How to Photograph the Moon | A Quick Guide

  • Last night was a "Supermoon": a full moon with the moon at it's closest point to the Earth this year. I took a few shots and posted them on other social media sites and got a few questions about how I shoot the moon at night. Hence this video.
Shooting the moon does not require a lot of equipment - a camera and telephoto lens are really all you need. A tripod and remote shutter release are useful but not necessary if you can stabilise your camera in other ways. You really just need to learn how to expose and focus manually our at least understand what your automatic settings are doing and adjust them accordingly.
    Hope you enjoy.

Gary Gough has also done a great blog on shooting the Moon in the UK but it's upside down there.

Thank you for sharing your tutorial, I have just purchased the Panasonic fz82 zoom camera. I have seen some views in TH-cam they seem very good with this model. Or am I being missled maybe they are using a camera with higher zoom, maybe you can reassure me on this dilemma. The moon is not in our sky at the moment. Hope I can get some reasonable shots. To be truthful I did not get it for this purpose, I bought it to take photographs of my daughters up and coming wedding in March. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge.

Thanks Ian, nice tips. Ocean Grove is a nice neck of the woods. BTW do you ever get any southern aurora shots shooting directly south? Stay safe.

Thanks Ian for a step by step process, especially with the G9. In the 'Focus' step you mention 'set your lens to infinity'; how do you do this? Thanks for continuing doing the vlogs especially during these self isolation times; it makes looking forward to 'the mail' more relevant. Keep on keeping on.
