I never understood what Jack the Ripper meant by "that joke about leather apron gave me real fits" until I learned that there was a guy who lived in the area, a bootmaker named John Pizer and nicknamed "Leather Apron" who was reported to have threatened several prostitutes and was being considered as a suspect for the murders. He was arrested, but had alibis for all the murders up till then. So basically in his letter Jack the Ripper was saying "you thought it was *that* guy?! Lol"
There's no proof the killer wrote a single letter. The police at the time believed it was a journalist. Most people who are passionate about the case today believe it was a hoax.
Fun fact: During the Jack the Ripper incidents, there was a play about Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde going on. Apparently the lead actor, Richard Mansfield, was so convincing that many people believed he was Jack the Ripper.

"Buzfeed unsolved solved a murder" or something around that context. Everybody please bring this to the top let the boys see this!
Another fact to take into account was at 11:51 he states Jack the Ripper sent a letter to the post office before it got in papers and became public and the police were the only people who knew that it occurred which can also be a clue that he was a police officer
He couldn’t be a doctor. He said he was going to use the blood to write the next letter, but was frustrated that it coagulated and was useless, but a doctor would know the blood would clot.
Right. And the theory of him being a police officer or a police mortician, those would give him anatomical knowledge so he still should've known the blood would coagulate.
I mean he could be a shrewd individual who was purposefully including information in the letter to throw authorities off; aka he was lying. He also said he would clip one of the ears of the victims, but that didn't go down either
@@josiahteng6906 he didn’t get the ear because he ran out of time. It would never occur to a doctor to say “I’m gonna use the blood as ink” because they would know that it wouldn’t work. It’d be some 5d chess move to double bluff like that.
They could’ve also looked at the color of the blood, as it gets darker when it clots. But there are a lot of factors to consider including the surface (blood clots quicker on a rough surface and oily surfaces make the blood clot slower than it would on a smooth or clean surface) Also when someone dies, their blood pressure tanks to zero and they stop bleeding which can help determine if they were stabbed to death and died quickly or if they were laying there bleeding for a while before they died.
Theory: what if, Jack the Ripper was actually a cop and that’s how he was able to walk around doing things without getting caught because everyone around him just thought he was a normal cop. This would explain a lot of things besides the “Doctor” thing, But it is possible he was studying medicine and quit because he knew he wouldn’t go anywhere therefore he chose to become a cop instead.
Historians apparently believed the letter read very American, which is interesting. Another thought I had was that it could be a medical student who is using people he perceives won't be missed as practice subjects. It's hard to say, though, because the last victim was killed in her home where the most damage was done, but before it was hastily done within half an hour. The wombs apparently aren't easy to find, but they were removed. The lighting was bad at night because they didn't have electrical street lamps, so how could they so accurately cut the body to remove certain organs and why? Were they selling the organs? Eating them? What? I have so many questions.
@@elisatinsley5181 I agree about the killer being American... because I truly believe Jack the ripper was HH Holmes... he was believed to be in England at the time of the killings. plus he went to medical school and dissected most of his victims , so he would know how to remove organs.. this should have been a theory
Interns at the asylum Kosminski stayed in have stated they believed him to be completely harmless and weren't even sure he could speak English, considering he only seemed to speak Yiddish.
Also!!! As a woman of a certain age in West Yorkshire- We had the same problem with newspapers & a misogynist police force ‘assuming’ that the majority of women were prostitutes! No!!! They were not! To begin with the bastard just picked on women that were easy to attack & then when he got confident, he took more risks & attacked any lonely, vulnerable woman!
@@Elly3981 which she probably was, men owned their wives back then so the women had no reason to really be out unless she was doing some shady stuff, i doubt women wanted to walk around the streets of Whitechapel at night it would’ve been a very dangerous place. I’m not trying to take a dig at the women either I’m just saying that she probably was a prostitute, there’s nothing wrong with that they had to do what they did to survive.
theory: he worked for the police which would explain why he knew all the police routes. he could’ve been a police mortician which would explain how he knew how to use the knife on a body
That is my own theory as well! Also, because a police morticians' word would have been valued by the authorities, he could have diverted the suspicions onto doctors and other people who had anatomical knowledge while at the same time using his position to make him 'one of the good guys'.
Especially because it was still crudely done bc morticians focus more on how a body looks sewn up so they would still need pretty good knowledge but didn't have great practice
What's interesting for me is how he always managed to get away right before the police came. He was certainly very familiar with the streets, maybe scouted them beforehand to know which dark alley would be a safe passage after the murder. I also think he could have been a "nobody" - a regular person whose name, as with most of us, went down into the darkness of passing time never to be discovered.
@@someweirdstuff1256no the police commissioner, I believe, stated in his writings he definitely believed kosminski to be the one. However some of the facts he wrote about kosminski were wrong so its still tossed up
True, but the thing with Marie Kellys room is that the door can be opened from the outside, by reaching through a window and unlocking the latch. This means any potential men that she had brought back whilst “working” would be able to regain access to her room at any given time. Which does throw doubt onto the theory
Also he would of known the other women because working girls at that time were like family they had to look out for each other plenty of motive for him to get rid of them to scare her out of that life
@@DevonHHunter if the motive is that he wanted to scare her, it’s weird to me that he would be so elaborate with the murders? why mutilate, remove organs etc? seems like overkill
Well before the letters he was called red handkerchief becouse according to the police he used to strangle his victims wit that item (that explains why the victims crye's for help wern't heard).
Interestingly, a professor I once had told us that the police always knew it was Aaron Kosminski. He (my professor) claimed to have visited the Crime Museum of Scotland Yard, which is not open to the public and is only accessible by invitation. There he learned that Scotland Yard actually had solved the case: Aaron Kosminski had contracted syphilis from one of the local prostitutes, problem is, he couldn't remember which one. Worse, late stage syphilis can cause insanity, especially if not treated. They stipulate that he basically went on a rampage and killed any prostitute he thought could have been the one that passed him the syphilis. The reason they covered it up is interesting: Kosminski was a Polish Jewish immigrant and the police feared that if this was made to be public, there would be war on the streets with people harassing the Polish/Jewish neighbourhoods. So they covered it up, and the reason they continued to just let it play out as an unsolved case is simple enough: tourism revenue from people who are interested in the "Jack the Ripper" tales.
This is actually a really good theory. The Jack the Ripper killings stopped suddenly and most serial killers don't stopped unless they are stopped. If he was ill and passed away due to it that would explain why he just disappeared.

