Decision made - my Tesla is a keeper. What challenges are there in long-term EV ownership?

  • I've been debating this for ages - do I keep the car or flip it? I'm more than half way through the warranty, but have decided its a good bet to keep it.
What will I have to think about? What issues may affect reliability or cost me money? What things should I be worrying about in owning a Tesla over a long period?
Welcome to Just Get a Tesla, where I do a series of tests and challenges to help show people that instead of shopping around for EVs they should just get a Tesla...

I would recommend getting the cabin filters changed. I had mine changed after 2 years (almost exactly) and saw the ones removed by Tesla and they were clogged up with dust and dirt and definitely needed changing in my opinion

Look under the frunk/froot lid and you will see four square holes along the inside bottom edge. You can buy an aftermarket seal that fits those holes. Install the seal and it stops water going down into the cabin air filter at the bottom of the cabin air intake tunnel. Swamp smell fixed.

Interesting that you are thinking of holding on to your Y long-term. I have a white standard range model since June 2023 and am thinking about holding on to it for several years too. So far 13,000 klms it has been faultless. I'll swap the tyres around this summer. It'll be interesting to see how you get on with your tyres and longevity with the vehicle.

I have had a Model 3 SR+ since 2020. I change from summer to winter tires (Canada) and have approximately 50,000 km on each set. I may need to change them this year but I've been saying that for a while now.
Drive normally at lower speeds and your tires, car and battery will last surprisingly longer.

Well, I’m well over 6’ tall pensioner and have a 3-year old Mazda MX30 that is coming up for changing later in the year. Loved it and accepted the awkwardness of the “suicide doors” and even the range anxiety too. Then it broke down twice due to its faulty 12v battery. Although it was replaced under warranty and been a great car to drive generally, it’s disappointing that Mazda are all so slow in expanding their limited EV range. So I hunted out an alternative. First tried the Volvo EX30 that was brilliant, so much better; then the Tesla Y as there was so many good reviews and recommendations for this model. Although it was the basic version, it is the very best car for comfort that I’ve experienced. So it’s on the shopping list and fully support yours and other views that it economically makes sense with so few things that will need attention in the future. And if the Juniper version gets released in time and there’s an offer deal on as well, then it’s a Win/Win all round. Great Channel! 😊

Check out the Ioniq 5 too. It is much superior to the Volvo. All depends if you want some buttons or not if you might like the Model Y or Ioniq 5 more.

I have Michelin cross climate on my car and just got the Goodyear vector all season on my wife’s car. Both good and love the versatility of an all season and in the cold wet winters they are great. Feel softer when cold and braking distance so much better when cold and wet. The Goodyear were slightly cheaper and I would probably go Goodyear but still happy with my michelin which is more summer biased but the Goodyear maybe a little more comfortable. Keep up the good videos!

It’s my second EV and I have faith in the batteries, and even if they do fail, by the time it’s out of battery warranty there will be plenty of places fixing them, as we’re already seeing in the US and Europe.

I just had two rear knuckles and two front outer control arms replaced under warranty on my 2 year old, 39000 Tesla model Y LR. Cabin air filters were £34 and a hour to watch a YT video. I rotated my own tyres every 10k miles for £0, I had PPF fitted from new on most of the car including the headlights. I found a Tesla recycled parts seller (breakers yard) who sell a front light from £199 which will be plug and play followed by a headlight alignment as I didn’t fancy shelling out over £1200 for a headlight. An inspection before the end of warranty by Cleeverly will be worth every penny, the problem you may have is that this service is very very popular, so book early. I have run the Crosscliamate tyres on my previous model 3 and was very happy with them. I’d recommend finding a good independent garage with Hunter wheel alignment equipment as Tesla charges two fortunes for this service and have the alignment done after you replace your tyres.

I have a model Y of a similar age, it has done 57000 miles and I have no plans to sell it for a long time.
I got my car checked by Tesla Aberdeen before it went out of warranty and they replaced a few things that I hadn't noticed were wrong with it.
I would also consider Pirelli Scorpion EV all season tyres, I have them and have been very impressed, they are supposed to be better than the Michelins in the wet but not quite as good in the snow. I do far more driving in the wet than the snow and they have still been good in the snow so I am very happy.😊

Living in NE Scotland like yourself, I would certainly recommend a brake lubrication service. Not because of brake wear, but of the amount of salt that is used on the roads.Having watched James and Kate videos of James servicing Teslas here, then it's eye opening how much corrosion can get into the pads and callipers.
Bit of Lanoguard or similar round the sub frame components as well, and it should last for years.

Hi Ian. Our Model Y is about the same age as yours. We live in Victoria, west coast of Canada. We have not had any defects or problems, with one exception. The button that drops one back seat flat stopped working. We also have a 4-year warrantee. The warrantee does not require us to do any maintenance, very different than the warrantees in our previous gas-powered cars. I would not recommend the optional extended warrantee though, because the extended warrantee does require one to pay for regular preventive maintenance and one must also pay a deductible amount for any repairs. Cheers.

