I'd dig a new story where Hyper Sonic A C T U A L L Y has a big role on the history, not that now they're selling the Super Sonic transformation like the actual Super Saiyan, which was actually annoying for me ESPECIALLY on Forces (Classic Sonic, Sonic and the "Rookie" against the fricking powered Phantom Ruby Death Egg Robot, when on Mania, C.Sonic had to struggle to beat Eggman and the Heavy King). I'm starting to feel Super Sonic as a j o k e.
@@justarandomguy378 Considering that Super Sonic doesn't seem as Super as he used to, Hyper form would be a very good idea. Personally, I think they should have worked it into Sonic Forces, but obviously they are ignoring the very prospect of how they could simply say that Hyper form was too draining to sustain for too long, due to inexperience with Chaos Transformation. Thus, using just Super form, which is significantly less draining on stamina, is more efficient, so it happens more often. Plus, you need the Master Emerald to activate the Chaos Emeralds' Super forms, and trigger Hyper form. The Master Emerald never leaves Angel Island, unless it's been broken somehow, and Knuckles is trying to reassemble it. Using that logic, they could make the final battle of a new game take place near Angel Island, which would allow Sonic and his friends to use Hyper Form to fight the Big Bad.
I just now noticed how Sonic’s emotions look in the different forms In non-super mode he looks pretty normal, cheerful and happy to be there In Super mode he looks determined, like he’s in a rush to get something done But in Hyper Mode.. he knows he unstoppable, he knows he can’t be killed or stopped, his power is limitless and he knows.

He has all the perks of Super Sonic, but also a double jump, which also counts as a screen nuke, and can't drown underwater. And combined with the Electric Shield..? I gotta go back and play this game
Correction.Hyper sonic doesn't have a double jump,it's a flash attack (or something like that idr) that let's sonic launch himself in any direction you choose.

@@GameApologist But if the chaos emeralds transform into the super emeralds then they could still technically exist in the modern games. It's just that Sonic hasn't made them transform yet.
Is everyone ignoring the fact that the chaos emeralds have had the appearance of the super emeralds, only smaller, ever since S3&K? It's the original chaos emeralds that don't exist anymore.
@@butcherax I've always wondered if the sonic team has ever realized that lmao. Sure you might argue that the emeralds are facing the upper facet but you can tell that the gems have taken the super emeralds shape, even if not the size. I feel they could have explained it by saying that they only hold the hyper power and size when docked emeralds are paid together with the chaos emeralds, together with the island.
Funny thing is, they could’ve said that the super emeralds were temporary, as in you over charged the chaos emeralds and eventually they would go back to normal and would have to be over charged again to gain the hyper form.
Another reason we don't see it in other games is because the creator of dbz got mad when sonic got a new form for his super state and tried to sue which kinda almost worked until Sega just said they'll never use it again, which ironically enough ultra instinct came out and looks similar to hyper sonic and let's be honest if hyper sonic was called ultra instead of hyper db would've deada** used that name hyper instincts sounds better than ultra too so yeah if db never said that we'd probably see hyper way more

Sonic Team: Sonic 3 and Knuckles combo isn’t canon. Me: I realize the council has made a decision, but given that it’s a stupid ass decision, I’ve elected to ignore it!
I chose to believe, according to Sonic Mania, which is now in Classic Sonic's canon (what do you mean it's not the same classic sonic, shut up sega, you're stupid, can't even make a canon right), once the Super Emeralds were used, they turned to rock and let their power go again in the form of Chaos Emeralds. Basically, yeah, a one-time thing. I also believe Metal Sonic is canon, therefore Sonic CD is canon, despite Mania not claiming so. Not because I like the game, never played it, but it makes more sense, given that I kinda ignore Modern Sonic.
From what I understood and by understood I mean how I interpreted the Mania 'elevator' scene at the start of the game.... Sonic 1, 2, 3+K and CD were all canon.... seeing as Christian Whitehead is now Sonics adoptive father I chose to believe that's the official canon for 16bit Sonic and nobody, NOBODY!!! will change my mind not even Sonic Team themselves!
I've been sayinh this a long time! Everyone repeats the seizure thing, but everyone I know with epilepsy is like "it uhhh doesnt". I think it's one of the things people repeat and never question. Look up the Hyper Sonic 2021 generations mod. The guy made the color cycle slower than the original and it still looks good too.
AND THIS IS TO GO EVEN FURTHER BEYOND HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
People don't understand that for colors to cause seizures you don't have to just stare at them change. It has to change super fast between 2 colors. And Hyper Sonic flashing isn't fast enough to cause seizures.
6:01 "...a story of growth, overcoming weaknesses" *literally too powerful to land on that spring* "...and discovering your full potential was so much greater than you could have ever imagined" *still can't land on the spring*

