The Boxster is a half-price 911. And it’s better.

- After driving a Porsche 992 911 Carrera S for three days, I decided to buy a pre-owned 981 Boxster Base with PDK. Along all the same roads, it beat the 911 in more ways than expected. So, this is my love letter to this utterly brilliant machine.

Thank you. Nice to see passion for something other than money or prestige. In the last two years I have purchase 2 982s one Cayman, one Boxster vs 1 911. I joke about Porsche and Audi paying for the sins of doing wrong for so long by producing the money loosing(I could be wrong) R8, Boxster and Cayman. The 911 has too much of a nostalgia driven price premium . 911, best car made right yet doing it wrong. I still have my V8 Audi RS5.
@@DontTellMeMore Thank you - I appreciate that. Your Audi makes one of the most glorious V8 sounds ever created.
"Touch screens suck, I hate the bastards" Best and most accurate statement I've heard On TH-cam in a long, long, time. 👍
John!! I love your website! Thanks to you, I had years of wallet-emptying fun learning to crash (and sometimes fly) RC helicopters! So nice to see you here, and thank you for all the amazing content you’ve built and shared on your website over so many years. 👍🦘
@@peterfritzphoto It's a small world mate! So nice of you to comment back with the kind words; especially considering those damn RC helicopters were one of wallet sucking interests - lol. Sounds like we are very like minded as I've been a Porsche nut for almost as long as I've been an RC Heli nut. Currently have a 99 986 that I got from the Jag dealership I worked at back in 2001 from a good customer and have loved it all these years. Had an older 73 911T before, and while it was still a very fun car and blast to drive, I just found the 986 to be a much more enjoyable all round experience. Kinda wish I kept the 911 however considering they are now fetching into the 6 figures here in Canada, and I only got a fraction of that when I sold it. Even 912's are fetching crazy coin now. Anyway, subbed and can't wait to watch more of your top notch content. So true, about life being bloody short. I just turned 56 and not sure where the years have gone? Enjoy every moment in your 981 - such a beautiful car!
@@Rchelicopterfun Thanks so much, John. Yes, the time sure does fly. I discovered you over a decade ago, and got so much joy out of that whole learning experience. Your knowledge and enthusiasm (and your guides) were invaluable. So true about the old cars getting crazy money. I’ve seen 993s here for over $1M! I’m heading back to your channel, now. Chatting to you has ignited that old spark again…
I realised that LIFE IS SHORT 5 years ago when I was 38, the day I lost my little angel when she was a little less than 2yo. I promised her I would live and enjoy my life to the fullest for her and for her little sister...until the day we meet again. Since then, I sold my A250 and bought myself a M340i. Boxter is definitely the next on my list. Thanks for the inspiring video Peter!
Oh, I’m so sorry; that truly breaks my heart. I admire your mindset and your commitment to really living, though. More power to you, mate. 💙
To be honest, I’m so glad to hear a genuine owner talk about their own car. The large majority of the car reviews simply can’t take into account what it is like on a day to day.
True. Unfortunately, I can only own one Porsche at a time! 🙂
100% can't stand those guys. The amateur YT guys are usually better and more likable than the "experts" as well since they're more genuine and have less advertiser pressure and editors-in-chiefs telling them what they can and can't do. I worked for Motor Trend for years on the tech side, and know all about that lol. On the other hand some pro guys went amateur, then turned "pro" again on their own like Doug Demuro (he's got a Lambo now etc etc), which is cool to see because he's taking home the cash not some dumb publisher.
Nicely done. As a 911 owner I’m obviously biased, but your philosophical views are spot on. Life IS short after 50, so absolutely drive something cool. The Boxster is certainly a great choice - never less than an excellent drive.
Thanks a lot, Jon.
Ditto, Jon…!
Life is short, I had stroke at 60, just purchased 2011 boxter and the smile has not left my face since. Make the most if possible
@@kevin2true582 Good on you, Kevin!
As someone in their early 20s this comment worries me lol. And then you think about how not everyone even makes it up to that age. Perspective
Peter is 110% correct - I sold my motorbikes and bought a 2007 987 Boxster 2.7 manual 5 speed - £10k - 106k miles - I love every minute behind the wheel - its about how it feels to drive and how it looks and sounds - no other non - porsche compares - in todays world buy one now before its too late.
Thanks, Mark.
Is servicing expensive, what about reliability for an older Porsche
@@Gamumee As I mentioned in the video, it's no more expensive than my Mistubishi Pajero. And definitely cheaper than my last few Benzes. Porsche charge too much to do brakes, I reckon, so I had those done elsewhere for a third of the price. These post-2009 Porsches are known to be very reliable, so long as you maintain them correctly.
@@Gamumee there are plenty of independent Porsche specialists - although official service intervals are 24 months apart and go minor £250 / major £350, older cars benefit from an annual inspection - many parts are no more than a regular german car and it depends where the car is in terms of its maintenance / mileage - many specialists like revolution porsche have a menu of prices on line - I would say that you need to be prepared to spend on upkeep but its not prohibitive and they are very well built - service history is important with Porsche - if the car is 2000 - 2006 its important to have had IMS bearing replaced or budget for this with clutch change. I would have about £1500 spare after buying any Boxster unless its service history is right up to date.
My wife has the Boxster GTS 4.0 and I have a 991.1 GT3. I must say, I agree, I like driving her Boxster more than mine GT3.
Wow - that’s quite the endorsement! Thanks for sharing that.
