At the lake: A summer day with the Panasonic FZ300
มุมมอง 83หลายเดือนก่อน
A hot, hazy summer day afforded me the opportunity to put the Panasonic FZ300 through its paces shooting nature photography and video at the local lake. By using my best settings, I managed to capture a great blue heron and several other birds in stills and on video in scenes that included wildflowers and landscapes. Not wanting to leave while my photographic luck was good, I stayed the entire ...
Is the Sony DSC HX400V good for nature photography and video in 2024?
มุมมอง 256หลายเดือนก่อน
I've been shooting nature photography and video with the Sony DSC HX400V for seven years. Still, I had a question for myself: was it still good in 2024? With all the improvements in digital photography, you might think this old war horse would be ready to retire. I took the camera out to a lake on a bright, beautiful, summer day to answer my own query. I invite you to answer the question for yo...

A great horned owl mobbed by crows
มุมมอง 1344 หลายเดือนก่อน
The crows were making a heck of a racket as I entered the forest and headed up the trail. I knew they were mobbing an unwelcome visitor to their part of the forest. I followed the crows' voices until I found their unwelcome visitor - a great horned owl up to no good, probably there to rob a nest. The crows called out nosily and flew close to the owl, and he showed concern and even fear, but the...

Is the Sony DSC HX400V Good for Bird Photography and Video in 2023?
I have the HX300V, love it for moon shots but sadly it has had the E62:10 lens error a few times and repaired a few times while under the extended Mack Warranty I had bought. I can still use it for moon shots with a tripod or wide daytime shots otherwise the lens will shake around. I guess the lens harness cable give out..... I guess it is a hit and miss on the different Sony cameras......
Sorry to hear about the lens problem. Sometimes I wonder how long mine can go on. I've had it to a long, long time in digital years. All the best.
Your voice is way too low in the mix, it is being drowned out by the music.
Very useful! Thank you
Tq sir ....nice pics
I have one for my job and took it out recently. The zoom actually leaves a lot to be desired compared to my canon powershot. I have to get a lot closer to the birds than I expected to.
thatch real nice 👍
Thanks. All the best.
Beautiful nature and excellent bird observation footage. A big LIKE from Singapore! 👍👍
Thank you. All the best.
Which one you found better fz300 or hx400v ?
The fz300 has better video with 4k. The hx400v has a longer reach, which is good for birds. Both need good light, as all cameras do, but the fz300 has a faster lens, although its best sharpness is f4. Both are older cameras but the fz300 has that 4k video. Good picture quality on both. Better focusing on the fz300 if you use flexible spot. I don't like the modern dancing spots of the default focus on either camera but prefer to set the focus point myself. All the best.
@@carlreader8939 Thank You
Thanks for the nice video. I love your sense of humor. The HX400V is my favorite bridge camera. And I have several different bridge cameras between Sony, Canon, Nikon, and Lumix. I enjoy comparing them by taking the same picture and seeing the different results. Overall, the pecking order of what I have is, Sony HX400V and HX300, Canon SX60 tied with Lumix FZ70, Canon SX50, Nikon P510, P530, Lumix FZ200, Canon SX540, SX530. I wish I had such editing skills. Is there an app or program you used?
Thanks for the kind words. That is quite a list of cameras. I'd need ten fingers on each hand to use them. I have Microsoft's HD Movie Maker Pro. Movie Maker comes on Windows and then it costs about $10 U.S. to upgrade to pro. It's all I really need. All the best.
How did you take these photos, what settings did you use? I have this camera and I’m really struggling with macro photography, and help is appreciated. Great video!
Thanks for the kind words. This video might help: th-cam.com/video/Mx_t3Ftc46A/w-d-xo.html. It takes lots of practice. All the best.
wish i had a camera like this for nature photography....this is still worthy
Thanks Carl for this excellent video! I use the dsc hx400v and I enjoyed it! Have a good day from Canarias islands 🏝

