  • Kyle has had an insane week! Within a period of 7 days he was able to drive the Tesla Model S Plaid, Lucid Air Dream Edition Performance, Mercedes EQS 450+/580 4MATIC, and the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo. In this video Kyle takes you on a bit of a "mind dump" while driving his Tesla Model 3 to share his thoughts on the cars mentioned, where they all shine and which will be best for you based on your preferences. We are looking forward to spending more time with these cars and running them through our usual tests, and that will come very soon!

    Great video!
    Lucid air: Long distance ultra luxury cruiser, best range. Best blend and most balanced between ultra luxury and sporty.
    > I'd buy Lucid Air if Money wasn't an object.
    S Plaid: straight line beast, best acceleration and best charging network, safest purchase in terms of trade in value as of now.
    > I'd buy Model S Plaid if I was into drag racing.
    EQS: best driver, most comfortable ride, best infotainment, and most quiet.
    > I'd buy EQS if I was just into Mercedes with a short commute
    Taycan: the pure sports car and best charging curve (before lucid comes out)
    >I'd buy a Taycan as a pure "fun" car :)

    German TV already did a range test with the EQS 450+ from Munic to Berlin. They reached 396 miles (638 km) with 30 miles (49 km) left in the HV battery. Speed on Autobahn between 75 to 87 MPH with an average above 64 MPH because of traffic.

    Regarding highway road noise, that’s a tough one. Sometimes the charts say one thing but the feel is just not quite there. I think it’s a combination of vibrations and sound frequency. Vibrations affect the way we hear sound, and obviously two sounds can have the same amplitude (volume) but the higher frequency noise will sound like garbage while the deeper, lower frequency sounds are less obtrusive.

    After cross shopping between these four vehicles, I ended up getting the Taycan and pre ordered the Lucid Air. I mainly got the Taycan because of how well it drove. It felt like a supercar, for cheap. Plus it's amazing looks, I especially love the rear! I ordered the Lucid Air because of its amazing efficiency, better than Tesla's and I went into the showroom myself to feel how the built quality was. Amazing. I was simply not satisfied with Tesla's built quality for how much I paid for it, so the Plaid was out of the question. The EQS, EQE don't get me wrong, they do look amazing...but it's not my style. I hate how round it looks. It really does not wow me. The efficiency also wasn't there either for luxury sedan. Meanwhile the Lucid Air checked every box of mines, which is why I preordered one. 🙂

    Great video, once again! I've found that Bjørn's 1000km is the ultimate road trip capability test. A shorter drive means that range can take precedence over charging. A longer drive is futile, because the average speed really doesn't change after 600mi / 1000 km. Tried that too, drove for 24 hours with my M3P and in the end, avg speed was exactly the same it was after 1000 km.

    Minor thought on styling between EQS and Lucid. As a European the Lucid looks very American with a huge and fat boot (back), it is just what I see as a styling and very typical on American cars. Ford tried this styling when they bought one of their large sedans to Europe and it killed this product. So the Lucid looks like an American car that Euopeans tend not to like, while the EQS is European styling, with some fast-back styling and I can understand why you don't like it.

    • @sc705
      @sc705 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I'm neither a fan of the EQS nor Lucid styling (esp their rears). Both of their rears are bloated and soft. I think much of it has to do with aerodynamics. EQS looks less luxurious and cheaper than the price suggests. If I had to choose a winner between both on exterior aesthetics alone, I'd say Lucid has the styling that will age better. EQS will be known as Mercedes' first EV effort (even though its a great car)

    More choices becoming available in the EV market is extremely positive and very good sign of the expansion of the EV market. The real question here is not which one is the best EV but rather which EV resonates most with you and suits your personal preferences and needs and fits your budget. The EV market is clearly exploding and following the exponential S curve adoption that we see of all disruptive technologies which will result in the inevitable and incontrovertible demise of ICE vehicles and relegate them to the dust bin of history.

    I used the online configurator to spec out aTaycan 4 Cross Turismo and 4S model, and with the options I thought were important, I got prices of $107,470 and $123,290 respectively. If you go crazy with the options list, you can bring the price up substantially. For me, self-control is the key when shopping the options list! You also get 3 years of free 30 minute DC charging sessions at EA with the Taycan.

    You'll have to redo the comparison when Plaid has the track update and sound canceling. Otherwise can't judge Plaid in these comparisons. Great reviews as always. Nice to see competition in the space. I probably lean toward to Plaid for performance once all updates are finished and the EQ for comfortable cruising. The EQ is a bit of an eyesore for me so opens up opportunity for Lucid Air. I also like the driver assist side on Tesla. I wonder what they used at Nurburgring. Look forward to Cadillac and Lincoln joining the space and Korean, Japanese, Chinese makes.