@@peterfritzphoto I daily drove a used 1998 986 with track pkg... Fully agree, steering feel, ability to finesse or even bully the tail out with power on over steer even with the 2.5L was just unbeatable experience. The 986 would come around nice in a turn if you just jiggled the steering wheel a bit to unsettle it, and follow through with throttle. No nanny's on that model. I regret selling it to this day, and thanks to your vid, going to look for a newer H6 boxster. Thanks for sharing what I've always felt too! Make sure to keep a healthy tire budget, and I had better luck running nitrogen in the tires.

Clayton, you just made my whole day. Thank you.
True. Great guy.
Damn straight. You are a man who has realized his priorities in life, and I also totally agree with your comments regarding spending a bit less - plus you get a fantastic modern classic vehicle for a bargain price these days, and it just happens that vehicles from the greatest era of the automobiles are approaching or at the bottom of their depreciation curve. Tactile switches (and ergonomics in general) are a vastly underrated area of engineering that was perfected by the 1990s (and forgotten by the 2010s, so it seems)
This has been true for a while in my opinion! I went from a Boxster S to a 911 C4S. The Boxster isn’t as quick, but it’s more fun, sounds better (blasphemy!), and handled better.
If I didn’t need somewhere to put a 3yr old, I’d still be in the Boxster.
Rinse your mouth out with soapy water!! I agree. 😄

Dude you’re so right, life’s short and so if you can afford it, just do it. I’m happy to say after waiting for 40 years lusting for a Porsche, I finally pull the trigger and bought a GTS 4.0. The truth is I came to the realization that I only have today as tomorrow is not guaranteed so I decided to enjoy the rest of my life and what better way than in Boxster GTS 4.0.
I’ll be posting some videos of it in the channel 2 Brothers Life and cocktails.
The car is arriving June 13.
Great video Peter!
Woohoo - congratulations! I was just reading about the GTS 4.0 tonight, and wow, what a machine; the perfect Boxster. Good on you, mate! 👍
Over the years I have had the chance to drive every Porsche model from the original 356 Speedster to the Carrera GT and 918 Spyder, and I currently own a 2018 GT3 Clubsport manual and a 1981 911SC. I regard the Boxster GTS 4.0 as the perfect all-round two-seat roadster and one of the best Porsches ever made, so well done you! One thing most people don't realise is that the Boxster is more relaxed than the Cayman over distance because its cabin has much less road noise. While the sloping rear deck and glass hatch panel amplify the road noise behind your head, road noise just goes up through the canvas roof and out of the car. I noticed this consistently over the years when driving Boxster and Cayman models back-to-back on Porsche launch events.
@@iankuah8606 You’re clearly an experienced Porsche aficionado, Ian, and I really appreciate your insights. Very interesting regarding noise levels in the Cayman. I do love how quiet the Boxster is on long freeway drives, so that kind of info is very useful. Thanks again, Ian. 👍
@@peterfritzphoto Cheers Peter. I am European Editor of Excellence, the American Porsche Mag, and live in Spain and the UK. I was a founding contributor to 911 & Porsche World and Total 911 magazines in the UK and I drove my first 911 in 1979! The only downside of the Boxster/Cayman duo is that Porsche does not offer a front-lift suspension option, which is a problem in places with lots of speed humps and steep ramps. That is mystifying since it shares the McPherson front end with the 991, which does have a front-lift option. I learned this when I was trying to spec a 718 Spyder with the Press Department in Germany. The problem became irrelevant when I was offered the GT3 (with front-lift!) at a very good price as its owner had been posted back to his home country. It was an offer I could not refuse, and it would have been rude to say no!
@@iankuah8606 Haha! Yes - rude, indeed! Ian, I’m extremely chuffed that a person with such a deep Porsche history would take the time to watch my humble video, and offer so many interesting insights as well. Your comments here have added a real bounce to my cold Melbourne winter morning.
If I could buy a Porsche, it would be a Cayman.
I had real trouble deciding between the Boxster and Cayman. I’ll enjoy this Boxster for at least a few years, but I reckon it’ll be the Cayman next time around. 👍
GTS 4.0 is the unicorn
@@dirkcurritzki9585 Absolutely. That would be my 'lifetime car'.
But a convertible is so much fun!!!
@@i1pro True, and every time I start thinking the Cayman might be my next Porsche, I remember how awesome it is to drive a coast or mountain road with the roof down. Plus, according to some owners, here, the Boxster is actually quieter than the Cayman with the roof up.
Don’t give up on the dream.
I did a 911 via Porsche drive for a month to “get it out of my system“ assuming it wouldn’t be worth it. I ended up buying one 2 weeks in. I had 2 for about 2 weeks. A year and a half later I don’t have any regrets. Porsche is a masterclass in product management and marketing. They’ve perfectly captured an additional new segment of the market without canabalizing the 911 segment.
They certainly have. And thanks to the Boxster (and later, the Cayenne), the Porsche business not only survived, but went on to greater and greater heights.
I like this. Long distance Loping and B Road Thrashing….
Indeed the Boxster is a lovely car.
Thanks, Shankar.
Great video - I have both a 911 and a Boxster and drive around the UK and Europe in both racking up 35k miles a year. The Boxster is always the preferred choice. Enjoy your car and relish the adventures. ❤
Thank you, Martin, I certainly will - especially the ones with my boy. That’s a huge number of miles each year! 👍
981? Do you think the base is enough? I'm in the uk as well
@@Jay-xr3sb Absolutely, Jay. It’s more than enough. The difference between the base and the S from 0-100 is 0.7 sec. It’s nothing. And on a winding mountain or coastal road, it’s just as good as any other Porsche.
