- I take a look at another 1/2.3" sensor ultra zoom bridge camera. This time it's a mid-range model with a nice mixture of features for the price, especially the integrated electronic viewfinder (EVF). Price wise it's also in the middle, so given the usual benefits and issues of a fully integrated camera like this with its small sensor, is it worth checking out? Let's look over the camera!

It's 2021 and yesterday I got one from a kid who never used it.
I am already topping the pictures from my Lumix FZ80.
2022 still own this camera, still using it and put aside my nex 5t in dry box, good for traveling without hassle for changing wide or Tele lens. Although the pictures quality is just O.K compare to my Sony next 5t using prime lenses.
This camera is outstanding I used one for years. The only problem I ever had was the battery compartment is held in place by the a tiny piece of plastic which eventually broke. I used it for a year with a piece of tape holding it closed to connect the battery contact. It was too expensive to fix, so I bought another one which I have used for years as well.

I was thinking to buy a reflex camera but when I compare photos of this camera and a reflex I don't see any differences it seems that this camera takes better photos than a reflex

I still can us the cam but in zoom 30x and above it is hard to get great pictures. In all other points it is a great camera and if you would buy this in 2024 it is still a great budget camera

Messing around with it appears to give me around 0.5 kilometers of "reach" to have a normal sized person fully visible in the photo.

I'm glad this was useful for you. Keep in mind that these types of cameras are pretty old now. Their main use case these days is the long optical zoom lens. For anything else it's probably better to use a decent smartphone or get an interchangeable lens camera with a large sensor like the Sony Alpha series.
One particular feature that interest me the most is DMF. But it's release date is Feb-2014.
Does any other Bridge-Cam offer this feature(DMF)?
No idea. You will need to look through their current line of cameras and check the online manual of each.
between sony hx400 and a nikon p900, what is the best choice? the prices are closer to both....
What type of photography do you want to do? How large/small do you want a camera to be? Is the long integrated zoom lens more important than overall image quality over something like a Canon EOS M50 kit ($600 vs $650)? I haven't used a P900, but that was Nikon's all-in-one flagship before the P1000, so I'd expect that camera to have a decent feature set.

Anyone know why this camera creates a new video file every 10 min on a 30 min recording?
How large are the files? Exactly 2GB or 4GB? Sorry, I didn't try this out so I'm not sure. Some cameras are setup to only make video files of a specific size or smaller and then they break it up into pieces. With my Canon EOS M50 it can make video files over 4GB if the SD card is formatted a certain way.
How do you put eternal microphone? I have this Digital camera but has no Place for connection.

Those are questions only you can answer for yourself. I personally don't see bridge cameras as a good option unless the photographer specifically wants a small camera with a long zoom lens. Besides that, there are many other options out there.
What's the difference between higher end point and shoot cameras like this and mirrorless DSLRs?
(I mean neither of them have an actual mirror prism/shutter or an optical view finder)
Mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses: The most recent and advanced cameras with a mount so lenses can be changed. These often have large sensors inside. Large sensors are better than small ones for a number of reasons. These have an LCD screen and/or electronic viewfinders. Light goes straight to the sensor in these.
Digital SLRs (DSLR): These have the large sensors and interchangeable lenses like mirrorless cameras, but have an optical viewfinder with a mechanical setup inside that diverts the light different ways.
This camera is similar to an ILC, but the lens is attached to the camera. It also has a very small sensor inside, so image quality won't be the best. The main benefit of this type of camera is the long zoom lens attached to it. So you can get something relatively low cost with a long optical zoom.

The owner of the shop allows me to film there. That said, I only spend about 30 minutes to 1.5 hours with each camera. My videos are more about handling of the camera instead of image quality. These two cameras should be similar considering the sensor in them is the same size. I personally think the Sony is a better camera in most aspects.

No idea, I can't find much information on the hx350. It might be a release outside of the USA. At face value it looks very similar to the hx400v. I don't imagine the output is much different.
Hello, the HX350 is a newer (2016 vs 2014), slightly cheaper, and stripped-down version of the HX400V. If I'm not mistaken it is basically the same camera as the HX400V but misses some of the "gadgets" : no external flash shoe, no wifi, no NFC, no downloadable camera apps, no GPS, no external mic jack. Up to you to see if it is worth the difference in money, in function of your use cases. Beware that both seem to be subject to the E:62:10 recurring problem.
I had this camera for many years now. Excellent photos and videos. But now it has 62:10 error after I dropped it. Any idea why and fixing it?

I recorded this a long time ago so I can't give you a definitive yes, but all of the cameras I've used with an electronic viewfinder allow you to see a preview and while recording through the viewfinder or back screen (one or the other, never at the same time). I'd be surprised if this camera can't but I guess there is always that possibility with cheaper cameras.

