Pink Pearl Eraser Review: Made in Malaysia vs Made In China

  • Some time ago, I noticed that the Pink Pearl eraser, made by Paper Mate, was looking different in color. A closer look revealed that the eraser was now being made in China rather than Malaysia, where it had been manufactured for a number of years. Other than the change in color, I was curious if there were any other differences.

Hi, Kevin! The Pink Pearl is what I grew up using. I wish companies would stop trying to make things 'better' only to make them ineffective. My favorite (yes, I make loads of mistakes, too) is the Pentel Hi-Polymer eraser. Thanks for the video, Kevin!! Have a lovely day, sir!!

The Hi-Polymer is my new favourite. Not so much because it erases like a premium-tier champ (there are better more expensive erasers), but because it comes in a very thin variant perfect for precise erasure.

Hi Nancy! Like so many things we grew up with, they are not the same today. The Pink Pearl and Pink Carnation erasers that I used in school were pretty decent erasers, but they were made differently than today's versions. I love the Pentel hi-polymer eraser! I use it often and does a terrific job. Thanks!

Hi DFT - I recently had a chance to try the thin version of the Pentel eraser and it's nice. Very precise! Thanks!

@@AlwaysAnalog Passing by here, saw this reply, and now there's something I want to add: Pentel's black Ain eraser is a total winner. It erases cleaner than the Hi-Polymer and with _barely_ any effort. Worth checking if you ever buy more erasers.

Cannot agree more. The Pentel Hi-Polymer eraser is by far the best eraser on the market.

Out of the few block erasers I’ve had the opportunity to use the pentel hi-polymer is my favorite. Although that Arch foam eraser I’ve seen you use in previous videos looks like it might be a very soon future purchase!

Hi ebodaman - the Pentel hi-polymer is a great overall eraser. If you have a chance to pick up an Arch foam eraser, give it a try. I have had excellent results from mine. They come in white and black. Thanks!

The Ain eraser is also brilliant. It can lift even the softest most ghost-spawning graphite I have access to (a Faber-Castell 6B pencil), and it takes no force whatsoever to use (unlike the Staedtler Mars that seems to grip the paper)

😊 As you mentioned: "A Tale of Two Pink Pearls"
    Well done.

Is anyone else like me, use a pink pearl once maybe twice and then can never find it again? I swear I must have a box somewhere with a hundred of them in there! ;)

I have the ones you lost, but who has the ones I lost.

LOL! Hi Greg - I know what you mean! Something about those pink erasers that cause them to disappear! Thanks!

I’ve never seen this type of eraser here in Malaysia.

These were made in Malaysia for quite some time. Maybe they didn't market them there.

      Most likely export-only.

Cheap big brand erasers, cheaply made. Business as usual. I really wasn't expecting any difference in performance between either of them, although the Chinese Pink Pearl seems to be a bit less messy with crumbs going by the footage.
Me personally, I'm spoiled now. There's no place in my kit for any eraser that performs below the level of the Staedtler Mars. Sure, it takes a degree of force to rub on the paper, but its graphite lifting capability is admirable.

Sakura erasers are better than mars plastic, recently bought a mars plastic made in germany, hut the sakura erasers are better, in my experience

    • @DinnerForkTongue
      @DinnerForkTongue 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@ranran8934 I know they're better, but that means they're above the absolute baseline that is the Mars. So they don't fit as examples.
The problem for me is Sakura, Tombow and Sumo erasers are _way_ more expensive than the Mars eraser where I live. Gotta love extra importing fees... So I gotta make tradeoffs. Usually I use the Faber-Castell Dust Free, or the thin Pentel Hi-Polymer for precision erasure jobs like strokes in certain Japanese kanji.

Staedtler erasers are very common in Canada.

Hi DFT - I think the Staedtler Mars would be a good baseline eraser. Most of these pink erasers are sub-standard. The only thing they offer is a cheap price. Luckily, here in the US most imported stationery items aren't particularly more expensive. Thanks!

The flavor of the Chinese ones is gross. The amount of bounce from the Chinese one is also very disappointing.I have some old USA-made Pink Pearls that are still soft and pliable.

Hi neerg63 - it seems they changed the formula on these erasers over the years. Great that you still have some of the old USA-made stock!