@@peterfritzphoto thanks Peter, nice video and outlook on life in general.
I had similar thoughts, ditch a few personal items (watches), and have a bit of top down fun. May have to try the 718 S, but they are still coming down in price, cheers
@@Jay-xr3sb The 718 looks great, but unless you pony up the money for the 6-cylinder version, you miss 50% of the Boxster magic - the sound and feel of the engine. The 4-cylinder version is fast, but speed is only a small part of the driving experience. As for watches, I've narrowed my humble 'collection' down to two nice ones, and three bangers. The thing is, I wear the same watch 99% of the time, so the rest are a bit of a waste.
Peter, I have to tell you, I feel like you were speaking to me directly the last few minutes of this video. Thank you. This was spot on. Makes me wish I had more garage space.
Thank you, James. That’s a huge compliment.
The Porsche dealers in USA sales persons laugh at men who drive Boxters because they are girls cars. So no guy will touch a Boxter. 😂😂😂 Blame Porsche USA dealerships
Your video hit home on so many levels, Peter. I've been debating for a long while if I want to purchase another Boxster. I sold my 987.2 just before COVID in hopes of upgrading to a 981. Since then, a lot of "life" has happened. Lots of ups and downs from the passing of my mom to the birth of my grandson. I am a similar age as you and have decided to move forward because life is short and you gotta work hard to play hard! Thank you!
Good on you, Jerry. Yes, I know what it means for life to get in the way of living... You look way too young to have a grandson!
I used to own a 2005 Boxster 987.1 and got to test drive a 2012 base 981 when it came out only to walk away disappointed from the driving experience. Most of the feel was lost due to the electric steering and the new model just felt more sedated. Now if you want a more modern car go for it. But I always find these Porsche enthusiast funny, like no one mentioning how from 2009 onward the cars only got worse to drive. Driving a Bmw M4 convertible now and a Jag Ftype V6s (very underrated car). Will only consider returning to Porsche to buy an older model , 997 and under.
@@robertcalinescu78 I’ve only driven a 987 in an urban environment, so I don’t know how it compares to the 981 on my favourite kind of road (mountain).
I had my heart set on a 911 and was going to buy a 997 C2S but after test driving a few 997s I realised that I didn’t like the super light feeling on the steering. The dealer suggested I try a Boxster and I ended up trying a 981 Boxster S. I completely fell in love and I’m now on my second one after the first was written off by a dozy taxi driver. I try not to drive it too often as I want it to continue to feel special. I don’t know if I’ll ever sell it as it’s more than powerful enough for the road and is my ideal spec of manual gearbox with PTV, PASM, PSE, sport chrono and it’s a pretty unique colour too, being Gulf Orange. I’ve driven 991 911s too and as I don’t need rear seats, just seem less practical and they don’t handle as well. I agree that it’s not as pretty as a 911, but as a car to do lengthy European road trips in it’s hard to beat.
@@thesushifiend I’m really happy for you. The 981 would look amazing in that shade, too!

A true love letter and amazing story of yours - cheers! They say never to meet your heroes and in my case that was true. I drove a 911 Targa (992) for a day and while it was an amazing machine and a sight to see, it didn’t evoke the emotion and thrill I was hoping for. I received a call from my local Porsche dealer regarding a 718 Spyder they had received - that was thee sight to see and in my opinion, one of thee most beautiful of all Porsches I have seen. From engine startup to the character of the Spyder including the handling of the manual top - it truly felt special and like an event. She is black with a Bordeaux Red top with the Spyder Classic interior. To this day, she is the car to drive and after years of hard work, I’ve finally achieved my dream of owning a Porsche. Life is truly short and money is only money; you can always make more of it - dare to live your dream! What an inspiration - great video!
Brilliant comment, Alex! That’s exactly how I felt after driving the 992 Carrera S. Your car sounds absolutely perfect.
I bought a 964 a couple of years back and in my view it provides a lot of the neck hair-raising experience the newer cars lack.
@@jonwarshawsky5288 I totally get it. I started road testing and photographing cars in the late 80’s, and driver aids were a rarity (and crude when present). There was definitely an analogue tactility to cars back then - and a bit of fear when driving the faster ones (Cosworth Sierra, Porsche 930, MKV Supra). The 964 was the first 911 I ever drove. Fond memories. 👍
Oh I love the Spyder. Good choise. I have a cayman S 981. And the spyder high on my list of Dream cars. Congrats ans enjoy!
I was about to hit 54 and wanted something to strive for to keep me interested in working through 59 or later. Like you, I thought 911. Then, the more I looked into it the more I realized I'd actually prefer a Boxster. It's taken me 2.5 years and a divorce to put me in a position to do something about it, but my personally spec'ed 718 Boxster GTS with PDK and most of the options is due to be delivered on 11/17. It's not the 911 my 12-year-old self would have picked, but it's more usable as a daily, has more performance than you can possibly use on the street, has a drop top (which I use all the time in my 335i convertible) and the handling of a mid-engine exotic . I am so excited.
Bill, you have every reason to be excited! Bravo, mate! Bravo. 👍🦘
For a moment I thought you were talking about my life, 2 divorces and all. 😂
I found the Boxster by accident during COVID, after realizing the Miata I was driving was killing my shoulder.
I am lucky enough to own 2 now, and don’t think I’ll ever sell them.
Both mine are 20 years old, but are quite solid, and look great. Top down daily to & from work is a 30 minute holiday.
It’s a lovely way to clear the mind.
