      For big shifts, for example big e string octave shifts, used your ears and slide until you reach the note. Fixed all big shifts I’ve ever had to deal with. For more information, check out Nathan Cole’s video on shifting.th-cam.com/video/aqI_lxX9W_Y/w-d-xo.html

    I’v heard of this as using a “guide finger.” Great tip!!

      @caryn9953 ปีที่แล้ว

      My teacher called them "shifting fingers" lol he'd write "s.f." in all my music....1st finger is the most common one, then in the midst of all that I was cooking and cut the tip of my 1st finger, he was a pretty easy going guy but I remember how upset he was with me for that lol

    Am learning 3rd position currently and glad to see that this is exactly one of the things I'm learning!
    My biggest tip to people new to shifting - play as many simple tunes and passages, scales etc.. entirely in 3rd position. Get extremely comfortable with the new way of reading the music and the fingering and then worry about moving from one to the other. That way shifting isn't this big scary new thing you're doing, it's just a way of getting from point A to point B

      @@thomasmannia omg I had the same thought lol I am the kind of geek that loves hearing people debate the whole "shoulder rest vs no shoulder rest" thing lol I had a couple of teachers who loved going without one whenever possible, and taught me to go without one too (although I always used one in my performances...except for once when I accidentally forgot to put it one...😂😭)

    So is vibrato a simple ornament or is it intended to cloud the accuracy of the pitch? Both? This isn't a criticism, musicality is about much more than precision.

    • @derekflanderschang9654
      @derekflanderschang9654 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it’s not written but basically you move from for example “first position” (where string musicians spend a lot of time) up to second, third, fourth position, etc and figure out the supporting note from there - whatever the shift demands.
