- Recently I got a Mitsubishi 9800VB pencil (HB) and thought it might be fun to compare the variations of the 9800's from Mitsubishi. Here I look at the standard 9800, the 9800EW, the 9800VB and the 9852. All pencils have an HB core.

9800 and 9800 EW have slight sound difference. Isolating audio to writing only I heard a softness in 9800. I go with being siblings all. Your comprehensive reviews are always too good to pass up full consideration. With high regard, hats off to you from an analog appreciation person
Thanks so much, nancysdsk! I didn't think to isolate the audio, so thank you for letting me know!
Hi, Kevin! I love the Mitsu-bishi pencils. I have a couple of them and use them regularly. All of mine are HB, but I'd like to try some other grades, as well. On average I purchase a new pack of pencils once a month, except in July when school supply season begins and then all bets are off and I'll get as many different pencils I can lay my hands on. I may have a little pencil problem...on second thought, no...I don't think so. However, my estate will be valued in terms of pencils, perhaps. Thanks for the video. I always enjoy them very much. Have a lovely day, Kevin!
Hi Nancy! I'm like you when it comes to pencils! I already saw a "Back to School" display at a Staples store yesterday. Those poor kids aren't out for a month yet and already it is beginning! LOL! When I was a kid there was no mention of "back to school" until mid-August at the earliest. Those wonderful endless summers! Thanks!
My favorite Mitsubishi pencil is the maroon 9850 with the white eraser. It's a smooth writer and has an excellent eraser attached. I don't care for the eraser on the 9852, imo it's not as good as the white one on the 9850.
Hi Jennifer - the 9850 is a beautiful pencil in every way. I see why it's your favorite! Thanks!
I really like the color on that 9800VB; mysterious bacteria-fighting coating, though? It might affect the taste too much.
Very nice comparison, Kevin. Thanks!
Hi MAMO - happy to report the 9800VB is as tasty as all the others in the series. Thanks!
I have both 9800 EW and 9800(green). They are great at drawing manga. I bought it from Japan Surplus, they glide so good.
Japanese pencils are a perfect fit for their art and writing styles. Not exaggerating, they _are_ perfect.
Thanks, Kyle. You are right: they glide so good!
There are actually two imprint types for the 9800 that I know of that could distinguish when it was made (aside from the JIS logo).
The most common is Matured, which is the most commom 9800. The Patented is more or less in the 50s and has the patent number for the lead formula instead of the 'GENERAL WRITING' written in the Matured pencils.
The 9850 is more or less for 'academic' and mostly for school use (competitor to Tombow's 2882)
Also in the context of if they are similar or not, the 9800 is more or less is in step with the Tombow 8900, both of them referencing their color and number with the Castell 9000. They are more or less having the same purpose pencil wise, being their more affordable and general use pencil with no eraser.
Hi CRxTRDud3 - thanks for all the good information!
Good work sir. Keep it up.
Thanks so much! I'll keep at it!
Is there a place like a website or email or something like that where we can send suggestions of products to review? It's easy to lose track of suggestions when they're posted in video comments.
Hi ilurvemv - you can email me at alwaysanalog2hb@gmail.com Thanks!
Finally I got to order two units of Hi - Uni. One 2B and the other B. 2B is definitely smoother than 9800 HB (I have only these two Mitsubishis), but surprisingly less smoother than Tombow MONO 2B. The Hi uni cost me more than twice the price of MONO, but the paint job on the hi uni is better. Tombow MONO offers more for its price.
Hi UXD - thanks for sharing that. I don't think I have a Mono2B, but it sounds like it has the Hi Uni 2B beat on smoothness. The paint job on the Hi Uni pencils is incredible. Thanks!
@@AlwaysAnalog It is slightly less smooth, not many will notice a difference.
@@AlwaysAnalog Hi uni is slightly less smoother, most people won't see a difference.
They all seem to leave the exact same trace, but to their credit that is not saying much. I have four different brands of HB pencils with different feels* and when you put all their traces on the same paper, they all look the same. Incidentally I also have difficulty telling Pentel's Super Hi-Polymer lead from its Ain Stein equivalent in the same hardness grade. In both cases, even the erasability seems the same!
(*: Faber-Castell Eco - very smooth; Tilibra Académie - slightly scratchy; Acrilex Classic - only a tiny bit scratchier than the Académie; and Molin Jumbo - scratchy to the point of feeling like an F or H)
I don't know if these four Mitsubishi are all sons of the same graphite slab or if they only pass off as a family and put up a convincing act of it. All I know is, whichever is cheapest is automatically the winner. It's real hard to match a bona-fide 日本で鉛筆、and Mitsubishi more than fits that bill.
Hi DFT - thanks for the information about your experience with different HB's. One might think that a different feel equates to a line on the page, but that isn't always the case. I can't recall which of these was the least expensive, but I think they were all bargains relative to their performance and price. Thanks!
Love the videos!
Thank you, Nancy!
