    Thanks, this is helpful to me. I usually practice scales for intonation but I liked what you said about finger coordination. Also I liked your comment about your violin ringing if you are in tune. Its a more motivating goal to try to make one's violin ring than to just think about being in tune.

    Hey Sumina, I have a HUGE admiration for you.
    I started to play the violin there is now one year ago ( since november 2018 ) and it became a REAL addiction :-D
    I practice around 2/3 hours per day since last year and my motivation is better everyday !
    I think it can be a EXCELLENT idea if you make some tutorials ( especially for the left hand / intonation :-) ) on your channel because there is lot of " teachers " on TH-cam but we never really see them play and when they play, it's often somes easy pieces on the first position only so hard to know their real " level ".
    But if a violinist like YOU make some tutorials, you
    would have a great credibility because your playing is just insane, awesome so I would know then that your advices are really useful and effective..
    I subscribe :-) ( and sorry for my horrible english, I'm french ).

    My 2 cents: Children and teenagers should practice 10ths and octaves (8ths) in order to STRETCH their fingers as they grow up, provided they practice for many years (e.g., 8-12 years) as a child/teenager. 8ths (octaves) are much more important musically than 10ths since very few violin compositions (other than Paganini) use 10ths. My pinky (way past age 20+something) is too short to play tenths in the 1st through 2nd positions so I focus on practicing octaves, 3rds, 4ths, 5ths, and 6ths. My warm-up sometimes starts with an open G-string and then I place my 1st finger on the D-string, then the 2nd finger on D, then the 3rd finger on D, and then the 4th finger on D-string. Then I repeat this pattern using the open D-string and play 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th fingers on the G-string. Then I repeat those 2 patterns using the open A-string, and then the open E-string. And before or after that, I play a 1 octave G major scale or A major scale slow detache' and then slurred (''legato'') super fast to get my fingers moving quickly; then 2 octaves, then 3 octaves. I have to work more on 4 octaves as my intonation and fingering struggles that high up the fingerboard.

    Thanks for this tip, Sumina ! On a separate note to Sumina: I'm surprised you didn't win the Menuhin 2018 competition. You sound much better than the winner Diana Adamyan, and her clip that I saw is at th-cam.com/video/s6aE7adBwHI/w-d-xo.html Your clip that I saw is at th-cam.com/video/7uQZsx33jCQ/w-d-xo.html I entered only 1 music competition plus 13 (or more) auditions for orchestras and 1 audition for the Julliard School or Music. The latter was daunting as there were 8 judges, 6 in the 1st room, 2 in the 2nd room, and seeing the 6 judges sitting merely 8 feet away from me was daunting and made me nervous and I flubbed the music playing by memory when nervous. I wasn't surprised that I didn't get into Julliard, so I switched careers before graduating high school and went into engineering. I'm sure you will do fine in a career of music.

    What an excellent video. I especially liked the comment about intonation being what makes the violin ring. Not sure if these are actuall overtones but every note has a sweet spot and it is amazing the number of players who play ‘in tune ish’ but never consistently seek out this ringing sound.

  • @stew148
    @stew148 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Scales are so good! You can use them to warm up. You can use them to focus on one part of playing the violin like different bow strokes or perfecting posture and hand, wrist, and arm movements (instead of a piece so you can focus your attention to the technique, not the notes). And scales can be used to practice shifting. The lost goes on and this comment is getting a bit long. If ever you feel like not doing scales just remember that no matter how tedious they are, you're doing yourself a huge favour. Even if it's just 15 mins per practice session of scales, you can't get worse by doing them (I hope).

    This is a super cute video, thanks! I was looking for some warm up inspiration and found it interesting what you said about the violin ringing like a bell and that that means for you that you're playing in tune. It makes a lot of sense, although I've never thought about it like that. I guess I learned intonation mainly by checking with my open strings and also checking 4ths where possible... Cool to hear some different ways of thinking about it!

    Just a small thing, she says her finishing exercise is thirds, but she's actually playing fourths in the video. Not a big deal -- both thirds and fourths are incredibly valuable to practice. Ruggiero Ricci, the great 20th century violinist noted for his left hand, often said playing thirds were the single best use of a violinist's practice time. But there is also a really good case to be made for fourths because they are a perfect interval and very uncompromising -- if you don't have the interval right, you hear it.
    Anyway, super-helpful video, thank you for posting this!

    when i first started learning piano i had no method(still this case). Only a count. so i counted the first few keys from left to right then right to left and thought AG was DE then found it is AG AG. But when i put together the scales i did it in a way that really did what you said. (A warm spot started lighting in my belly button when i played my left hand and right hand together in the cord sequence of the scales) it reminds me of the "ring" you said. I started playing the scale faster and faster and eventually my belly button felt like a warm liquid was in the very center of my being. Thought i'd mention. I was playing a scale back and forth like you were and then my qi stirred up. It was cool. (Yes i'm me).

    Have you created a video on the bowing hand that showcases the protonation and supination of the forearm and how to coordinate it with curling/retraction? of the fingers to achieve smooth bow changes while staying on plane for each of the strings. Granted you establish the plane with the shoulder yet if your fingers acting like shock absorbers don't stay on the plane line one loses the contact point introducing problems including unwanted bow bounce. Are there drills or exercises that isolate these facets of the bow stroke so one can coordinate them together to obtain bow proficiency. Or am I dreaming about an ideal that requires years of private study with a teacher who introduces the sections of the bow incrementally over time so one eases into whole bowing. Sorry to bother you with basics. The only drill I've seen is hovering the bow over with each string in slow motion as part of a practice regimen at the outset of the learning process.

    Can you explain a little more about what tenths are? I can see what you are doing - stretching your fingers. Are the notes 10 whole steps from each other?

    • @marielange9077
      @marielange9077 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      S. Terris You will know when you are ready. Hint: an octave is a perfect 8th; tenths are two more notes between the upper & lower notes. Practice the scales your teacher assigns you. Tenths are very advanced. Remember, she is a concert artist.

    You were playing all scales high up on the fingerboard. How can I learn notes that are higher than the seventh position and make sure they are in tune. I have done octaves but not tenths.

    Very good video!
    Do you have any video in which you show the progress in a violin piece from the first reading until the day of the concert? (comparing each of the days) I think it would be great! I like that kind of videos. Please, Sumina. If this would be possible...

    Thank you so much for this short but wonderful video 😊 🙏This is so very helpful because you hit all the most tricky points, such as time constraints, scale-dislike, painful 10ths and best intonation identification: the bell sound of intonation, so intuitive and insightful!

    Hi Sumina! I always love to see what you're up to. Thanks for these tips. I wanted to point out one thing you were doing right (in my opinion) but didn't actually mention in your video ... NO vibrato with scales. That helps to focus on intonation.
