"Forensic Science is crazy to me" I'm currently a Forensics science major in college and I can agree it's crazy. Some of the methods and tests I learn blow my mind. One (newer and expensive) method of collecting fingerprints is by melting solid gold until it turns into a gas which then sticks to very fine fingerprints. Zinc is then melted to a gas and that chemically bonds to the gold so that it becomes visible to the eye. It's like superglue fumigation on steroids. I love this major

for the post mortem: why do ryan and shane take turns having neat hair and completely messed up hair? how do they decide who gets the hairbrush that day? #boogara4life
The place Shane is talking about with the decaying bodies is “The Body Farm”, located in Tennessee. My mom is a prosecutor and got to visit. It’s very difficult to get that chance and only law and medical people are typically allowed. It’s really cool and fascinating I love listening to what all she saw there. But it smells so bad near some of the bodies that she had to throw away a pair of shoes and even after showering multiple times and even swimming, her hair still smelled terrible. Just thought y’all would be interested :)
I don’t think that the murderer would have had to break in, I think that they could have came inside during the party and hid. I think that the handyman would have been recognized and wouldn’t have gotten away with it if the family knew him and what he looked like
Considering this was also the 50's, and it was described that everyone in the neighborhood were friends, or at the very least knew each other, it wasn't uncommon at that time that people left their doors unlocked from time to time. So he could've honestly just walked in through the back door or something with no problems. #postmortem
The fact that Sam because a pro wrestler after, if he was innocent, trying and failing to fight off his wifes killer, is a very interesting psychological thing to me and one hell of an origin story
@@GeekRaj Usually, wrestlers don't choose their nicknames. Their managers do that. Maybe Sheppard's manager gave him the "Killer" nickname because he had been accused of murder. But, it doesn't necessarily mean that he actually was a killer. That wrestler known as "The Rock" isn't actually a rock, or a stone, or anything of the sort. It's just a nickname. So, by the same token, the fact that Sam Sheppard's wrestling nickname was "Killer" doesn't prove that he murdered his wife, especially since a lot of the evidence contradicts this idea.
I love the idea that they give Ryan the script and then Shane just shows up, no clue what's going to happen, they just tell him "this is the subject we're covering, it's true crime/supernatural, just do what you do best" and he rolls with it 😂
25:57 "was never proven innocent" i get what you're saying, but in the USA the assumption SHOULD be that they are innocent until proven guilty. There is never a need to be proven innocent.
But in the eyes of the community though... really, when an innocent person is convicted, their reputation is tarnished even if they are later set free.
Fewer things are harsher than the court of public opinion. Also, it’s not just in the USA, the idea of “innocent until proven guilty” is a hallmark of justice systems. That is what a trial is for. It gives the prosecution the chance to prove that the defendant is guilty beyond any reasonable doubt. Still, while the burden of evidence lies with the prosecution, it is sometimes up to the defense to look for new theories because if the authorities are so certain the defendant did it, they neglect evidence that could prove otherwise.
Jackie Harmon ME TOO ME TOO then i thought about john mulaney sitting with shane and ryan for a cold case or going on a ghost hunt ! warms my heart idk if i could actually take that
For the postmortem: Not sure if anyone else has pointed this out, but couldn't they have tested the blood that didn't match Marilyn nor Sam at the scene to Eberling or is this one of those cases where the sample was "mysteriously lost"?
Jegeriufane N they’re saying test the blood that blood against eberling. I think you’re reading it as, they didn’t test it. They’re saying use the blood that came back as not sam or marilyns and see if it’s eberlings
from wikipedia: 'With regard to tying the blood to Eberling, the DNA analysis that was allowed to be admitted to the trial was inconclusive. A plaintiff DNA expert was 90% confident that one of the blood spots belonged to Richard Eberling but, according to the rules of the court, this was not admissible. The defense argued that the blood evidence had been tainted in the years since it was collected, and that an important blood spot on the closet door in Marilyn Sheppard's room potentially included 83% of the adult white population. The defense also pointed out that the results in 1955 from the older blood typing technique, that the blood collected from the closet door was Type O, while Eberling's blood type was Type A.[58]' so it looks like there was some work done on it, but its not conclusive.
@@shelbymiller6144 I'm not sure they could match blood to specific people at that time. They could match blood types, but they didn't have DNA testing or anything like that. They could have seen if the blood matched Eberling's blood type, which would have added support to his story that he was the killer, but I don't think they could have definitively determined that it was Eberling's blood...
Steven Tebou I wasn’t adding anything to if they should’ve or could’ve tested the blood compared to his, I was just clarifying the comment above mine. They thought the op didn’t think they tested the blood at all, but they were asking if they tested it against his. That’s all 😊
for the toastmortem: I wanted to give a toast to someone who is important to me, she works as a respiratory therapist at a hospital where the community is largely made up of the elderly. She goes to work without PPE, and her niece is making mask for the workers at the hospital. So just a shoutout too Alison, and all the healthcare workers in the world. We love you guys and appreciate all healthcare providers.
I think it was the Handyman because unless it was public knowledge that Marilyns teeth were under her corpse how did the handyman know she died biting and fighting so hard she lost her teeth???
The handyman’s DNA is everywhere at the scene, he had Marilyn’s ring, and- oh yeah- he’s a convicted murderer. So agreed, it was him. Calling this unsolved seems odd, though not technically wrong.
Also, the fact that she was pregnant was interesting. She could have been having an affair with/been assaulted by the handyman, resulting in a pregnancy. The handyman could have found out and, not wanting his actions to be revealed, killed her to get rid of both her and her unborn child.
I'm not trying to defend him, but the media was on everyone's tails, and he could have easily found out little details like that from the media. My theory is that maybe Sam hired the handyman as a hitman in exchange for the cocktail rings since he could have possibly known that the handyman had killed before since they were close. And like @elementsfannfics3859 states, it could have easily been a murder to cover up an affair.
