Seriously, it's the same energy as going to your friend's house and having him beat you over and over at a game you've never played before, then offering you "hints" every time you lose. It's not challenging, it's just unfair. Like, all I ask is that you explain the damn game to me BEFORE penalizing me for not knowing how to play it. The only thing potentially more annoying than a game that barely offers any instruction is one that over-tutorializes you to the point where you just want it to shut the hell up and let you play (looking at you, practically every Nintendo game since the debut of the GameCube). That said, never explaining the mechanic required to beat the last boss of the damn game was a truly...unique decision on part of the designers, but I guess it wouldn't be a proper step forward for Sonic Team if they didn't also take two steps backward at the same time.

You forgot to mention how Sega butchered the designs for Eggman's robots in this game. Colors was the first mainline game to bring back the classic badniks and redesigned them to make them fit in the modern universe but Lost World decided to chibifi them and they look awful as a result.

This game REALLY copies Mario in _every single way._ The planet-shaped levels and wonky gravity copy Mario Galaxy. The world themes copy the worlds of the New Super Mario Bros. games. Sonic's parkour moves are an attempt at copying Mario's advanced moves. The Deadly Six are an attempt at making a Sonic equivalent of the Koopalings, and their boss fights show it. Zavok turns giant and chases you up a platforming segment, also copying how Bowser often turns giant after you defeat him in the New Super Mario Bros. games. Its REDICULOUS!

Despite this game being part of my childhood I agree with this video to some extent. Being a kid when I heard about this game definitely reeled me in with how colorful it looked. The reason I played Sonic Dash was because I discovered you could fight Zazz in it and in my opinion Zazz is awesome in both his intense design and over the top personalty and it's easy for me to see why he gets so much attention nowadays.
That said I definitely agree with how the game sucks at explaining things to you. On my first playthrough I never used running across walls in 3D and jumping from wall to wall for a long time. When I got to that part of Lava Mountain Act 3 with the green hover wisp and running on walls over lava, I just used the wisp to go atop the wall and run across it skipping it.
I also agree with how the game sucks at the ending. Once Zavok's defeated the game forgets the Deadly Six existed and Eggman takes over as the main villain. I didn't like this betrayal twist as we've seen him as the final boss in so many games.
In my opinion Sonic Lost World is quite good it's fun to speedrun the levels, using different tricks in ways to make it done quicker, like a Sonic game is supposed to do.

  • @Eric_Black134

As far as gameplay is concerned, I think that the 3DS version of the game solves just about every problem you brought up. Movement is fully directional, AND speed is consistent. The wall jump will always send you away from the wall. There is a kick move, but it's more like a stun/ranged attack, giving it a much more clear purpose when facing enemies. The bosses are still ridiculously easy, but there's never a moment where you're trying to figure out what button finishes the fight. And the levels are a lot less gimmicky from what I remember.
I'm not saying the game is phenomenal or anything (there's a reason why I haven't played it in a while) but it sure is a MASSIVE improvement on the Wii U/PC version

I agree with most of this. I'm not even fussy with games. I did like some levels. The levels you listed were also my favourites. But I think I am the one person who likes the snowball level. I can't even explain it. I just enjoyed the level. My least favourite part of the game was actually the story. I absolutely hated how they butchered the characterisation of every character. Every character is also wildly inconsistent from I guess plot reasons? Tails especially. He is really edgy for some reason, and that just isn't in character for tails. But sometimes he is in character, and the contrast is so confusing! E.g. he was mad at sonic for destroying the conch against his advice, but then happily raised his hand when Sonic said something like "who thinks eggman is dumb" (that's not what he said. I just can't remember the quote). Also, he ends up being incredibly sassy and sarcastic. From my knowledge of tails, he is earnest, hardworking, smart, and idolises sonic. Tails is not the same character in lost world, and I hate it!

Even among Nintendo platform exclusives (regardless of contract or not), the Wisps in Colors were so much more appealing and developed than anything Lost World tries throwing at the table...and felt far more like a Sonic game. Forces restored the boost formula but with the same shockingly low quality that this game holds, and Frontiers feels like it's trying to find a better direction (IMO) but also like it absolutely needs another attempt and more development to get it right. I don't mind hearing they plan to stick to the open world though, it has potential, just needs more time to cook and fewer 'hangover' elements from the prior decade (become more distanced from the glaringly flawed decisions of games like this one and Forces).