Drive it like you stole it, and it’s even more fun.
Life is short,
@@Gr8Pony Beautifully said, Roger.
I have owned a ‘13 981 Boxster S for over two years and absolutely love it!
I also have the PDK and Sports Chrono package as well as a lot of other options.
I looked for almost six months for this particular iteration of this wonderful roadster.
It cost $30,000 less than comparable’13 911’s, but weighes ~250 lbs less, handles better and gets better gas mileage to boot.
I had it shipped across the US after finding it in my brothers home town and he checked it out and I have a warranty so no worries- and zero problems after 15,000 miles and a bazillion smiles.
Some things only some Porschephiles know- This car is made on the same assembly line as the 911 and shares something like half its parts with it. My S model has the same engine and transmission, most of the interior and electronics and front suspension. It’s built to the same quality standard and imo is easily the best value in a sports car anywhere.
You summed it up beautifully, William. Some very good points, here.
Having driven and professionally repaired all of the vehicles that are mentioned in this video, I agree. I love them all but in my case the Boxster is my fav Porsche. It is the Sunday Paper, Pipe, and Slippers of the Sports Car world. Pure enjoyment to drive.
Such a good way to put it. Thanks, Bob.
Great Review; I agree. I've had 3 911s ( 996, 991.2, and currently a 992.1. ) and a 718 Boxster. The 718 was my favorite to drive of all
Thanks for the kind words, Mark. I always enjoy insights backed by real-world experience - like yours.
I just looked at the specs and curb weight on a Boxster w/PDK is 3,082 vs 3,614 on a 992.1 PDK C4 Cab. Boxster obviously not as fast in a straight line or on a track but the lighter weight makes it feel very quick and agile around town and on country roads
@@markcastiglione1607 Indeed. Both cars are extraordinary, but the mid-engined models feel more lithe.
I’m 21, loved the Boxster since I first saw a 986 aged about 3
I recently bought myself a 987.2 Boxster S which was somewhat of a stretch financially but I’ve made more memories in 6 months with this car than I think I made 6 years before it
They’re such energetic, fizzy, happy cars that just encourage you to go out and have fun 😁
Wow, that's amazing! Good for you, mate!
Had my 987.2 Boxster S for 12 years and could not agree more. It's still a blast after all that time and cost me next to nothing in depreciation (GBP 6k) or maintenance. Have thought about getting a 981 but I think I'd be looking at very marginal gains.
@@gcbadger it’s a strange dilemma 😂 not sure how to upgrade because there’s not much out there that delivers the same package without spending at least double

@@gcbadger I suspect you’re right.
@@bwdrives I’m in the same boat, now. Totally agree.
I am on my 2nd Boxster, having bought a 99 Boxster 24 years ago. I bought my 2013 Boxster S a year and a half ago. Having avoided some of life's pitfalls, such as divorce (or even marriage), I can afford a 911, at least an older one. But, I couldn't get past the notion that it was paying for things I did not need. Indeed, the S is exactly what I wanted, and nothing beats the sound of a Porsche 6 roaring towards redline. I love the choice I made.
Sounds very wise to me, Dave. Thanks for dropping in.
Same, couldn't justify spending 30% more on a 991 Carrera, absolutely love the 981S.
Don't forget to pick out your coffin before picking up your 911. Unless, of course, you consider yourself a self proclaimed 'expert driver' that is a master of driving a car likely to get you killed when you try to drive too fast, and then choose the wrong way to slow down a bit; you know, the ones who crash backwards into buildings and such, and then your family can pick it out for you
@@d.e.b.b5788 LOL. Maybe the old ones, but the new ones are pretty benign.
As a fellow 981 2.7 (6 speed MT) with PSE owner I completely agree. I did the Porsche Experience drive day and, while I loved driving the 911, it really hit home how large they have become. Your comments on the aesthetics of the 911 and 981 are spot-on. I would add, though, that the rear of the 911 cabrio is not a thing of beauty - comparing the two top-down models comes out firmly in favour of the 981. I also agree that spending on things that bring personal reward, rather than for status, is a great investment. I plan to keep mine for the rest of my days.
You’re a wise man, Stephen. I agree with your sentiments re the 911 cabrio’s bum, although the latest version looks cleaner than past iterations. But side-on, the Boxster is still much better than the 911 Cabrio.
Been two years with my 987 and love every drive. Makes me chuckle when non-PCar guys poo-poo it being “just a boxster” and not a 911, but for those that know, know. So so happy with it. Great summary
I so agree, JW - "Those who know, know." Thanks for the generous comment.
This was the most heart-felt, emotional, inspirational car video I’ve ever seen, THANK YOU!
Joshua, thank you! Wow.
drove a 718 once, absolutely awesome little car with humble power ratings
Great video Peter, a man after my own heart! I completely relate to your life experiences and share your thinking on the whole Porsche experience. I purchased my first Porsche, which was also a Boxster (987) after my divorce. After 5 years of motoring pleasure and travelling across Europe in it, I traded it in for my dream Porsche, a Cayman 981 which blows me away every time I drive it! :)
Sounds wonderful! Good for you, Nik. 👍
I own one of the last manual 6 cylinder Boxster , took a long time to find a white version but I could not be happier with the purchase. I fully agree with most of the opinions you have written so no point in me repeating these. I started 2 seater convertible owning with a MGF in 2001 which changed to a MGTF 160 in 2003, a succession of MG’s followed, my son was in need of a car so he took ownership of my last MGTF and I tried an Audi TT roadster very disappointing with a turbo engine, my wife gave in and let me start the successful Boxster search. Now the point I have just passed my 77 th birthday, 73 year old when I purchased my 4 year old Boxster, I have no intention of changing this car as I get more pleasure from the Boxster than anything else now or the smaller time available in the future that will occur, I am a Nikon user but photography interests me and days of equipment rivalry have long gone.