Can you make a video about how to take clean macro shots with this camera ? I also have one !
@@sushiunion7380 Here's one I made some years ago. th-cam.com/video/Mx_t3Ftc46A/w-d-xo.html
Good morning. I really enjoyed this video. I like this camera a lot. I want to start birding as a hobby as I live on a farm with lots of of birds. I looked at many camera options and think I will take a serious look at this Sony, perhaps even the mk iv. Thank you for sharing your experience with this camera, All the footage and calm way of presentation,, music and humour. Convinced me that this camera will be the best option for the cost of buying a complete outfit. Kind regards from South Africa.
Thanks you for the kind words. I hope you have fun with the camera and it suits your needs. All the best.
I wish there were a means of an external monitor. Because my bad eyesight.
Just boght this camera from second hand, its my first camera. Thanks for the tips
You're welcome. I hope you like it. All the best.
Thanks to your videos . I ended up getting an dsc hx350 wich is exactly the same as the 400v but without wifi and nfc . Your tips have helped me get some amazing shots of local wildlife . The watercolour picture effects works brilliantly with the pictures ive taken at the local beach .
Great to hear. All the best.
What are you shooting this with?
Panasonic ZS100
THIS IS MY CAMERA !! ------- IT CAN DO THIS ? ------OMG
Carl, can you help me? I have this exact camera. When I use digital zoom, the photos come out grainy. When I use optical xiim, I cannot get very close. I know its not bc the distance is too far bc I used to have a Sony dsc80 and I took the same photos, from my window to a birdhouse and those were sharp as a tack. I reset the camera to factory settings, bought a new batter and memory card. but I just can't get sharp images . I even bought a tripod and handheld shutter release but still can't get good sharp images. I have it on intelligent but it seems to be pretty dumb. or I am.
It seems like you tried hard, but the problem might be with the focusing on intelligent auto. The modern default focusing has those silly dots moving all around the screen looking for what to focus on. You might try moving the mode dial to P for program, which is still an automatic setting but allows you to change some settings. Try changing to flexible spot focusing. Press menu - camera -page 3 and choose flexible spot for focus area. You'll see an orange square in the middle of the LCD: you can move that with the wheel on the back of the camera to what you want to focus on. Set the focus spot by taking a picture or pressing the button in the middle of the wheel on the back of the camera. Press the button again and the focus spot changes to orange and you can move it again. I know this sounds complicated but once you get it, you get it. Also try to shoot with plenty of light and a fast shutter speed. I hope this helps. Let me know how it turns out. All the best.

I live in west Texas. We were supposed to get between 80 and 90% eclipse. All we got was clouds. It did not get any darker here.
It was an epic failure in lots of places. Lots of hype. I guess we can't blame the sun and moon, though. Stay well.
tulips from Amsterdam ?
Originally, yes. But in Pennsylvania now. Stay well.
@@carlreader8939 you to
The main reason I use that camera is it is so much lighter than carrying a DLSR and a long lens. It is decent at taking pictures of fairly static objects, but it isn't good for bird in flight photography. Another downside is it can't do proper macros. So long as you can live without those two things, it is a good walkabout camera.
Thanks from Buckingham, Pa. New to Photography and just purchased the a6100. Great info.
You're welcome. It's a great camera. We must be neighbors. I'm in PIneville. All the best.
You say choose L, there is no way that I find L, please, if you can be more clear with your lessons, thank you

nice one , don"t they pair for live ? its going to be a interesting family , the hx400v still gives good picture"s , thanks 👍

I love your videos, Carl. I have this bridge camera(HX400V) as well. You are inspiring me to go out in the Colorado Rockies and take some photos this spring. Your videos are a nice breath of fresh air on TH-cam. Those last 2 photos of the eagles were real gems! Cheers!
Thanks. Those last two photos were gifts, or kind of. If you go to Colorado, let me know how the photos turn out. All the best.
Here again. I try to understand your macro setting as good as I can. It is not clear to me what type of setting you apply which appears on the lens, a fisical switch on the left part of the lens with 3 positions. What you explain is inside the menu where all the options are, but i am talking about the switch outside the lens with the 3 types of AF modes, please, let me know, greetings to Pennsylvania from Germany! Alfredo. ps. I noticed that your video is made with a medium resolution however, the macro pictures look great, it seems to me that watching them in 4K those pictures must be looking much better or?
Hello again. The switch on the left side of lens is for fully autofocus on top, manual focus assist in the middle and manual focus on the bottom. I mostly use full autofocus. The middle option, manual assist, allows you to fine-tune focus. Also, you might try flexible spot focus (menu-camera-page 3 focus area) to be more exact. You can move flexible spot to the are you want to be in sharpest focus. TH-cam generally changes the video to HD but the photos are shot on fine, so I don't know how that changes things. All the best in Germany. I hope that helps.
@@carlreader8939 of course it helped a lot, thank you very much for your great work you do for us
