will not talk about)
The return of photosurrealism (A realistic world but heavily stylized)
And characterization that isn't as shallow as a puddle.
Same, update 3's trailer got me hyped! September 28th can't come soon enough haha
My guy you're like 13 years later to the whole Sonic 06 bad video game essays
ok
Truth is never too late. 😞 smh. . .
@@-oldhope-Yeah, this truth is one of the least needed things in this fanbase as of today.
Scott Dreier was better
Bro you couldn’t wait til tomorrow to upload this? It’s my boys birthday today, let him live. 😢
@@spontman fair enough, can't argue with that.
Have you ever heard any of their other performances?
wild mice 🐁 ?
I regret simplifying my opinion for this script because I ended up sounding way more negative about Dan Green than I intended. I don't think his voice acting is bad or anything, I just don't think it's a good fit for Knuckles.
Well there is sonic p06.
Spontmon’s review is probably in the top 3 of Sonic 06 reviews that I’ve ever seen. The other two are Geek Critique and J’s Review’s.
Rofl that burp
It never ceases to amuse me that the only reason Shadow directly states for not helping Mephiles wipe out the human race is that he doesn't want to be told what to do.
Before people crucify me I'd like to state I know that's not the SOLE reason and maybe he just doesn't want to give his adversary any more information than he needs to but "I don't wanna destroy the world because you're telling me to and I hate being told what to do!" is just the perfect edgy hardass response to a question he didn't really need to answer.
