    Hey everyone! In this video I take a look at Sony's top of the line superzoom camera, the DSC-HX400. As Sony's successor to the DSC-HX300, the HX400 adds several new features. Features that I myself have thought should have been implemented into its predecessor. Keep watching to find out what I personally think of this camera.

    Thanks John for an excellent overall review on the Sony HX 400.
    Buying a bridge camera or any camera is never easy as I have discovered and I am up once again for the research of the next best camera (pricing is a factor as well) to use for my artistic creative works as well as my animal natural therapies work.
    My needs are for a camera that is easy to use, allows me to take reasonable pics in low light, has optical stablisation (no blurriness) and also allows me to photograph reasonable movement (horses) as well really good close up shots (fur and other features).

    Great review! I have been using this camera for 2 yrs now for filming aricraft and all my videos. Amazing sharp photos/videos!
    Long zoom of 1200 mm. Just wonder if Sony has a new upgraded HX series camera with 4K, high speed filming, much longer zoom and more!! Thats my wish list! Come on Sony time for a new HX model!

      I just bought this camera, very pleased so far. I think Sony should take on board your suggestions-I would also like 4K video (plus slow/fast motion) & a longer optical zoom too! The 1200mm is great though and even the 'clear image' zoom is decent quality in good light. Enjoy :-)

    The feature where you can tweak the auto-zoom directly on the lens manually is simply amazing, I think I'm choosing this one just because of that. I had a Canon SX530HS that I sold and bought a DSLR. Although a DSLR is great at night and indoors, I miss my all in one 530HS everyday, it's not fun riding a motorcycle to shoot with a big DSLR and a lot of lenses. I just have to buy another, I even stopped going out alone at weekends because I lost my small super zoom camera. But I used to lose many shots because the auto-focus kept going to the wrong place, and DSLRs are so nice because you can change focus so easily, and this one is like that in the lens. Not to mention the good price.

    Hi John. Iv now watched your review now four times ( it’s a age thing lol) what a truly informative review. I’m not never have been or will be a photographer.but this year reaching the grand old age of 65 i decided to purchase a good camera for taking good close ups of models that I make ( another age thing) I had it in my mind that if I purchase a good expensive camera ie. a Nikon..I would truly get good close ups.....em....but in my case that was not the case. Not only would I need a expensive camera but I would need all The lenses that would be needed to go with it....which I would never be able to use....and more importantly I could not justify...any way first saw the Hx350 in my local shop and could not believe just how good the close up image was....I then come home and come across your video....which even I can understand...I’m glad I did because if I hadn’t I would have purchased the HX 350.... iv purchased the HX400v because..of the WiFi ..fitted and didn’t know about..and I do use on most of my shots ( bigger screen better for old boys) ...many thanks John....of course I will subscribe to your channel..never ever to old to learn...Dave..

  • @greggismyname

    John, great review as always. You gotta love Sony for taking features away that previous models had, just to "re" introduce them in a newer model. My HX200V has both the LCD viewfinder/LCD proximity sensor as well as GPS Tagging. Along comes the HX300, minus both of those features, and then the HX400V with "new" features... the LCD viewfinder/LCD proximity sensor as well as GPS Tagging. They are usually working on two models ahead, so it's as if they said... "OK, look, we'll add a 50X zoom to the 300, but there won't be much more for the 400, so lets do this... lets strip the 300 of the LCD viewfinder/LCD proximity sensor as well as GPS Tagging so we can "re" introduce these "features" in the 400, and those sorry suckers will have to upgrade cameras again!" Sure the 400V has some new features over the 200V including the multi-purpose hot shoe (and others), but bringing back the features of the 200V tells me they should not have left the 300 at all. Great marketing plan for Sony while leaving a bit of a bitterness in my mouth. Thanks for letting me vent!

      I hear you! Its one of those "What were they thinking" moments when the HX300 came out. To be honest, I think they lost ground with superzoom cameras. They need to do something a lot better with their next update.

    Bought my first SLR in Nairobi 45 years ago. Then came a long period of point and shoot digital cameras. Headed back to Africa (Okavango Delta) and chose the Sony DSC-HX400 to get some good game shots. Feeling a bit overwhelmed by the number of options. Can you walk through two sets of custom settings one might use for a couple of situations? I could then use them as a place to start and come up with my preferred custom settings. Just a thought.

