    Absolutely one of the best explanation and break down if the issues ive seen, without all the bagging on the motor and VM. Another channel said Italians aren't known for diesels! There is so much bad information out there. VM has been around for 65 years! They invented the rail for diesels, their engines are in vehicles all over the world in multiple manufacturers. 2.8 Duramax, yeah thats a VM motor. Toyota Hillux and LR also VM motors. And this motor was originally concieved and devleoped with GM when they owned a portion of this company. Is this a bad motor? Maybe, but there have been had Power Strokes as well and other manufactures have had fails as well. Obviously this is old and we now know they gave up, but Im ever so curios what is the actual rate of failure of all the issues and recallls? Mine has c hugged along for 7 years and 100K. But im a stickler for oil changes too.

    Very interesting and makes perfect sense. I have a 2015 Ecodiesel. All my diesels before I have on occasion warmed them up, and then on the highway, floored it to clean out the soot. I did that to mine at 60,000 miles and the engine died. Thank God it was still in warranty.

    Very informative information thank you. My father currently has a 2015 ecodiesel with 68,000 miles and actually reprogrammed back the original ECU software a couple years ago to improve the fuel economy.. Truck is only used on long road trips and occasional towing for a small trailer. I probably should mention this to him. Truck has been maintained and babied but the warranty I believe will run out soon.

    Great Explanation of a ECODIESEL Engine issue.
    I have a 2016 RAM 1500 with this engine. At 66,337 miles, the engine failed on me last week (June 13, 2022). No prior signs of trouble.
    Now, I have no ETA for a new engine and I am out of a truck in the mean time. Let me know if your company has a fix for this problem yet. (Please)
    I am a DIY guy but my truck is 5 hrs away from my home shop, it's at a Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, RAM dealership awaiting a new engine. I was driving from LA to SLC on I-15 when it froze up. It was completely seized. Now I am in a pickle. No engines available. No Warranty from FCA..... Ouch.
    Anyone else have this issue? I use my truck with an occasional tow (Small trailers (Snow mobiles, Jet Skis) but mainly my daily driver.
    Let's just say I am a meticulous owner and I do my own oil/maintenance work when ever possible. Also, I had pretty fresh oil change, less than 1,500 miles on the engine oil. I used the recommended 5-40w Full Synthetic, Low Ash European Diesel Shell Rotella T-6 Oil. One dealership I talked to tried to blame it on my abilities to change oil. I also own a Porsche 911 (you know how wound up we are) and I am a perfectionist in the care for my vehicles. Not a chance in hell I put the wrong oil in it. So thanks for this video showing the cause of lower engine failure.
    Let me know if you have any advice for me.
    Thanks
    Shane

    I have a 2017 Larrami 4 X 4 and it’s not a working truck. Had the EGR recall done to it, and use Rotella T6 every 6k miles. Should this type of use reduce the chances of the infamous catastrophic damage that the engines are “known for”? I hope so, really like the truck, thanks.

    Do you have any upgraded crankshafts yet,I’m buying an ecodiesel that has oil pouring out the rear of engine for a very cheap price and was looking for if possible a very nice and solid rebuild that will handle proper high boost and lugging mpg and compound turbo setup possibly,otherwise may retrofit a 4bt for reliability and mpg

    My wife's 2015 ecodiesel just started having issues. A miss and clatter that seems on driver side. Took to one dealer and their fix was just to swing another motor for 15k. They also said had to pull the bed (yes the bed , asked twice) to change motor. I don't think need motor. It stuttered a couple times a red light but cleared up for few weeks. Then stuttered wile at idel after pulling out of garage, she forgot something so ran for few min.and after studdering had a clatter seemingly on driver side. Clatter changes volume, like oil Cushing here and there. Good oil pressure and no codes but CEL is on and won't accelerate when in gear ( had to put into low lock to get on trailer) any advice. Seems like repairable to me.

    Hello Great Information in the Video. I’m going to be 100% honest, I’m a woodworker and know zero about Diesel engines. I got a 2015 eco diesel 7 weeks ago absolute pristine condition used with 100,000 km to use as my company Truck.
    It’s been taken to the shop for engine work 3 times in this timeframe.
    Towed in first for new gaskets on the egr hose.
    Second time the no2 censor needed replacement
    And Final I’m about to go pick it up tomorrow morning for the third time it’s in now for a new crank shaft position censor tone ring.
    It’s been a bad experience to say the least I’ve been trying to learn as much as I can about the engine (in the very little spare time I have)to see what I can do to avoid anymore and I keep coming across more scary story’s all over the place.
    My real question.... should a guy like me keep a vehicle like this or should I be looking to get out of it. Do you think with all the things replaced at this point and me following your advise in the video it can still be a reliable vehicle for me?
    All I’ve been thinking about for a week is this is probably not a great truck to be running my business in but also still absolutely love the truck when it has been running. I bought it with a mindset that a Diesel engine will get more miles than the gas one that was sitting right beside it same year same colour LOL
    The dealership I purchased from has been amazing they paid every single bill so far and hooked me up with a loaner truck so that is the only plus side is all those new parts and labour were paid.

