  • Hard to believe it but most of the Northwest's landscapes are composed of sage brush deserts, arid lava flows, and dried up water channels called coulees. Late winter and early spring are great times to go exploring in coulee country because it is not scotching hot, the ticks are not out yet, and there is a short bloom of wildflowers and green grass before desert climates take over in the summer. This was a single day trip in early March through Quincy Wildlife Area, which is located in Grant County's Columbia Basin. It is a great area to see the layers of Columbia River Flood Basalts and walk the path of ice age cataclysmic floods. I hope you enjoy it just as much as we did.

Great video! Love the geology of the area. I live in Eastern Washington and see the effects of the big floods all over the east side. Crazy the power of the floods. Thanks for sharing. Hike on!

The floods define eastern Washington and really give it a signature trade mark. Been interested ever since my parents took me to Ginko Petrified forest when I was a kid. The video of the Bretz Floods, Cataclysms of the Columbia, that they used to show in the visitor center stirred the imagination. It is out dated today but still holds its charm.

Somehow I stumbled onto your video I loved every minute of it. I appreciated your geologic insight into the scenery. I was especially impressed that you read the geologic history in what you were seeing as evidenced in your half pothole observation. As a lifelong amateur geologist I have always read the geologic history but I've never met anyone else who did the same. Nicely filmed and edited. Thanks for taking us along.

Thank You. Glad you liked it. I love reading from the professionals and then going to find examples in the field. Enhances my amateur knowledge of geology for sure and a great motivator to go hiking.

Such a great area. After a winter of snow shoeing, it's a great escape to get some dirt miles in while waiting for the snow to melt out in the foothills. Was there that same day, March 11. I usually do that loop in reverse from the path you took. You always have great geologic insight in your videos. Strange, I wondered what you'd have to say about that area. Figured I'd probably run into you some day on the trail and almost did! ha!

That is so crazy! You were out there that very day. When you put positivity out there in the universe it returns to you in some form. We were that close. Yes, I love the stories behind the scenery for sure. Seeing the field evidence of these great geologic events first hand is like going to your favorite music show live, there is nothing like it. What I liked about this spot is the surrounding farm land is so flat that you do not even realize that something that dramatic is waiting right out of sight over the horizon. A hidden gem. Hope to catch you on the trail some day in the future. Take care.

You already know what I am thinking. This would be a hard place to access and you would need a good dog.
