    Regarding your comments about the interior: I’m driving a 992 and I do miss the old, “cluttered” interior a lot. I just hate how they bury functions within the touch system that took a fraction of a second to find once you got used to it. Reducing physical buttons is step in the wrong direction imo.

      I agree. Although I am not fortunate to own a Porsche, when I compare my new Audi to the 2017 q7, I miss the knobs and direct push controls that get you to exactly where you want to be. The new screen makes me take unnecessary jump through extra hoops steps.

    • @rebc123

      I think that, other than price, is one of the reasons I went to a used 991.2 instead of a 992. The 991.2 has the nice balance on the interior between the more traditional layout with good useful tech. Also, the 992 wasn't available in a manual when I found my 991.2. I agree with you on the interior though. The Boxster/Cayman models have retained the more traditional layout with discrete buttons for discrete functions, something the 991.2 tends to keep as well.

It might even be for the whole 982 generation and all markets, not quite sure. (Originally the pure electric follow up was due to be released in 2024 which has been delayed due to the developments in the last few years. However, new regulatory requirements and possibly production planing challenges could mean that there will simply be a gap.) You better head to your next Porsche dealer and get clarification.

      Be careful what you wish for. For years people have asked for Boxster/Cayman trims that approach (or exceed) 911 capability. Now that they are here, is it a surprise the prices also approach 911 levels? If you don't want to spend ~100k, buy a base Cayman, it is a wonderful car. Still too high? The return of the flat 6 engines is bound to depress prices of 2014-2016 981 series cars, and a 3.4 liter Cayman S is a 99% ideal sports car.

I drove 981 boxster(pdk) and 2.0 supra(fully specd) back to back and the supra is a bit more fun just for the more shifting to do on narrow mountain roads. On the Boxster there are corners, where the gears just dont fit and you are falling to low in RPM.

    I didn't drive GTS 4.0 yet, but I suspect its long 2nd-gear may not really be a problem.
    You can always short-shift, and as a result use 3 or 4 gears, even in city driving. I do it all the time in my turbo Bimmer.
    Sure, the car will be a little sluggish because it lacks flat torque curve of a turbo, but to rectify this you can downshift in a lightning-quick fashion, courtesy of automatic rev-matching.
    In fact I believe that auto rev-matching is more useful in this car than in turbo ones, because it complements its high-revying, linear-torque, engine better.

    Nice review. I agree with everything you said except the complaints about the gearing, which is perfect the way it is for the roads I drive every day. Very drivable around town without the need to rev it to 8k every start (I have the GT4) but also a joy to run through the gears to a high speed when appropriate. The longer gears also minimize the frequency of shifting to get to a high speed, which makes for a smoother, quicker run to a high speed. The gearing is also great for the track and through twistie canyon roads. My advice, if you're not going to drive this car fast in a way that makes the gearing a joy to behold, buy something else. I look forward to your GT4 and GT3 reviews. Thanks for your great work!

      And there was markup on the S2K initially. I bought one of the first ones and searched high and low and couldn’t find one for under $5,000 over MSRP. If you kept it long enough I suppose it was worth it, but unfortunately other than its peaky 9,000RPM redline and rigid x-bone frame, I think it was a fairly unremarkable car. Electric steering was numb, handling was surprisingly twitchy, and 150lb ft of torque at its peak was annoying. I traded for an Elise when they came out a few years later (and a Boxster Spyder after that) both of which I enjoyed far more and having spent time in a ND2 Miata recently I would choose that car over paying up for a used S2K even realizing that the Honda will maintain its value far better from this point on.

    • @johnlee5307
      @johnlee5307 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are not doing it to yourself, but instead doing it for yourself. This is the best every day true sports car in the world, let alone within the Porsche line up. The opentop adds to the whole experience and in the real world you will not see any performance difference from the Cayman. Driving in a cool summer night with the top down and going through the gears, listening to that NA music right behind your ears is a religious experience that heals the soul everytime, whether your driving in the open roads or just through town. I will never sell my 981 GTS as I've already promised it to my adult son after he has the space and means to own and maintain it, and I will most likely get another 718 GTS 4.0 in a couple years for a CPO at a more reasonable price. These almost never come on the used marketplace after 2nd owner gets it at the 2 or 3 year lease return or trade ins from the people that buy porsche sports cars for the image. There are a lot more used GT4s and GT3's than 981 GTS and the same will hold for the 718 4.0s. They are forever cars, the last ICE car to own before the EVs take over the world. The 991 and 992 are GT cars now and don't give you the same sensation as these. They are too big and too refined that you have to go at extralegal speeds to get the same sensation as the older 911's and the Boxster/Caymans with the NA flat 6. Savagegeese is right, I used this as my primary and put on 25K miles in a year and a half without any issues as far as comfort or livablility, but now I am using it as my weekend car instead as it's too special to waste on a daily commute through traffic and on congested hwys. Got a Mini SE BEV for a commuter thats cheap with the tax deducation, free charging at work, no maintenance cost and super low insurance that makes it the same as the loss of depreciation and routine maintenance cost to operate a Porsche as daily. I don't care how fast an BEV is whether it be a Taycan turbo S or a Tesla S plaid, it will never give you the sensation you get in this car.
