Adult Beginner Violin - 1 year progress

  • I am 30 years old and I have been learning the violin for 1 year today.
    I have wanted to play the violin since the 4th grade when a classmate brought her violin and her violin teacher to school and played a duet for show-and-tell one day. My parents didn't send me to lessons and I never had enough money for an instrument or lessons fees on my own until recently.
    I dove head first into it, bought my own instrument and stared going to lessons regularly once a week for the first 6 months, and twice per week from months 6-9. When I moved back to the USA because of all the lock-downs, I couldn't find a teacher so I have been learning on my own ever since.
    The past couple of months I've felt really down on myself, comparing myself to other "adult beginner progress" videos and feeling like I just don't measure up, especially considering I practice every day, and up until month 10 I practiced a few hours per day. But I have to remember, I'm doing this because I love it and if I'm a little slow at improving, so what? I'll get better.
    I'll become a true LingLing (wannabe) someday, I just have to keep practicing 40 hours every day. ;)

    As a musician, I can tell you that even though you may feel like you're stagnant in your ability, as long as you're practicing consistently, you're getting better. Your brain is making different connections every time you practice. Some days, it will be like, "woah, where did this come from?" Most days are a fun* challenge, though. 🙂 Happy practicing! Good luck for your learning process. Nice video! I have been on that road since I was 16-17 years old and I am now 34, with the exception that I had already some musical background. I never stopped playing and my time of pratice increased as I got more motivated. A different teacher and a better sound quality violin helped a lot. I can say that I only noticed a greater progress many years after I started playing. My learning process was markedly by steps. Although I see many adult students progressing a lot in the first 2 years that did not happen with me. During the first years, I used to make a harsh sound on the violin. It seems like you are a way forward. Impressive!

    My dear...I was a professional violinist… I must tell you the progress you’ve made in one year it’s more like a student who has played for four years. You have a special talent that should be nurtured...At the rate you learn you should be able to play in a community orchestra in about four years if you stick with it. In fact in about two years you should be ready to join a community orchestra that has no audition requirement… Bravo! Good job...

    12 years ago, at 45 years old, I started learning the violin. I will tell you that there is a very steep hill to climb for the first few years, but the good news is, it only gets harder lol! ....but it does get more and more enjoyable... so it is well worth all the effort. I played violin from 11 years old to 18 years old. From 11 to 13 I had a really good teacher. Then, due to arthritis she had to retire and my learning and playing went down hill. :-( Back then there was no internet or DVDs. I've taken up guitar since (self-taught by watching videos online and DVDs), both with pick and finger-style and I can honestly say guitar is way easier, even finger-style. There are so many things to learn on a violin and you need a good teacher. But keep practicing and learning on your own till you find a good teacher, either in person or online. Wishing you the best!

  • @andyhurrell
    @andyhurrell 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

    I began playing the violin two months after my 62nd birthday. I am now 67. I played brass instruments from the age of 8 and studied music at degree level, so although I was a violin 'beginner' I had a big headstart over an absolute beginner - being able to read music notation and knowing how key signatures and scales work removed many complications from the typical beginner's equation. Also, by the time I got to 62 I'd heard quite a lot of music, so I had a clear idea of what I was trying to achieve; it's pointless studying the details before you have grasped the overall concept.
    I was not surprised to discover that playing a violin with good intonation is really difficult - and I mean really difficult - at least, it is for me. Firstly, although I consider myself musically sensitive, I am often a bit slow to determine whether a pitch is slightly sharp or slightly flat. This is a major handicap for a violinist, but wouldn't necessarily be an impediment to an accordionist, percussionist, or a guitarist etc. I use an electronic tuner to check my intonation. One sometimes hear people arguing that using a tuner stops you from relying on your ear - but I would argue that using a tuner helps one to train one's ear so that your ear becomes moe reliable. I also use a metronome; the same logic applies.
    I wasted many hundreds of hours in the early stages of my violin project by pressing too hard onto the fingerboard. (I even managed to give myself tendonitis in my left-hand first finger.) I got duff advice about 'pressing firmly' from a TH-cam lesson, and only began to correct this mistake after watching a clip of Yehudi Menuhin teaching at his school in Surrey. "Don't press harder than necessary with your left hand fingers," is one piece of advice that I wish I'd had from the outset. Of course, with all instrumental playing, unnecessary tension is to be avoided. BTW I don't have a teacher, other than myself, of course. I can't afford a teacher I would actually trust. The majority of instrumental teachers are a bit useless IMHO. I was one myself (in four countries) so I consider myself qualified to be scathing.
    I practise every day, usually twice - morning and evening. Most people, of whatever age, who take instrumental lessons 'give up' at some point. It takes either monumental amounts of perseverance and patience, or an extraordinary amount of natural flair, to learn to play any instrument well. One needs to have confidence in the learning process, one needs patience with oneself - and one needs self-discipline and dogged determination when the more lofty motivation and self-actualisation flags. I sometimes find it hard to get started on my daily practise sessions, but once I get going it always proves to be worthwhile. Above all, one must think positively. Negative thinking is the killer. Every time I pick up my violin I try to play better than I've ever played before. Of course, progress is not made in straight lines, but if we practise intelligently and think positively the general trend will be upwards.