Thank you for this generous comment. I also owned an MGF! I didn't particularly like it, but I felt pretty cool at the time. I'm so glad you're enjoying your life in a brilliant car. As for the camera gear, most of my professional career was with Nikons - an FE2, then an F3, an F100, a D90, and then finally a D750. I loved every one of them - especially the F100 and my 300mm F4.
As a Porsche fan on his third Boxster I couldn’t agree more with your conclusion. I always wanted a 911 and bought my first Boxster because I couldn’t afford one. I moved on to a 911 when opportunity presented itself but never really bonded with it to the same extent. My current Boxster is a 981 GTS and it’s a fantastic car that I can’t imagine parting with.
Thanks for chiming in, Paul. It seems the GTS is the absolute sweet spot. I think it'll have to be my next car. 🙂
8:50 Nothing like the feel of well made mechanical tactile buttons. Things that move when you touch them. Things that you can feel with your hand while you keep your eyes on the road...there's nothing better than that, touch screens suck, I hate the bastards. Perfectly expressed, in Australian. I said the same thing about touch screen only phones: I used to operate my push button phones in the dark and or while driving without having to look at them or FEAR touching the screen inadvertently when I pick up the phone taking me to a whole 'nother place from which I could not return short of pulling over! 986.2 S owner here and I couldn't agree more as I initially compared a 996 Cabrio and 986.1 on twisty roads and preferred the dance with the 986!
Haha! I admit, I was slow to the touchscreen phone party, too. I loved my Nokia E71 for the same reasons!
I agree 100%.
I had a 981 (base, PDK) for 5 years, put 175k kilometers on it.
Each time it needed a service the Porsche dealership gave me a 911 for 1 day. Apart from having more power at the top-end I never thought it brought me more fun than than my little boxster.
If you can live with having the smallest Porsche it is a truly rewarding car.
The irony is the 981 is larger than the earlier 911’s. Thanks for dropping in, Jorg. 👍
I love my 981 S and would never sell it. It’s such a beautiful looking car plus the power is fantastic 👌🏽. Super video! Thank you. 😊
Thanks for stopping by, D. 😄
Your words about getting hit home with me. Last year i was thinking the very same thing. After years of putting of the purchase of buying a Porsche I finally pulled the trigger. I wish i would have done this years ago but you know how it is. You and i are in the same age group, currently 57 and at this point in life you definitely start thinking more about how much time is left. Thank you for a very inspirational message
Thank you very much, mate. Yes, we have to live while we're alive. It's not always easy, but we must remind ourselves how quickly it could all end.
@@peterfritzphoto Five years ago I had a heart attack. Shortly afterwards I bought a Cayman :)
@@prof_tim Smart man. About 20 years ago, I had a heart attack, too - thanks to the worst client ever. I fired him the next day, and a year later, a class action was launched against him and his companies. Soon after that, his wife divorced him and took him to the cleaners. I don't work for arseholes anymore. 🙂
Congrats on the Boxster. Review is right on.
When I decided to get a P car 9+ years ago, I test drove the 981cs (manual) and a base 991 (pdk) back-to-back on the same route. I just felt more at home with the 981, had more fun, and more engaging. I couldn't put my fingers on why. Throughout the week after the test drive I kept thinking about the Cayman. So, I went back to submit the order and did not regret one bit since. Took it to the track and had so much fun.
Had a chance to get a gt4 back in 2020 but due to covid (potential bad economy) I gave up the spot. Minor regret.
Very much my experience, too. The GT4 is very special indeed. From what I’ve seen, it even puts the GT3 to shame.
Beautifully honest. 55 years of age, in 2 short weeks, no where near able to afford any kind of porsche, however, i stll dream. thank you for keeping my dream burning.
Thank you, Donald. And sorry it took me so long to reply.
your lore must be insane. love your video!
I’ve had several 911’s back to back. When I got them serviced they usually gave me a boxster courtesy car and other than lower power it was always better to drive.
I agree, my best mate has got a carrera 4s & I've got a 981 gts the Cayman is way more fun & a better car all round,
Reminds me of the original 911, lightweight fun & fast enough 👍
Congratulations on the Boxster! These cars, truly are great cars for the value. You couldn't have said what you said in this video any better. I believe all your comments, thoughts and beliefs were spot on! Thanks for sharing this video.
Thank you, John!
Couldn’t agree more. I have a 981 Cayman base with sports exhaust and 20’ wheels. The howl from the engine gets me every time and everyone comments on how it looks. The driving experience is sublime. If you can, you must.
@@stevebell9496 Thanks a lot, Steve.
Thank you for an insightful video. I just turned 40, and I am shopping for a car for the next chapter in my life. Your perspective on Porsche expanded my options. Thank you once again.
Wonderful! Thanks, Vincent.
I'm fed up with paying the Australia tax. However, when the ZO6 C8 Corvette Convertible becomes easily available, I'll be buying one.
That car is a bargain.
I also had the red Honda XR-75 and hadn't felt as alive until I bought my Cayman. MY dream had been an air cooled 911 but they're out of reach. I don't feel at all that I've settled for the Cayman. but instead simply marvel at the amazing value the 981 brings without the IMS or bore scoring issues. I have a 2016 and it's the last year for the flat 6 so I'm even more blessed to have it. I appreciate the sentiment you've expressed about owning this car guilt free. Something I still struggle with. Thanks for the great video!
