Scripto Erasable Pen Review
มุมมอง 473วันที่ผ่านมา
Here's a pen that I haven't seen in a number of years. This was included in a bundle of pencils that I picked up at a sale recently. This Scripto Erasable pen has black ink, a medium point, and was made in Mexico. I wasn't sure if it would still write, or if the ink would still erase, but I gave it a try. #asmr #ballpoint #ballpoint #penreview #analog

It's back to school season so there are a lot of good deals of pens and other supplies out now if you want to review. TH-cam won't let me post links but the Pen + Gear ballpoint pens that are the US version of the Cello Trimate pens are on sale for 94 cents for 12 pens (but they only come in black). Then there's the dozen pack of Tru Red ballpoint pens at Staples (come in blue, black and red) for a little over $3, plus free shipping (my local Staples closed so I bought them online, they've had free shipping with no minimum since the pandemic.) Also the Pen and Gear 2-pack of gel pens for 88 cents (not a sale, they're always that cheap but they're a little too inky for me - they should come in a fine point).

I am a big fan of Mitsubishi pencils. Japanese pencils, in general, seem to be very high quality. Even the mechanical leads from Pentel have a certain characteristic that is difficult to describe.

    • @DinnerForkTongue
      @DinnerForkTongue 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

That's because Japanese lead (and Asian lead in general nowadays) is extremely low friction relative to its hardness level. They can be light, they can be dark, but they're never rough or gritty, because the lead doesn't bite into the paper at all. Kevin has described them before as "velvety" and "buttery", but yeah, it's because of the low friction. I'm just speculating here, but I'd wager this is a result of traditional Japanese writing being done with a brush instead of a quill, or a stylus on wax tablet, like in ancient European traditions. The writing system, accordingly, incorporates all sorts of dynamic pressure spots and sweeping strokes that you don't see in Western calligraphy, and you can't perform those with a high friction instrument.

Fun fact: "Mitsubishi" is a rough romanization of exactly what the company's logo depicts - three rhombuses (diamond shapes), that is. "Mittsu" means "three (small objects, counted)" and "hishi" means "rhombus", which becomes "bishi" when the two are fused together.

While that has caused a hit to my wallet, it has certainly been cheaper than when I was collecting fountain pens and ink 😂! I must say that without your reviews, I wouldn't have discovered the joys of Mitsu-Bishi and Musgrave pencils. The Musgrave Harvest Pro has become my favorite writing pencil, along with the Mitsu-Bishi 9800. I don't have the 9852, but I do have the 9850. It says it's "for Office Use." Oh god, this pen is awful. Clear case of trying to do two diametrically opposite jobs and failing at both. Pencil graphite erases because the pigment is deposited on top of the paper. It doesn't combine on the molecular level with the cellulose like pen ink, which infiltrates the fibers and attaches to them on such a scale that you can't detach them through mechanical means. It HAS to be a chemical solution. Even then, what's the point? Pens are used for permanence already, going against that principle invalidates their very nature. Don't try to re-invent the wheel, stationery brands. That money and effort is much better spent elsewhere.

    • @AlwaysAnalog

This is so interesting. I live in the Philippines and the erasable pen that’s famous here is the Pilot Frixion pens. I thought Pilot Frixion was the first erasable pen until this video. The ink in the Frixions are smoother as they are more akin to Gel Pens than oil based ball points. The way it works is that heat makes the ink translucent. So when you rub it enough, the heat wall “erase” the ink. It doesn’t really erase the ink because when you cool it back like put your writing in the refrigerator, the ink comes back. As a kid, my mind was blown by this technology, and this was used in essay-type exams when teachers prohibited pencils and erasures.

    • @AlwaysAnalog

Hi Ronciego - I have tried a Frixion pen (I think I reviewed it here) and it is a fascinating technology. These other erasable pens use a formulation of ink that is supposed to be erasable but isn't really, and in turn do a bad job writing. Thanks!

