60 Second Tip: Finding the Right Height When Photographing Wildlife
Finding the best angle to photograph wildlife is not just about moving from side to side. You also need to think about the best height. Standard advice is to shoot the animal at their eye level but this is not always the best angle. In this quick tip, I discuss how I decided the best height to photograph quail.
Hope you enjoy!

60 Second Photo Tip: Finding the Best Shutter Speed for Waterfalls
มุมมอง 5162 ปีที่แล้ว
One of the most common questions I get from students is what's the best shutter speed for photographing waterfalls. The best answer is "it depends" but this is not very helpful. There's a technical answer to do with speed of water flow, relative size of the waterfall in the frame, etc. but, equally important is the effect you're looking for. Here's how typically choose the shutter speed that su...

Just bought a G9 after doing much research. Thank you for your informative review. It really helped me make the right decision 😊
@@CatherineReynolds-qg1fo Hope you the camera
@ should arrive in 3 days. I wanted something that had the functionality and responsiveness of a dslr having had years using a Canon 7D. I loved it but with advancing years the weight of it became untenable. I’m selling on a LUMIX GF-1 and happy to go with the G9🤗
Splendid review of the Lumix G9 camera without confusing technical jargon. Very informative. Many thanks. Best wishes for 2025.
@@jackorchel332 Thanks, much appreciated 👍
i also traded my pentax K30 for the Lumix Gx8, awesome camera!
I switched largely because of weight. after useing it for a month, I have learned that, without the battery grip, the battery life is about 2 hours. Even with the battery grip, I am buying extra batteries for a month in Budapest
That’s the main downside of mirrorless cameras. They are heavy users of battery power. Batteries will last much longer if you restrict the use of the rear LCD screen and set the auto sleep to a short period of time.
@@IanSmissenPhotography . Two possible downsides: They have way too many auto functions that can's turn off or don't even know are running It gives you a long, steep learning curve if you are moving, like me from 20 years of Caon use to a completely foreign system
@@susanorourke6868 yes but that would be true for any new system
Looking at the GX8 today, would you still buy it?
Yes!
@@IanSmissenPhotography thank you! Really enjoyed the video, used to live in Brisbane and other half spent most of her time in Melbourne with work, so got to visit a lot and loved the place, great to see the walkabout and pics. Going to get the GX8! Thanks
I see many complaints on Amazon the KF is difficult to unscrew off😮.
The dynamic range of the G9 is actually pretty good as you have demonstrated. It is as good as my 5DIII.
How are you going with the G9? Tempted by the G9II?
@@Democratiser bought the G9II a few months ago and love it!
@@IanSmissenPhotography Well done! I have the G9 and think it is great but the G9II (which I would like to get one day… or a GX series body with similar functionality) seems to have closed the gap on full frame quite a lot in terms of noise and colour shift at higher ISOs. It also seems to have a bit more vibrance and luminance - I can’t really put my finger in it but I find I prefer the G9II images over G9 consistently. Interestingly, apart from bokeh and high ISO (neither of which are often meaningful differentiators) I don’t find S5II consistently more appealing. I’m assume the PDAF is helpful with your wildlife shots?
@@Democratiser yes, the focussing is significantly improved
New to your channel and I really enjoyed this video. It was very timely for me as a few months ago I purchased a GX8 and already owned the Panasonic 25mm 1.7 for use on my Olympus cameras. In addition, a few years back I inherited a Pentax K1000 with the 50 mm 1.7 lens. Just yesterday I put the 25 mm lens on the GX8 and film with a new battery in the K1000. Planed on something very similar to you video. I am so glad I came across it because I would have never considered shooting in B&W with the GX8. Your photos really inspired me and I can't wait to give it a try. I have been using the GX8 primarily for a macro camera; but, it felt like I had barely scratched the surface of its capability.
a mountain kit for landscapes and a bit of flora and fauna, do you recommend a g9 with 14-140 or a Pentax kf with 18-135?
@@frankiefalci8735 Either should work well. I haven’t used the Pentax KF or the Panasonic 14-140 so can’t compare based on first hand experience. If you want something even lighter for hiking, check out the Panasonic GX9, it seems to get good reviews.