@@coppershortsword1990 Ouch. It's been a long time since I played at this point, but back in the day I recall having trouble with 2-3 particular special stages. It'd probably be worse today, since I'll have gotten both old and rusty.
@@JediMB I’ve been playing sonic 3&K since I was around 2 years old, I’m 20 going on 21 here soon and they’re still incredibly hard to me. Idk how these speedrunners do it man…
My head-canon is that the Super Emeralds pull a “Mewtwo Strikes Back” ending: whenever someone finds the emeralds and uses them to go Hyper, they erase everyone’s memories of their existence afterward. They’re just too OP, people like Eggman would abuse their power if they weren’t kept secret.
Now that is a cool theory, and not too dissimilar to what we see on Sonic Mania: the Super Emeralds, once their power has been ultimately used, become grey and dull again, they transform into cracked rocks. They release their chaos energy, which channels into, once again, regular Chaos Emeralds. But you can't refine and stabilize them again. The rocks are there, in the altars, and they can't be restored. It was only a one-time power. It doesn't erase memories (or maybe they do, idk), but it's a nice explanation as to why we can't go Hyper again.
@@Playerofakind there's another way to avoid that. A complete redesign of the form that would be less likely to cause seizures or have no chance. Though you're likely right about why hyper is no longer possible.
@@ArtisChronicles especially when alot of fan stuff(ie hyper sonic mod in brawl and sonic rpg) make the design a more silverish (or shiny light)blue with a good bursting with energy aura(kinda like ssj2 with its sparks of electricity) boom perfect redesign (also wouldn't be suprised they stopped hyper sonic because of that one pokemon ep with porigon)
My headcannon is the Super Emeralds were charged up version of the Chaos Emeralds. When Mecha Sonic drained the Master Emerald in Sonic 3 the super emeralds had to give up their energy to make the Master Emerald work again
I mean, that is literally the canonical explanation for the Super Emeralds, that they're charged up versions of the Chaos Emeralds empowered by the Master Emerald. As for the Master Emerald being drained, it wasn't. The whole point of both the Chaos Emeralds and the Master Emeralds is that they're a source of infinite energy; you quite literally CAN'T drain them of their power.
I’m pretty sure that the Super Emeralds, and by extension, Hyper Sonic, are still a thing, they just haven’t faced a threat big enough to justify using them. Not counting the Time Eater, they didn’t have the time needed to get the Super Emeralds in that scenario.
Something I really liked was that if you were playing as Tails and collected the super emeralds, he finally got his own super form. Then in Sonic Mania, Tails could go super using just the chaos emeralds, and even though Super Tails wasn't as powerful as it was in S3&K, the fact that Tails was able to use the chaos emeralds at all shows how much he's grown!
Heh, this reminds me of a headcanon I've had for a long time: Sonic 2: Sonic learns how to go Super using the Chaos Emeralds. Sonic 3 & Knuckles: Sonic unlocks the Hyper form, but only while he's on Angel Island, as it's been saturated in Chaos energy thanks to the Master Emerald's presence. While he has access to this form, he learns how to perform that midair 'flash' as both a dash and (thanks to said Hyper form) a screen-filling instant attack. Sonic Adventure: Remembering what he learned from using the Hyper form, Super Sonic can now utilize a relatively weaker version of the 'flash' move - that field he gains once he reaches top speed as Super Sonic during the final battle against Perfect Chaos. Sonic Adventure 2: During the final battle, Super Sonic can now boost on command to attack, though it's still not particularly fast. Sonic Unleashed: Sonic has now learned how to utilize the Boost without having to go Super, and spends this entire adventure improving it (aka the game's EXP system), increasing the ability's speed and how efficiently he utilizes the chaos energy inside him. Beyond Unleashed, his experience with Boosting has peaked, and he remains in top form in all Boost system games - as seen when he defeats Perfect Chaos once more *without* having to go Super. (You could probably handwave his lack of Boost in Lost World as the Lost Hex messing with his now-natural connection to Chaos energy. =D)
I respect the canon of the series now. I thought it was dumb inconsistent and messy because the developers kept on rebooting the series to appeal to a bunch of different demographics and genres, but now I actually like the canon now. Thank you for enlightening me.
Also add vusual changes: After prolonged acess to Super form, Sonic gains Green Eyes in his normal form, signalling his body's overall adaptation to the Chaos Energy and mastery of the power it gives. All while his Super Form gains Red Eyes, which might mean future growth at some point. Hell, maybe one day Sonic will be capable of transforming to Super Form without rings? Wait a moment, he already can! Sonic 06. Holy crow.
A Thought: The factors that differentiate Super Sonic from Hyper Sonic are the rapid color change effect, the shimmering stars, the visual trail, all of which are sort of superfluous visual effects, and then the inherent burst or homing type attack. In later versions of Sonic games, I believe Sonic just has this attack as part of his Super or even non-powered form. One could argue, if they were a raging nerd, that Sonic just sort of acclimated to the Hyper Sonic powers and they just became part of his standard form or Super form. That is, the meaningful differentiating factor was adopted into the lower level forms and the superfluous visuals were just lost. I say superfluous in sort of a functional manner. Hyper Sonic looks dope, the rapid color change effect being the best part.
Super Sonic has never had the Hyper Flash in any of the games he's in, even compared to modern Super standards I'd argue the ability to instantly kill every enemy on the screen is incredibly powerful.
@@evdestroy5304 Light Speed Attack (which also hasn't made many appearences) is pretty similar, also considering that the machines in Modern era are almost certainly a lot tougher than in the Classic era (because otherwise stuff like Egg Dragoon would be 1-shot by Modern Sonic), that flash might not even do much, unless it was Modern Hyper Sonic, in which case all enemies should give up yesterday.

I could just say that super isn’t canon because it’s an add on in forces and people don’t even mention super they just mention the chaos emeralds. Your using the intro of the mania to speculate about hyper not being canon when the 1 2 3 &k was an Easter egg as well and the characters were only running around some weird dimension which doesn’t appear in the game of the story
But one can still get hyper Sonic by playing only Sonic and knuckles on it's own. So hyper Sonic is cannon .. And sky sanctuary zone is in Sonic generations too

@@jamiewilliamson9829 Really? This video mentions them saying the full Sonic 3 & Knuckles adventure isn't the canon iteration of the story. It was after all the plan all along until production costs of a cartridge with so much data became an issue. I'd be mad about the whole splitting the game in two thing, but Knuckles in Sonic 2 was such a novel idea that I just can't be. It's a shame that weren't able to get it working for Sonic 1 as well. Sky Sanctuary is indeed a great representation for "both."

