    I’m in a quilting group that makes QOV quilts. We recently presented our first one and wow! What an incredibly moving ceremony it was! I think this would be an awesome quilt for QOV and easy enough for even our newest quilters to complete without difficulty. Thank you for sharing your designs and making such fun videos to showcase them.

      I agree! I think that QOV is an amazing organization. My father, my father-in-law, brother-in-law, and nephew all served and I have the highest respect for veterans. I would be honored if you used one of my patterns to make a QOV.

    I've never seen anyone do this idea I had, but may I just share, in case you might be interested?
    It's a quilt I made from a super simple block, that ended up with almost like an irish chain design, with pinwheels in the middle.
    Think of a standard nine-patch block.
    Numbers 123 on top, 456 in middle, and 789 on bottom.
    Diagonally on 1, 5, and 9 place solid green squares.
    On 2, 4, 6, 8, place solid white squares.
    On corners 3 and 7 place pink half-square triangles, with white background. The pink triangles should face in opposite directions with narrow points pointing towards the center and the corner.
    When you rotate every other block by 90 degrees, the pinwheel and chain pattern emerges.
    I like to use a scrappy bunch of different pinks and greens to give contrast and sparkle to the chains and pinwheels, like dappled sunlight.
    To me the pinwheels look like flowers, and the chains are perhaps vines, or grassy paths in a garden.
    I've never found this block in any book or any other quilter's channel, so I don't have a name for it.
    I would be terribly thrilled if you might ever feature this pattern! I'm very proud of it and think it is just gorgeous. but it is so simple I think many people would enjoy making it.

    • @QuestioningQuilter
      @QuestioningQuilter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Marialla,
      I just spent a few minutes drawing and playing around with this block. What a great pattern. I love how it makes those cute pink pinwheels. I like the idea with the scraps so that where the 4 chain pieces come together for a block it will have some contrast instead of a solid look.
      I would love to see the quilt.
      It is flattering that you would want me to feature this design and I am taking that as permission to use it. I see so much possibility for this block. I have my next few months planned out but I will definitely add this to the list. I also just tried a little experiment with two blocks. The first is just like you designed. The second is like your design, but blocks 1 and 9 are also white. You still get the pinwheels, but you only get diagonal chains of the green. Ohhh. So many possibilities.
      Thanks so much for the idea!

    • @QuestioningQuilter
      @QuestioningQuilter  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am excited that you made the quilt. As for quilting, it is possible to just use white thread to quilt all the white areas. To go from one white area to another you can cross at the intersections of the diamonds.
      Depending on the batting you may not need to quilt in the stars. If you want to quilt the stars you can pick a neutral color a to quilt inside each diamond. It will be a lot easier to use the same color for the red and blue diamonds, but if you don't mind changing threads you could use red and blue for each of the stars. You can cross into the adjoining diamond at the point.
      Finally, and I have trouble doing this, you could pick a medium light neutral thread and don't worry about cutting through the design. Once you step back from the quilt a few feet, the design will show through just fine.
      Whichever technique you use I am sure it will be beautiful.
      I would love it if you sent me a picture of the finished quilt. brita@questioningquilter.com

    Hi Brita, I'm kinda loss on this pattern. I'm making a quilt of valor using this pattern but I need the size of the square I'll use to make the 5" HST block. Do I use 5" squares or bigger? Please help. Thanks.

    • @QuestioningQuilter
      @QuestioningQuilter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Betty,
      I generally add 1/2" to the size of the "unfinished" HST to get the size of the starting block, then trim to size.
      So, for a 5" HST, I would start with 5 1/2" squares. I would normally trim these down to exactly 5" X 5" because my HST's always come out a little wonky. Truthfully, I sometimes make the block 5 3/8" so that there is a little more to trim off.
      If yours come out really good and you don't want to trim them, then you can just use them as is. They maybe 1/8" bigger than 5" depending on your seam allowance. The size of the HST isn't critical to this quilt. Four HST's go together and make the Harlequin blocks and so long as they are all the same size, everything will be good. That is one of the great things about this pattern.
      I am happy to hear that you are making a Quilt of Valor. I think this is a great organization. I would love to see a picture of this when it is done.
      If you have any more questions, please feel free to email me: brita@QuestioningQuilter.com.

    I'm missing something. You give the size of the hst but don't say what size you cut the square to get to that hat size.

    • @QuestioningQuilter
      @QuestioningQuilter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jan,
      I am sorry about that. If you want to use squares to make the 5" HST's you will start with 5 1/2" squares of light and dark fabric. Draw a line down the center, sew a scant 1/4" on either side of the line then trim to 5". The general rule of thumb is that to take the unfinished size of a HST and add 1/2" to get the size of the starting block. Once made, you will then trim to the final unfinished size. If you can make a perfect HST (I can't) then the math is to add 3/8" to the unfinished size and you wouldn't have to trim. I'm not able to do this, mine are NEVER perfectly square.
      I don't always say the size of the starting block because there are so many different ways to make HST's. My personal favorite is to make 8 HST's from a larger block. I show this method at this spot in the video: th-cam.com/video/MSQfB1wwrRU/w-d-xo.html
      The calculation for the 8 at a time method is to take the unfinished HST, in this case 5". Add 1/2" to make 5 1/2". Then multiply that by two, so you would need a large square that measures 11" X 11". There are multiple other methods for making HST's and I want my viewers to use whatever method they like best.
      I hope that this helps.
      Let me know if you have any other questions.
      Brita