@@IanSmissenPhotography Thx but there Is not waterproof
@@frankiefalci8735 correct 👍
Enjoyed this video! Are you still using the G9 as your main body?
@@macmij Hi, I have upgraded to the G9 mk2
@@IanSmissenPhotography thanks for the quick reply. It would be terrific to see a short segment on your thoughts of the G9 vs G9 mk2 at some point. Cheers!
great vid!
I particularly enjoyed the lighting discussion because others want us to believe the sun moves at their command! We’re fishermen of a sort, are we not?
I have karris, marris and yarris to look at.
Great review! I have both the Pentax KP and the K1. I’m renting the G9 along with the OM-1 right now. The G9 wins for the menu system. The OM menu system is so complicated! I plan to keep the K1 for now but will probably sell the KP and lenses for one of these two m4/3 cameras. I recently bought a used GX8 that I converted to IR. I love the flip up EVF. I wish Panasonic would make a new version of that. I’d be all in! Will be following you for these great videos.
Thank you so much, my friend. This is one of the most inspiring for me to understand how the camera work in the situation that I would like to do. I just bought S5ii last month but still I need some MFT camera to replace my old G100. The new G9ii is a little bit expensive to be just my second camera so I decide to buy this old G9 instead. This video of you is very informative. Thanks again, Ian.
Glad it was helpful!
Hi Ian. Very interesting video. I moved from Fujifilm at the beginning of this year to full frame. I’ve chopped and changed with a couple of brands this year and went for the Pentax K1. It’s an awesome machine but lately, I’ve noticed the weight I’m carrying around. Will I lose much by moving to a G9 other than weight! I have problems with my neck and shoulders so having 1.5kg of camera and lens feels a touch on the heavy side.
Hi John, You'll lose 16MP in image resolution but the G9 does have the ability to shoot 80MP files in hi-res mode on a tripod. Otherwise, almost everything else is same or better on G9.
Really great video Ian. Melbourne still rocks even though I’m a country bumpkin these years. Back to your 36 shot concept, I parked my Pentax some time ago as well when my Tri-X stash ran out, so we’ll done! Wasn’t keeping count but 11:29 nailed for me…
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it
Hi Ian I've just come across this great video. Some terrific and sharp street images and the mono works wonders! Has inspired me to get out more (I'm near London, UK) and make more use of my recently purchased secondhand GX8 which, as a G9 owner, I'm really impressed with. P.S. Your video brought back memories of being in Melbourne some 7 years ago - a lovely city.
Some great photos. A couple of years later and I’ve picked up a secondhand gx8. Previously, I’ve been put off this camera due to reported issues of shutter shock, although it doesn’t seem to affect your images. But, I don’t like the mechanical shutter on this camera though (it seems loud and feels clunky), but I love the format. The electronic shutter is a work around, but you have to be aware of motion/jello shots. Panasonic should update the gx9 with the weather sealing and viewfinder of the gx8. I’d be sold on that immediately.
Outstanding photography again Ian. You make it sound so simple but that's because you know exactly what you're doing. I shall look forward to viewing the remaining videos.
Thanks 🙏 Much appreciated
Simply superb Ian......I really rate your work. I was down in Dorset a couple of weeks ago and like you fell in love with Portland Bill....so natural and unspoiled.
Thanks 🙏 Much appreciated
Thanks for the video!
Hi Ian 🙂 Good to see ya! Any thoughts of picking up a G9 II?
Definitely. Just need to save a few $$ 😀
Me too 😅@@IanSmissenPhotography
A very objective and helpful review - many thanks. I've had my G9 for about four years now and would only consider changing it if Panasonic came out with an improved G9 mkll. It's a tremendous camera for the money, and the range of lightweight, high quality mft lenses now available will make me stick with my G9 for the foreseeable future.
I am going the same route at the moment. I've used Pentax gear since the ME Super in 1982 and my latest kit comprised 2 x K-3 IIs, a 16-85mm DC, 200mm SDM and a 55-300mm PLM lens plus a couple of Sigma lenses and flashguns. I've got 4 planned 'shoots' between mid-August and the back end of October but for those all I'll need is a K-3 II, 16-85mm Sigma 10-20mm and the Sigma EF-610 DG Super flashgun. As a result, all my other stuff has acquired me a decent account with a (fairly) local Panasonic dealer in readiness to pre-order the G9 Mk 2 later this year!