I just purchased this camera. Cost is R7000 south African rands. So its definitely not a cheap camera. I wanted to move from my Canon SX510HS to the Canon SX70HS but the Sony was cheaper. I will probably return the camera for a refund as certain things irritate me mainly build quality and slow focus.
The problem with all of these "bridge cameras" is that they use the same sensor size and tend to have a slow (small aperture) lens. You probably won't find much of a change in quality between any of them. If you want a big improvement in image quality you need a camera with a larger sensor and probably one with interchangeable lenses. Another thing to look for is one that has "phase detect" focusing on the sensor. None of the bridge cameras like this have it. Think along the lines of something like the Sony A5100.
Nice video, Scott...lots of good info....I just bought one of these Sony HX400V's and like it though it is a lot more complicated than my older Canon! I has a question....after taking a picture the view screen fills with colorful graphs and stays "on" with a tiny copy of the pic I just took surrounded by a tone of technical info -?- I don't understand why? I only uses these cameras for like 30 minutes to 1.5 hours to record footage for the video. If that doesn't work I can't say exactly without having the camera in my hands. I'd suggest looking through the manual for stuff like "photo review" and "histogram".
Lens problem in this camera Error 62:10 and 62:11. Where I can buy new lens?
Likely Sony if they even still offer repair services, though maybe ebay has parts.
I just attempted to repair this. You ultimately have to take the entire camera apart. Once apart and looking at the micro screws and all the parts that somehow can go back together, I gave up. This is a fix for someone who is very experienced in this type of repair. Good luck.

I got this camera but my strap is kinda difficult to fix in.. Any reviews about straps for HX400V. Plus the Viewfinder is functional and the monitor isn't... Do they interchange functions. Help please.
It's difficult to say because I don't have access to the camera. I only had an hour or two to use the camera for this video. However, the Peak Design strap system should work. Their stuff isn't cheap, but it's nice quality and versatile. I tried out some of their gear a while back ( th-cam.com/video/QVCDMkWZ0v0/w-d-xo.html ). It's a quick release setup where these little round things latch onto the camera with cord and then the actual strap connects to the circles. If that doesn't work, try fully resetting the camera:

Yeah, these small cameras with fixed long zoom lenses are the one cheap option for that type of photography. Of course aspects like autofocus and image quality won't be like an expensive DSLR/mirrorless setup, but it all depends on what you personally find acceptable and you can't find that out until getting something and trying. The lens on this camera does not come off. Something like the Sony A6100, Canon M200, Canon EOS M50 Mark II, Fujifilm X-T200, Nikon Z50, and a few others are the entry point for mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras. Any of those would be fine. If they are too expensive you can consider used cameras or ones that were recently discontinued like the Sony A6000.

@The Big Average - Jordan Speck You can find the list of people complaining about the E:62:10 problem on the (non-commercial) website sony-e-62-10.atspace.cc. Considering the fact that the problem is due to a flex connector breaking after successive extensions of the lens, I personally wouldn't advise buying one, especially in second hand. Discussions are ongoing with SONY but with no success till now.

I've been trying to manually set shutter speed but am having some issues. I've read the shutter speed of the Sony DSC-HX400V is able to go as low as 30 seconds however i can only get it to go to 1/4 whether I'm in manual or shutter priority mode.
Anyone had this problem or can tell me how to sort it cause it's driving me crazy!
It's odd you can't get to 30 seconds in 'M' mode. Sorry, I don't have this camera so can't give you any specifics to figure it out. I don't think shutter priority would work. Keep trying to figure out manual mode.

I haven't used thst camera. All of these super zoom bridge cameras are very similar. If you don't need the built-in ultra zoom lens then look at mirrorless aps-c cameras like the Sony A6100, Fujifilm X-T200, Canon M50, and others.
Is it still worth it? I mean it was released about 6 years ago so it it outdated now and are there some other newer models available now in the same budget? Or is it still good?

What's your goal? What type of photo/video stuff do you want to do? Both cameras have tiny sensors inside similar to what's in smartphones these days. Consider stepping up to a camera that can exchange lenses like the Sony A6100, Canon EOS M50, or Fujifilm X-T200. If you really want a long lens in a small camera then the SX740 HS is a lot easier to carry around compared to this HX400V...
How is the auto focus?
The af is my first priority for me.
Don't expect much from a contrast based system like this. Look for a camera that has on-sensor phase detect.

I've never used Panasonic bridge cameras, but the Sony apparently has some type of issue with its zoom lens. I don't know how widespread it is (search on E:62:10 error). Assuming the Panasonic doesn't have any issues like that it might be a better option.

I don't keep track of these types of camera and don't think any new ones have been released for years. They are all probably similar enough to get something decent given what they offer (tiny sensor with a long optical zoom lens). The only brands I'd consider are Sony, Panasonic, or Nikon.

If you want something like that, contact camera companies and ask them to provide equipment to TH-camrs that you like the content from. I do what I can with the limited access I've been able to get at my local shop.

