i really like how in spring yard zone act 2 there are two goals and if you jump at the right time you'll get to the good one with a lot of rings. that's pretty cool.
as this may not be a speed run by any normal means, it is still rather interesting to watch! even showed an old sonic fan some secrets i dident know about! ^_^
Read description more carefully, it's tool assisted. Plus, Knuckles isn't in there in Genesis because the original data didn't have his colour avaiable. *heard from other gamers* He might be a bonus character probably. (The heart's a signature)
Mrules4ever: This is for entertainment purposes, not bragging rights. It's even stated in the description: "Tool Assisted - these games are played using a emulator at super slow speeds and save states. The goal is to provide entertainment by showing off game glitches and beating the game as fast as possible. - Aims for fastest time - Takes damage to save time - Ignores delays caused by bonus effects - Abuses programming errors in the game" Right from the description. Read before mouthing off.
It's an integer math "bug", where the rightmost position == the leftmost - 1. There's supposed to be a safety preventing the player from doing that loop, but since he is moving so quickly, the computer cannot keep up to calculate the safety point, and thinks that Sonic (or Knuckles in this case) is at the rightmost part of the screen, therefore the camera scrolls there quickly.
@FergusonGames super knuckles IS in it. you just have to enter a cheat but you DO have to have all 6 emeralds AND you transform but your appearance is invincible with speedshoes
Knuckles is very overpowered in Sonic 1 even without glitches and cheats. Spin drive, flying, wall climb, jump on enemies head to boost up gaining access to the top of map.
@WTFWereTheyThinking The No Way thing: hold A+B+C to get a special stage. " Obviously its because the game was too old for expanding on." Sonic & Knuckles came out 3 years after Sonic 1, same platform [Megadrive/Genesis] - the reason it didn't work, from what I heard, had to do with palette issues, nothing to do with game age.
right I understand, I speedrun in real time and TAS sonic games of all times. I think a tas run show the limits of what a game is capable of, and is thus a work of art in itself. Though not necessarily a display of skill, it's not a practice that should be looked down upon.
@glyncr84 To find out how fast the game can be beaten when everything is perfect. It's really a huge challenge to make a good optimised TAS. And in the making you get to learn a lot more about how the game works, which you otherwise wouldn't know if you played it on console. It's a nice hobby to do, just as any other hobby.
You should know that I'm never kidding when it comes to Sonic stuff.;) If you don't have a Genesis/Mega Drive console anymore (I assume you at least had one before) you can still get a hold of it. The game is an unlock-able game on the "Sonic Mega Collection+" game that exists to PS2, GC, X-box, PC and maybe some other console that I don't remember.
Possible reasons for being unable to play as Knuckles: #1 - Tails wasn't even there yet so people would get angry about that #2 - The game seemed too old when Sonic 2 and 3 came out #3 - The palettes (maybe)
@ProtoSnake Disregard cjetson's answer. Sonic & Knuckles had a slot on top of its cartridge which allowed you to insert an older Sonic game and play as Knuckles. Google it if you want to see what it looked like.
lol, that music that comes on when you've only got 10 seconds to get out from underwater always scared the shit out of me as a kid. I always panicked and basically gave up if I died because I was too scared, lmao
In retrospect it seems like when Knuckles is used in the original Sonic the Hedgehog it seems like the stages have been modified in order to guide the echinda through. Like because of Knuckles gliding ability and that he can climb up walls and stuff he can go to special places within each and every stage that Sonic cannot access (even with Tails assisting him) because Tails gets tired very quickly I never played as Knuckles in part one even though I wanted to what is the code for choosing him?
Fun Fact: SEGA was planing on making this the original lock-on of Sonic 1 & Sonic and Knuckles but there many bugs that they couldn't fix. So they scrapped it and gave us blues spheres instead
I love how some of you don't understand when he says "tool-assisted" in his video. He modified the game. Nothing happens if you put Sonic 1 onto the Knuckles cartridge. I should know, I owned it.
Have you considered that he hit a shoes item a little before the invincibility? I didn't check how far afterwards the battle began nor do I know how long it's supposed to last, though, but he might've still been under the influence of the shoes.
actually the Sonic and Knuckles cartridge has an insertion on the top where u can add Sonic 1, 2 or 3 to the top of it to play as Knuckles. And the reason Sonic probably took longer is because he didnt have the spindash avalable^ ^
Ok a few descrempencies here. 1 you should have started out with a 3 lives instead of two. 2 you came through walls that in the regular game you could'nt. 3 In Final Zone those little electric balls or whatever they're supposed to be, your charactor came into contact with them without harm. But This was fun to watch none the less.:)
Actually, GuineaPigPat is right. Blue Sphere was added instead of allowing you to play as Knuckles in Sonic 1. I didn't know it was because of a palette issue. However, if you'll recall, there was that "No way!" screen that would always come up before Blue Sphere.