When people get hit on the head sometimes lights can appear brighter than they are, not to mention hallucinations r common and the calibration of the eyes is very common after a serious concussion or brain damage. It's very likely that when he was chasing the handyman he was dealing with these symptoms at the same time.
@@alwayzpinchycs4236 but under those circumstances even a doctor wouldn't think about it because way to much is emotionally going on... At least in my opinion 🤷♀️
@@alwayzpinchycs4236 maybe he did know he was having symptoms, but telling the court "hey I was suffering brain damage trust me I'm a pro" doesn't help when the court is like that
For the #PostMortem: What if the child that his wife was pregnant with, was not Sam's, but in fact somebody else's whom she was having a possible affair with? If she had told her lover (who may have even been the handyman) that she was pregnant but was staying with Sam and was going to raise the baby as his, this could've made her lover snap and murder her. This could be related to the 'no forced entry', as Marilyn may have let him in to the house to 'talk', especially as her husband was also asleep downstairs.
Or maybe the baby was not her husband and she'd told her lover she was going to come clean and tell her husband the truth..if her lover was a poor man he'd been afraid of the wrath of the doctor and his influence around town..or if the lover were wealthy and influential he'd have killed to keep her quiet fearing for his wealth and reputation. What if the lover..wealthy or not..had been married and silenced Mrs Shepard before she could expose the pregnancy??
Maybe the man was the mayor who was the baby's father and he killed her as to maintain his position both politically and socially . And his wife may have burned his clothes to destroy the evidience
Case closed. He shall rot in the deepest pits of hell being impaled straight through his testicals up his lungs with burning harpoons by the hand of satan himself.
People do realize he was depressed for years after getting out of jail, and still was known as a "Killer" even when released. that could definitely be a causing factor in the stage name.
I stumbled on this case through the 'recent deaths' section on the Wikipedia main page. The man who got the conviction overturned, who was also on the O.J. Simpson team, just died at 87.
No need. The handyman was known to be type A blood, and there was no Type A blood found at the crime scene. law2.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/sheppard/evidence.html
No,no,no,no. Here's what would happen. Satan would take a goood look at Shane, think of what Shane has done, and say "Ya know what? You're next in line for my throne...see you when you get there."
I went to a camp about crime stuff, and we spent an entire day going over this case. We watched videos about it,looked at pictures, and filled a few huge pieces of paper with evidence for different suspects. We were never able to get a definitive answer. Every time we thought we had enough to prove someone was the killer, we would get new evidence. It was really interesting to do.
It's kinda wierd how their son, Chip, didn't hear anything and stayed asleep, if Sam heard her from the living room couch, wouldn't Chip be closer to the room?
For post Mortem: Why didn’t they test any of the suspects’ blood types against the splatter by the door? They should of at least gotten the blood type in order to rule some people out #postmortem
Post-mortem: Did they ever look at the people at the party? It does seem kind of strange for Sam to have fallen asleep during a party, perhaps he was drugged by someone at the party who stayed at the house and eventually murdered Marilyn. That would also explain the lack of evidence to suggest a break in 🤔
Richard eberling was in the house at the time of the murder, it is plausible that he drugged sam (which is why he slept so long and did not hear marilyn right away), but theres no way of telling if sam had anything in his system at the time. It is very likely that eberling is the killer, he had 2 of her rings, was in the house, has killed before and confessed to hers (including the part about the biting, that is a strong connecting detail because her teeth were in the bed)
#Postmortem Richard Ebberling was a really troubled man all the way from childhood. He bounced around foster homes because of a lot of disturbing behaviours. He finally settled with the Ebberling's but even then he spent most of his time wearing Mrs Ebberling's clothes around the house and refusing to play with other boys. He was linked to 5 different deaths, including his foster father George Ebberling (died of a stroke, but then found to have ingested poison right before that had been left on his bedside table); His "girlfriend" Barbara Kinzel - who was the nurse who looked after Sam Sheppard after it happened and stated he was innocent - when he apparently crashed his car into the back of a parked car...her neck was broken in the exact same place as Sheppard's and Ethel Durkin's but had none of the injuries consistent with what Ebberling said happened in the crash (he also only started "dating" her after she'd been in the papers saying Sam Sheppard was innocent and Ebberling was seemingly actually gay). He was also linked to the deaths of Durkin's sisters too. He admitted to being in the Sheppard hous. He claimed he'd cut himself while cleaning the windows and had gone into the house to clean up and stop the bleeding, saying that was why his blood was in the house - and decided to nick the rings while he was in there (the blood on the closet door was a 90% match for Ebberling but was considered inconclusive in court). He started going bald at a young age so he wore a big bushy wig to cover it up. And if you look at the police sketch - it kind of looks like him! Sometimes, if it walks like a duck...
Every other episode, Shane: "Cops are crooked! They're dirty!" Shane here: "If I was a cop, I'd just wanna sit around the station all day...." I sense a pattern here....
I’m not related to these Sheppards but I have the same last name and live pretty close to Bay Village. My dad actually was contacted by a couple reporters when The Fugitive came out because they thought he was related to Sam Sheppard. He had just moved here from Ireland so there was literally no connection. We both find this case interesting cause it feels almost personal. It’s what got me interested in true crime too :)
Post Mortem: As they had friends round one of them could’ve drugged Sam causing him to fall asleep during their little party. Whilst he was drugged it’s plausible to quickly take his watch, ring and his key in order to get back into the house to kill Marilyn and point blame to Sam. This would also explain his grogginess when he awoke and why he couldn’t explain the ‘white form’.
could also be that they went looking for other things to steal, the wife was groggily waking up and they panicked and killed her, and then in their own shock/maybe hearing the guy waking up legged it

