  • A look at the Tombow 2558 in HB grade. This pencil is made in Vietnam, and features a yellow hexagonal barrel with a bronze-toned ferrule and pink eraser. I have reviewed the Tombow 2558 in B grade on this channel previous, and I was curious how the HB compared. I compare the two pencil as I take a closer look at this fine pencil. #pencils #pencilreviews #analog #asmr #handwriting

    I came here from your wonderful Cavalcade of Food channel and am amazed how many elements one can assess regarding the lowly lead pencil. Clearly I’ve taken them for granted since my writing days began in the 1960s. This is so interesting! Thank you for these insightful videos. I am going to look at the pencils in my junk drawer to see what treasure may be found! 🙂

      Hi rcdoodles! Thanks for coming by Always Analog! I appreciate you watching and if you have any interest in pencils then you'll find plenty of videos here! You may have some great old pencils in that junk drawer! Thanks!

    The ferrule finish is, I believe, typically called "gun metal".

    Thanks for doing the hand sharpen on this one. Impressive pencil. I like the ferrule color. I’m appreciating more the eraser portion of the review. There are many subtle nuances that you notice and describe for us. Well done.

      Thanks so much, EP! This is a wonderful pencil and I like the finish on the ferrule, too.

    Hi, Kevin! I love that 'B' pencil. Both look dark, but the 'HB' seemed scratchier to me. Now, I enjoy the feedback I get from any pencil on paper, but those smooth writing Japanese pencils are just wonderful. Thanks for the video, Kevin. I'll probably order the 'B' pencil from Amazon. Have a lovely day, Kevin!

      Hi Nancy! The B grade of this pencil is really beautiful! Glad you enjoyed the video - thanks for watching!

      Yes indeed. The HB is scratchier and the trace is not quite as uniform, but it has the advantage of better durability. The HB being only slightly harder lead is enough for it to wear down considerably more slowly.

    Thanks for another Tombow pencil review. For those who are interested: even the Tombow MONO and MONO 100 pencils are now made in Vietnam, but they are of a high quality. Only the Mitsu-bishi Hi-uni pencils are still made in Japan. The MONO 2B pencil writes very well, and is the best pencils I have ever used. I have yet to try a Hi-uni pencil, and see if it writes better than the MONO. Also, the MONO HB is smoother than the Mitsu-bishi 9800 HB.

      As long as the pencil is made to the made-in-Japan standards, it could be made anywhere - Argentina, Rwanda, Bosnia, Oman, Tajikhstan, doesn't matter -, and clearly that's the case for these pencils. Outsourcing isn't bad, if not done sloppily just to save a few thousand yen on the company's bottom line.
      Another Japanese brand that doesn't skimp out on outsourcing is Pentel. Their Brazilian-made products, especially pencil lead, are not the least bit behind the national Japanese-made fare.

      Hi UXD - The Mono and Mono 100 line are excellent pencils. I think you'll also find the Hi-Uni pencils to be of superior quality. While the Tombow pencils are made in Vietnam, I understand the graphite cores are still made in Japan. Thanks!

      True, the Tombows are of comparable quality to Japanese despite being assembled in Vietnam. Given that Tombow is the owner of their Vietnam factory.

      Thankfully it’s still Japanese graphite in. All of the Vietnam assembled pencils.

      Not a surprise at all. Tombow and Kitaboshi are essentially pencil royalty. I don't have personal experience but from all the analyses I hear from you both and other channels, they comfortably surpass even Musgrave's top line.

      Right now, I can say that the Tombow MONO 2B and the HB, are the best pencils I have used, even better than the Stdlr Lumograph 2B. I have yet to write with the Mitsu-bishi Hi uni 2B, and see if writes better than the Tombow 2B.

    • @mojahangard
      @mojahangard 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Crazytesseract I have used both Tombow Mono 100 2b and the Mitsubishi Hi-Uni 2b, and I prefer the Tombow. I also think that the Tombow writes smoother than the Blackwing 602 and Pearl, though the Matte is IMO the smoothest pencil in my toolbox. I also have both the Mono 100 and Hi-Uni in the 4B versions too.

    I find the B grades of Japanese pencils to be in the Goldilocks zone of darkness and hardness. If I could find a japanese pencil for sale, my default choice would be B. Although, I cannot immediately distinguish a B from an HB too.😅. Thanks for the video, I really enjoyed it

    I like this tombow pencil, but my favorite high quality, good value pencil is the Mitsubishi 9850 office pencil because it has an excellent eraser on the end of the pencil. The beautiful maroon color is so glossy and smooth. Kitaboshi 9606 is also a good office pencil with a decent eraser on it.
    I love Japanese wooden pencils with the Hi-Unis and Mono 100s at the top of my list, but I hoarde these pencils. I'll freely give away 9850s,.9606, or 2558 because they're still awesome compared to most wooden pencils.

      Hi Jennifer - I agree with you that the Mitsubishi 9850 is a wonderful pencil of excellent quality. The Japanese pencils are perhaps the finest made. Thanks!

    I’m not sure what are the Tombow Mono pencils are made of sure is graphite but I notice and compare with other high end pencils with exceptions with the 6b-12 steadtler… just with the Tombow HB little to not pressure is already dark enough equivalent to 3b or quasi-4B

      Also I forgot to me too thank you for the video so interesting. I got in to pencils this year and I’m going all around the internet getting the best pencils ✏️ for writing (little) and Drawing (a lot) 😅. Somehow I started to fall in love drawing pencils. Buying the best pencils does not mean become a better artist but the result are, only by knowing gaming experience and techniques does the real true abilities of an artist both in talent and by practicing. Thx once again.

    I have about 12 Ruwe degree 2 unbranded pencils left from my late grandfather's half gross box. I had more but some crumbled from any attempt at sharpening

    • @AlwaysAnalog
      @AlwaysAnalog  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi jvsuperdudebro - those Ruwe pencils are likely 50+ years old. They were bought out by Dixon in the late 1980's. Thanks!

      Maybe a crank sharpener like a Deli would work best to hone your pencils. That way they're not subject to the torsion inherent to using a hand sharpener.

    In darkness, I have personally noticed little to no difference between Japanese B and HB graphite. Their HB is _dark._ You can only tell visually between them because the B's trace looks more "full", more consistent and less spotty, like the paper's tooth bites better onto the lead. The real difference in my experience is on the tactile feedback: B glides more smoothly, brush-like, as I always say, though with a clear tradeoff in point retention.
    [I could go on and on about why that brush-like aspect is important to Japanese calligraphy but I doubt anyone here cares enough, so I'll spare you the essay.]
    That is excellent erasability, going by the camera footage. I'd give it no less than an A-.
    Fun fact: Tombow (tonbō) means "dragonfly" or "odonata", a popular insect in Japanese culture both old and new. Hence the dragonfly logo.

    • @AlwaysAnalog
      @AlwaysAnalog  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks, DFT! I detected the absolute slightest of differences in the darkness, but really it's negligible. Yes, the B is smoother and that is noticeable. I'm probably a tougher grader on erasability, although in fairness the particular paper I'm using can impact performance. Thanks for reminding us of the Tombow translation!
