Hello “Grand Dad” a bit late but congrats and lots of luck with you new (and of course older) grand children…. Good to see you back👍
I just purchased the Leica 100-400 to my new G9 ( Already owned a G9 but it was stolen on a Mountain Trip here in the Austrian Alps 🇦🇹last year😡)
The Leica is my first long Tele and I do not have any experience with birding Wildlife and Long lenses…
So some Tips for Amatuer Wildlife newbies with Tremorous hands would be nice…
(by the way love the GX8 Idea the GX was my first m43 less advanced than the G9 but hell do I love that camera 📸♥️)
All the best to you knee you family and your photography and best regards from a Dutchman the Austrian Alps 👍

Good to see, and hear, you back. Looking forward to the Great Ocean Road trip; my wife and I hope to visit Victoria next year to see around Bright, the silo art trails and the Great Ocean Road. I've got a G9 and have hired a 12-60mm Leica plus the 100-300mm Lumix; the former so I can do wide angle landscapes and the latter for wildlife photography and video. Hoping you can give details of your settings and post workflows. Keep on breathing,
    Mike in Oz

Thanks Mike. I am hoping to get to Bright after Easter for the autumn colour. I'll add some processing sessions. Cheers, Ian

Great to see you again Ian, I enjoy your videos and the way you explain how and why you shoot subjects. Being a NSWelshman, I'm kind of attracted to what Victoria has to offer and for a small state, it's so diverse. In fact, I'm seriously thinking of moving down to Victoria within the next 2 years when I decide to semi-retire. I think for an empty nester Couple, Victoria may suit our lifestyle more than NSW. (except for unpredictable Pollies). My hobbies quite diverse too, Bicycle Touring, Photography, metal detecting and Low n slow BBQ. Just need to find time for all of them. The places I can suggest to cover is places like Maryborough, it has a marvellous old Railways station that I beleive had recently had been renovated. Cover some History which Victoria has in abundance, maybe cover some of the rail trails in central Victoria. Oh and the Grampians. Looking forward to seeing your next work mate...hope you're doing ok. Congrats on your new Grand Child. Cheers Dave J.

Thanks David, I've been thinking of a series on historic towns of Victoria so you've prompted me to put this higher on the to do list. And the Grampians has been a frequent request too. Cheers, Ian

I would like to see more of your work with bird and wildlife photography. Plus I would be interested in learning more about how you capture videos when capturing images on the same camera. Specifically, what video settings do you use. Thanks for asking Ian.

      Hi Bob
Thanks for watching. I hope you're safe and well.
Will try to get more wildlife into the plans. Quick answer to the dual shooting - stills and video - is that I have my G9 set up with 4K 60fps as default video setting for use with the red video button on top of the camera so I can jump back and forward between stills and video just using the two different 'shutter' buttons. The Movie setting I have set to 180 fps so if I need that I just switch to Movie. I'll do a video explaining these settings in more detail.
      Cheers, Ian

Great video work Ian. In 2021 I would like you to continue doing great videos about the wildlife you encounter and the locations you find them. Inspiration/motivation to get outdoors is a passion for me. Would teaching a workshop for 4K wildlife Videography be in your future? Photography is limited to one picture regardless if it's a multishot multi row panorama. Once you get really good at it, it's takes a lot more effort to improve. However, Wildlife Videography is a never ending challenge, with unlimited creative opportunites. Unlike film/cinematic filming, digital video for wildlife requires a different set of recording skills & techniques to create various styles.
In the near future, it's likely there'll be more photographers wanting to learn digital video techniques for wildlife. Right now, there's not much online content on new ways to shoot 4K video. And the marketing push is for people to do 2 min cimematic marketing clips for camera gear. And, most of the popular wildlife videos online are the repititious 4K relaxation videos played in a loop, or people getting outdoors focused on market camera gear. I've got nothing against these, and that's shat's popular. But I do wish more people would shoot Wildlife Videos about the Wildlife. Or create videos on wildlife videography showing their digital mirrorless tricks skills and techniques. At any rate, I look forward to more of your videos.

Thanks. As we are getting out of lockdowns I am hoping to get back out and do more videos. While not an expert on video, I’ll think about how I can include more on wildlife video. Cheers Ian

Glad you're back. I've been interested in the G9 and 100-400mm lens for some time. Hoping to buy into the system this year and would be interested in your likes and dislikes of the system, technical tips, etc. I'm just a casual wildlife photographer enjoying the challenge of photographing birds on my photo walks here on the U.S. gulf coast. Currently I'm using a Lumix FZ1000.

      Hi Bruce,
Thanks for watching and your interest. I have a review of the G9 done about a year ago after using it for 15 months: th-cam.com/video/iuMd1779Z6Y/w-d-xo.html
If you have any more questions or ideas for videos, let me know.
      Cheers, Ian

Nice review. It's amazing how many tips you can learn along the way. For example: I have the Leica 114 version of the FZ1000. Its 25-400mm lens make it a great travel camera and the I-Zoom feature gets you out to 800mm's digitally in a pinch with mostly excellent results but the camera's autofocus struggles a bit near infinity and you can't shoot RAW and use I-Zoom. There's also the quick focus feature which makes it more wildlife capable but you can't zoom and shoot at the same time, have to zoom, shoot, zoom shoot, etc. I think of the G9 as the professional version of the FZ1000 that offers sophistication without the weight and the weighty price tag of larger sensor cameras. I look forward to your journey with the G9 and more of the excellent results I've seen already.

Wow. Just in time. This posted literally two minute after I needed to ask you a question about sound recording.
Knee injuries suck! I took a fall few years ago and tore up my hamstring directly behind my knee, simultaneously aggravated an old meniscus tear, and learned in the process with an MRI it also aggravated my osteoarthritis which I did not even know I had. It was like that song Tears on My Pillow, but it was pain on my knee not in my heart causing the excruciation. LOL. (Its funny now, but wasn't then).
Ok. My question, please. Today I was recommended the stereo Sennheiser MKE 440 mic for birding videography to grab bird songs. Do you have or would you do a comparison video on your channel for different mics (under $500) for nature photography?
What do you think about the Sennheiser MKE 440, if you ever tried one, and can you recommend any others?
Thank you Ian! Glad to see you are up and around!

      Hi JettySplash
Thanks for watching. First, I hope you've recovered from your knee injury - mine took 6 months to get back to normal (which wasn't great anyway). Second, I am not an audio expert and have not tried the Sennheiser mic - I would love to be able to afford it as I have heard great things about it...one day maybe.
      Cheers, Ian

Hi. What type of tripod is that please. It that wind affecting it?
    Thank you!

    • @IanSmissenPhotography
      @IanSmissenPhotography  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The tripod is an Algonquin from Jobu Design (a Canadian company). It is very solid but NOT cheap. I think the RRP is about $US849 not including the head. There are two things that will make a lighter tripod more sturdy in the wind:
      1. spikes - some tripods have interchangeable feet where you can put spikes on them and jam the spikes into the ground,
      2. extra weight - tie a thin rope to the hook on the centre column (assuming your tripod has one) and the other end to something heavy (e.g. camera bag) sitting on the ground (don't have it swinging in the air) OR a 'stone bag' such as this one: (which I have) www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/707201-REG/Vanguard_SB_100_SB_100_Stone_Bag.html (this is also useful for holding bits and pieces, e.g. filters, while you need your hands free).
I hope that helps. Cheers, Ian
