I'm a guitarist who owns a violin (notice how I didn't say I play one), and I found this channel searching for pickup information, but this video gives the solution to the "how do classical violinists sound like they have infinite sustain?" question I've had for years.
I've been at the viola for 4+ years now and this video has to be about the best and thorough lesson I've seen. The professional string performers seem to defy my ability to detect hearing bow changes, now I know how they do it! You're a great teacher. Thanks.
haha yes indeed! But if you want that nice smooth and flowing bow where no-one can tell when you are changing bow direction, then its a must! Stick with it - its not an overnight thing! Like ALL violin techniques, it must be developed....

Excellent! you explained the importance, the problem, what not to do, modelled the problem, explained where we are trying to achieved, introduced the fingers and the motions and presented exercises, modelled the fingers and the move and the whole finger holding position and the fluidity trying to be achieved, and presented it again and reverbalized it. All in less than 10 minutes. You are GREAT & you didn't over do it at all & the timing & tempo was excellent. I even practiced with my pencil.
Thank you--this explains something I'd heard almost 50 years ago: while watching a violinist in an orchestra; he did an up and down stroke with the bow--and the note sounded continuous with no 'break' in between the bow changing direction. I'd always wondered how he did this...and you just revealed it.
I literally started trying to (finally) learn the violin about 2 hours ago, and I happened to luck upon this after watching the one on how (much) to tighten the bow. I'm hoping I'm correct in assuming that - despite this apparently being an 'advanced' technique - it would be a good idea to start with good bow handling as early as possible. This is really hard, hurts my fingers so much... but I already notice a slight difference in my (currently wobbly) control of the bow. Thank you so much.

I am a rank beginner but I found this video extremely helpful. It makes sense that practicing techniques near the threshold (i.e., with the fingers directly over the strings) would not necessarily sound good, but would be very helpful to learn a new technique. I found it helpful to play along with you until I got the sound you did from the strings. I thought you explained this extremely well. :-)
her methods really works i had problem with my sound so i took her advice and it work. my teacher told me get as much knowledge for the violin on the internet and i did and i did not regret keep these tutorials coming. thank you

You may have hyper mobile (double jointed) fingers. I have the same problem and often work with students who do as well. I have a TH-cam video on Kinesio Taping for hyper mobility (I will be doing some new/better ones soon) and I give a lot of tips for it on my Instagram if you would like to check either one out. It's certainly something I won't be able to do...for a long time or never. But...as hard as it could be to explain it, you make it very easy to understand it and very very clear. BRAVO !
+James Farmakidis I just did the same. I bought a mandolin a couple years ago. It's a great bridge from guitar to violin, as it is scaled and strung the same as violin. That neck feels really small at the start.
As a 62-year old retiree decided to pursue his bucket list and learning the violin, I can't tell you how helpful and enjoyable your videos are. Doing it without assistant properly is hard and slow. Putting a pencil on a table or chair arm, putting your fingers around it, and using weight and downward force to bend all the knuckles works. I assume I will lean the movement from this over time, doing in in midair, half the knuckles and the thumb do not bend and I cannot will it to bend. I feel it's better to do it right from the start with assistance than wrong from the start without.

Recently, while watching professionals playing some pieces I realized their fingers were bent while playing but mine weren't. I was so worried about that until I saw this clip. Very informative, thank you. So basically you want to come down with the arm, while still kind of bowing up with the fingers, to damp the shock of changing the direction. And viceversa. I never tried that before