Well said. Hyper Sonic was amazing, as was the ability to get Super Tails and Hyper Knuckles via the super emeralds. It truly was one of the most profound gaming experiences of my childhood.
I never really cared about Hyper Sonic but this video gave me a new outlook on the seizure-causing hedgehog I wouldn't mind it coming back but i hope they wouldn't drive Hyper Forms into the ground like they did with the Super Forms in the mid 2000's
BlastProcX No it is possible. Flashing lights can indeed cause seizures, also the flashing of the screen when he uses his instant shield screen nuke attack, as well as the after images. Those who are prone to seizures and epilepsy can be effected by it.
XxMurderer 7xX Guess it depends on how epileptic a person is. I have a friend who is prone to them but can play sonic game easily. Even the special stages. I think Hyper Sonic is on another level due to the fast rainbow color changes.
BlastProcX, despite the cracks, they look the same as before the power was restored, perhaps they cracked with age, as no one had used the Super Emeralds power in so long they deteriorated, but may be implied that they will be restored some day. That day being Sonic Mania which may have been intended to have the same process done like before, going to the Master Emerald chamber to jump on each Emerald to play the 2nd set of special stages. But never happened, Hyper Sonic is underrated.
Hyper Sonic is one of my favorite aspects of Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Finding out there was a form even more powerful than Super Sonic blew my mind back then. The flashing colors of his fur, the sparks of light emanating from him, the afterimages he leaves when moving, and the fact that his double jump acts as a mini-scream nuke and can’t drown made him this beacon of overflowing power not of Sonic’s world. I would kill to see the Hyper forms make a comeback in Mania 2.
10:26 What if over time they eventually changed back into Chaos Emeralds, and as a side-effect of that reverse transformation they left their Super Emerald shells behind resulting in those cracked Super Emerald shaped rocks?
Actually, The chaos emeralds left the super emerald form in sonic mania, then traveled to different special stages in sonic mania. The chaos emeralds left stone relics of the super emeralds
That would have been pretty cool to have Hyper Sonic be apart of the story more. Instead of saying "it doesn't exist " or "It's not canon" (even though to get the Super Emeralds are formed due to the Master Emerald bestowing power to the Chaos Emeralds which Sega never said the Emerald couldn't do but whatever lol) they could have stated that Knuckles doesn't allow that kind of power unless nessesary or just say that Super Sonic is good enough to handle most foes (which it is). S3&K is apart of the main timeline at least to me. The Sonic Franchise kinda had a lowkey story going on in the classics and pretty obviously in the 3D games. The narrative starts to wane either after Shadow or Unleashed. All the games before had on going narrative which can be followed if you're paying attention. Like how in SA2 last stage Cannons Core has Lost World/Angel Island imagery with the snake slide and the Master Emerald shrine the further you go. Calling back to S3&K and Adventure 1. Stuff like that can really give you a great experience with the gameplay. And yes Hyper Sonic is very awesome. ^_^
Y'know, it's always miffed me that the undrownable Hyper transformations are only accessible in the half of the game that's completely absent of drowning hazards.
Kinda comical he should mention Disney Star Wars while discussing arbitrary dismissal of quality worldbuilding material. Yaknow, on the subject of a franchise whose current owners can't keep a cohesive story straight...
I'd always assumed that Hyper Sonic was basically just a bonus feature for combining S3 and S&K, that when it was one game, there was only supposed to be 7 emeralds and that's it and you'd have to collect those emeralds across the entire game, perhaps with four emeralds in the first half and three emeralds in the second half to collect. But when the game was split, Sonic 3 needed to have all 7 emeralds because just getting 4 emeralds and not unlocking Super Sonic would piss people off after being able to unlock Super Sonic in Sonic 2 and of course having a cutscene at the beginning of 3 that showed the Super form. Of course, Sonic & Knuckles also needed 7 emeralds. Of course, once the game was released in two parts but with the ability to combine them, you'd suddenly have 14 emeralds so the combined Sonic 3 & Knuckles would need to either space out the collection of the 7 emeralds (perhaps by only having one ring per level up to Lava Reef to find) across the game as originally intended according to the hypothesis above, leave the special stage ring location layout as it was, allowing for the possibility of players gaining access to Super Sonic before the midways point (it's been a while since I've played but I believe it's actually possible to collect them all before the end of Hydrocity), potentially making the entire second half of the game a god mode run once the player collected 50 rings or, as what ultimately happened, take the emeralds away at the halfway point and make the player collect them all over again. Simply taking the emeralds away after working so hard to collect them would annoy players though so Sonic Team came up with the concept of the Super Emeralds and the added bonus of Hyper Sonic which had the invincibility and speed of Super but also added the double jump/instakill move. But given how much work was put into to making the super emeralds important, it may be that their inclusion was their intention from the start, back when it was one game. After all, the process of collecting all fourteen emeralds does unlock the Hidden Palace cutscene, it gives Sonic his aforementioned hyper form, also gives Knuckles a hyper form and gives Tails a super form (which makes Death Egg's final boss a breeze incidentally thanks to those super birds). In any case, I loved Hyper Sonic. I understand not including that transformation in later games though. The Super Emeralds are basically just super-charged versions of the Chaos Emeralds and to unlock them involved collecting the Chaos Emeralds twice. No 2D game since Sonic 3K has been large enough to justify collecting 14 emeralds (though Sonic 4 came out in two parts and if it had been possible to combine those games it may have been nice to include Hyper in that) and the 3D games have typically relegated finding the emeralds to story cutscenes. Other than some bonus unlockable in a future Mania-type game, I think the only way we might see Hyper Sonic in the future will be story cutscene based. If we assume that the Super Emeralds are really just the Chaos Emeralds in full power mode, connected to the Master Emerald then there could conceivably be some future story scenario in a game where Super Sonic isn't enough to save the day and Sonic needs the combined power of the Chaos and Master Emeralds to defeat Robotnik, thus unlocking Super Sonic for the final battle. Man, you think you're obsessed Hyper Sonic, look at this wall of text. :D
Not so sure the argument about number of chaos emeralds applies here - it's possible to get seven emeralds just in Angel Island Zone alone (iirc) and also all seven can be got in Mushroom Hill Zone alone.
@Joe Gardiner: I think there may have only been about 5 or 6 Warp Rings throughout Angel Island Zone (3 in Act 1, 2 or 3 in Act 2), and 3 in each Act of Mushroom Hill Zone - but I'm not certain without Googling it up... Still, the fact that Sonic Mania Plus had an extra 7 Special Stages in the coding means that *SEGA* _could_ have included some explanation for a Hyper Sonic transformation, but told Christian Whitehead to scrap the idea...
I've thought about this stuff for a while, myself, and I love how they created a sort of storyline with Sonic and the Emeralds. Sonic 1, you only find six of them, but it is clearly shown they are of magical importance. Sonic 2, you find all seven and unlock your own super amazing magical abilities and get to try them out. You do _not,_ however, get to use that power to save the day. You merely keep it away from evil's clutches. Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic has had time to fully grasp the Super power, has it ripped from him, fights to get it back, does so while gaining _more_ power, then goes on to _use_ that power to actually save the world. Maybe the "Super Emeralds" were depleted or broken afterward, maybe not, but I love that they had that sort of unspoken story going on with the early games. I'm okay with at least the 3D games not having Hyper Sonic, as I genuinely doubt it would translate as well given the...uh...nature of them.
@@oluwafisayomiomojola1275 that rarely happens, it was really because the color were changing kinda too fast and they didn't want keep up with transformations like any other Japanese cartoons.
I remember I had bad withdrawals when I realized that Hyper Sonic wasn't featured in any game post SNK&3, that actually semi dulled my hype for the Super Sonic path in SA1 because I felt like he wasn't at full power.
I don't understand why it's so hard for Sega to keep the super emeralds canon. Just observing how they function in the games, it isn't difficult to include them. To start, note some things: -How the chaos emeralds get upgraded in S3&K, by placing them on pedestals in a master emerald shrine around the master emerald, where they grow much larger -The huge size of the chaos emeralds in Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 when they're resting on pedestals in the master emerald shrines, compared to their normal size in all other scenes It's my personal theory that, with their size being the main tell, the chaos emeralds we see in the aforementioned sonic adventure scenes are in fact in their super emerald form, being in a place most in tune with the master emerald. Sonic/Knuckles must have re-awakened their potential by restoring them in S3&K, thousands of years after they rested in harmony with the master emerald in Tikal's time. I doubt there's anyone at Sega that cares enough about this kinda thing to re-consider though, despite how simple a thing this seems to me. Anyhow, great video my guy. I don't normally deep dive into something as nebulous as the canon and lore of Sonic the Hedgehog, but it's videos like this that get me in that mood.
@@joshualowe959 and there were 7 dragon balls before 7 chaos emeralds there used to be only 6 chaos emeralds although i don't think super dragon balls really matter in this case because you could make the argument that the super emeralds are a rip off of the namekian dragon balls both really large and have way more magical properties