Excellent....you have just convinced me to get one.
Tq for the walk around... Very nice black and white set
Fantastic idea for a shoot with this camera and lens. It gave me a view of Melbourne as well.
Thanks Chris, glad you enjoyed it.
Again..
Definitely a great choice! I switched to Lumix from Canon. I had the 1dx mark ii and the 5d mark iii. At some point I started thinking not about what I wanted to shoot and how I would enjoy it, but how hard it was to carry it all around. Right now I'm shooting with the G9 paired with the GH5s. I chose the GH5s specifically for video. But because of its great high ISO performance, I sometimes take photos with it in the dark as well.
One of my cameras is an OM-D E-M1x. I saw the two side by side in the camera store, it's not a lot smaller than the 1Dx II. It might be a better camera, certainly it has some advantages beyond lack of weight.
Hey mate, just an interesting tip - the D Vario Elmarit 14-50mm from the 43rds system with an adapter is amazing!
Just moved up from a gx9 to thd g9, I'd been doing wild life photography with out all these features😂😂
Hope you enjoy the new camera 🙂
Once the sun sets, people think, well that's it. They don't think that the sun will now reflect against the clouds & bring out the colors & lighting that you don't get whilst the sun is still up
Great review: relaxed, clear, personalised. Thanks!
it's 5 years old and still is an amazing camera.
Agree!
Great idea. Many thanks for the inspiration.
Wow, just came across your video - we're planning our trip to Australia this year and Ebird shows that location as the hottest hotspot in Victoria - definitely on our itinerary. Thanks for this and I have the Leica 100-400mm on a G95. It has been excellent thus far and I can concur with everything you said about this fantastic piece of glass. Lots of outdoor usage can make one adept at working around the very few shortcomings of this lens.

Thanks so much for this information.... Hadn't done my research yet, this is very kind of you.
Pentax is a traditional camera , they don't have to proof anything.
is it possible to still use a CPL filter on the lens? or only the ND filters in the system?
If your CPL filter has a filter thread you could mount the CPL on the lens and then mount the filter holder to the CPL filter.
Thank you for sharing your tutorial, I have just purchased the Panasonic fz82 zoom camera. I have seen some views in TH-cam they seem very good with this model. Or am I being missled maybe they are using a camera with higher zoom, maybe you can reassure me on this dilemma. The moon is not in our sky at the moment. Hope I can get some reasonable shots. To be truthful I did not get it for this purpose, I bought it to take photographs of my daughters up and coming wedding in March. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge.
Hi Michael Thanks for the feedback. Glad it was useful. 😀
@@IanSmissenPhotography thank you for your reply
Great review Ian, many thanks.
Thank you. This is what I wanted to hear. I bleed Pentax but want something lighter with faster autofocus. I have tried the Fujifilm X-T4 and it's just not doing it for me.
I was a huge Pentax fan from the film days, bought an APSC-C Pentax DSLR. For my daughter, I purchased a Panasonic GF-6, a beginner camera. But I was blown away by much better software, superior movie capability, fold-out touch screen (!), by much lighter weight. Later; I bought myself a Panasonic GF8 with 4K video capability; a few weeks ago, a pristine 2nd hand Panasonic GX8. The smaller form factor and lighter weight of cameras and lenses of M43 are fun; the system is very capable, reliable, and highly developed! M43 is the reason why the main manufacturers ditched the DSLR in favor of mirrorless cameras. Pentax offered the stand-alone Q series which they ditched after a few years. If they had joined the M43 consortium, maybe the Q series would still be alive.
Gracias por el paseo 😌
:)
:)
Just came across your channel and this video. I bought into the MFT system the first year it was available. Started out with Olympus then migrated to Lumix starting with the gx1 all the way to the gx8 today. I have a second gx8 body and an all Leica lens lineup, 5 in total. I wouldn’t trade this camera for anything. It is the most comfortable camera I’ve used in many years. It does everything it need. This is probably the first time in my 50 years of photography that I had been looking to “upgrade” for some reason or another. I’m sure you’ll enjoy yours. Keep up the quality content 👍
Awesome demo! To the point from the get go. No bullshit.
