  • Attention K-Mart shoppers! I recently found this vintage 7-pack of K-Mart branded pencils at a thrift store. Not sure who made these, but they were made in the USA and are likely from the mid-80's. I crack this package open to sample one of these K-Mart originals.

    You sure know how to get the nostalgia gland fired up, first thing in the morning! I appreciate the historical connection as much as the pencils!
    Until you started writing, and commented on the smooth graphite, I was sure these were going to be revealed as Epcon composite pencils. Glad I was wrong.

      Thanks, MAMO. I'm glad they weren't the Epcon pencils, too. I'm guessing Kmart used a number of vendors for its house brand pencils over the years and probably sold a lot of them! Thanks!

    Hi, Kevin! I love pencils and use them daily. I've always thought the ones made in the USA were better, but maybe not that one. The pencil is such a humble tool, yet a well made pencil is joy to use. Thanks for sharing this find and I hope you're enjoying the final days of winter!!

      Hi Nancy! I agree that the pencil is such a great tool - the possibilities of what one can create with a simple pencil are endless. The sun is out and the snow and ice have all faded away! Hoping for an early spring!

    Kevin, I was just in that store yesterday! I need to start paying more attention when I go out...never know where a Kevin is going to show up! Lol! Also, I laugh every time you say "those of you who are of a certain age...." in your videos...because it never fails, I am always of that certain age! ;) Thanks for another great video! ~ Greg.

      Hi Greg! I passed that thrift store as we retuning from the upper peninsula and these vintage pencils were waiting for me. Yes, those of us of a certain age sure understand who we are! LOL! Thanks!

    I'm a little young to remember blue light specials although I get the reference. Grew up shopping at K-mart. Their stores were great in the early 90's before Walmart really started taking over.

      Hi RBS - it would have been hard to imagine growing up that one day K-Mart stores would all be gone. It was a retail powerhouse. Thanks!

    I saw Kmart, I clicked! The nostalgia of Kmart, and very limited nostalgia of Kresge's in my area was a fun rush through my mind this morning. I don't have any memories the "blue light specials" though, despite that they were active in Canada during my childhood, according to Google.
    I'm wondering if these pencils are from the 90s? The paper-like ribbon of the pencil shaving was something I started seeing around that time. Myself and my classmates preferred pencils that sharpened in this manner at that time.
    Update on my eraser journey- I did go through all of the supplies I have at home. My current favorite is by Staedtler. The eraser is white with a green center, and it has a green sleeve. This was the only one that performed appropriately when I had to make corrections to erase small sections of penciled lettering and animal drawings from a painted wood surface last month.
    Thanks for the upload Kevin!
    Fawn 😊

      Hi Fawn! Glad that Kmart brought back some memories! It was an amazing store - hard to believe they are all gone now. I'm glad you found an eraser that works well for you! My experience with Staedtler erasers has been pretty positive! Thanks!

      Thanks, ebodaman! I guess we are sometimes there at the right times. More often I don't see any pencils when I go to the thrift stores - but I always check!

    I have a weird question haha. If you were asked to write by hand the first draft of a 500 word essay in one sitting, what particular pencil or pen would you use? I personally use pencils in my first draft. As much as I love the Philippine manufactured Mongol yellow #2 pencils, I would probably use a 2b Tombow MONO. Not sure why but Tombows feel thicker than other pencils and they're relatively more comfortable to grip and they write smoothly...Awesome Video as always!

      You could definitely do much much worse than the good old Mono, that's a great brand.
      Me personally, I'd use a Pentel GraphGear 500 0.9. Grip friendliness and thick graphite means I can speedwrite with a ton of comfort.

      Hi ronciego - I always use pencil when writing a draft of anything. If I knew I was going to be writing 500 or more words, chances are I would grab two or three sharpened pencils, and they may not all be the same. A Tombow Mono in 2B would certainly be a great choice! I might have a Mitsubishi, Kitaboshi and a Musgrave (I love the Tennessee Round and Pencil King). Thanks!

    I would guess that those are from 1987-1990. 1987 is when Kmart began using barcodes, and 1990 is when the logo changed to remove the teal blue.

    Thats an odd nummer of pencils. Not 4, 10 or 12, but SEVEN.

    • @AlwaysAnalog
      @AlwaysAnalog  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi oomen - it is strange to see a set of seven pencils. I could see five, six or eight, but seven is a strange number. I'm sure it had something to do with cost vs price point. Thanks!

    • @DinnerForkTongue
      @DinnerForkTongue 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      My best guess is 7 is the number that fit best in the box size they already had beforehand. Being hexagonal, pencils like this stack in alternating rows, so makes sense for there to be an odd number.

    Quick research about SS Kresge name change was 1977; however, I distinctly remember K-Mart in Pensacola in late 60s. Given the horrible erasability, would the age of the core contribute to this? I vote no. Could the core be a composite? And finally, why don't these companies take advantage of advertising their logos on the pencils? I never see Walmart or K- Mart on pencils or pens. Good review. Thank you for sharing your time and information w/us. God bless.

    • @AlwaysAnalog
      @AlwaysAnalog  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi Sallie - thanks for sharing your research! Usually, an old pencil if formulated well, will still erase regardless of its age. I'm guessing it's the ingredients of these cores that caused them to erase so terribly. Funny how they didn't put their name or logo on these pencils. Maybe they knew they weren't that great! LOL! Thanks, Sallie!

    So as of today (03/19/2024), what is your favorite writing pencil? Thank you

    • @AlwaysAnalog
      @AlwaysAnalog  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Stormshadow - there are a number of pencils that I really enjoy using, but I don't know if there is one in particular. Depends on the paper I'm using and the nature of what I'm writing. Almost any pencil from Mitsubishi, Kitaboshi, Musgrave or Tombow would be a favorite of mine. Thanks!

  • @DinnerForkTongue
    @DinnerForkTongue 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Wow, easily the worst erasability I've ever seen on this channel. This pencil writes more like a pen than anything graphite-based. I'm wondering if the bonding agent used in the lead core has anything to do with it, and if it includes any oily or waxy substances that would ingrain into the paper to leave so much shine.

    • @AlwaysAnalog
      @AlwaysAnalog  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi DFT - these are not very erasable pencils, for sure. Whatever is mixed into the core of these pencils really makes it difficult to lift off the paper. Thanks!
