I quite like The Next Doctor. I really like David Morrissey's performance in the episode (though the tone is all over the place) and its a half-decent Cyberman story, even factoring in the Shades and the giant mech. I like that the episode is a story that happens to be set at Christmas, instead of an episode written around a Christmassy concept like so many other Christmas Specials
Pleased to see that Husbands… and Last Christmas were not on the list as I watched them both yesterday and really enjoyed them. Surprised as I seem to have dim but mostly negative memories of them. Happy Crimbo all 👍😁
Apart from last part of the Christmas special, the husbands of river song felt really unimpressive for me. This was also the first time there wasn’t a doctor who series in between Christmas specials so it was very strange to have 2 Christmas specials from previous years follow on from one another. Another reason why I didn’t think much of the return of doctor mysterio (that and it’s just silly)
that one of those I have seen The Doctor the Widow and the Wardrobe I have a lot of nostalgia I get it because I watched it with my family before my dad passed away I know it's full of flaws but I can't help but love it for that I hope you have a happy holiday and i am very excited for what you're gonna do next year
Something I wanted to comment on is your comment on RTD’s use of queer coded villains being problematic. I think it’s important to note that unlike disability (to my knowledge) RTD is a gay man, so I think the use of queer coding in some of his villains isn’t particularly problematic at least in his case
I get what you're saying and I don't think there's any malice behind any of his characters, but The trope itself is the problem regardless of his sexuality which is irellivent because one of the characters referenced is the Meistro. Russle is gay but hes not trans, and he wrote a nonbinary fem presenting pixie demon who is devious and predatory, something fem presenting trans people are constantly perceived as. Ignoring that, if he wrote an episode where all the gay characters died (burry your gays trope) it doesn't matter if russle himself is gay. Its still a bad trope. Again there's no malice behind these characters anymore than there was malice behind davros, but its a trope he has made frequent use of which is why I pointed it out.
@@thatDamnAusWhoFan Gotcha, I was mostly thinking of Maestro hitting the same note (no pun intended) as they toymaker, which is the other example that you used. As both characters are utilize a lot of camp in their episodes, I mostly thought that both were generally not problematic, but now I definitely understand what you were saying. The way I was thinking is that in terms of queer-coded villains, I feel like there's a certain vibe that comes off when a cishet writer uses the trope compared to a queer writer. Like RTD's master (while I think he's supposed to represent bigotry with his comments about the doctors companions filling "demographics") has some queer-coded/effeminate traits which in my opinion as a gay man, comes off as having fun with these traits compared to something a cishet writer may make which can come off as more disgusted at these traits. Sorry for rambling and thank you for responding!
Yeah I deffinitely see where you're coming from. I don't see anything wrong with playing with queerness in villains its just who's doing it and how you do it. I'm bisexual, captain jack falls into some negative tropes for bisexuals (bring overtly sexual, hitting on anyone and everyone, seemingly incapable of monogamy) but he was also ground breaking. There wasn't any bi representation like that at the time and his overt bisexuality was never portrayed in a bad light or even as something out of the ordinary
Only really brought it up because Russle made a huge thing out of how the evil cripple trope is bad and theu need to change davros, when seemingly no disabled person agrees with him, he is guilty of it multiple times, and he makes frequent use of a trope that can be just as bad
There were parts that I liked. The part where the doctor got stuck in that hotel for a year and made a friend was quite good I thought but it needed its own episode. The time travel hotel was also quite good as a concept, as was the idea of a weapons manufacturer making a star and not caring how much collateral they cause in the process. The covid grief was also a nice touch. There's good stuff in there. The problem was it felt like 3 episode ideas poorly stitched into one, with a fairytale ending where that lady somehow becomes the star and so does her mum, and theyre also the star of Bethlehem, which is its own problem. Its insulting to Christians because it inserts scifi bullshit into their faith, and Its alienating to atheists ans people of other religions
Originally I was doing a top 5 video. Husbands of river song was going to go on it but when I rewatched it I enjoyed the hell out of it so I had to make it 4.
@selatidos Husbands is beautiful man. I guess if you're not invested into River you won't like it, but I am and seeing everything come full circle is priceless.

Putting Voyage of the Damned on here is outrageous
I make no apologies. It's a bad episode with a bad premise that made me hate the doctor
this years christmas special was so bad it made me angry

Return of the King!
This was definitely a video with opinions
Don't list videos usually have opinions?
Why you didn't put husbands of river song in all this
because the husbands of river song is goated
