Big Finish Quick Picks: "The Fires of Vulcan

    Something Inside is a story where hardly anything happens, but no one will shut up. If I ever hear the phrase “brain worm” again it’ll be too soon. Memory Lane is a joy, I loved it, even if the contrivances that are revealed at the end regarding the nature of the astronaut’s captors are pretty silly. Really? They’ve never even thought of recordings? Absolutely silly fun. Absolution is just so boring, and I struggle to remember many specific aspects of the story besides C’rizz becoming a totally boring generic bad guy who wants to eat the universe. If there had been more buildup to this i would probably like it more. I do love how awful the Doctor is about C’rizz’s death, as it does show that unfortunately, Rassilon wasn’t totally wrong in The Next Life. That last scene between Charley and Eight is wonderful and upsetting, and leads perfectly into The Girl Who Never Was. The last Eight + Charley story made me SOB. Like you said, it’s reminiscent of Twelve losing his memories of Clara, or Donna losing her memories of Ten, with the added ambiguity of whether Charley lives or not (spoilers: she lives). The Cybermen work well enough, even if the nature of cyber-control seems to constantly change depending on who is writing these guys. I wish modern who writers would just decide on a clear set of rules for the cybermen instead of waffling so much on their basics. Also, Byron is annoying and I hate him, but I think that’s the point. Definitely my favorite out of these last four stories. It’s a real shame that big finish never really returned to the experimentalism of this era of the monthly range, because I’ve found the most joy out of practically any doctor who stories from some of the odd ducks and strangeness of this period (The Natural History of Fear, for instance). Thanks for making this guide!

    I feel like the Timeless Children has ruined Terror Firma for me slightly, because I recently gave it a relisten and couldn’t help but make comparisons. Humanity has been almost wiped out by a classic Doctor Who villain, the Doctor discovers that a secret past was stolen from them. The Doctor struggles with this revelation for a brief amount of time before swiftly moving on. It even ends in a showdown with the Doctor holding a weapon that can wipe out all life on the planet within an instant. Granted, it’s marginally better in that the hidden history doesn’t completely mess with the show’s foundations, and the Doctor doesn’t cowardly hand off the self sacrifice to someone else, but still, the vibes are just too similar for me to ignore.

    I don't think the Dr has unlimited regeneration and here's my argument why. the timelords erased the drs memory and turned them back into a child and the division tried to bury the whole timeless child stuff from the rest of timelord society probably due to the potential backlash and it may even have been a serious criminal offence caused so they had every reason to erase the drs mind and re set their life. However simply re setting the drs life isn't enough as eventually hitting the 13th life had the Dr had a 14th 15th etc people would start questioning why they have exceeded the limit without reason and the Dr would question it also. So the only way to avoid this would be to cap the drs ability to regenerate to 12 like everyone else in the hope they would just live out those 13 lives and die like everyone else. Further evidence is that the 11th Dr was definite about being on his last life later before regenerating he tells Clara he could feel the rengeration starting so the fact 11 when actually dying of old age prior could not sense any form of regeneration ability that suggest there is none. Then the timelords give him a new set and only then can he regenerate.

    • @thatDamnAusWhoFan
      @thatDamnAusWhoFan 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You raise an interesiting point. I try not to question it to be honest. The canon surrounding the doctor and how many lives they have are tied in so many knots at this point its best not to try and make sense of the madness. Otherwise I'll start pulling at threads and questioning why there are 3 different Atlantic's that end in 3 different ways, why did the 1st doctor make illusions to being a human from the future who built the tardis? I have a very soft approach to canon in this show. Would be fun to make a video on this though

    My biggest gripe about Minuet in Hell is how the whole story just feels beneath the Doctor’s pay grade. Minor spoilers: Literally the minute he gets his memory back, the Doctor resolves the entire plot within 20 minutes, which makes the previous three parts feel like a waste of time, as though the writers knew they had to find some way of artificially padding it out.

      That was in reference to the episode eutopia, in season 3 when Jack finally catches up with the doctor and the doctor tells him the reason he never came back for him is because him and the tardis are so repulsed by him the tardis ran to the end of everything just to try and shake him off. Hes a living breathing fixed point. A complex space time event that should not exist, which makes sense. The doctor totally could have gone back for him. This isn't adric we're talking about.