I mean Iizuka’s most defining quality is his ability to take something with a lot of potential and just carelessly throw it into the trash can. There are tons of ways you could have kept Hyper Sonic canon without needing to bring it back every now and again. My preferred solution: save it up for REALLY big threats or high stakes. If you were willing to copy a few of the best parts of Dragon Ball in the first place, then why bother pretending you aren’t and just go ahead and borrow one of their best excuses for fan-service transformations: use a transformation that’s appropriate and proportionate to the challenge in front of you. They were practically doing that in other games like the storybook series, why not continue that with what’s essentially “better Super Sonic?” What better way to build up how much your new antagonist of the week is a threat than by throwing in Hyper Sonic and the Super Emeralds in there? You don’t want to overuse that you say? Just explain in-universe that it either takes too much time or Chaos energy to convert the emeralds into their Super forms or whatever. But noooooo, Iizuka’s main excuse? “We just don’t want to resemble a particular anime too much, lol.” Bull. Shit. You have Super Saiyan Sonic, hedgehog Vegeta (they’re actually trying to make Shadow MORE Vegeta-like somehow, so that’s some very consistent “logic” right there), and hedgehog Trunks, and seven magical miracle granting objects of nearly limitless power. STOP PRETENDING YOU WERE NEVER TRYING TO COPY DBZ AND JUST EMBRACE IT ALREADY! Go all the way with it, maybe even parody it at times if you want, JUST BE BOLD DAMN IT! But with Iizuka still in charge, I’m pretty confident that “bold” is the last thing the modern Sonic franchise will be for a good while. They may tease boldness like they did with Forces, but as always they tend to fall just short when it comes to following through with a promising creative idea.
But why even take his word in the first place? He oversaw (and by my assumption greenlit) Sonic Forces, which was so terrible in writing, that it not only had to retcon and ignore a bunch of established lore to justify the baseline of its shitty story, but also wasn't even able to be consistent with its own supervened rules for the Phantom Ruby.
Iizuka is a blight on the Sonic franchise but the moment he'll go, we'll end up with Kishimoto as a director and Zavok replacing every character of the franchise.
there's an even easier way to keep it. Non canon but un-banned. I they make it just a post game bonus to have fun and explore the levels, it's enough for alot of people. The biggest problem that nobody seems to talk about when it comes to this design is rather the rapid color changes and flashes. It would make sense and be fair if the real ban reason was beause of epillepsy.
@@renookami4651 That could theoretically be a reason why, but the whole rapid-flashing issue is also a very easy problem to solve. Instead of rapid flashing, make Hyper Sonic white with a glow that gradually shifts between the colors. Given the color choices of the original iteration of Hyper Sonic (very pale colors), it seems like white with color-changing glow was probably what they were going for in the first place, but that's difficult to do on a 16-bit console. The flashing in itself was almost certainly done solely because animating smooth, gradual color changes is *very* difficult and often tedious to do on that kind of hardware. So fuck pretense, let's just rapidly cycle the colors.