You make very good informative reviews I watched a review of the B500 a very good review do you think this camera could make a better job than the 1300D
The 1300D appears to be a DSLR. I would rather use a DSLR over a camera like this unless I needed the long range lens and couldn't afford a telephoto lens on the DSLR.
@@ScottJWaldron yes you are right the telephotos lens on the DSLR cost too much money but what I mean is if taking photos with both cameras which one would be a better job cause the 1300d is an entry camera
@@yoichifranck3023 The 1300D has a *significantly* larger imaging sensor in it compared to this (APS-C vs. 1/2.3" sensor). It records something like 12 to 15 times more light than this camera. I haven't used a 1300D, but I would expect it to get you much better image quality in general.

Yes, anything is possible. Good quality compared to like professional music videos? Nah... This has a tiny 1/2.3" sensor and "slow" small aperture lens. It can work but it won't look anything like a larger sensor camera with a large aperture lens (like getting blurred backgrounds and such).

In my opinion the only decent use case for any camera like this is the large optical zoom lens for a relatively low cost. Don't expect amazing image quality comparable to an interchangeable lens camera with a large sensor and quality lens.

I have such a camera and after the warranty the error 62:10 appeared. The lens stabilization was damaged, just like hundreds of thousands of other users. SONY refused to repair it free of charge, and it is clearly a manufacturing defect. I decided to take the camera to the service center, but I know that they replaced the lens with another, refurbished one. Although they did not officially inform about it, I know because the previous one had a minimal mark on the casing, the replaced one - not anymore. I am disgusted with SONY's attitude. The company turned its back on its customers who bought this model, so I will never buy any model from SONY again.
How does the image quality compare to nikon d3300,

A bridge camera like this with its 1/2.3" sensor is closer to the image quality of a smartphone than a DSLR.

I've used an RX10 series camera ( th-cam.com/video/oZv0E8QtQi8/w-d-xo.html ). That seemed pretty decent, but they are really expensive. There is no getting around physics. Long zoom range needs either a big lens and big sensor, or a decent sized lens and tiny sensor.

I'd take a DSLR like the canon 1500d over a camera like this, but it really depends on what lenses you can get. The benefit of a camera like the hx400v is convenience of that built-in lens.

This camera store allows me to record videos there, I don't own the shop.
I live in Japan, They have this model only in Japanese Language.
Cameras usually default to a home language, but have a selector to change it. Maybe this one doesn't. Try to find a store with a display unit you can look through the menus to see if there is a setting.

@@ScottJWaldron, I am into more of the Bridge Cameras. I bounce around doing railway, Military and Veterans events and what ever the photography clubs decides. I usually run with Lumix and Nikon. This camera seems like it will perform well. ,

In the top results I'm seeing pages on the RX100 and this camera. Certainly a bad situation for buyers. I'll at least put a link in the description to the search result. Sorry, things like this are something I had no knowledge of when making the video and don't take into account given the video's intended goal (hands-on info and opinion of that). I also don't have data on how widespread or inevitable it could be. Throughout my use of digital cameras since ~2002 I've had a number of them experience mechanical failures (the Pentax K-5 "mirror flop" problem, *ist DS and K-7 back dials acting up) and had companies offer recall servicing (Nikon D600 and D750), so it's something people will potentially run into sadly.
Indeed, it bit me with this camera after 5 years. Royal pity, getting it fixed costs more than half the price of the whole camera... I've moved to a Sony Alpha in the meanwhile, and image quality wise there's no comparison, but I still miss so much the huge zoom and the integrated GPS (it worked really well, why the hell don't they include it anymore even in quite pricey cameras, the bluetooth GPS smartphone connection is soooo cumbersome...). This camera model has more than 8 years, but it stll stands so well . Apart for this nasty apparent planned obsolescence thing :(

Your channel name says "vlogs". Maybe you should consider a Sony A6100, A6400, or Canon EOS M50 instead. Those cameras would be much better for vlogging and they can grow with you unlike a camera such as this. At least try to find a camera that has a screen that can face the lens so you can see what the camera is recording when you are vlogging. Personally, I wouldn't consider any camera that doesn't have "phase detect" autofocus or "dual pixel" autofocus on the sensor for vlogging unless you intend to vlog in manual focus.

Cameras like this have a small sensor like what smart phones have. If your expectations are low and you want something compact with a large zoom lens then maybe it's an option for you.

The 1500D has a sensor ~15 times larger in surface area than this cameras. MUCH MUCH BETTER. Looks like that is called a T7 in the USA.

I see, that's too bad. No idea if the fuzzy look would be some issue with your camera or the nature of these tiny sensor bridge cameras. Camera companies have been making these for decades now and honestly I don't think a whole lot has changed image quality wise. Especially within the last 15 years or so. A few companies like Sony are making similarly styled fixed lens long zoom cameras with 1" (type 1) sensors but they are pretty expensive.