After this episode I've seen some murmurs that maybe he was a police officer, which is how he was able to evade capture during the search, I personally love this theory as in the letters he keeps referring to the chief of police as "boss". A not so fun fact: With Jack The Ripper, many believe that all women he killed were prostitutes, the real truth is that only one was but people are more bothered about the ripper himself rather than who the women were. This was caused by the Police's Death Certificates, which stated the women were all prostitutes. It's kinda sad that they just blow over their lives honestly but I'm sure that there's existing books on them! Enjoy this info! I love this kind of stuff so it's sort of like a memory check :D

To deny Kelly and Stride especially being prostitutes is nonsense. It'd be like arguing 1+1 doesn't equal 2. Both have EXTENSIVE records of prostitution. The only one that's in question I Catherine Eddows but the rest definitely did have a history with prostitution

To add to the cop theory, the ripper references “boss” in his letter, he knows these letters are going to the police almost like he is putting it in the open that he is a cop and is writing to his superior
I am definitely a believer of the cop theory, but "boss" was also a term of familiarity between friends at the time. He may have been attempting to express a cordialness as if he was on their level.
@@kazmierahammond2148 Yes. People who serial kill like this seem like they'd be proud of it and want to show off, and they consider themselves to be better than everyone else. A sociopath kinda thing. Could be either that he was just using "boss" in the way/s you described, I think. Maybe possible that he was being ironic and he actually was a cop himself, but idk how likely that is
Boss is a common nickname that people call their mates in the UK, esp London, so it was probably “jack” trying to be buddy buddy with the cops - loads of SKs see themselves as “friends” with the police, especially those who target sex workers (misogyny am I right)
The way that some people in these comments discuss the victims is horrible, particularly about post mortem pictures of these women, stating that these pictures "weren't that bad". Those women were victims and brutally murdered in horrific ways. Stop minimizing what happened to them in an attempt to make yourself sound 'edgier'.
It’s because these people don’t understand that what makes these pictures so horrible is that these were innocent people who were taken unfairly. You can look at a body all you want, but you won’t be hit by that weight until you see the person it once was. They just see a corpse, they don’t see the victim.

Pizza it’s really weird that i’ve once fell in love with Jack the Ripper and i used to think that whoever he was living with was the luckiest person on earth. I might’ve been sick back then
I love the theory that Jack the Ripper was actually a woman and a midwife. It would explain the anatomical knowledge that the killer had of the female body, and it would also explain how she could move around freely and undetected. Because of the way society treated women in those days, with the whole "women can't do anything," it could be safe to assume that there were no female suspects because they believed that a woman could not carry out these murders. I think that this is a really interesting idea and hope that one day, they can prove it right. Edit: It would also be easier for her to kill these women. If she walked towards a woman at night, then the victim might not think much of it and it would be easier to get closer to them to kill fast and undetected.