The Super Emeralds are actually acknowledged in the Encyclo-speed-ia in the story blurb for Sonic & Knuckles. Both it and the Sonic 3 sections story blurbs basically go with the whole Sonic 3&K Combined narrative. And since Adventure acknowledges Mecha Sonic, Generations has Modern Knuckles acknowledge Sky Sanctuary, and Mania acknowledges the Super Emeralds too. I think it's safe to say that the Super Emeralds and Hyper form are indeed canon overall and that their first and only appearances were just a one-time thing. And since Sega HAD to have been looking over Flynn's shoulder as he was writing this, to the point where only the most innocuous mistakes and flub ups managed to get through. Yeah, I think we can trust the Encyclo-speed-ia. ESPECIALLY since it acknowledges the Japanese plot for Knuckles Chaotix as the actual story, and specifically mentions the American plot as "Lost In Translation".
Personal lore idea: When Sonic returned the master emerald. The super emeralds had to use their power to repair/heal the master emerald. Leaving the grey stones. And the chaos emeralds are the broken off, original power like how they used to be.
You know, I actually made a personal lore similar to that. It happens after the credits. Hyper Sonic flew off the Tornado to make a truce with Knuckles, as the rest of the adventure had been pretty crazy after Sonic and Knuckles realized that they were on the same side. So he flew back to Angel Island, and made it to the Hidden Palace. They shook hands and everything, when Knuckles heard a cracking sound coming from the Super Emeralds. The transformation had officially worn off, and the Chaos energy flowed out of each emerald and materialized back into the normal Chaos Emeralds. They floated down in the same circular pattern that they did in Sonic 1 and at the start of the Sonic & Knuckles part of the game. They then floated there for a moment, and then launched off in all different directions. They traveled to the next special stages, I guess. They went somewhere, idk. Knuckles had failed to harness the Master Emerald's power all his life, as explained in the video, but Sonic did it correctly, first try. That's why the grey husks of the Super Emeralds remained. Knuckles: The Chaos Emeralds are back. So does that mean the Super Emeralds are... gone? Sonic: Sort of. Sonic then motions to the grey stones that are all of what remains of the Super Emeralds. At this point they look like they do in Sonic Mania. Grey _and_ cracked, which would explain why they're not just grey or not there at all. Sonic had now unwillingly lost his ability to go Hyper, and though it took Tails a second or two to realize that Sonic was stuck on Angel Island, (he hates water, obviously, so he can't swim back) eventually, Tails returned and the canon continues on as normal. It's short, and not the best, but at least it fills in that plot hole. Sonic has tried multiple times in between games to reactivate the Super Emeralds, and they do light up... for a second. But then the chaos energy escapes from the cracks and re-materializes back into the Chaos Emeralds. So in theory, if Hyper Sonic were to return, Sonic (likely with Knuckles's help) would need to seal the cracks somehow.
Fun fact: Ian Flynn was going to add Hyper Sonic in Sonic Frontiers, but backed out on it, it would have been awesome to hyper sonic in a modern setting