amaze vid man only complaint i have it that i'm rather certain that there was no spin dash (down A) in the very first sonic game. yet you use it all the time ???
Well, in Sonic 3 on, he's the only one that can use the Spin Shield (which lets him kill badniks even on the spiky sides), and he's the only one that can use the power of the elemental shields.
I now know why his lives go down. Look closely at the end of GHZ 2. He spins into the floor (dunno how) and dies, but somehow avoids having to re-do the level.
Are you familiar with the Special zones from Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles? It's a game entirely based on those kind of zones. If you're not familiar with them, you run around a big sphere trying to find all the blue small spheres, and trying to avoid the red spheres. Some of them are quite a challenge.
Lol what happened with knuckles in ghz act 2 is like the "super shoe assisted peel out at the beginning of the stage to shoot you to the end of the level" glitch in sonic cd
Cords do tend to disappear, lol. I can warmly recommend you to buy the SMC+ game, it's great fun and it's A LOT easier to take with you on trips than an entire console with cables and cartridges. ;)
DisturbedAngel, this is an unofficial ROM hack by a programmer called Stealth. Sega encountered some problems in programming Knuckles into Sonic 1 for S&K-specifically, Knuckle's colours were messing up the game's colour palette-so it never got into S&K for locking onto Sonic 1.
I agree that they're not about cutscenes, but I feel that many games today have stronger and more immersive storylines that, coupled with fun gameplay, make for a more enjoyable gaming experience for me. However, I would definitely agree that the later Sonics are no where near as good as the Genesis era Sonics.
i like how he used knuckles' individual attributes to speed through the obstacles! he has a shorter jump and neater landing right? not so keen on level skipping..pretty sick al though!
I guess this's a hack ? Normally it's impossible to play with Knuckles in the first Sonic... Anyway, this run is perfectly awesome ! I can't believe the way you use to go through the Labyrinth Zone !!
Connecting the S&K cartridge onto Sonic 2 or Sonic 3 did make Knuckles playable in those games, but connecting it to Sonic 1 unlocked Blue Sphere, not Knux in Sonic 1. This video is a hack.
If I remember correctly you were supposed to hit A+B+C+Start at the same time. Then you could choose Sonic or Knuckles and play a Blue sphere game. I'm not 100% certain on that combination of buttons though.
If I remember correctly you could get him on the actual Genesis game too. You just had to hit various buttons at a certain time. Unless that was just a rumor
Holy win at Green Hill Zone Act III...he just kinda flies over the entire stage and lands on the boss.
That series of jumps in Green Hill Zone act 3 was freakin' awesome! :) Yay for speedrun demos!
O yeah I still remember the music alright, it's the same as the game gear version
Thanks for bringing back memories, rogueyoshi
One of the best speed runs I've seen! Excellent job...and with Knuckles. :)
@MarioFanaticXV TAS timing is from the start of the game (Power on) until the last input needed to finish the game. And that is exactly 14:44.95.
That voice clip took up over half the memory in the cart XD
There are very few videos that make me say "Wow". This is one of them. Great job!
@wayney97 Genesis is the name of the console this game was made for, called Mega Drive in Japan/Europe.
This run is not using any cheats though.
Labyrinth 3 was fucking awesome. On the whole, one of the most interesting TAS's I've ever seen.
13:14 Eggman: but my trap has 10 seconds of lag...
(Knuckles broke the floor himself. lol)
hey, what program do you use to record a video like this?
They probably use a record program that doesn’t have a big watermark in the middle of the screen like filmora or a logo like kinemaster
That is damn good playing through the stages, I give you props
i really like how in spring yard zone act 2 there are two goals and if you jump at the right time you'll get to the good one with a lot of rings. that's pretty cool.
Knuckles is there because Chuck Norris allowed him to be there :P
as this may not be a speed run by any normal means, it is still rather interesting to watch! even showed an old sonic fan some secrets i dident know about! ^_^
i dont care what people think, this certainly does take pure skill, this had to be redone thousands of times for the fastest time possible
i love it.
Its official; you are a god at this game.
Well done.
@JonmanOwnsYou I agree. The sonic series had one of the best soundtrack of all games on the old consoles (nes, snes, sega, etc).
Man, I love Starlight's music.........also, EPIC WIN IS CONTAINED IN THIS VIDEO.
Always loved the backgrounds on sonic games :D
@trival1993: He slowed down the game and made savestates all the time, then whenever he made a mistake, he went back to the previous savestate.
i don't think you could do this any faster. really great job!! wish i had this emulator version. and skills too xD
I loved your Green Hill Zone Act 3 speedrun where all you had to do was hop everywhere and land PERFECTLY on the boss.
You've got the sprite on.
But holy shit, Knuckles on Sonic 1!!!
Very nice
Read description more carefully, it's tool assisted.
Plus, Knuckles isn't in there in Genesis because the original data didn't have his colour avaiable. *heard from other gamers*
He might be a bonus character probably.

