  • Kyle and Coleton from @OutofSpecDetailing take a full in-depth look into the quality of the Lucid Air. The guys start by looking at a brand new Mercedes EQE, then heading into the Lucid Air's initial inspection inside and out. Then they start digging into paint and body defects, paint depth measurements with a paint meter, and compare the results to Tesla.

    I started cleaning family vehicles when I was about 10. This video took me to a nice place from my past when I was learning how to take care of cars.
    Thinking about it, I'm cringing a little because the process was much more crude. Wash, dry, then paste wax and wipe with a towel. Done.
    Anxiously waiting for the next step............

    Is it possible there are different alloys used on various parts of the body that may be throwing off the accuracy of the thickness meter? Maybe the hood or the roof surround is a different alloy than the body panels. Though the various readings around the main panels are suspect. Maybe reach out or Lucid and the paint thickness gauge manufacturers to see if that could change readings

    • @cleardetailing5499
      @cleardetailing5499 ปีที่แล้ว

      The materials underneath don’t matter. The gauge is reading from the metal to the tip of the meter.

    • @josephlaudisi2866
      @josephlaudisi2866 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok thanks, wasn’t sure about your meter, some read only ferrous metal, some non ferrous, some read both, but require different calibration. It’s been many years since I used one, so I am sure newer units are much better. Either way film thickness was low

    • @sactojlm
      @sactojlm ปีที่แล้ว

      It looks like paint thickness was read from a sub $100 (like $67) meter bought on Amazon, not reflecting the quality of the other equipment and supplies used at this shop. Watching video how the paint shop works at Lucid, including the automated spray booth, I'm surprised at the discrepancy in readings obtained from near the same area on the hood where the hood was sprayed. I'm not an apologist for Lucid, but I would not personally state opinions on paint thickness based on a cheap, and possibly uncalibrated, meter.

    • @cleardetailing5499
      @cleardetailing5499 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s calibrated. Simple tool that measures thickness. Does a harbor freight tape measure the same length as a Snap on ? 🤔

    • @sactojlm
      @sactojlm ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cleardetailing5499 If the tape measured in microns, probably not. Go with the Harbor Freight or use your thumbnail. But at micron increments, the measuring tool, and it's accuracy, requires quality instrumentation.

    One thing I would like to understand is "what do you do AFTER" a full Coleton job -- paint correction, ceramic coating, and so on. "No worries about going through the car wash down the street?" Or, as I suspect, is it more along the lines of "don't you dare even TOUCH the car again!" Can normal human beings hand-wash a vehicle after spending a few thousand dollars on jobs like these, or do they just have to let their cars get filthy dirty for weeks, then go in and let the detailer do a $500 wash job every time you want it washed? After you spend this kind of money on every teensy tiny little detail, do you just park the car in the middle of your living room, or can you actually drive the thing like "a normal car" again?