    You go, kiddo! I got my first fiddle when I retired at 65 (last week of October, 2018). I never had the opportunity as a child because I was deemed "too old". At the time they wouldn't take you on as a student unless you were ideally aged 5 or so. I was 12. The world of being a violin student has changed for the better, in my opinion. There's a woman, late starter, who got into a symphony orchestra at age 72, so there's hope for all of us!

      It is possible to do Vibrato in such a short period. It depends on the person's skill level and other stuff. I learned vibrato within one month of learning the violin (without skipping any day) and i was desperate to learn vibrato cuz it makes my out of tune stuff sound better when playing infrot of ppl. The way i learnt it in such a short period is by analysing the movement and technical side of it. From the tip of the finger upto the the shoulder to make sure i'm doing the right thing. First few days i almost gave up cuz my finger wouldn't listen to me but suddenly one day i tried it and it worked like a miracle. Well it's not actually a miracle cuz what happened was my body learnt it and built the neccessary things for me to do it and i did it. It's specially very easy for Adult beginner's cuz we understand things better than a little kid.

      @@xaladrez7811 it’s still better to be able to play correctly in tune before you add on vibrato, idk if you have a lessons teacher, but in my lessons I always had to practice vibrato with a tuner and metronome so I only waved my intonation a certain amount and at certain intervals. It takes incredible precision to be able to do the correct amount of vibrato.

    Oh my GOSH! Such impressive progress!! I just started learning cello, but I have two music degrees so it’s kind of cheating lol - your boccherini at the end sounds SOGOOD! If I can offer one thing, maybe just consider REEEAAAAALLLLYYYY slowing down your tempos - there is nothing worse for muscle memory and intonation than just blasting through a piece faster than you can control the sound. It might feel silly at first, but I proooomise it makes a huge difference!

      @jasonwojcik 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      This is great advice for ANY instrument! To add to the comment: I've been playing guitar for quite a while and I started playing the piano. Higher quality output happens when you really slow down and do it as perfect as possible as slow as 45 BPM. It is far easier to fix learned mistakes this way. If you go too fast, you learn mistakes and bad habits along the way. THAT is hard to fix down the road.
      Remember, going slow allows you to build a solid foundation for your house. Otherwise, you are building a house of cards that will collapse at the slightest bump.

      This is sound advice, Scarborough Fair did my knappa in. Slowed down to the point it doesn't sound like anything like the music. Piece by piece (no pun intended) it comes together. Few days later my wife couldn't believe the difference (and she hates the violin) 👍. Martial arts you learn slow for correct form and speed, strength and dexterity comes in your bodies own time.

    That was great progress! I’ve been playing violin for 24 of my 28 years and I really respect people who give it a go (or learn any instrument!) at an older age. It really is very difficult, so always remember how far you’ve come and how much great exercise your brain is getting from practice, no matter how frustrated you are in the moment. You perseverance will continue to pay off. Hopefully playing the violin is something you can enjoy throughout your life!

    Wow! Congratulations! You definitely put in a lot of hard work. I can already tell by week 2 or 3 that you are developing flexibility in your right hand wrist and fingers, which normally takes much longer to develop. Recording yourself consistently is such a wonderful idea to help your playing. I tell students that recording and listening to yourself is like looking in the mirror before you go out. It also allows you to really see how much progress you've made. Bravo!

    same sentiments in the description as well. i always wanted to learn an instrument when i was young, but my mom couldn't afford one back then, now that i have my first violin (although a bad violin), i'm still kinda down bc i don't know if i'm gonna have time for learning and practice due to work. then i thought, "how am i going to keep up with them, this seems impossible, they started when they're so young, i have zero knowledge and no background on music" and so on
    then i also remembered, of course you'll suck at it first, but when you remember the reason why you're practicing (for me: to create and recreate music), this nugget of childlike wonder will help you get better at it.
    this video is really important to me, it made me realize it's never too late. thanks for sharing your journey. thank you. keep practicing!