yes, very interesting case!

I'm just proud of Marilyn for refusing to go down without a fight. Like I know she was fighting for her life, but how many times have you heard of a murder victim who fought so hard she broke her teeth biting her attacker?
Senna Taylor it happens a lot actually. Shocker that people don’t want to be murdered so they fight back with everything they have.
yea but the husband clearly had no bite mark yet they sentence him to jail and never clear his innocence wth
There was a case where a little girl was raped and murdered, she was found to have bit part of her tongue out because of the pain.
That didn't do her any good tho, did it? It's just sad and heartbreaking. May she rest in peace.

"Forensic Science is crazy to me"
I'm currently a Forensics science major in college and I can agree it's crazy.
I'm currently taking a forensics science class rn and I haven't heard of that method, sounds absolutely wild and badass though

But why would his wrestling name be "the killer" if he hadnt killed anyone. I think he killed his wife.
@@GeekRaj
Usually, wrestlers don't choose their nicknames.

For the postmortem: Not sure if anyone else has pointed this out, but couldn't they have tested the blood that didn't match Marilyn nor Sam at the scene to Eberling or is this one of those cases where the sample was "mysteriously lost"?
TheEllaDarling they did test it, that's how they know it's not Marilyn's or Sam's blood

I think it was the Handyman because unless it was public knowledge that Marilyns teeth were under her corpse how did the handyman know she died biting and fighting so hard she lost her teeth???
Good point, plus that kind of exonorate sam cause how could he have killed her without bite marks
I think it was the handyman, also.
When people get hit on the head sometimes lights can appear brighter than they are, not to mention hallucinations r common and the calibration of the eyes is very common after a serious concussion or brain damage. It's very likely that when he was chasing the handyman he was dealing with these symptoms at the same time.
this is very interesting!! an important detail to consider
Jordan Bunge he was a neuro sûreté on so he should of known that he was having symptoms
@@alwayzpinchycs4236 but under those circumstances even a doctor wouldn't think about it because way to much is emotionally going on... At least in my opinion 🤷♀️

Truth Hurts that’s a really interesting way at looking at it, very probable too

Post-mortem: Did they ever look at the people at the party? It does seem kind of strange for Sam to have fallen asleep during a party, perhaps he was drugged by someone at the party who stayed at the house and eventually murdered Marilyn. That would also explain the lack of evidence to suggest a break in 🤔
Josefin W maybe he did. Shane it the one with tornado experience, maybe Ryan underestimated power of tornados.

"A jealous killer is a woman."
Every single man who's committed uxoricide: 😳😳
'Mom , dad my pronouns are now she/her'
#Postmortem Richard Ebberling was a really troubled man all the way from childhood.