Thanks for doing this. I am interested how they do long term. I recently went backwards in tech in vehicles because I wanted a "ten year ownership" vehicle. I traded in a 2022 Ford Edge St with all the electronic nannies to overcome the cell phone staring drivers that I believe won't last, on a dinosaur 2018 Toyota Tundra with low tech. I fully expect the Tundra to last longer than newer Ford based upon the history of both vehicles and that electronics fail much faster. I too have a tendency to flip vehicles often. Shall we compare 3 years from now? 5 and 10? I have been playing around with adding a used Tesla as a 2nd vehicle but there isn't enough data for me to be confident in long term (decade) cost. I recently purchased a home that had solar panels already installed and I am definitely paying the gas tax for the reliability of this truck.
PS folks think Teslas are maintenance/repair free. They are far from it. There is quite a bit going on just to manage the thermodynamics of heating and cooling the batteries and cabin. Google super manifold and tesla heat pump issues. This guy goes over the systems the best I have seen. th-cam.com/video/7HC72p2gfuQ/w-d-xo.html

Brakes need good hard use from time to time to keep them clean. Its not that they wear out, more that lack of hard use can lead to rust or pitting. No major dramas, and I’m definitely “pro stalk” when it comes to new car considerations.

I’ve always kept my ICE cars long term and intended to do so with my 2023 MY RWD. I bought it in preference to the M3 for the height of the seats as my wife and I are in our 70s. The one thing that will cause me to change my mind is if the promised M2 has seats closer in height to the MY than the M3. I’d hope to almost exchange the MY for the M2 (price-wise) and get the benefits of new firmware/hardware, seats etc. The seat height will be the deal breaker!! 😀

Hi Ian - My husband and I love your posts, and watch you regularly. We are from Australia, and thinking of upgrading our current car to an EV, and considering a Tesla. However, we have three young children, at the age where over the next five years they will transition out of baby seats and into the usual spaces a car provides. What we are wondering is: how comfortable is that middle seat in the back? We have a regular school commute of about 25 minutes per day, twice a day, and go on a long trip across the country at least once a year. Can someone sit in that middle seat for these trips? I've had my MYP just over a year now with 21000 miles. Absolutely loving it! Based on a couple of engineers who have been testing various tires, I am switching over to 19" Hankook Ion Evo all season with 50,000 mile warranty. Having Unplugged Performance (Hawthorne CA), remove the 21" to go for the 19" tires with better ride quality as well as slightly improved range. in addition they will be installing their designed and tested coilover suspension lift kit and their UP-03 lightweight forged wheels. Their reduced weight should help with mileage. These were the same ones they used to race up Pikes Peak Colorado in their modified Model S. Yeah i'm a little crazy, but like you I do plan on keeping the car long term. The ride quality is really rough, hence the change in suspension as well as adding adjustable rear camber arm set so that the tires wear more evenly, unlike the stock ones Tesla uses. I would keep the tesla you have. it's got a new brain, it hasnt cost you in servicing. With regards to the headlight replacement cost, that could happen to any car. I reckon that the hardware 4 in the upcoming Juniper model probably will only benefit countries that have full self driving where signs with writing need to be read. But then maybe hardware 4 might benefit more for the new vision system for parking, and im guessing that because the new hw4 has higher frames per second on its cameras possible to calculate the distance of an object more accurately. Im hoping to keep my blue model y with lfp battery, hopefully for 20 years. However, I did say that about my Prius, and I only had that for 5 years. As for the battery in the Tesla, data on it seems to be pointing to one of the best built car batteries out there, and looks like it will out last other manufacturers' batteries. I would like to see more of your Tesla videos in the future, one vote for keeping the car.

Goodyear vector gen 3 promised longer milage than cross climate. I would recommend Goodyear, there going good under my car. The goodyear all season vector gen 3 is better performing than cross climate in dry and wet handling. Only in snow cross climate is better. In a mild climate with more heavy rains at times, I would recommend Goodyear, also from my two year driving experiences. I would also to advise you to change the tire if possible. Look for a smaller diameter rim, the smallest possible. For my car I went from 17 inch cast alu to 15 inch steel, also going down in width from 7J to 6J. The steel is thinner, therefore the smallest cast alu fit was 16 inch, not 15 inch in my case. With going down to 15 inch rim, check also the right offset, the rim is not sticking out to the side, it will increase drag forces. With going down to 15 inch rim I selected also a more narrow tyre. It will have more resistance against water aquaplaning, increasing safety. In my case I lowered the weight of each wheel from 21 kg to 16 kg, resulting with going down in weight to 16 kg for 4 wheels, increasing range for about 10-12%, which is quite a lot.

I've had my Model Y since Sept 2022 and rotated my tyres twice (AU$100 in total) at my local tyre store (I should have bought a hydraulic jack instead). When I do change the tyres, that rotation service will be free. As someone said below, changing the cabin filters is a good idea, but you also might want to get some new wiper blades (unlike our previous Mercedes C class, where they wanted AU$130 EACH assembly - no option to just get the blades only). As for keeping it, I'm waiting to see what the Model 2/Q/? SUV is like because the Model Y is simply too big for a retired couple.
Also, I have found a company here in Melbourne that has been selling upgrade wheels to Model 3/Y owners, and they have a pile of wheels and tyres for AU$2k per set (all brand new, minus a few kms). The cost of replacing the Kuhmo tyres like for like (plus the air pressure sensors), will cost well OVER $2k so I'm thinking of getting a set of Model 3 18" rims & tyres, so give me a softer ride, and on top of that, the tyres are cheaper than the 19" model Y's.