Right from the description. Read before mouthing off.
for directx games, i capture with fraps, but some emulators have built in video capturing.
Man, unlike Sonic he really doesn't chuckle...
It's an integer math "bug", where the rightmost position == the leftmost - 1. @FergusonGames super knuckles IS in it. you just have to enter a cheat but you DO have to have all 6 emeralds AND you transform but your appearance is invincible with speedshoes
Wow I could go as far as to call that perfect, don't see any way you could possibly improve. Good job!
This is hilarious. Truly a work of art.
Knuckles is very overpowered in Sonic 1 even without glitches and cheats.
Spin drive, flying, wall climb, jump on enemies head to boost up gaining access to the top of map.
@ZAPPSOFT
Because the original version had a unique color palette, which would have given Knuckles a weird color instead of red.
@WTFWereTheyThinking
The No Way thing: hold A+B+C to get a special stage.
" Obviously its because the game was too old for expanding on."
Sonic & Knuckles came out 3 years after Sonic 1, same platform [Megadrive/Genesis] - the reason it didn't work, from what I heard, had to do with palette issues, nothing to do with game age.
@ZeroKenshin no,if you combine Sonic 1 and Sonic & Knuckles there will be the NO WAY screen. This game is a hack for emulators.
right I understand, I speedrun in real time and TAS sonic games of all times. I think a tas run show the limits of what a game is capable of, and is thus a work of art in itself. Though not necessarily a display of skill, it's not a practice that should be looked down upon.
man guys, this is a person who played supersplow to provide entertainment, stop trying to make him feel bad.
It's 14:45 in game time, the play time doesn't include the intro nor the ending sequence. Only the parts between the first possible input to the last.
nice video playing Knuckles in sonic 1 will be fun i hope.
I love how at the end of the second Marble Hill game, Knuckles gets impatient waiting for the score to finish adding up. LOL
Whoa! Green Hill Zone in 0:56 total. Great Speed Run!
I could listen to Starlight zone music for hours... I really love that song
I bow my head to you, oh awesome Sonic 1 with Knuckles player!
Btw there is a new TAS and a no zip one aswell.
You should know that I'm never kidding when it comes to Sonic stuff.;)