    One slight possible flaw that I have noticed with my HX40V, is that if you take a panoramic photo, then switch back to take a 'normal' photo, the camera doesn't seem to like it, and the next image taken will be blurred and out of focus. In my case, I have to take a wasted photo, before being able to take the chosen photo. It is probably something that I am doing wrong, but thought that I would mention it anyway.

    Hey John, I love the review and your channel. I have a question about the focus, which is that I used to shoot aircraft on final approach (2,000 feet in the air, no extreme zoom needed) with the Sony HX300. I always used the manual focus on the 300 by half-pressing on the shutter button. Is the same option of half-pressing the shutter button to manually focus available on the HX400?

    This was uploaded ages ago but I'm thinking about getting this camera for nature and action photography purposes. I'm 13 years old so I think a camera like this would be good for starting out as i want to become a professional photographer. Does it have a good focus when zoomed in all the way? And does the camera lense get scratched easily? It would really help me out if someone were to let me know before I spend 2 year savings on it! Thanks xx

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I would always suggest trying it out at a store before you buy it but like a lot of lenses, it can be easily scratched if you don't take of it but you can also mount a filter on it to protect it from scratches. It does have very good focus in good lighting conditions but slows down a bit when its dim.

    • @adamabele785
      @adamabele785 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think this is a good camera for starters. The zoom is good for animal photography. If you want to catch a bird in flight, you need to make multiple photos and the cam does it, but it is slow to process. So the next series takes some seconds and the bird is gone. So you can do it, but it is not realy an outstanding cam for rapid actions. The cam allows to mount filters, so you can use the ring for protection. The focus is good in the range of optical zoom, but the quality drops beyound 50x magnification. The cam is not very good in zoomig in on insects on the ground. The range does not allow you to use zoom on close objects, so you need to zoom out to small focal length and go nearer to the object with the cam to get a foto of the motiv which covers the whole foto. On the other hand you have quite a versatile camera with lots of ablities, you don´t need to change camera lenses, but you might find the limitations when you go to extremes. On the other hand you can learn from this camera to find the right cam with the right abilities when you want to get a professional camera equipment, which can easyly cost five or ten times the amout of this camera. A beginner can have lots of fun with this cam and I do recomend it.

    I dont know why but on the nex f3 and on this one he forgot to mention focus peaking ...a big feature that wants me toupgrade from my hx300 it shows you a line around the subject thats on focus , also the direct manual focus is very important if you want fast focus that you can adjust manually after it does auto focus...faster than switching the switch and moving the camera at doing so...also theres a button near the shutter that zooms the image to tune the focus without really zooming the original

      I meant depending on what you have the switch on, you can use it for three types of functions. Either to zoom in, direct manual focus (DMF) where the camera will autofocus but you can turn the focus ring to tweak it if you like and just plain manual focus.

Also the videos are good the only bad thing about this camera is that you can’t export your videos thru an app like canon and the quality has to be MP4 but its not terrible quality 👍

      Hi Paula. Thanks for the compliment! =.D I would personally prefer the HX400 over the Fuji. Mainly because the Sony has a rechargeable battery rather than using double A batteries on the Fuji and in terms of handing and low light performance, the Sony one would be better.

    Hi, how about the speed of shutting? Are those good fast shutter speed if you compare HX300 and HX400? How about others brands? For me most important now are:
    Fast Shutter Speed, Good Performance on low light, nice zoom.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its very capable of shooting fast shutter speeds up to 1/4000 sec and shoots at 10 frames per second. Low light performance is pretty decent and is slightly better than the HX300. Not sure about the other brands because I haven't tried them.

    What settings should i keep in my hx400v?.
    Image quality:- fine or standard?

    • @xOogieBoogie3x
      @xOogieBoogie3x 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's just for the display. Fine increases the resolution and sharpness, but uses more battery. For video if I remember, the setting pertains to higher sharpness and image processing at the expense of image stabilization. Really good for bipoded long exposure type shots; use standard if in motion.