Great presentation, good albeit forgettable soundtrack, good level design, polished AF and kinda fun gameplay, second best story in the Meta Era of games behind Forces (neither of them are high bars, just saying), peak Eggman (best he's been since Shadow the Hedgehog), a fun 3DS port. I'm a sucker for new lore and hell, Lost Hex and the Zeti aren't anything groundbreaking or good but I appreciate the addition nonetheless. Lost World is a good game, one of the most forgettable and it ranks pretty low even on my list of favorite Sonic games but it's by no means bad.
The Deadly Six in particular are more important to the overall timeline than they originally seem. Not only does Zavok and some of the D6 appear in Sonic at the Olympic Games (not the Mario crossover game, the Sonic-only one) and Team Sonic Racing (as well as being referenced in Sonic Frontiers), they're a HUGE deal in the canon IDW comics. By the end of saga 2 they become the main villains of the Metal Virus storyline (and quite effectively too), with Zavok playing a major role later on in the third saga by assisting Starline with the Tricore. Hell, the 5-issue spin-off comic Sonic the Hedgehog: Bad Guys is essentially a Zavok & Starline spin-off.
I'd hardly call Lost World and the Deadly Six beloved (even for me, i dislike all of em except Zavok and Zeena) but I'd also hardly call them irrelevant or unimportant cause they most definitely aren't, that just feels disingenuous.
Also, Wisps still hanging around has been explained. After Sonic and Tails saved Mother Wisp and the destroyed the amusement park in Sonic Colors a lot of the Wisps decided to not go back to planet Wisp snd stick around Earth and its surrounding planets (including Lost Hex and most likely even Little Planet as well), hence why they exist in Lost World, Forces, Team Sonic Racing and the IDW comics. This isn't some headcanon excuse, this has actually been established, just letting you know!

22:14 Stuff like this is exactly what I disliked about this game. There are multiple instances where the game teaches you something and then takes it back/changes the same thing's properties without telling the player with instant death as a punishment.
7:04 Desert Ruins is a level where if you fall the camera falls with you. 22:00 This level that you had to replay kills you at the bottom of the camera.
12:50 "Metal Gear but bad" is the one I hated the most. This level expects the player to suddenly be aware of the elements in the background (something that only a point and click adventure would do), then wait in front of said objects or be instantly killed no matter your ring count for playing this game how it and previous Sonic games played.
Any of these scenarios would be like if you played Cuphead and Grim Matchstick instantly kills you when you shoot one of his fireballs on phase 3 once no matter how much health you have. People already dislike Grim Matchstick, but imagine how many people would be confused by what's even happening in this scenario. That would seem pretty game breaking, and here we have that happening *three times.*