    I still have a couple of years more before my next car. So that gives me the opportunity to see how these cars play out and pass through their production ramp.
    I have an S now. I enjoy the (free) supercharging network. Range is important to me. So I'm looking for a 400+ mile, but certainly 350+ at a minimum. That rules out a lot of EVs in their current models. That also has me focusing on the Lucid. That plus comfort and luxury, which the S is not there IMO.
    Thanks for this roundup video. Very helpful.

    The majority of car buying consumers are not "ready for an adventure" when it comes to charging an electric vehicle regardless of the charging speed of this vehicle or that vehicle. IMO the strength of Tesla is their charging network. Pull in to the space, put the charger in, wait for your desired charge, take charger out. Leave. Works like that 99.5% of the time. No worrying about taking out a card, billing, reliability, etc, etc. That's a huge selling point for those shopping for an EV.
    If they open the charging network to other EV's that's great but I'm not interested in taking chances with other charging options or using a third party app to locate this charger, that charger, better route planner, etc. I'm willing to bet most other car buying consumers are not either. People want a no brainer driving experience.

    Thank you for a great comparison and a great impression at the end. After driving the Tesla and the EQS and researching data for the rest, I've also come to the conclusion that the EQS is the car for me. I am not happy that dealers are asking more than MSRP for them. Hell, they are asking MSRP or more on USED EQSs. Yeah, no way, no how. If I have to pay MSRP, I'll custom order a new one to my specifications, thank you very much. Since I have other cars for out-of-town travel, the EQS53 looks to be my best option. The only thing is that it is likely to be one to one and half year before I get it...

      Be nice to know if the thermal throttle issue is a P45 specific issue, seems many other owners of non P45 variant are not encountering this issue on fairly long trips of say 450-900km. At this time I have a pre order deposit down on an Ioniq 5 here in Canada. Very much looking forward to it and also have deposit on EV6, I am looking at either in RWD long range format, predominantly expect to charge at home via 220. ID.4 & M3 SR+ are next options but I don't really want to go M3 SR+ since they are just too common and I prefer access to a physical dealership for any issues that may occur which I expect they will in these first year EV's coming to market

    I understand this issue has very little to do with the driving experience comparisons that Kyle has so ably described in this video, but I am wondering when we will have some additional information and specifications on the V2G (vehicle to grid) bilateral charging capability of the Lucid Air vehicles. Will the capabilities be close to what Ford has stated will be the V2G specifications of the F-150 Lightning? To my mind, this capability may be the deciding factor as to which vehicle (between the Plaid, Taycan, Mercedes, and Lucid) would be the best (and, perhaps, most practical) vehicle to own.

  • @williamsjayr

    Great video. I appreciate your take on the 4 models…especially as they have been pretty much back to back. One thing that to me is important in the decision making process is the dealership experience. Having had an Audi Etron and going to Audi for service…I feel the dealership model is broken. I went in due to a ‘Maintenace Reminder’ the car gave me. It turns out, it was basically top off the windshield wiper fluid, and make sure doors were greased. Ironically, the car the game me as a loaner was an ICE Q3. I was forced to go to a gas station to refill it too. I hadn’t been to a gas station since going electric. That definitely took me out of the ‘electric experience’. Finally, the other dealership experience that as I get older…I loathe and will do ANYTHING to avoid is buying the car. I ordered my Tesla Model 3 Perf over my phone, and from there on out…all communication was through app. Maybe it is just me, but THIS is the way of the future…and I’ll stick with this business model over a traditional dealership. I guess that means Tesla, Lucid or Rivian!

      That texting thing is great until you have problems and no one will message you back and your car is 50 miles away and you have no idea what’s going on. I had 6 months of that with my LR AWD Model 3 and then Tesla agreed to a full refund as they couldn’t fix my car. I liked the car but couldn’t bring myself to potentially have to go through that again so bought an ID3. (Funnily enough Tesla have just opened a service centre 5 miles from my house 🤣😂).

It's a great chance to pick your brain and get your raw thoughts on a car category, charging network, etc. Would love to see something similar on the Model Y vs. E-GMP vs. Mach-E vs. MEB. • @e-redj
      @e-redj 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on where you are in Europe. SuCs are more evenly distributed, but you have more CCS high power places, and even more stalls.
      So, if you can live with an occasional 50kW charger CCS is already in (western) Europe the better option.
