  • A nature photographer presents a targeted review of the Sony DSC HX400V with photos taken over the past year to illustrate what his settings and preferences can produce. He makes good use of the Clear Image Zoom to get photographs of animals, insects, flowers and landscapes to show just what can be done with this camera in the right hands and with the right knowledge of the machine.

    Thank you for video on the Sony DSC HX 400v,
    I took notes to help me get the settings going as soon as i get this camera out of its box. Now, thanks to you, at least I know where to start.
    I know where to go, and what to do, and have a understanding of what the settings do thanks to your tutorial of the functions.
    I wasn't sure if this camera would be all I really want. Thank you for adding your pictures, I have been taking pictures of mostly birds, very much like you. I didn't see anything like your video on the internet regarding this camera it was most helpful! Thanks
    I love the close ups and details of those birds. I have never written a review before, but you deserve a thank you.
    I will also be watching this again to go with the useful notes.

    Grea videos Carl
    I am a complete novice.
    I got a new HX400V a number of years back and took a few OK pictures . My wife always used to complain about how long I took and taking pictures sort of took over the walk or the trip .
    But recently retired and my wife and I have an 7 day safari in Tanzania this summer . She has agreed that I can take what she calls “the big camera” - just got 7 months to learn how to use it such that I can take a variety of nature and wildlife pictures .
    Thanks for your informative videos

    • @carlreader8939
      @carlreader8939  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind words, Will. Once the clear image zoom is on, you simply zoom the lens. In the display you should see in the upper right a zoom slider that goes up to 100 times zoom, which is 2400mm. I hope that helps. Let me know if that does it. All the best. Carl

    I own this cam, I bought it because another customer recommended it to me in the shop. It is worth the money in every way. The downside is the small sensor, which shows it´s limit when there is not much light. You might run into trouble using the zoom in low light conditions, so stay at short focal length, when there is little light. The flashlight is too near to the lens, but otherwise it does its job quite well. The camera is also not very suitable for quick action, like sports. You can´t do RAW format. This cam is very good for general purposes, but if you need performance at the extremes you might need to switch to some other more expensive models. I recommend a polarizer, a skylight filter and an extra battery as a replacement. You can run this cam without the standard battery by pluging in a power bank with the USB-cable, which allows you to make long videoshots or make twothousand photos on an extended field trip in one day. If you don´t remove the batery, the camera wants to reload the battery out of the power bank, therefore wasting energy that can be used to power the camera instead.

      Hello, and thank you for your kind words. In manual mode, you might try setting the shutter speed and aperture and then adjusting the ISO to get the proper exposure. If you look at the LCD, the camera will tell you if the exposure is too dark or too light, then you can adjust any of those options. The other functions should be the same. I hope this helps. i like the camera, its bit tricky for first time, after dealing with no raw i think its a good camera, i dont go beyond iso 800, and use BW setting and use dro lv, with good results in nature photos, little bugs are a bit challenging, sometimes the photos looks like aquarelle in color, also in 4 years its been twice in service once for the rubber of the lens it just came out. my guess sony hates this camera starting by the name, and they thought it was going to compete with the rx10 series.

    I’m thinking about buying this camera. Can it do HDR? Can it use Sony’s focus stack app?
    I have a Canon Rebel DSLR but don’t want to carry all those lenses etc. and have to continually change them for far away and close ups. I thought this might be great for more all around use.

    • @carlreader8939
      @carlreader8939  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi MIchelle, It has an automatic HDR function that you choose. The camera takes three photos and melds them into one. To focus stack, you'd need to use the camera on a tripod and use the flexible spot in focus area and move the spot around to take as many photos as you think would do the trick of stacking. Its smallest f-stop is f8 so take that into consideration. It is a great camera for all-around use but you would have to learn a new system and that takes some doing. Take care, Carl

      Carl Reader - thanks for your reply. I like to hike and really like the bridge idea. I hate changing lenses all the time and don’t want the added weight. Does Hx400 have a gps? Do you use filters (CPL, ND) with it?
      Also I saw your other videos on the A6000. I’m considering getting that one too- later. Maybe in a year or so-And selling my Canon set up. So are these the two Cameras you use?

      @@Lightsonthelake Hi, the HX400 does have gps (helpguide.sony.net/gbmig/45306861/v1/en/contents/TP0000518252.html) and I don't use filters with it, although I do have an ND filter for the A6000. I use the HX400V as a walk-around camera and for bird photography, and I use the A6000 for work shooting school sports. I also have a slew of Nikon equipment that mostly sits there now, but I might trade my D7000 and D90 for a full-frame Nikon, although I also dread carrying all that heavy stuff around, especially since a football player ran into my shoulder about a year ago and knocked me on my butt and tore three tendons in the shoulder. It sounds like the conditions you shot in were different from what I decided were right for my settings. If you look in the viewfinder or LCD, it will show you what the photos will look like, and you can change the settings making the photo darker or lighter for the right exposure. If you want things to be more colorful, try vivid under creative style, or add more saturation. Some of my other videos go through this if you think they might be helpful. All the best. Carl

      @@carlreader8939I searched about this problem and it looks like 70% of the hx400v buyers have that problem, which i dont want to believe. The problem as i read seems to be that after 2-3 years of use the ribbon tape wire for stabilisation mechanism gets mirco fractures and the lens stabilisation no longer is working.There are some solutions but for short time. The best solution is to change the ribbon tape wire but it is difficult to open the camera by yourself. I cant believe that sony would make this mistake, but i dont know. It is maybe the best compact camera for this price but i cant buy it knowing that after 2 years i am gonna get this problem. I will continue to explore and will see what will happen. Thank you all the best. 👋

      I bought the hood on Amazon. It was a Zeiss hood and cost $27 U.S., but someone else asked about the hood and I looked on Amazon for them and it was no longer there. Other hoods are available there. Look for a DS-C hood 55mm. As for a uv filter, I don't use them, but there are plenty available on Amazon and elsewhere. With filters, I say get the most expensive one you can afford, since the cheap ones can mess up your photos. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. All the best. Carl

      @@kianjol5739 Do you mean the photo repeats itself when you press the shutter release? The camera shoots 10 frames per second, so you would get 10 photos of the same thing if you hold down the shutter release on one subject. To change that, go to the round wheel on the back of the camera (the control wheel), and press the left side of the wheel. You can change to single shot (the top square box) to take one shot. If the second option down (several square boxes) is highlighted, you can get up to 10 frames per second. Other options here give you timed release and bracketing (taking several shots of varying lightness). I hope this helps. If not, let me know what happens exactly when the mirrors show up. Take care. • @carlreader8939
      @carlreader8939  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The widest the lens goes is f2.8, good for portraits with soft backgrounds, but it is only f2.8 at the 24mm wide angle, so you would have to get very close to your subject. Also, if you stand very far away with the zoom extended, you can get a soft background, due to the laws of compression. If you use the automatic portrait mode, the camera takes over and would do its best to focus on the eyes and get as soft a background as possible. The camera also has smile and face detection.

Some Panasonic bridge cameras have fully rotational screens, and the Sony A5100 has a flip-up screen good for vloggers and selfies. You can see yourself as you hold it away from you.
