What Ecodiesel engine failure sounds like? | Eco diesel Knocking | Main Bearing Failure

  • This is to document my experience. Our Eco-diesel had engine failure (main bearing failure) after 59,000 miles of trouble free, well maintained miles. I tow a trailer from time to time (about 4500 Lbs.) All maintenance done on time or early. Always used factory filters and 5w-40 Rotella as recommended in the owners manual. Never driven hard, never any major problems until the engine very randomly died after a routine highway trip. Once at the dealer, they pulled the oil pan to find bearing material everywhere, which started the warranty process for replacement.

    Oil analysis every couple oil changes. I run synthetic and send a sample off every 6000 miles I usually don't change it for 24,000 miles. My truck currently has 310,000 miles. Oil analysis has caught everything for me before it took a shit. I should have been inspecting my u joints. My truck threw the transfer case out the driver's side going 70 down the highway. Transfer case split into 2 pieces joint on 4 wheel drive seized up. Thankfully it chunked it straight across the highway to the ditch and nobody hit it.

      It’s hit or miss with these Ecodiesel engines. I have 112,000 miles on my 2015. Original owner had the AEM and claimed the $3,075 settlement. I did have to replace two turbos, starter, DEF system, three Navigation systems, water pump. The EGR cooler was replaced on recall for leaking coolant.

    • @Fab-ec8os
      @Fab-ec8os 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @Chris C That's the problem. I also used to be a test driver for Audi and tested their diesels and the engineers used to always say how these diesels need to be driven cause of the DPF filter and shouldn't be driven for 20 min then turned off. They need to get hot and driven for a while. Which I do. That's probably why it runs so good. I'm sure if I drove it fo 20 min at a time. I would have problems as well.

      @@boostimalaka1 Damn, some1 totalled my EcoDiesel. It had 200,000 miles. Just changed the DPF filter at 188k which is more then doubled the life expectancy of that, and that's it. Never lost power or anything. Couldn't find another one and have the 5.7 Hemi, which I love, but truly miss the Diesel and would rather have that. I guess it depends on which 1. The diesel are meant to be driven. Driving 10/20 min drives will kill it. And that's only cause of the DPF filter and EGR emission controls.

    I do my own oil changes according to the meter in the truck. I use name brand oils. 5w40 synthetic. No mods to the truck. But I let the oil drain from the pan for about half an hour when really hot. The oil seems to have a little more soot in it during the last moment of draining. A little more black. 175 000kms so far. The main bearing failed due to the EGR. The soot load overwhelms the oils' detergency/dispercency capabilities. The oil polymerizes and completely clogs the passage in the crank and spins the bearing, (usually cylinder 3 or 4). This is a good engine with an Achilles heel that can be dealt with in 2 ways. 1. Shorter oil change interval (5k miles) 2. Add a bypass oil filter with soot filtering capability.
    Original oil weight spec was 5w-30. In 2016 fiat/chrys changed the spec to 5w-40. The jury is still out on this decision. Thicker is not always better.

    I am from Morocco and owner of a 2018 grand cherokee with the same engine than the one you have on your RAM, it is the same engine block from VM Motori, engine code A630, starting 2018 they stopped calling them ecodiesel, I do not know why but that’s not really a problem… This is an excellent engine. I am actually 160.000 km with a quite tough drive habits (high speed on highway, driving on sand…) and the engine is still performing like the early days when purchased the vehicle.1
    In my opinion, the cause of those engines failure might come from the oil change intervals based on the oil change indicator: most of the time, the indicator tells you need to change the oil around 16.000 km (depending on your driving manner) whereas the suitable interval change should only be 10.000 km. In Morocco, the local dealer who is a direct subsidiary of FCA USA, made mandatory to change the oil every 10.000 km and to ignore the oil change indicator of the vehicle.
    Hope this helps,

      I feel like some of the people having problems with this truck also have never owned a diesel...Warm up time is very very important on any diesel. I have not once let my oil change go over 8,500 miles. Its cheap and easy to do on your own. I try to let my coolant temps hit about 100F before I even move the truck...I have about 63,000 mostly trouble free miles besides a couple check engine lights that I cleared myself.

But,idling it for 5 whole minutes can cause more damage than good.. especially in those very cold mornings where the oil is very dense and the oil pump struggles..driving the car at 1200rpm or so would helps the oil pump to work better, oil would flows better and the lubricant would reach every part of the engine warming it up more evenly..every morning you would see me driving the neighborhood at 20 or 30 km/h until the water temperature rises up a little..I don't care if I'm on time or late for work..I just do it! I don’t understand the mentality that 8,000-10,000mi is a good thing *for the engine*. Sure it’s great for the owner - lower operating costs. The fact is the additives in the oil break down far sooner than the base oil does, and those additives include viscosity modifiers. This is what makes multi-viscosity oils work they way they’re supposed to.

Dealer said it was good to go. Then one of our engineers was using it for a weekend and it died in traffic. Told him to get it towed to dealer. Diagnosis = new engine required. Hoping FCA would pitch in, such problems and low miles. NOPE. Waited more than a month. Now looking at options, and in Canada no stock of new motors. Found a long block or used with high kms.