So to anyone still curious about the 3DS port, I'll give y'all a somewhat basic rundown of the differences.
    • No focus on rescuing the critters Eggman supposedly kidnapped making speedruns and playing through the game in general much easier... for the most part.
    • Drastically different level design.
    Some are good, others bad.
    • Different boss fights.
Instead of Acts 2 and 4 having boss fights at the end, Lost World 3DS follows the formula from other Sonic games consisting of three acts then a boss act.
    • Music differences.
While Lost World 3DS does share music with its Wii U/PC counterpart, some tracks either aren't used or are played in different acts.
    • Red Star Ring Rewards.
In the Wii U/PC version Red Star Rings unlock the Chaos Emeralds just like in Sonic Colors, 3DS unlocks extra acts which heavily feature a specific Wisp, often using a pre-existing act with a modified level layout. Also, Red Star Rings are not present in Boss Fights in the 3DS version nor the Tutorial stage, meaning Lava Mountain doesn't have any Red Star Rings to collect and meaning there's a 20 Red Star Ring difference between both versions.
    • Bonus Content.
Wii U had circus minigames and DLC levels which could reward players with more critters or extra lives. 3DS had actual Special Stages (which will unlock Super Sonic when all 7 are completed) and a Hard Mode which removes nearly all the Rings and Capsules with 1-UPs and replaces Red Star Rings with 5-Rings.
    • Miscellaneous Differences.
Wii U/PC features the Cyan, Indigo, Magenta, Yellow, Orange, Black, Crimson and Green Wisps while the 3DS version features the Cyan, Indigo, Yellow, Gray, Red and Ivory Wisps. The Gray Wisp *is* in the Wii U version, but is exclusive to the multiple mode.
RC Vehicles and stored items are present in both versions, but the 3DS version not only has a bigger limit, but also allows you to create and transfer RC Vehicles to the Wii U version from the 3DS version. You can also create items in the 3DS version, but none can be transferred to the Wii U version and the items that can be created are different from what the Wii U/PC version has.
How you make RC Vehicles and Items is by collecting Materials from beating levels and heading to Tails' Laboratory. Depending on the zone and the rank you get at the end depends on how many Materials you'll receive excluding the Special Stages which will give a specific Material depending on the act. Tails' Lab can also be upgraded which is how you unlock more craftable items and RC Vehicles.
Tails' Laboratory also allows you to listen to the in-game music and view the cutscenes whenever you want.
The 3DS version's multiplayer is a bit more robust compared to Wii U. You have Race, Battle and Special Stage with up to four players either Local, Online (R.I.P.) or Download Play. Download Play limits players to Windy Hill and Special Stage 1 while the other options are limited to how much of the game you've completed. Also, VS. Mode allows for more Materials to be collected in Races if you reach the goal before the last player finishes. It's not a whole lot, but it's a nice bonus for the really fast and skilled players.
    • Boss Differences.
While the Wii U/PC version has different fights for each of the Zeti. The 3DS version has only one fight per Zeti not including the Boss Rushes.
Zazz and Zomnom take place on a spherical planet, Zeena and Zor fight on a flat plane and Master Zik and Zavok have 2D fights. Timing is key for all fights, but the Wisps are also important. Some fights make them mandatory others make them optional. And before anyone asks, yes the fights are repeated beat-for-beat in Lava Mountain just with a different environment.
The fight against Eggman is a bigger Nega-Wisp Armor reskin in the 3DS version compared to the Wii U/PC version. Straight down to the attacks being combined once the bosses health is low enough and having to mash the Homing Attack button.
One last thing to mention is that Sonic's alternate Homing Attack is a shockwave kick (referred to as a "Somersault" in-game) that stuns most enemies. Some foes will need to be hit with it before you can actually attack them. Also both versions feature the Bounce move but the Wii U/PC version has a hard-limit with three bounces. 3DS is indefinite but allows for a similar benefit to the Wii U/PC version.
TL:DR for all the lazy readers. The 3DS version is a mixed bag in terms of overall quality, but also has many features the Wii U/PC version lacks.
Also I probably forgot to mention a few things.

Hedgehog Engine 2 is apparently only a lighting engine. AFAIK it didn't make its debut until Forces, so Lost World's renderer was probably either a scaled-down version of HE1 (as was the case with Colors), or a different engine entirely.
You're right on the money about Sonic's player controller though. The gameplay engine was redone from scratch in Lost World, and both Forces and Frontiers use a modified version of it, which explains the janky handling, physics, etc. in both of those games. Even the recently added spindash in Frontiers seems to have been copied and pasted from Lost World.

Heck it seems to me the devs were arguing with eachother of whether Zavok or Eggman should be the villain but then they just settled to have Eggman be a twist villain once Zavok was out of the picture just to have him as the last boss even though they could have done something more creative like having the Zeti combine into a mega Zeti or something. Sure the Six have bad personalities but I'd take something original over a rehash of Sonic Color's final boss any day. .

of that nintendo exclusive deal it was actually the mario & sonic at the sochi games that was one of the 3 games alongside lw/boom though don't blame you as it was forgettable.(really love that universal gravity idea as i would really love a game where you could play around with sonic's speed.:3)
i love heroes as it was at least passable and had problems with gameplay but at least showed potential, lost world was the start of sonic's 2nd dark age(don't consider the spinoff's of the classic era part of it as i consider it more experimental.) that didn't need to exist with how great parts of unleashed, colors & generations were starting a foundation that was the best in 3d sonic since the adventure games/heroes as it was extremely bare like the lost hex(says something that the classic games actually had better reasons for sonic exploring and wanting to save these areas as in hindsight they might as well have made the lost hex earth or little planet to close out that plot hole from sonic 4 ep 2./really feels like it should've been a classic game.)
really the worst of the writing as it's the worst version of tails(hated forces version but everyone was bad in that game and really showed sega didn't show the writers their history as it was forced and tails would be smart enough with the times they teamed up to know when to trust eggman instead of being an idiotic brat.).
while i actually liked amy(loved she never once until it was looking like the end never bothered sonic with her annoying lover gimmick even once, focused on helping the animals bringing back her sa1/heroes care for others.)knuckles pointless appearance(would've made sense if he was on there beating up the zeti/literally smacking sense into tails with what he experienced with how much he kept challenging sonic like cranky kong.),tails getting turned into a robot going nowhere(at least in colors it was to show eggman's threat compared to being wasted here.) and just forgetting the rest of the series alongside forces.
alongside infinite the deadly six being the biggest example of why if you're going for a non eggman bad guy have them have a presence & actual personality/have a reason for being evil(sad they took until the idw comics to make them enjoyable.).
while i think other sonic games having better animation do find it pleasing for an attempt at the wii u even if tbh it feels stiff.
the gameplay really showed the games biggest problem of having no identity shoving gameplay styles(that even if the adventure games had a similar flaw they had enough of an identity remembering sonic's charm.) that could've been shoved into other sega games like the flying sections(that really felt like they should've been tornado sections.) or styles not working around sonic's style that the horrible tutorials don't clue you on like the parkour.
the wisp being shoved in with no story reason why they returned(that i'm glad frontiers dropped.) when they were fun power ups in colors.
do love the final battle music(also in the 3ds version eggman's continuing point of sounding like he was about to snap that i wish forces took advantage of.) and in hindsight wish this had been a mario & sonic game instead of the olympic games as sonic being slower/the dlc actually showing the gameplay had foundation for a possible adventure revival like how it brought back the spindash/sa2's bounce attack while handling the charged homing attack better.

