How To Catch Bass In Crystal Clear Water

  • Clear water scares a lot of fishermen but it doesn't have to! When its crystal clear there are some changes you need to make to your equipment and your lures but once you've done that, it can be some of the most enjoyable fishing you'll ever do. Don't be intimidated, learn how to adapt, and the next time you find yourself staring at the bass as they swim along you'll know what to do.
    The key to clear water is finesse. There are exceptions to the rule (mainly big baits) but as a whole you want to drop down to lighter lines and clearer lures. Solid colors and thick lines are the kiss of death in crystal clear water. However "finesse" and "clear" are both relative terms so on one fishery you might need to use 4 lb test, the next you can get away with 8 lb. Don't assume you have to go to extremes right off the bat.
    Below is a breakdown of all the methods Tim discussed. We'll include links to all of his favorite baits for clear water and even recommend a couple colors for each.

    Thanks on using plastics on cloudy days with more contrast and less flash makes sense .
    For years when fishing dark jigs i was using trailers with sparkles on cloudy days and the bites tapered off .
    Will change up my game this year from what you guys were teaching thanks again.

    This video got me thinking I would love to see underwater footage how fish react to line visibility. For example, you said you would use a 25' fluorocarbon leader for 20' of water but let's say it was only a 5' leader, would the fish react that much differently. Would be really interesting to see how line shy they really are. Thanks for the great videos.

    Great video! All of this applies to fishing in places like the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Minnesota and Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario, which has tons of lakes with ultra clear water. I found that flashy baits do still work in late spring as the fish seem fairly eager (fairly low pressure), and my biggest producer was a firetiger Rattlin Rap with 10lb Powerpro and I think a 2ft 10lb P-Line fluoro leader. A 30ft leader sounds a little excessive but you guys have way more experience than me. I will probably try a longer leader this year.
    Also, finesse fishing is basically impossible in the wind unless it's a really light intermittent breeze, so you really gotta stick to spinnerbaits and lipless cranks, and maybe topwater (if you can see the bait). I'm crossing my fingers for calmer days on my canoe trips this year (was quite windy for 7 out of 9 days last June) so I can actually use some soft jerkbaits. I will have plenty of alternatives though.
    Thanks again guys!

    I fish from shore and have found that when the small mouth roll in to the bays, the water is generally crystal clear. I've had alot of action throwing the weightless senkos wacky rigged. More than any other type of bait. I've also found that when one bites, whether or not you nailed it, that's about it. Every fish in that area will stop biting so you have to get it right on the first cast. If not, you can generally move to the next boat or dock but more often then not, you're better off moving on for a while.

  • @timothythompson2678
    @timothythompson2678 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    A tip for bank and wade fishermen, keep your distance when you first cast into an area that's near the bank. So many times I've walked right up to a spot only to see swirls heading to deeper water. And you don't have to be fishing crystal clear water. If there's just decent clarity and fish are in shallow water. If you want to cast to cover near the bank hang back and hit it from a distance.
    On another note, Tim did a video describing what colors to use depending on water clarity and sunlight standing next to his boat with the baits out on the deck. TB has a few videos with similar information, but I can't find that one again. Can you help a brother out?

    Id like to see you and Matt each fish, one with mono and one with floro and switch lines halfway thru the day and see if line type really plays much in getting more bites. Done on a sunny day in about 3' visability

    • @ScuffedEngineer
      @ScuffedEngineer 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matt says the difference only comes into effect when you're looking at like 30'+ visibility.

  • @djones4113
    @djones4113 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    What if you're bank fishing on 30ft visibility water? I use straight 10lb on spinning gear or 12lb only because we have giant stripers as well. I use tubes, drop shot, Ned's, wacky/Neko cranks/lipless or small keitech swimbaits. I notice the rapala x raps in parrot or orange work good on the smallies in my waters in the summer.

    I fish in michigan and sometimes there are lakes where you can see 20ft+ down. In my experience I have found that you don't need as much vibration and sound which may be why finesse techniques shine so much. I think all they need to do is see your bait and they don't care as much about vibration and sound.

    Good tips. I don't fish a lot of gin clear lakes, but the river I fish for Smallmouth is gin clear. I've noticed something that seems odd. When we take a drift boat out the Smallmouth will regularly follow the boat and hang out in the shadow. We throw swim baits and nedrigs into the boat shadow constantly and get bit. The fish following and hanging out in the shadow seem highly aggressive.
    Any thoughts on this? Do you ever run into that in lakes? It seems odd to me because this river is highly fished with guides running it almost daily in the summer. I'd think the fish would learn that boat shadows are a danger zone.

    • @ScuffedEngineer
      @ScuffedEngineer 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be to the point where they see it as food. You can train bass to eat out of your hand. If enough live bait is used I wouldn't be surprised if the fish have become conditioned in that way.

    • @PrestonMartin
      @PrestonMartin 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    im on super clear I just do mono.. I go through lot of line so ya. I did 4 lb.. but the bad thing when you get on a hog they can snap 4lb.. so I went up to 6. I think 6 I catch less now.. but don't lose as much.. the bad thing I don't get as many bigs now.. I might have to go back down to 4 again.. I still never got a damn topwater.. ive tried them also.. a few times ive had bass come up but either I jerked it at wrong time or bass just didn't want it.. but ya.. its annoying.. the trick I do on the rental.. is go wide on a point turn off motor.. kinda use wind also.. but then paddle my way sitting on front of boat with back to front and paddle my way in ninja style.. ive actually seen some huge fish just swim up to boat and check me out that way.. also I found them in backs of coves like that.. though I should have been stayind wide and casting in.. it was still good to do what I did to kinda learn.. I learned here anyways.. the fish hate the motor.. they will bounce right away if hear it.. if see you they also leave.. these are the big ones.. the smaller ones can care less most the time.. the strat I like though.. use a jerkbait on one pole.. tie a weightless or like a light pinch on weight.. and use robo worm senko or even real worms.. while I jerkbait around me.. and just recast the weightless here and there.. usually I can pull fish to me.. and sometimes they hit the easier weaker target then my jerkbait.. I do have two pole license though so can do it like that. one other thing that work good here though on shore its hard to utilize .. in wind on super clear water.. it will murk up the shoreline getting pounded by waves those can hold beast fish.. but ive caught a decent amount in the actual mudline separating the clear to muddy water.. I think that spot is a hot spot though from shore its harder to run it. and ya colors that do good here are green. brown. shad type colors more natural.. at night Ive had good luck with black. the wind can make the water stained/murky.. the bad thing here it gets deep so fast you cant see the bottom like in this vid.. though if there is a huge rock 5 foot down you will see it it just so deep it looks more like stained water.. I wish wasn't so deep though because when rent boat when I could sight fish some shallower coves I caught a lot more fish when I could actually see them..

      @@Austin_Torres boat is preferred but you can catch bass just regularly walking the shores especially at jenkinson lake. Try pardee lake too

    I never use fluorocarbon leaders, just braid. I catch fish, at will, in all types of water. Let's not overthink things.

      hertzer2000 and I bet if someone used floro next to you they would out fish you.... I have a friend with ur mentality and we use the same baits.... he’s on braid and I’m on floro leader... he still catches fish. But I catch 3 times more fish than him. You can think what u want.... but u could potentially be missing out on bigger smarter fish