    Hey, John. Thanks for the review. I was wondering how the 400V compares to the A6000 in producing Bokeh effect. I know that having the smaller sensor won't help; but, I'd just like to get an idea of the amount of the difference. I'm trying to decide between the two cameras. Thanks.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its sort of hard to give you a direct comparison without actually showing you the images side by side but it is capable of getting the bokeh effect especially if you have a lot of separation from the background, plus you're if you're shooting more on the telephoto end on the HX400. That's also the same case with the a6000. While it is easier to get bokeh, it also depends on the focal length, aperture and the sensor size does play a role in it too.

    • @dougjolley4849
      @dougjolley4849 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JohnSisonPhotography I have ordered an HX400 and it should arrive today. Here's how I see it: Clearly the A6000 has some advantages including the larger sensor and the ability to change lenses (potentially to get a wider aperture so as to improve bokeh among other things). However it also has some disadvantages. I see the HX400 as being a basic "walking camera" that will likwly satisfy about 98% of my needs. As I use it, I can determine whether getting the extra 2% is worth the expense of SUPPLEMENTING my HX400 with an a6000 or other DSLR. (Not REPLACING; but, SUPPLEMENTING.) Regardless of which way I go on that, I think that the HX400 is a must-have.

    @pureblood08816 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know it might be comparing apples and oranges but between the DSC-HX400V and the DSC-HX50V which is a better buy. If the 400 is 150-200 dollars more expensive then the 50V are the features on the 400 worth the cost? I am moving abroad for a considerable amount of time and see myself as an amateur photographer who is getting good at the basics like framing and composition but still requires auto help on more advanced technical features.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      For your uses, the HX400 would probably be the better way to go because of the added controls and having that viewfinder comes in very handy, especially when you have trouble seeing the LCD screen in bright sunlight.

    Hey, can you tell your opinion about which one is a better camera for my use, Sony DSCHX60V or Sony DSCHX400?
    Wishlist:
    -High quality photos even when the target is moving.
    -High quality video, rather 1080p or better, even when it's dark or target is moving.
    -Easy to use, but not too easy(more than couple options, for example timelapse, or Wifi options)
    -Would prefer a Wifi connection, or a some kind of quick image moving connection to smartphone or computer.

    Hi John, im starting on photography. I am new to camera ownership, and i have shot with the incoming models predecessor the HX300.
    What differences are there between this one and its predecessor, how much is retained on this one from the outgoing model?
    is the incoming camera a full DSLR (A sony Alpha), and would using the outgoing model be a good choice for a first timer?
    there's another thing i wanted to know, what differences are there between the outgoing camera the HX300 and the DSC-HX10VB? lastly what category does the DSC-HX10VB from sony fall into?

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The main difference between the HX300 and the HX400 is that the HX400 has built in wifi, NFC, a hot shoe and GPS and a better processor offering slightly better noise performance and overall image quality. The HX400 is not a DSLR but a superzoom camera. The HX300 is still a good choice for someone entering the photography scene. It has a decent amount of features for someone to learn the ropes. To be honest, I'm not too sure about the features and functions of the HX10. Its a very old model. The HX10 would have fallen in the high zoom compact category.

    • @stevenjordan3839
      @stevenjordan3839 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ok, thank you for explaining that. the HX400 i wouldn't have enough confidence yet, or experience to use.
      so its not a Sony Alpha the incoming model, its a superzoom.
      I personally liked the HX300, its very helpful to first timers. I was recommended to use it by my local best buy.
      the HX10 is a high zoom compact cybershot which i figured out earlier today, its very old and gets about 9 functions, not sure about the scenes.
      between the incoming camera (the HX400) and the outgoing one (the HX300), for a first timer would you go with the outgoing model?

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steven Jordan If I was on a budget I would get the outgoing model but if you want the latest and greatest and the WiFi capabilities, the HX400 is the way to go which is the one I would recommend.

    • @stevenjordan3839
      @stevenjordan3839 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will keep that in mind, i actually am on a budget, the outgoing model is acceptable in my case.

    • @JohnSisonPhotography
      @JohnSisonPhotography  9 ปีที่แล้ว