      OK, Guys, I'm the original owner of a 2015 RAM EcoDiesel with over 150,000 (yes, 150k) consisting of about 75% HIGHWAY miles---
      THAT SAID: ZERO engine issues, repairs, or anything engine related (not including exhaust/ DPF issues);
      And am (literally) about to change the ORIGINAL serpentine belt (YES, I KNOW ...DUMB & RISKY not to have changed it yet!)
      BTW, I got 135k miles out of the original FRONT brake pads; REAR pads STILL original, over 150k miles, AND got 90k miles out of the original factory Goodyear SRA 265/70 r17 tires.
      MODS? YES: DEF SYSTEM glitched from about 12,000 miles, DEF consumption CEASED and I LEFT IT UNREPAIRED until 112k miles, at which point it did its VERY FIRST DPF ReGen, then a day or 2 later, it ReGenned again, but not completely before I HAD TO go home and sleep due to exhaustion after a 16-hr day.
      NEXT A.M., the truck DE-RATED and went into LIMP MODE, at which point I had DEF/DPF delete done, with VERY moderate ECM tune plus 30% turbo engine braking programmed into it. MILEAGE STILL as good as from Day One, capable of 30+ MPG highway if I do my part.
      RECAP--- Lucky So Far? --- no disastrous engine problems like so many others, but I have historically kind of "babied" the engine (and truck in general), as in:
      routine easy acceleration AND generally (but not always) allowing engine to do more than 1/2 of slowing me down.
      With so many guys having severe engine problems, am I just lucky? I rarely tow, but have pulled a 12-ft V-nose cargo trailer from Indiana to Dallas and back (20-22 MPG), and towed cars on a trailer a few times, but that's it for towing. Mostly daily driver duties, otherwise.
      Your thoughts?

      @recklessmotorsportsusa3443  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They have never actually proven this to be the exact culprit of these engines, it may help though. Chrysler has taken steps to prevent the lugging as they have determined that to be the cause of breaking cranks in half, well besides the week material of the crank itself lol

    • @zonta71
      @zonta71 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suspect the effects of the harmonic vibrations on the main bearing will generate excessive heat and cook the oil in the bearing oil supply outlet. Vibrations would cause the main journals to move back and forth along the crankshaft not up and down. Would having the cradle redesigned to compensate for the back and forth with reinforced crank thrust washer?

      These engines have been used for a very long time without issue in other vehicles, the bottom end issue was a combination of a weak crank and lugging. Obviously larger bearing surface would help with the crank, but so would a stronger crank. Which is what they did in 2020.

    • @vernlochtefeld1626
      @vernlochtefeld1626 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I'm not sure you can find 3 legit cam sprocket failures since the engines inception. Sean producer of the infamous video later found out that his motor had not failed. They got it fixed for him and he ran it to 190k miles until his next issue.
      The crank harmonics problem with some load at something like 1,300-1,400 rpms I believe was referenced in some FCA documentation If I remember correctly. Crank harmonics is my though as to the main issue with crank squirm and smushing bearing surfaces until one day it just spins one out enough to fail. A common failure statement is; and I baby this truck.
      I tow moderate 1/2 ton appropriate weight commercially with this engine. Average travel trailer being like 6k to 6,500 pounds. First engine pushed a head gasket at 371k. Second engine cracked a head at 423k miles. Friend James does the same his has 452k miles and is also now having cooling issues. If no existing issues a tune & new EGR cooler or EGR cooler delete plus proper maintenance with a good duty cycle (long run times) makes for a pretty reliable motor. Same as with the ones across the pond as they say. Main bearing size doesn't seem to be an issue. Just don't idle around work it.
      For the casual reader this is not in reference to the new ecodiesel but rather the 2014 thru 2019 in the 4th gen body.

      Thanks for all the great information. I just found your video after having my 2018 Jeep GC towed into the dealer with 32K miles on it 5/25/21. Dealer says that the initial indication is rod knock and they’d have to tear it down some more to determine if it’s fixable or an engine swap. I’m still waiting on an answer.
      Just a little history here: the EGR/fire recall was done about 600 miles ago. Of course the driveability changed as well as fuel mileage. Dropped about 3-5 per gallon. I’m hoping that with a new engine, the knocking won’t reoccur.
      I recorded the rod knock and posted it on my page. If you’d care to give it a listen and an opinion I’d really appreciate it.
      My dilemma; do I sell it after it’s fixed because of reliability issues or should I have faith that the replacement crate motor has the bugs worked out of it.