Thank you, Robert. Wow - you’re the first person I’ve met who also owned an XR75! Damn, I wish I’d keep it - I’d park it in my office! As for your Cayman, I think you’ve ended up with the perfect machine. Keep it long enough for the guilt to subside. 👍
Just about the best car review I've seen (or, stumbled on).
Why?
For once, none of that horsepower or torque vectoring to fuss over. (Sure, they're important to make sure you're buying a solid machine that's just what you've been looking for - but which Porsche isn't?) Instead, it's about how the car satisfies your daily wants and needs, and this video has hit every relevant button. I happen to be just researching the benefits that are meaningful to me in my next/last Porsche - a coupe - and the 911 and Cayman boxster are precisely the two I'm eyeing. (I'm in the same age bracket as you Mr Fritz, just a tad older.) So this review is almost 80% of that research in one elegant video.
I’m very touched by your generous words, thank you. Clearly, behind @kindface is a kind person.
This is so right on. I might have thought you were being paid by Porsche if I didn't own a 981 myself :) It's all the car most people would ever want or need. The 981 is a real sweet spot for Porsche. Lots of modern tech but that sense of tactile awareness and analog that you speak about so eloquently. Keep enjoying your Boxster.
Thanks, Robert. Likewise.
I test drove the 718 & 981 but the 981 makes you feel so special, the flat 6 engine noise no dpf filtering the exshaust,
I love it it's amazing
@@pauldavies7251 I just drove mine to a motor trimmer today - on urban streets - and you’re so right. That sound is intoxicating.
Awesome Video - I purchased a fully optioned 981 boxster (75k sticker) base about 3 months ago and it's just an amazing car. Car isn't the fastest in the straight line but nothing can beat carving the roads with the top down.
In a nutshell! It’s just brilliant. Have fun! 👍😄
Well done assessment!
I echo your sentiments after owning: 997.1S, 987.1CS, 981B.
The base 981 Boxster has been THE best all-arounder of the bunch.
With the top down, it takes the Porsche experience to another level.
Although easier on the wallet, I chose the base model because it’s actually the more satisfying option for the street. For the driving enthusiast, it is worth saying the 981B gives you the same Porsche attributes in a car that you can wring out without seeing triple digits. In fact, from a purely visceral driving standpoint, with the top down, and taking the additional ticks to run through the RPM range, I’d argue that the 2.7 with its distinctive sound is the most satisfying of the bunch.
The secret is out! 😁
You hit on a few really good points, here. Thanks for sharing your own experiences. 👍
I have a 718 and love it. It's everything you expect in a Porsche and is a thrill to drive.
Good for you, Mike! Is it a four or a six? I'm tempted to rent one of the fours at some point.
@@peterfritzphoto It's a four with a manual transmission. Has plenty of power and, contrary to some, sounds great.
@@mikeb2777 Good on you, Mike. I’ve heard others say the same about the sound. After all, the WRX sounds pretty good, and I suspect the Boxster sounds a whole lot better. 👍
Couldn’t agree more. I bought my cayman 981 thinking a 911 would follow next. 4 years later and i’ll stick with the 981 thanks ❤👍
Yes, I now find myself lusting after a 718 GTS 4.0 or 25th Anniversary more than a 911 Carrera S. Two years ago, I'd never have believed that.
100% agree with all of your observations and rationale for going with a 981 Boxster rather than the 911. I made a similar choice for the same reasons when I bought my 2014 Boxster S PDK (Rhodium Silver with Carrera Red full leather interior). I look for every excuse I can to drive it, top down, and strangers frequently approach me to tell me how great the car looks. Many mistake it for a 2021 or 2022 model and can't believe its almost 10 years old. If I ever move "up" to a 911, it will be because we want to be able to take a passenger (or a dog) with us in a rear seat (such as they are), and it will be a cabriolet model. But I don't see that happening any time soon. The 981 is such great "bang for the buck," I'm not really even tempted to consider a change. Thanks for the great video!
Thanks a lot, Jax. The silver and red is my dream combo! The brochure images were burned into my brain long before I finally got mine. Sadly, none in that colour combo were available when I was ready to buy. I reckon most people would assume a 981 is a current model car - the design is still fresh.
Just over a year ago I bought a guards red 2015 Boxster GTS with a manual transmission after shopping for eight months for the right car at the right price. It is, without a doubt, the finest car I've ever owned. Sure, there are faster cars out there, but when it comes to handling and sheer driving fun it just can't be beat. I get compliments every day I drive it because it's simply gorgeous and people recognize quality and style when they see it.
Life is short. Drive a little red sportscar.
So well said, Scott. I actually wanted a Guards Red one myself, but just couldn’t find one that I could afford with the Sport Chrono. I’m hoping my next Porsche (ideally a GTS!) will be the same colour as yours. Thanks for watching. 😄

I learned how to drive a manual gearbox in a 986.1 Boxster. I love the balance and feel of those early cars. I eventually bought a 996 because I always wanted a 911. But I often think about getting a Boxster because they're just so darn fun to drive. Great video, dude!
That’s so cool. I learned to drive a manual in a shitty old Mazda van! Thanks for dropping by, Cory.
Great video - I enjoyed it! A lot of it hit home with me. First bike - '79 Honda XR80, current fun car 981 Cayman S 6-speed in Guards Red, black interior, age 55. I agree about the great value of the Boxster/Cayman cars. I could see them being even more highly coveted as the current ones are replaced by what is to come. I think Porsche should keep the mid-engine cars ICE along with the 911. I'm really happy with the one I have.