All of them explain, that you shall make a soft and flexible move and how important it is, but NO one explains how to learn it! I tried hard to make it, but it didn't work. I just started the Cello, and when I would watch cellists on TH-cam, their bowing looked so graceful and pretty, and I couldn't figure out why. Now I know! Big help.
I was taught this as a student many years ago. The principle was taught was to use the forward movement and the finger motion receeding back exactly as described. It has served me well and as I consider a good tone much more important than perfecting a fast passage with a crumby sound I thank my teacher for this useful tip/ technique. Thanks for your videos, very well presented though you might not have thought so, it was exactly as I was taught !!
I just startet playing violin a week ago after 12 years of guitar. I bought a lot of books with it. But none of the books and dvds describe the bowhold better and more easy to understand like the way you do. Thank you very very much!
Hi, Dont worry about the little finger coming off the bow as long as the rest of hand is working properly. Also, dont worry about tilting as this is something that happens when you become more advanced. Just play normally for now as you may find it will tilt naturally on its own or you can try in the future....Alison
im 11 and i have to go to violin classes in my school my mom is forcing me i am so scared cause my teacher is so mean and i am horible i been play violin for 2 years and i hav not getting better i forgot all the g and e notes in the summer im so scared ahhh
You should practice every day, even in the summer. If you can afford it, you might want to find a private teacher that you like and take lessons on your own. I've had mean music teachers in school too but you wont be in those classes forever, but playing with other students is good experience so I would recommend sticking it out if you want to continue to play. If you really just don't like playing violin at all then maybe you could talk your mom into playing something else or choosing a different hobby all together.

I think making that transition to smoothness and not all mechanical like comes with the natural progression of things. It holds true in pretty much everything you do. No doubt there's technique but there's a point where people feel like performing an action is second nature and not something they are actively thinking about. Thanks for the videos!
Thanks for explaining and demonstrating this so thoroughly--back in the early 70s I saw a violin soloist play an up and down stroke without hearing a perceptible 'break' in the note--it sounded like one continuous note and I wondered how he accomplished this, and now all these years later you have explained it...thank you!

Bontje, I had the same problem as you describe. What helped me out was to watch a Red Desert Violin video explaining the Jellyfish exercise - I watched that and finally everything clicked into place.

Today I was very delighted indeed ! After reading your comments on the photos of my Bow on your page on FB, I objectively realized how to tighten the Bow. I had a gradual approach step by step and listened to the sound. There is a point when the sound is very good. Besides, there is the bouncing problem in wrong tightening. Part of my struggle with the G string must have been to Bow tightening. How can I thank you enough for your advice and patience ! Thank you so much.

It's probably just me but I bow tends to slip out my hands and my pinkie locks in place when extended. I don't know if anyone have the same problems.
i know that i have double jointed fingers and my pinkie does that too, so you are probably double jointed in your fingers
You may have hyper mobile (double jointed) fingers. I have the same problem and often work with students who do as well. Having the same problem when playing the cello! And my thumb keeps bending backwards when it's mean to be rounded.

I think making that transition to smoothness and not all mechanical like comes with the natural progression of things. It holds true in pretty much everything you do. No doubt there's technique but there's a point where people feel like performing an action is second nature and not something they are actively thinking about. Thanks for the videos!
Thanks for explaining and demonstrating this so thoroughly--back in the early 70s I saw a violin soloist play an up and down stroke without hearing a perceptible 'break' in the note--it sounded like one continuous note and I wondered how he accomplished this, and now all these years later you have explained it...thank you!

Bontje, I had the same problem as you describe. What helped me out was to watch a Red Desert Violin video explaining the Jellyfish exercise - I watched that and finally everything clicked into place.
your lessons gave me confidence to try play violin myself, I'm starting as soon as I get my violin (I'm getting my uncle's old one)

Today I was very delighted indeed ! After reading your comments on the photos of my Bow on your page on FB, I objectively realized how to tighten the Bow. I had a gradual approach step by step and listened to the sound. There is a point when the sound is very good. Besides, there is the bouncing problem in wrong tightening. Part of my struggle with the G string must have been to Bow tightening. How can I thank you enough for your advice and patience ! Thank you so much.

@sandman... sounds like ud rather run before you can walk,i`ve been working on Alisons videos for a few weeks now and im a total newb to violin. I can whole heartedly say she doesn't ramble it is re iterating, very thorough and indepth and easy to follow.
These are the foundation basics which everyone needs no matter what your doing be it reading , writing, learning violin or trying to ride a bike.
So start at video 1 and keep watching it till you can comfortably understand what is being said.