Another cool theory was H.H. Holmes (Herman Webster Mudgett), he was an American Serial Killer during the Jack The Ripper time period. Holmes was believed to of been in Great Britain during the Jack The Ripper murders. Also H.H. Holmes had surgical skills that he obtained from Medical School and he also looks very similar if not identical to Jack The Ripper sketches. If you wanna know something even weirder, handwriting samples from Holmes and Jack The Ripper procured a 97% match.
Yeah this is great theory except H.H. Holmes was actually a doctor so i doubt he didn't know that blood would clot and you couldn't write with it. Unless that letter is fake i find it hard to believe they were the same people. I don't think JTP was a doctor but had knowledge of the human anatomy somehow.
I always had a weird feeling about the gingerbeer bottle sentence… wouldn’t MOST people know that blood congeals and wouldn’t be functional as an ink substitute? Let alone a doctor, butcher, midwife…
While that is definitely weird, it's not confirmed if the letters were actually from the killer, in which case the writer of the letters not knowing about the blood thickening makes sense.
@@krishashah3661it does make sense, however the intimate knowledge of the murders the MORNING AFTER points to it either being a deranged police officer OR the killer, or both. Theres no way anyone who hadnt seen or committed the crime would have such precise knowledge of the act
@@krishashah3661 however, it could just be a journalist who is paying a police officer for information to make their newspaper more prominent ya know there’s just no knowing
The one thing that definitely makes me think it wasn't actually a doctor is the way they commented in the letter about the blood getting too thick to write with. A doctor or a butcher would know that blood would thicken after being out of the body for a while. That is if the letters were actually written by the actual killer
I don't know if anyone else noticed but the letter mentioned that he stored the blood in a bottle to write with it later. Any person (even a midwife), with the slightest of anatomical knowledge (or even general knowledge about human body), would have known that the blood would clot. therefore, it seems that the killer did not have any anatomical knowledge.
Perhaps not zero anatomical knowledge, but definitely less than that of a doctor or midwife, someone who would not know much beyond what was displayed.

I actually wonder if Jack the Ripper was a guy from Hamilton, Canada, my hometown. I read about this potential suspect a while ago. There was a fellow who was English-born and tended to visit his home in London during the summer. Other times he lived in Hamilton. This chap was wealthier, obviously, since he had two houses, and this was because he was in fact a doctor. In Spring 1888, a prostitute was found in a back alley in a sketchy part of town with her throat slashed in much the same fashion. I’ve actually been to the spot where it supposedly happened, and it’s definitely from the Victorian era. Shortly after, the police investigated, and this guy dipped and went to London, where the rest of the murders occurred. Once the police started getting really involved there, he used his evasion skills to head back to Canada. And in autumn 1888, another murdered prostitute was found in Hamilton, in a similar fashion to Mary Kelly. It’s also worth noting this guy did have a moustache. It’s not the most damning evidence, but I really wonder if that’s who it was. Wish I could remember the guy’s name. Edit: I got some information wrong, but I found the man. His name was Dr. Francis Tumblety. He was American, not English, but practiced in several countries after getting in trouble with the law numerous times, so he was very good at evading the police. He did in fact live in Whitechapel during the time of the Ripper killings. And he also lived and practiced in Hamilton at the time the two prostitutes here were killed. Another interesting tidbit is that he was once married to a prostitute, but the marriage failed. He was a known misogynist, especially towards prostitutes (likely because of his failed marriage), and even kept preserved uteruses on display in his home. I wonder where he got these uteruses…. Some ripperologists say he was too tall to match the description of the man the hookers were with.
@@katiemarie5491 I actually heard it from a ghost tour in downtown Hamilton and researched it myself later on. He’s already on the list of suspects iirc, he’s just not super high up there because the murders in Hamilton were never proven to be him, and him being in the right places at the right times could purely be some weird coincidence. But still, it makes me wonder… Edit: I posted an edit on the original comment. I did some extra research to find the name of the guy I’m looking for.

I have one theory: Maybe there were multiple Jacks, which is why there were 8 suspects. And why this case might be so hard to find out, because no one knew in reality that there were multiple Jacks
"Jack" was a police officer, the commissioner resigned after realizing that the ripper himself was a police officer. Either the commissioner resigned as he was too distraught and hurt that one of his own men was responsible for the murder, or he wanted to avoid an embarrassing ordeal that would've tainted his name, was afraid that if he spoke out he'd be the next victim, or he was forced to resign via threat from the ripper. There are some theories that say that the commissioner was the ripper but I doubt it due to lack of evidence. All I can make of this is that he was most definitely a police officer.

it's not confirmed that the letters were from the actual killer anyway

Really taking "If she breathes, she's a thot" to the next level

Interesting thought, but I’m not sure why a police mortician would know the patrol routes of beat cops
@@spartannrage Well I'd assume there weren't a whole lot of police morticians so it'd make sense if he would be close friends with beat cops
Especially because it was still crudely done bc morticians focus more on how a body looks sewn up so they would still need pretty good knowledge but didn't have great practice
So could he be the police doctor dude
What's interesting for me is how he always managed to get away right before the police came. He was certainly very familiar with the streets, maybe scouted them beforehand to know which dark alley would be a safe passage after the murder.
Wow this sounds real good idea for the actual thing
This is actually a really good theory. The Jack the Ripper killings stopped suddenly and most serial killers don't stopped unless they are stopped. If he was ill and passed away due to it that would explain why he just disappeared.