lol love 12.55 smart comic timing!!
@ProtoSnake Disregard cjetson's answer. Sonic & Knuckles had a slot on top of its cartridge which allowed you to insert an older Sonic game and play as Knuckles. Google it if you want to see what it looked like.
I don't care whether or not this is legit. This video is hella awesome O_O
Hack or not, this is just pure awesomeness =D
lol, that music that comes on when you've only got 10 seconds to get out from underwater always scared the shit out of me as a kid. I always panicked and basically gave up if I died because I was too scared, lmao

nice vid man, Knuckles the Echidna rules
I love how some of you don't understand when he says "tool-assisted" in his video. He modified the game. Nothing happens if you put Sonic 1 onto the Knuckles cartridge. I should know, I owned it.
This is why I adore knuckles..
I always loved the music from Spring Yard Zone. :D
@thesonicsisters2 This TAS didn't use any cheats. Only abuses flaws in the game.
Have you considered that he hit a shoes item a little before the invincibility? I didn't check how far afterwards the battle began nor do I know how long it's supposed to last, though, but he might've still been under the influence of the shoes.

Try again *Throws the emerals back and forth from hand to hand* ^_~ lol
Awesome play! 5/5
Well, I'd be MORE than happy to drink all of that coffee!! :D
amaze vid man only complaint i have it that i'm rather certain that there was no spin dash (down A) in the very first sonic game. yet you use it all the time ???
S&K lets you play as Knuckles in Sonic 2 and 3. However, when you put Sonic 1 on top of it you get the Blue Spheres mini game instead.
This is awesome!
Well, in Sonic 3 on, he's the only one that can use the Spin Shield (which lets him kill badniks even on the spiky sides), and he's the only one that can use the power of the elemental shields.

You can do the speedup with knuckles in this?
Thank you!
Great video, by the way.
hahahaha! good one!
my favourite zone is starlight zone! the music is awesome! :D
It's a edited/hacked rom but this version is approved. Because there is no new glitches others than the original.
Lol what happened with knuckles in ghz act 2 is like the "super shoe assisted peel out at the beginning of the stage to shoot you to the end of the level" glitch in sonic cd
just plain amazing
C00L! I wanna play as Knuckles in Sonic 1 as well!
Cords do tend to disappear, lol.
I can warmly recommend you to buy the SMC+ game, it's great fun and it's A LOT easier to take with you on trips than an entire console with cables and cartridges. ;)
Where are you getting 14:44.95 from? I got 7:51, and the timer doesn't have any decimal places in it.

Green Hill Zone Act 3...
That...
Was Fucking Beautiful.

Please don't say that the rerecord count is what I think it is. If it is, then that guy either isn't human, or has PHENOMENAL patience.
I guess this's a hack ? Normally it's impossible to play with Knuckles in the first Sonic...
Anyway, this run is perfectly awesome ! I can't believe the way you use to go through the Labyrinth Zone !!
All Knuckles abilities + Sonic´s ability to jump high. EPIC
Connecting the S&K cartridge onto Sonic 2 or Sonic 3 did make Knuckles playable in those games, but connecting it to Sonic 1 unlocked Blue Sphere, not Knux in Sonic 1. This video is a hack.
i remember the debug on the genesis version....takes me back...
Fact is Stealth (the hacker who made it) ported the Knuckles code from S2&K so it's as close to the real thing as you can get.
If I remember correctly you were supposed to hit A+B+C+Start at the same time. Then you could choose Sonic or Knuckles and play a Blue sphere game. I'm not 100% certain on that combination of buttons though.
at this rate you might make a world record for this game seriously
"Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis" is the name of the GBA port of Sonic the Hedgehog that allows you to play as Knuckles.
@spanky407 you dont program a tas. you play the game in frame by frame and use savestates. there is no programming involved.
In which version can you use Knuckles and/or tails in SOnic 1?
you're wrong, you could only but sonic 2 or 3 on this slot, if you put in sonic 1. you could only play the bonus games of sonic 3
If I remember correctly you could get him on the actual Genesis game too. You just had to hit various buttons at a certain time. Unless that was just a rumor