Semi-retired audio-electronics repair tech here; my decades-long usage of erasers isn't as an accessory to drawing or writing, but instead for cleaning and polishing electrical and electronic contacts on switches and relays, and cleaning oxidized terminals and chassis before soldering to them. Modern white plastic/vinyl erasers are ineffective for this; the erasers we use need to have some abrasive grit ---- silica, sand, pumice, fiberglas etc ---- imbedded in the eraser material. Old-school pencil-type erasers with the blue nylon brush on the other end (Faber-Castell, Staedtler, Sanford etc) are ideal for shaping into a chisel like point with a razor knife to get into tight areas to clean contacts, but the original ones were apparently made with natural latex rubber and have a tendency to dry up and crumble even though they're encased in a wood handle; and all the modern wooden-stick erases I've found use the soft white "plastic" eraser material, which is useless. We also frequently used a non-cordless, AC powered, inductive-motor eraser (made by Faber, Ebersoll and others), the type with a hollow center that accepts 1/4" diameter, 6 or 7" long eraser rods, which are fantastic for de-oxidizing metal prior to soldering; but the pink (lightly abrasive) and gray (more abrasive) eraser rods are seemingly no longer being manufactured and vintage new old stock eraser rods often dry up and turn brittle, crumbly and useless with age. Anyway, the AC powered erasers in conjunction with gray eraser rods will even remove the lacquer-like, green "solder-resist" coating from circuit boards. I also frequently use a fiberglass bristle "scratch brush" for cleaning connectors and circuit boards. For some purposes they work even better than the pencil eraser, although you have to take care not to get glass splinters stuck in your fingers (gloves are recommended). I own several small, inexpensive battery-powered erasers and have adapted the nubby/stubby, worn-down, leftover fiberglas brushes that are too short to use in the mechanical scratchbrush so that they'll fit the battery powered erasers, in place of the supplied, useless white plastic erasers. This works extremely well and, surprisingly, the "powered" glass brushes last longer and shed fewer glass fibers compared to when you use them in a manual scratch-brush. I did find miniature abrasive gray "Sun Dolphin" "sand" erasers from Seed, but theyre closer to 4.5 mm while the standard battery-powered erasers are designed for 5 mm erasers. If you have a line on sources for any of the eraser types I detailed above, I'd love to know! [EDIT ---- I filmed and posted a quickie video this morning of my various scratch brushes and powered draftsman's erasers, both battery and AC house current driven. It's on my channel].

Mitsubishi wins because it's still made in Japan.

Hi Kobie - if you want to include place of manufacture in the evaluation, then the Mitsubishi pencils are the ones made in Japan. Thanks!

Some Mitsubishi products are made in Vietnam like Propus highlighters, Pin fineliners, Paint markers etc. They are the same quality.

@@Crazytesseract If there was no negative tradeoff whatsoever then Mitsubishi would’ve moved all production to cheap Vietnam. The reason some are made in Vietnam is because they want to cater to people that don’t mind the quality tradeoff for the price. Which is fine.

This pen is very famous and very popular. In India, before launch of pentonic, people always purchased 5 Indian rupee pens and considered anything above 5rupee as expensive. This pen was 10 rupee. And everyone's perspective changed because it was just so damn good. It might be very inexpensive in us dollars and I believe 8-9 of these pens would cost one dollar but they're a quiet luxury of middle class here in india

Thank you, Vishankha. That's very interesting to know. I heard these are really popular in India, and it's nice to hear it from someone who knows. Thank you!

I have a box of these that my mom had saved from her teaching days a good 50 years ago. The box says they are Ravenwood Pencils made by Reliance Pencil Corporation in Lewisburg, Tenn.

Actually, I see now that they’re a different lot than the ones you show here. They only say BOARD OF EDUCATION - CITY OF NEW YORK on one edge, but they have all the manufacturer info on the flip side. Now you’re making me want to sharpen one and see how it is.

Hi Ron - this is great information! Thank you for sharing it with me. Even if the pencils don't have the exact same imprint, they may have come from the same manufacturer. Thanks!

A proper showcase of quality stationery. God I love Japanese writing supplies. The Tombows both seemed a smidge darker on camera than the Mitsubishis. Including in the HB test.