Theres no way anyone who hadnt seen or committed the crime would have such precise knowledge of the act

healthier to leave that friendship where it was, you doing better without that person.
Makes sense
You should’ve ask for his previous name
The one thing that definitely makes me think it wasn't actually a doctor is the way they commented in the letter about the blood getting too thick to write with. A doctor or a butcher would know that blood would thicken after being out of the body for a while. That is if the letters were actually written by the actual killer
I don't know if anyone else noticed but the letter mentioned that he stored the blood in a bottle to write with it later. Any person (even a midwife), with the slightest of anatomical knowledge
(or even general knowledge about human body), would have known that the blood would clot.
therefore, it seems that the killer did not have any anatomical knowledge.
I thought of this as well!
Perhaps not zero anatomical knowledge, but definitely less than that of a doctor or midwife, someone who would not know much beyond what was displayed.
So it should be the fishporter, Joseph Barnett. But did they ever say that other organs were hurt?
vinod kumar but it was in a jar so the blood would’ve been preserved for a bit
Or not on live people. H.H.Holmes had extensive experience in anatomy from his university days working with, and taking home, cadavers.
Did anyone else gasp a little when they heard how Patricia Cornwell CUT A PAINTING IN HALF hoping that there'd be clues inside?

Didn't any investigator ever think of comparing the handwriting of "Jack The Ripper" to that of the primary suspects?
ponypower8 The letters were never confirmed of being Jack the Rippers smartass
@@wideputin8247 Smartass, isn't verifying and confirming the veracity of something PART OF AN INVESTIGATION??
They actually did that but there is minimal to go by, druid, tumblety and kominski were similar to the writing but they cannot verify the letters that were sent from 'Jack the Ripper' if you know what I mean.
ponypower8 they did but they were only just developing their database and new techniques- so it wasn’t efficient, plus the dear boss letters have been ruled as faked at this point due to the amount of fake responses reported by vigilante groups. It’s kinda hard to figure out anything conclusive from this case because the police were that bad at preserving evidence
if i was a serial killer i wouldn’t use my usual handwriting
Buzzfeed Unsolved should have missing persons posters in the background or something. Imagine all the people that would see them. Maybe someone would recognize one.
Smart however people tend to look at the people.
although in this case it happened back in 1888 so the suspect would be dead by now
pauline 😂😂 I think they mean missing people in general
Rhiannon May ggggggggg
Imagine “all” the nut jobs/trolls writing in saying they know one of the missing persons on the posters?!? 😉
Some ripperologists say he was too tall to match the description of the man the hookers were with.
this is actually good evidence and quite interesting 💀 you should honestly talk to someone about this
@@katiemarie5491 I actually heard it from a ghost tour in downtown Hamilton and researched it myself later on. He’s already on the list of suspects iirc, he’s just not super high up there because the murders in Hamilton were never proven to be him, and him being in the right places at the right times could purely be some weird coincidence. But still, it makes me wonder…
Edit: I posted an edit on the original comment. I did some extra research to find the name of the guy I’m looking for.
Lol his Wikipedia article cites him as a medical quack 😂😂 so not a doctor

I have one theory: Maybe there were multiple Jacks, which is why there were 8 suspects. And why this case might be so hard to find out, because no one knew in reality that there were multiple Jacks
My thoughts exactly...just like yhe zodiac killer..there is no way is only one
"Jack" was a police officer, the commissioner resigned after realizing that the ripper himself was a police officer. Either the commissioner resigned as he was too distraught and hurt that one of his own men was responsible for the murder, or he wanted to avoid an embarrassing ordeal that would've tainted his name, was afraid that if he spoke out he'd be the next victim, or he was forced to resign via threat from the ripper. There are some theories that say that the commissioner was the ripper but I doubt it due to lack of evidence.
All I can make of this is that he was most definitely a police officer.
I like this theory.
He resigned because his boss said he failed the town
I like this theory but how do you explain his anatomical knowledge?
The Stealth I’d imagine after awhile seeing corpses you’d learn some anatomical knowledge or at least easy killing methods