I couldn’t agree more, Randy. It seems the only thing different between us is I look 55 and you look 35. Bastard. 😄

Cars have been my passion since I could read, even though it's an older model, something so boyish about pressing the sports exhaust button and hearing the warble at low speeds makes me enjoy it all the more. Thanks for the grounding video, you basically nailed what I said when I bough the car about percentage of experience to price, they had an S model and newer 'better versions' but all I wanted was the base 2.7l.

congrats on your decision, but 911 is 911..
Yes it is. But for where and how I drive, the Boxster is the best choice. I know this because I drove all the same roads in both cars, and the Boxster was more fun, more engaging, and more reassuring in those conditions. The 911 is a brilliant GT car. I still might buy one, but in the mountains, the Boxster and Cayman are the preferred platform. For me, and many others who've echoed the same sentiments.
I remember I could of bought an unlimited amount of boxters for around €7 to €10k here in Ireland back in the day, people weren’t prepared to pay the the outrageous upkeep and servicing cost for them. Excellent video dude really enjoyed it and was very informative.
Thanks, Shane.
Great video. I bought a new 2.7 981 with sports exhaust and put 100k miles on it. It did everything you’d ever want a car to do, sounded incredible and returned over 40mpg on a run. When it came to replace it I drove the the 718S and it was like they’d ripped its soul out with the turbo engines…so I bought a 981 GTS. Very similar in terms of driver satisfaction but less forgiving with the extra torque if you put your foot down at the wrong time on a wet day and very noticeably louder as my neighbours remind me…significantly louder than a 992 too. I also found out that there’s nothing between them and a 991 S 911 performance wise!
10 years of 981 ownership and I still prefer them to anything else I’ve driven in the real world
That’s a hell of an endorsement, JB! Yes, I think the only car I’d sell it for is the GTS, too. 100k miles is very reassuring. I’ve only clocked half that so far. Thanks for dropping by. 👍

I’m bought a 124 Spider couple years ago (42m) and have always lusted after a Porsche. After having a lightweight convertible that you can throw around and rev through the gears, I learned it’s not all about 0-60mph. My Audi A4 and wife’s Q5 are both faster, but on a sunny day they don’t compare in smiles per hour. I think I would be perfectly happy with a 718 and have it paid off like my other cars. Sports cars are a lot more fun if you know you can afford to replace it with a check! Glad to know I’m on the right track and a Porsche might be a car I own in my 50s. Thanks for the great video!
You’re definitely on the right track, mate. It’s about as close to perfection - as a driver’s car - as you can get. I’ve driven 100s of cars, and for driving pleasure, this is up there with the original NSX, my modified ND MX5, and of course, the 911.
Completely agree. Picked up my Boxter 981S in Sydney last month, drove up Thunderbolts and then down Armidale Road, incredible how planted it was. The mid engine delivers the perfect balance, put it into super sport and its responsiveness is absolutely sharp. Lower the PASM suspension and it's like driving on rails! Pushed it 60% up Thunderbolts, then 70% down Armidale, didn't feel the need to push it any further, couldn't get the grin off my face.
I know that feeling! Good for you!
Really enjoyed this story. I'm 33, long time car enthusiast and new to photography (at least with a proper camera). Feels like I'm just starting to let go of certain life expectations and instead looking to enjoy what I can in the moment... So lots of things to resonate with here!
I dream of owning an air cooled 911 or a GT3, but I also know how stressful those would be to merge with traffic, and for the GT3 I would not be able to reasonably use half the power on the street. Considering that and the price tags, I'm content with my old car with just enough character, and no big screens!
Thank you, Sean, for this wonderful comment. One way to increase performance is to raise expectations. But lowering them (or at least, tempering them), can increase happiness. I look at all these ‘10-X-ers’, and they never look happy or content; always anxious and hungry for more. Always chasing the next thing, and the next thing. I know, because I was like that for decades. These days, I choose to be a ‘happy striver’ who’s no longer in a rush.
@@peterfritzphoto Absolutely, the chase never ends, I even read the anticipation of new toys or better jobs is more fulfilling than when we actually achieve those goals... There's probably some balance to it. But I agree, adjusting expectations and questioning what you might be content with seems to beat going along with the crowd!
I’m glad I discovered your videos. I’m older than you but have come to a lot of the same conclusions about life and cars. I sold an S2000 and a VW GTI Autobahn for my 718 Boxster. And, although I agree the 981 flat 6’s are a screaming deal, don’t shortchange the turbo 4 718’s- they are remarkable machines with great performance and amazing gas mileage. They do sound different but Porsche has engineered a wonderful soundtrack for these vehicles. The majority of people who complain about the sound don’t even own a Porsche. I can honestly say I’d be happy with either a 981 or a 982 (and I am). Keep up the great videos.
Thanks, Bob. I love turbo cars - indeed, one of my favourite was my ‘97 MKIV Supra. We’ll probably all be driving electric cars within a decade, including the next Boxster and Cayman, so I really must try the 718 - I imagine that engine would be fabulous. 👍

Thank you for posting. That last part hit home. I’m 45 and cars have always been my passion but I am too “rational” to ever take the plunge. I loved my NC MX-5 and and thinking of an ND2, but a part of me has always wanted a 981 and you’re words (and the fact prices are starting to come back down) have really got me thinking. My only negative of the 981 S I drove was the gearing in the manual was so long, especially compared with the MX-5… but it’s still no Porche. 😊
That’s very nice of you, David - thank you. You’re right, the manual’s gearing is way too tall. I reckon the PDK is too tall, as well, but it’s still bloody awesome. Live while you’re alive; there are no gold stars at the end.

