Ned Rig - Catch More Bass With These Simple Tips

  • After using the Ned Rig heavily this past year we've formed strong opinions about baits, colors, head sizes, and gear. Its time to revisit the topic and really break down the specific tackle that we have had the best success with.
There are a variety of "Ned" baits on the market but Tim has found 2 that really stand out from the crowd. His preferred baits are the original Finesse T.R.D. by Z Man, and the 3" Roboworm Ned Worm. Tim's best success has come on natural colors fished with the minimum weight necessary to maintain bottom contact.
Below is a breakdown of the baits, hooks, colors, and gear that we've had the best success with while fishing this Midwest Finesse technique.
    The Worms...
    -Roboworm Ned Worm: bit.ly/2j9F0Xy
Tim's Favorite Colors- Green Pumpkin, Desert Craw, Prism Shad.
Matt's Favorite Colors- Margarita Mutilator, Peoples Worm.
    -Z Man Finesse TRD: bit.ly/2hs4RtR
Tim's Favorite Colors- Green Pumpkin, Mud Bug, Smelt
Matt's Favorite Colors- Green Pumpkin Goby, Junebug
    The Hooks...
    -Z-Man Finesse Mushroom Head: bit.ly/2hs2cAe
    -Z-Man HD Lockz Head: bit.ly/2kIgRYK
-Owner Block Head Jig Head: bit.ly/2qL0A8n
    Tim's Preferred Combo...
Rod- Daiwa Tatula Elite AGS Spinning Rod 7'6" ML - bit.ly/2QHupT9
Reel- Shimano Exsence Spinning Reel 3000: bit.ly/2iMtscV
    Line- 12 lb Sunline SX1 Braid: bit.ly/2tn8EzQ
Leader- 6 lb Sunline Sniper: bit.ly/2p7fxju
    Great All-Around Combo...
Rod- Shimano Zodias Spinning Rod 7'3" Med Lt: bit.ly/2jOUXAO
    Reel- Shimano Stradic CI4+ 2500: bit.ly/2gu84t7
Line- 10 lb Power Pro Braid: bit.ly/2aFg46b
Leader- 6 lb Maxima Ultragreen: bit.ly/2ae97J9
    Bait Storage Container...
    -Plano Waterproof Stowaway 3740: bit.ly/2fvjcFB

Replacement arrived!By the way, I did forget to mention that the original lure did have a decent strike however as most anglers will attest you can get a hit th-cam.com/users/postUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 and fish will hang on and release lure. I used the replacement lure yesterday and ran thru a Shimano Waxwing, Kastmaster, Bobber (set to sink). I found the does run deep (I casting on the flats 3.5'). Make sure you adjust your rate of retrieve and rod tip angle (up) to prevent getting snagged on bottom. Used it a couple of times and action was very lifelike (looked like local bait fish for trevally), craftsmanship very good....however eyeball fell out. I asked for replacement and it is on it's way! It was very easy to change out treble to single inline hook.

Tactical is way more professional and put way more time into a video. Even from linking all the gear used in the description. Where as googang is all childish acts and humor. Unfortunately Milliken used to be about fishing but has slowly started drifting away from it.

Great video. I wanted to share this tidbit. I too use a braid to leader connection when finesse fishing. By using flyfishing leader material I can use a 12 lb. fluorocarbon leader that has a diameter as small or smaller than regular 6 lb. fluorocarbon for spin fishing. I don't know why it's a smaller diameter than regular line but it is. I'm currently using RIO Products Fluoroflex tippet in the 2x size which is 12 lb test.

The lakes I fish have a lot of weed beds and I have found that fishing the Z-Man TRD with a very light head allows the ned rig to drop slowly through the weeds rather than dropping quickly to the bottom. This seems to keep the lure in the strike zone longer and makes it a bit easier to work the lure through weedier areas. If I'm fishing an area where the bottom is clear of weed beds then it doesn't seem to matter as much.

Yes,also use them long, the more they fish the better they are.Ned Kadhe caught 85 bass on one TRD,then he turned it around and caught more.

Wow I didn't know about using this in cold, clear water. Thank you! This is my go-to bait all summer long for bronzebacks on the Wisconsin River (Thanks to guides Kurt Schultz and Brad Wirt for schooling me). Warm, stained water...and yes, Ned Rig Kicks ass too. SOO true about krazy glue gel. 1 Zman TRD will last all day. If you haven't tried it, and are skeptical about it's do-nothing design...don't worry. Yes, the ned rig might be the dumbest looking lure on the market...but it flat out catches fish. Also agree about the big TRDs...I would use something else other than that. Great video, guys.

Great info vid. Thank You. One question tho. You were talking about using a ligfht rod. How would an ultralight work loaded with 6# line do with the ned rig?

Im going to be trying the Ned rig on my next trip to Lake Saint Clair. I’ve been really successful with the wacky rig lately

Tons of Ned baits on the market now. One of the most exciting is Strike King's Ned Bug in moon juice color (great in clear waters). Another good one is the Missile Baits Ned Bomb in Goby bite.

I love the Zman plastics, I use a VMC Rugby jig and the bigger TRD instead so I can rig it weedless