I just love the "I'm unstoppable" aura Sonic gives off when near a ledge in Hyper-form. Arms crossed, chest puffed out...gives you that chill when Gohan went SSJ2 vs Cell. @9:22 if you folks need a example...
You know, if they wanted to walk back the “super emeralds” they could simply link it to the plot of sonic unleashed. Have it be the opposite of the drained chaos emeralds, seven supercharged chaos emeralds controlled by the master unlocking a hyper-sonic form. The layers of conditions would make it rare, while keeping it epic. Maybe require Gaia, or whatever, lens additional power to a chosen hero
hyper sonic was originally was gonna be in sonic mania but sega didn't allow it so the mania team had to remove it [in the mania assets you can see the hyper sonic texts and other stuff]
If I may throw my own headcanon: I always believed that the reason why Hyper Sonic never came back (before this stupid retcon) was that Sonic went too far in attaining a full transformation. Like, that Hyper Sonic was so utterly ridiculously powerful, that it did him more harm than good. And that would be my explaination as to why Super Form has had slight alterations in style. Because, like Super Saiyan, it needed to be mastered in some sense. However, I also think in my headcanon, Hyper Knuckles should have been kept to a form exclusively for Knuckles, to basically show Sonic still has a lot to learn, and Super Tails could still only be attained by Super Emeralds until Mania.
Personally Knuckles was always my fave and loved the little details of his transformation. Like the little fangs he gets when changing and how his dreads grow longer.
RayAreReviewing there were a couple of places where it was more of a liability. Usually if there were a series of jumps that had to be timed just right.
@@tradne85 I don't think this is true, as it offers a great degree of control over your movement with relatively little learning. You always have the ability to cut any jump short by dashing straight down and have absolutely no left over momentum or dash straight up to save yourself in most situations and skip one jump altogether. If you still needed to keep it in line with the timing of regular jumps, one jump and upwards dash correlates to the timing of three or four consecutive normal jumps depending on your dash timing. There's moments where his speed can go out of control a bit but like I said, you can always come to an instant full stop by jumping and immediately dashing straight downwards.
Awesome video!! I remember when I was playing this and with my brother sometimes, and when I got the final Super Emerald as Knuckles, I excitedly ran to my brother who was on the phone and wrote on a piece of paper to show him, “Hyper Knuckles is in action!” 😁 Fantastic game...!
"And of course that means hypersonic will never appear in another game. Which also means we're never going to get any dope merch. EVEN THOUGH THAT'D BE A SICK NIGHTLIGHT." Sega: I smell profit from this man's brain...
Love this! I love being Hyper Sonic - the colors, the way Sonic himself looked, the after images, the energy sparks. Plus, the way you described the purpose of this milestone for character development is awesome!
Great video! The narrative growth of aquiring powers in videogames is super important and you highlighted it very nicely! Every retcon & every inconsistency just makes me wish for a rewriting of the whole series, not to erase stuff, but to reorganize the good stuff into a complete cohesive story
I'm with you. I know it's loose enough that they probably don't need to, but even a more defined history of Sonic's story and world would be nice. It's been long enough and they still can't completely commit to a canon.
Takeshi Iizuka doesn't want to commit to a specific storyline. Why do you think that so many games have been made non-canon, despite the games selling well? It's because he's not trying to build an overall story, he's literally flying by the seat of his pants every time he's asked to make a new game! Plus, Sonic has become MUCH TOO SELF AWARE lately, as he's referencing his own games by name, breaking the Fourth Wall, and generally being a Meme. He's making Sonic too Woke, so soon he'll go Broke. That's the sad part. He's ruining Sonic's entire franchise, because he has no direction, no goal to achieve.
You know, I’ve been a sonic fan for most of my life and that love never faded. However, I grew up with 3D sonic games. I had beaten most of them but I just couldn’t beat the original 2D games. So I clicked on this video just so my modern fan self could understand just what Hyper Sonic was. Now that I know, I’m ashamed that I never took the time to earn it myself. I’m also mad that I now know why a modern fan would never learn about this form since it’s not canon. Sorry to upset more diehard fans than myself. But thank you for explaining this for us. I actually just found this channel tonight so I’ve been binge watching :)
I wanted Sega to explore this mystical theme in Sonic lore as this power is a source for both natural & technology that strength their power. I just wonder how Sonic can be this overpowered.
When sonic mania was announced, the one thing that I was really hoping would return was the hyper form and super emeralds. Safe to say I was very disappointed.
i love the tale this unfolds, as a kid you get such a thrill going through everything , you feel you are constantly chasing something extra every times the game *could* end sooner, but by doing all the extra steps and keep pushing forward , the player isnt simply reward by a good ending , but the BEST ending . you surpass yourself you defeated eggman the deathegg is no long ( for that momment anyway ) you chased eggman *THOUGH* space and a cloud of meteorites ( i mean, how much more badass can you get on top of one of the most iconic super tensed music ?!!?! ) you destroyed eggman's machine , TWICE , finally get the master emerald, it gets brought down to the island. the island goes up flying in the air and finally you get rewarded by a end screen with dolphins and birds. i mean come on, what more do you want ??