Hi Peter! I came to your site as it was on my recommended list of TH-cam videos, This was very fortunate for me. Your candid, articulate thoughtful communication delivery resonates with myself. I am a 991.1 2014 C4S owner who is completely devoted to the Porsche brand. My love affair began as a 11 year old in 1972 (I followed my military father on a 4 year posting to what was called West Germany at the time) when I saw my first Carrera Targa on original Fuchs rims on the Autobahn. Then in early 1974 my mind was utterly blown away when I saw the venerable 1973 Carrera RS up close! The ethereal sounds emanating from the flat 6 (Mine is the last naturally aspirated series except for the GT cars as you know) is like no other make in this universe. These are very special cars indeed. Your vehicle is beautiful and while I can certainly see the argument for owning a specific model Boxter or a Cayman based on looks and performance,, the 911 is where my heart is. You are now officially in my Top tier of TH-cam presenters alongside Harry from Harry's Garage and Joe Achilles. Well Done Sir! This is extremely generous of you, Les. My affection for the 911 will likely never fade, and one will probably find its way into my garage one day. Strangely, my earliest memory of a Porsche is the 928. Next came the 944, and then the 968. It was years before I first noticed - much less liked - the 911. Then I drove a 930, and then a 964, and my compass shifted. Thank you for taking the time to write - I’m very grateful.
I do have a 911 S, Covertible but I sure would prefer the engine was in the middle of the car than in the boot. I just love the 911 look but the more recent Boxsters are right up there now with the 911 look. Thanks for video.
Thanks, Harley. I’ve debated this with myself for years. I LOVE the look of the 911 - it’s proportions are absolutely perfect. But after another 300 km drive through the mountains on Sunday, I remain enthralled with the Boxster’s handling prowess. It just brilliant. Thanks for dropping by, and for taking the time to write.

The coolest thing about this video is I can sense your passion. The worst part is justification of the price. It’s a great car. For me, I have a 2008 Corvette Z06. I feel the same way about my car as you do your Boxster. You could about swap “C6 Z06” every time you say “Boxster” in this video.
I bought my 2015 Boxster S 5 yrs ago. I love it every summer. Wish I lived somewhere that I could drive it year around.
Me too. It's bloody cold and wet here for about a third of the year.
Man, this video popped up in my suggestions and I felt a little bid bad about "splurging" on an old BMW Z3 in hopes of restoring it (was my 45th birthday present). Your comments really made me feel I did the right choice, after all I also worked my ass off to be where I am and yes, life keeps getting shorter as you age, thanks for such great inspiration and motivation to live life to the fullest!
Thanks, Tony. Yep - life is bloody short!
I have a 944 that I love. A Boxster would be next. Except for a few models of the 911 they don’t thrill me as much. I have had wickedly fast cars, Mustangs, Corvettes, and more. But even though my 944 is slow it’s a fun drive on the backroads. I’m sure that’s your feeling in the Boxster. Some cars just give you that pleasure beyond the stats. Enjoy!
That’s exactly right. And that’s how I felt when I drove the 944, and later, the 968. They were brilliantly precise, analogue driving machines, which are a lot more rewarding than wrestling with a missile.
I've been told many years ago that you are selling the mystique of a Porsche. And it is for sure accurate. Today, everybody wants a 911. Sadly, only doctors, lawyers and such can afford them. I was offered a trade for a Boxster on my 2000 BMW 528i. I didn't do the trade because of the IMS bearing issues and later traded the BMW for a C4 Corvette. Original and numbers matching and too much fun to drive. A few tweaks and a lot more torque was added. I love my Corvette and parts are available at any AutoZone because it's a CHEVY.......
No mystique. The 911, Cayman, and Boxster are revered for good reason. I’ve driven hundreds of cars. I used to work a car magazine. I buy cars based on what they deliver, not ‘mystique’. And few cars deliver the handling, steering, and build quality of a Porsche sports car. That needn’t detract from your Vette, though. Enjoy - life is short! 👍
I had a 2008 manual 987s for a few years… 2 year service intervals and super kind on tyres. Servicing averaged £400/year. I only sold it because I had nowhere dry to overwinter it. Bought it for £17.5k & sold it for £15k 4 years later. A bargain… fabulous car for UK roads.
That must be quite a faff each year in the UK. That said, we’re just days away from Spring here in Australia, and it’s 2.5 degrees Celsius (feels like -3.7) this morning… The weather has gone nuts. Thanks for dropping by. 👍🦘
Absolutely agree on the touch screens which every car maker is fitting in. I like the old feel, push/press buttons, also makes for lesser maintainance.
Seriously good review and comparization, even for a 911 owner 😉👍🏻
Edited when watching the last 2 minutes.
Man, I love, no, I support you 1000% on the advice you give on pursuing your passions! I bought my 911 after being locked up (read: married and experiencing bad relations) for more than 25 years. Finally I decided to live my life and follow my passions. And since that day, and even more, since every ride in the 911, I know life can be beautifull. Every ride begins and ends with a smile on my face and joy in my heart.
Love the last 2 minutes! They really meant something to me.
Cheers!
Thank you very much, mate. I'm so glad you enjoyed my little video, and that you took the time to offer a snippet of your Porsche - and life - experience! All the best to you.