Lost World's main problem is unituitive and explains his mechanics pretty badly: most of the knowledge I got from learning the game is by reading the poster manual inside the wii u case (yeah, lost world's manual is a poster ).
But when you take the time to read it and get around some of the quirks, Lost world becomes a lot better, especially when you chain spin dashes and parkour together. Like the boost, it's not "momentum" but creates it's own fast rhythm, and using the parkour to avoid obstacles and for platforming in spots like the Frozen Factory Act 1 part you shows at 18:50 for reaching those springs is satisfying: it's not required using the parkour there but it's not out of place having an element of player's choice in a sonic (although lost world has too much of it hurting the game at the end)

As long as the player always knows which way is down (previous 3D Sonic games do this well by always keeping the camera upright), no extra HUD elements would be necessary. Though I suppose if the camera had to go upside down for spheres and such, a compass or arrow on screen would probably be enough to keep players oriented.

Still I think the Modern stages of Generations are the worthier successor of Unleashed in terms of the boost formula, dialing back level length somewhat but not too much, but in several stages opening up the 3D world for paths a bit more than Unleashed did.

Lost World is genuinely my least favorite Sonic game, in fact it fails at being one on every single level. The aesthetics are baby-like and completely lack any and all edge the series once had, and like you said they just pull from the same tired "NSMB" world tropes that Nintendo fans were already burnt out on at the time. The music feels like a less interesting take on Mario 3D World's style, again there's just no edge or pazazz like prior soundtracks even if it's not technically "bad", it doesn't feel like a Sonic soundtrack at all. The story is the worst in the series, from the awful nonsense plot to the unbearably cringe-worthy dialogue, and the cutscene presentation is honestly even worse than you made it out to be. How many cutscenes take place in Eggman's "Lab" that somehow keeps moving locations throughout the game? It's just an unexplained black room, remember in SA2 when we got cool locations like the Space Colony Arc or Eggman's Pyramid Base? I can't care about the story at all, because they legit give you no reason to care. Sonic 3K did a better job building lore around its location, and it didn't even have dialogue. Hell, Sonic 1 did better. I care more about South Island in that game than I do the Lost Hex.
If the gameplay was good maybe I could excuse all of this, but it's horrible like you said. The controls are unintuitive and work against you, the moveset is cluttered and confusing, the level design is unfocused and often clunky, and Sonic feels horrible to control. It's not just the diagonals that have different physics like you said, even just moving left/right instead of forward/back is a completely different speed, you can feel how much slower you are whenever the game forces you to be in 2D. Oh yeah, the game is like 60% 2D because I guess Sega just couldn't give them the budget to make an actual 3D Sonic game, but "oh well" at least I'm not falling through the floor like 06. Congrats guys, you fixed Sonic!!... at the cost of everything that made the series special.

@@ataladin87 I mean in regards to the combat. There's no real sense of timing or urgency to the combat, you mostly just mash buttons, watch a cool animation and you win.

@ataladin87 I haven't played Unleashed in a while so I can't really say much in its regard. I will say the game throws a lot more at you in terms of challenge, probably because Werehog combat has you fight more enemies at once instead of small groups spread across a large world with the odd giant monster here and there.

This game is not great but... if you play through a game that is loaded with parallel walls and never figure out how to jump across them until the final level when it is required, that's on you man.
