Climbing Olympic National Park: Deception Basin and Mt. Mystery
This was a climbing trip to Mt. Mystery, the 4th highest peak in the Olympic Range, between the June 8-9, 2024. We approached from the Royal Creek drainage and spent one night in Deception Basin. We made our final push for the summit via the east ridge. Mystery is a beautiful peak and we really enjoyed our short amount of time in this corner of the Park. It is a peak that lives up to its name in more ways than one. Enjoy.

Climbing Olympic National Park: Return to Avalanche Canyon and Inner Constance Peak
มุมมอง 477หลายเดือนก่อน
This was a weekend climbing trip to Avalanche Canyon and Inner Constance Peak (7,670 ft). The Constance Massif towers over the Dosewallips River drainage and Hood Canal region of the Olympic Mountains. Situated on the eastern margins of the range, the Constance Massif is a collection of spires and peaks that holds some of the highest points in the range (3rd and 5th highest). Mt. Constance is o...

Mt. Rainier National Park offers a ton of climbing opportunities in small packages. Besides the massive main peak of the park, there are a lot of smaller sub-ranges that provide great settings to sharpen all skill levels before moving onto bigger and more remote mountains. The first Wood Duck I have ever harvested on the farm. Out of character for the old woody to stick around so long. Thanks for presenting this climb is more detail and with more narration that most such videos. You brought back memories. If you think going up that Lake Constance trail in the daytime it tough, try going down it at night. When I and a friend climbed Mt. Constance, we had to return down that trail in the dark and after our only flashlight died. We could only stumble along as best we could keeping the sound of the creek on our left.

Thank You for watching and so glad this video jolted memories of past climbs. Your experience coming down from Constance sounds like a tough outing for sure. On our approach, we made stop before it got too dark to avoid a situation just like that. There is a lot that comes in the package of climbing an Olympic Peak. I guess that is why people like you and I love it so much. Take care.

      @aaronfulwider779 หลายเดือนก่อน

It definitely was a sweet outing. The sling was around a rock that was wedged as a cockscomb. It is near the top of the 2nd snow chute. It could be used but it was really tight standing in that narrow snow finger in the rock. It could be a place to clip the rope in as a point of protection before ascending further rather than a belay stance. (This just dawned on me while responding to you.). Jackass. You should be on the uphill side of the gully when climbing, then you could get some rock pro. The likelihood of falling is low... But getting hit by a rock as you mentioned is high. Your prioritizing of hazards, sucks. Aka risk management.

I also like the southeast which includes the Duckabush and Dosewallips Rivers, Anderson Pass, O'Niel Pass, Hart and Lacrosse lakes, First Divide, and the Skokomish River valley. Then of course there is also the North Fork Quinault drainage with the Three Prune, Kimta Peak, Lake Beauty Traverse to Low Divide. DSV, I'm looking for some boot advice for summer trips of Baker and Shuksan. I'd rather not use my heavy and stiff ice climbing boots and want to go lighter. But how light is the question. Light and more comfortable with no insulation or heavier and stiffer with insulation. My feet tend to run a lil cold but the comfort of the La Sportiva Aequilibrium LT GTX is hard to ignore from my living room at least. thx

    • @aaronfulwider779

During the summer it is quite warm on the glaciers on those mountains. With boots I believe it is a very important choice because comfort is at stake. Light and more comfortable might be the best so long as they are water proof. You can always add insulation with your socks. Sarah went light and comfortable and loves it.

Thank you for sharing. WOW, I should have watch this 1st. We just hiked this on March 17/2024. Took off at 1:15 AM and made it to the crater rim at 8:15 am. For me hiking in the dark was very HARD to a point that I thought the is something wrong with my heart but it was not. The moment the sunlight started to come out all that pressure on my chest went away. Was this only in my head or this hiking in the dark is not for me. Same thing it happened last year in August on Mt. Adams and I turned back at 9200 ft.

There is nothing in the world in that moment but you and that snow slope, everything else does not matter. Or just set out a little later. Break free of the trees as the sun is rising. As long as it is still cool, there is that safe window till noon to climbing safely on snow. Take care.

Yes, a touch of realism goes a long way if Widgeon are in the area, which they were. I always try to match the different species in an area with decoys and calls to match. If more than one person is in the blind, one can always be on the widgeon whistle.

Hey man. This video is inspiring me to go. I did the Foss River high route loop last year, this sounds like my next big trip. But new to glacier travel. If me and a few keen buddies pooled some cash together to compensate ya, wonder if you might like teaching some basic glacier skills, as seen in this vid? We're in Seattle

Just when I thought a TH-cam climbing/hiking film couldn't get any better. This just might be the gold standard for TH-cam films. Also, thanks for talking about your experience without any lame musical content.

Thank You. So much inspiration went into this trip that I wanted to do the traverse what justice I could with my camera. Glad you enjoyed watching as much as I enjoyed creating. Take care.

The East Side of the Olympic National Park is not a rain forest. Still mossy, but the dryer side.

I've seen numerous videos on the Ptarmigan Traverse you really took your time and provided the love of detail that makes this one I think the best video on it. Well done

Thank You. I just wanted to do a good job capturing this one. It is always on my mind that I might not get a second chance to return to these places in the future and this could be the one shot I get. I love the Glacier Peak Wilderness and wanted to portray that love and respect through this production. Take care and happy ventures!

Cherokee Sports when they existed. Last I heard they went out of business. I need to check up again. One of the best decoys I have ever used they just break super easy.

@aaronfulwider779 I found them on ebay. Have you ever hunted fields?

Great that you found some. I never get any chances to hunt straight fields with no water.

Great video and narration as always 👊🏼 what brand of jerk string is the one you emphasized at the wildlife refuge? I like that a lot better than the typical straight lines of decoys

I will find out for you. My buddy Ryan brought it. It has 4 clips and a central elastic cord that attaches to a large weight. He combined two of. them.

An old sage once told me that Sasquatch has teleportation properties. They can blend in and disappear very well! There are also recorded sightings of an "Ape Man" along the Carbon River and Ipsuit Creek.

@@aaronfulwider779 yes, I have spent some time with elderly natives, and they too have mentioned similar stories. Like yourself, I too have spent time, deep in those woods, all the way down to the NorCal border. Those woods are mystical, and the energies in those areas are uniquely powerful.