@@daviddavis1085 Well understand my response came out of a defense of how people USUALLY react to us fans of Adventure 2. We love both Classic and Adventure games with an equal amount of love, and yet almost everyone else in the fanbase will devour us for even saying Adventure 2 is one of the best games I'm the series. And not many people who claim their favorite game in the franchise have that problem, yet it's a problem for those who love SA2. So that's why. I will say this tho, Sonic 3 and Knuckles is one of the few games in the series I would put up there with SA2. It really is that awesome a game
And see me to am a bigger fan of SA2 than of SNK3. While I adore the retro games with a passion SA2B was just too huge when I was a preteen. The Chao garden, getting S rank On every mission.. The best of memories man.
@Cup of Swing Master Emerald : Yo kids shut yo asses up Why im saying this is because Master Emerald has infinite power and infinite power means infinite speed too.
Hrm, I would say that the main reason that Hyper Sonic wasn't really followed up with was that Sonic games, post S&K... kinda stopped being about Sonic. Adventure is more of an arc for Tails and Amy than it is for Sonic, with the resolution coming from Tikal & Chaos. Sonic just happens to be the best guy there when all the chaos emeralds are together. Adventure 2 is Shadow's story, and probably comes the closest with actually requiring the Master Emerald to distribute its power to both hedgehogs; Sonic, again, just happens to be meddling and the best guy for the job. Heroes same kinda deal, 06 focuses on Silver and Elise more than anyone, Unleashed comes close but chooses to focus heavily on Chip above Sonic, and by Colors the tone of the series has shifted to the point where Sonic's far more of a silver age comic book hero than wanting for any kind of arc. I'd argue there's less been a shafting of Hyper Sonic than the fact that the series just hasn't needed him, Super kind of being thrown in out of obligation because Sonic happens to be there in a Sonic game. Advance would've probably been the place for it, but that was very focused on finding Sonic's gameplay footing in a post-Adventure world more than finding any deepening of the Sonic lore (Cream basically existing as a gameplay function). Still, I really appreciated this look at the character. Seeing it as the culmination of Sonic's growth over three games and as the reward for a player looking not to just BLAST PROCESS through but to explore Angel Island and learn more about the Sonic world is really refreshing and the kind of thing a lot of games should strive for. And yeah Mushroom Hill the best, it just does exploratory Sonic so well. Really glad to have stumbled across this channel, please keep up the good work, looking forward to diving into your vid backlog!
I dunno about this one; I mean without a doubt you're right that the coming games tended to involve a much wider cast of playable characters, usually shrinking Sonic's role in the process, but they always made it clear by the end who the real star was. In Adventure 1, he's the only one who can go Super and go toe to toe with Perfect Chaos in probably one of the most memorable fights in Sonic's history. In 2, his dynamic with Shadow is arguably the brunt of the story with everyone else serving supporting roles at best. Who goes Super there? Sonic and Shadow only, once again. Heroes? Team Sonic are the only ones who fight Metal Sonic's final form, and EVEN among the whole team, only Sonic goes Super once again. The other two just get put in some bubbles. Colors shifting the tone is 100% correct though, things really haven't been the same since. The biggest chip on my shoulder's always been how overcentralized the Super mechanic comes off. Sonic and other hedgehogs not named Amy are the only ones allowed to go Super in any game past S3&K (except Mania); even IN those games, Super Tails and Knuckles can barely even be considered forms. Sonic's whole color scheme changes along with longer, spikier quills and kinda sports a different attitude than his base form. It FEELS like a transformation. Tails' and Knuckles' transformations feel like tack-ons in comparison, the one or two times they ever happen. They just kinda glow a little bit and get an afterimage. Everything else about them is the same (barring the Flickies in S3&K). And put bluntly, in Mania they're extras and well...like he mentioned in the video, S3&K exclusive things like Super forms for anyone but Sonic Shadow and Silver are non canon. So basically for me, when Super was already enough to more than handle any threat Sonic has faced and they gave him a SECOND even flashier, bigger transformation while the supporting characters get pretty much nothing, I'm not too broken up about the Hyper thing being dropped. It felt like a step over what was called for given the surrounding story and characters. Cool bonus though!
Man, I'm a huge fan of Sonic. S3&K is the first ever game I've played in my life and it's my favorite one. This game represents my childhood and I'm really glad to see that there's people talking about it to this day. Finding your video today was amazing and I really hope you keep up with the good work! Greetings from Brasil!
I remember seeing Hyper Sonic as a Kid and thinking I would never be able to play as that form because I sucked at the Genesis games. But when I did a run of Sonic 3 and Knuckles and had to make a choice of Giving up the Super Form or just keep going with the Adventure as is, I made an effort to get Hyper Sonic before I reached the end of the Game and it felt amazing being able to have Hyper Sonic I doubt they would bring it back cause Sonic Team doesn't want to put forth the effort of making you put the effort to achieve such a great form but, maybe someday we'll see it come back
It's that and mainly due to people getting seizures altho they could just make alternate versions of the games but add hyper in them. Plus just add seizure warning
This was always how I felt too. When I got hyper Sonic unlocked, none of my friends ever believed he existed until I had to show them. In the end in my childhood book Sonic 3 with Sonic and knuckles is the true classic and epic Sonic experience.
Given one thing i read where Naka got the idea for Super Sonic from DBZ cause Goku had gone Suoer Saiyan right around that time in jaoan, thats a load of shite
Yeah, it's pretty obvious where super Sonic comes from. And also that the floating island owes a lot to 'Laputa, Castle in the sky'. It's honestly not a huge surprise when one form of media references another. Even if those references are less obvious overseas...
Not to mention, Takashi Iizuka saying that Super form is exclusive to male hedgehogs, not unlike how it was presumed Super Saiyan was exclusive to male saiyans.
Its not because they "didnt want it to be like Dragon Ball", thats ridiculous. Their reasoning was that they wanted to avoid the power creep problem most shonen anime of that kind suffer from, where the main character keeps getting new forms and abilities that make the old forms obsolete and less cool. They wanted to keep it to a simple, single god mode.
I honestly never knew Hyper Sonic wasn't canon. I just thought Sega didn't care about it, but what you said makes sense. Cool video, man. Gave this Sonic fan some real food for thought. Keep up the great work.

I just now noticed how Sonic’s emotions look in the different forms
In non-super mode he looks pretty normal, cheerful and happy to be there

Also, *SUPER BIRBS!*
We're all proud of him for that :)
boom yboom yes Tails is getting the Luigi treatment
So Super Tails in S3&K is now technically Hyper Tails?
my boy Hyper Knuckles is really underappreciated
Heh, this reminds me of a headcanon I've had for a long time:
Sonic 2: Sonic learns how to go Super using the Chaos Emeralds.
The Stranger I like it, very Battle of Gods end it makes sense
I had this similar theory too! Nice to see I wasn’t crazy.
I respect the canon of the series now. I thought it was dumb inconsistent and messy because the developers kept on rebooting the series to appeal to a bunch of different demographics and genres, but now I actually like the canon now. Thank you for enlightening me.
The Stranger you can also consider the flash as a very powerful version of the homing attack, a move he later practices into the homing attack
Also add vusual changes:
After prolonged acess to Super form, Sonic gains Green Eyes in his normal form, signalling his body's overall adaptation to the Chaos Energy and mastery of the power it gives. All while his Super Form gains Red Eyes, which might mean future growth at some point. Hell, maybe one day Sonic will be capable of transforming to Super Form without rings?
Wait a moment, he already can!
Sonic 06. Holy crow.
A Thought:
The factors that differentiate Super Sonic from Hyper Sonic are the rapid color change effect, the shimmering stars, the visual trail, all of which are sort of superfluous visual effects, and then the inherent burst or homing type attack.

Hyper sonic was in the files in mania but it got scrapped

You far from being alone my friend, trust me
10:26 What if over time they eventually changed back into Chaos Emeralds, and as a side-effect of that reverse transformation they left their Super Emerald shells behind resulting in those cracked Super Emerald shaped rocks?
Hyper Sonic deserves all the love and recognition and unlocking him was truly a satisfying and rewarding moment in my childhood.

@Carlos Mezquita EXACTLY💀
why cant hyper be canon again?
@Carlos Mezquita
Plus, Secret Palace still exists.
That kinda sucks cause i love the idea of a stronger form
How is this so? I've heard this multiple times but never heard why...
You deserve this reply.
The first thing I said when I clicked on this was:HOLY CRAP!!!!
I'm okay with at least the 3D games not having Hyper Sonic, as I genuinely doubt it would translate as well given the...uh...nature of them.
actually, in knuckles story in mania, the emeralds are seen cracked.

I don't understand why it's so hard for Sega to keep the super emeralds canon. Just observing how they function in the games, it isn't difficult to include them.
To start, note some things:
-How the chaos emeralds get upgraded in S3&K, by placing them on pedestals in a master emerald shrine around the master emerald, where they grow much larger
-The huge size of the chaos emeralds in Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 when they're resting on pedestals in the master emerald shrines, compared to their normal size in all other scenes
It's my personal theory that, with their size being the main tell, the chaos emeralds we see in the aforementioned sonic adventure scenes are in fact in their super emerald form, being in a place most in tune with the master emerald.

@@mkge7206 We would reach perfection.
there's an even easier way to keep it.

Personal lore idea:
When Sonic returned the master emerald.

I always believed that the reason why Hyper Sonic never came back (before this stupid retcon) was that Sonic went too far in attaining a full transformation.

EVEN THOUGH THAT'D BE A SICK NIGHTLIGHT."
Sega: I smell profit from this man's brain...
"This level deserves way more credit than it gets".
Hell yeah it does. Mushroom Hill Zone = GOAT Sonic stage and I will die on that (mushroom) hill.
"No man should have that much power."
Sonic: "Lucky to be a hegehog C="
Thanks David! Glad to be of assistance and hope you enjoy your time here!
I heard that Hyper Sonic was originally supposed to be in Sonic Mania
@@kidtalk9751 same here which makes it even more disapointing.
@@gameguy_64 I blame Izuka because he made Hyper Sonic non-cannon for no reason
Regular Kid at this point I don’t think izuka doesn’t know what he’s doing
The emeralds are still in Mania
Hey Nick, I finally saw your channel on the “Gaming Creator on the Rise” category! Great to see you moving up in the world!
i love the tale this unfolds,
as a kid you get such a thrill going through everything , you feel you are constantly chasing something extra every times
the game *could* end sooner, but by doing all the extra steps and keep pushing forward , the player isnt simply reward by a good ending , but the BEST ending .
you surpass yourself
you defeated eggman
the deathegg is no long ( for that momment anyway )
you chased eggman *THOUGH* space and a cloud of meteorites ( i mean, how much more badass can you get on top of one of the most iconic super tensed music ?!!?! )
you destroyed eggman's machine , TWICE , finally get the master emerald, it gets brought down to the island.
the island goes up flying in the air
and finally you get rewarded by a end screen with dolphins and birds.
i mean come on, what more do you want ??
“Sit DOWN adventure 2 fans” 😂🤣😂
Makes me laugh to this dayyyyy
What's wrong with Adventure 2 fans? Cause we like Adventure 2 and give so much praise? Jesus calm down
Lol you got me all wrong. I got all 150 emblems in SA2B. Shit was life as a kid on my GameCube. Just appreciated that he knew how devout it’s fan base clearly is given your perfect response 🙌💚💯
Fans: Sonic is the Fastest thing aliiiiiiiiive!
Chaos Emeralds: Hold my Beer.
@Cup of Swing Master Emerald : Yo kids shut yo asses up
Why im saying this is because Master Emerald has infinite power and infinite power means infinite speed too.
Can we make a petition to bring Hyper sonic back!? 😂
Can we make a petition to shut you up!? 😂

As an Adventure 2 fan, I loved the delivery of "Sit DOWN!" xD
But when I did a run of Sonic 3 and Knuckles and had to make a choice of Giving up the Super Form or just keep going with the Adventure as is, I made an effort to get Hyper Sonic before I reached the end of the Game and it felt amazing being able to have Hyper Sonic
I doubt they would bring it back cause Sonic Team doesn't want to put forth the effort of making you put the effort to achieve such a great form but, maybe someday we'll see it come back
It's that and mainly due to people getting seizures altho they could just make alternate versions of the games but add hyper in them. Plus just add seizure warning
He needs to be able to not die when he gets crushed and he has to be able to fly as hyper sonic,
Also no drowning
@@joshgroban5291 Hyper Sonic already doesn't drown
This was always how I felt too. When I got hyper Sonic unlocked, none of my friends ever believed he existed until I had to show them. In the end in my childhood book Sonic 3 with Sonic and knuckles is the true classic and epic Sonic experience.
They said they don’t want to use him because they don’t want it to be like dragon ball even though they have failed
Didn't hyper sonic appear before ultra instinct?
Its not because they "didnt want it to be like Dragon Ball", thats ridiculous. Their reasoning was that they wanted to avoid the power creep problem most shonen anime of that kind suffer from, where the main character keeps getting new forms and abilities that make the old forms obsolete and less cool. They wanted to keep it to a simple, single god mode.
One million views! Congrats! You've earned this!
This madlad understands this unlike Sonic Team.
I honestly never knew Hyper Sonic wasn't canon. I just thought Sega didn't care about it, but what you said makes sense. Cool video, man. Gave this Sonic fan some real food for thought. Keep up the great work.
A stellar analysis dude. There's a lot about the classic games I'm uneducated on and it's always great to learn more about them
I dumped literally 100s of hours in S&K3 in the late 90s. Hyper Sonic always held a special place in my heart and this video touched me in just the right way. ThanKS.
Fun fact, anything traveling at or above Mach 5 is considered Hypersonic.
Living Corpse
Correction, everything Above Mach 5 and beneath 100’000 km/s
Not once has he mentioned how Hyper Sonic kills every one in the screen with the double jump.
It has limited range and only works on weaklings... :) dispatch the weak ones and humiliate the strong ones... Yes :)))
I originally did, but the audio got corrupted and had to cut it. Don't worry, I have something else in the works!
