  • Petrol head spends 7 days with a high mileage tesla model s 85.
With the current rising fuel prices, petrol and diesel have become mega expensive meaning more and more people are turning to electric as an option to commute. In this video I explore what it’s like to daily drive a high mileage Tesla Model S

Press the boot button twice when it’s open and it will close it,for you too. Also, set the comfort access to on, and you don’t have to press any buttons. Just walk up to the car and the handles will present themselves.
If you owned the car, you wouldn’t go out of your way to charge it. You charge over night at home.

Battery life is often over 250 k and up to 400k miles in some examples used as taxis. As long as the motor is quiet without excess whirring noise - it's fine. Test drive essential as service history cannot be acquired from Tesla.

That didt cost a £1 to charge thats the connection fee, you were charged at 0.39p per KW you will get a bill. My model long range costs about £15 at rapid charger (average) and about £9 home charge per charge. VW sponsor pod point/tesco you can charge any car there. Battery degradation is different on all make but 6% in the 1st year is not uncommon after that it will slow to 1-2% per year hope that helps. Oh comparing a Tesla 85 to any modern EV is like saying my M2 comp does everything better then my Dacia sanero :P

    • @bluebikerathar
      @bluebikerathar 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Kwh is the capacity . kW is the power. An engine has 100kW but the gas tank has 50litre or gallon. You dont say the gas tank has 50kW. No, when talking about battery = Kwh ( capacity) and the power is kW. ( charging rate or motor).

Really good balanced video. I’m getting an EV later this year (not a Tesla - too expensive) as a company car but can honestly say I wouldn’t get one as a private buyer yet, even a used one. I’m lucky I will have free charging at work (once a week) so 99% of the time will not need to use public chargers - just on the occasional longer journey a few times a year. I appreciate they don’t make sense yet for a lot of people but this will change over time as range increases, costs come down and charging infrastructure improves. A few years away until they overtake (excuse the pun!) ICE vehicles but having test-driven a few and spoken to many EV owners, I think the vast majority of people will love their EV’s.

Travel sickness is due to mismatch between motion inputs from your inner ear and vision, modified by your brains anticipation and expectation of motion. Worst in back seat (you can’t see what is happening as well), front passenger seat better (vision better match for motion) best when driving yourself (brain has better idea of what happens next cos your in control and therefore anticipation of motion accurately matches inner ear measurement).

Natural to have a little learning curve but they’re quite quick to get used too.

I came across your channel for the first time as we are considering an EV and live near Milton Keynes so your comments on charging were especially relevant to us.
BUT :) I'm not convinced that it only cost £1 to charge (happily be proved wrong). If you fill a petrol/diesel car up at tesco using the pay at pump option it takes a £1 charge to validate your card - the remainder of the balance appears in (or out!) Of your bank a day or so later.

Loved the review. Personally I’m on my 2nd hybrid, first was a Toyota Prius (an intro to hybrid) and then the Ford Fusion Hybrid which I F’N love! That thing is solid, fast and just 🥰 But I wouldn’t mind getting an all electric especially with Lucid and Polaris entering the market but dude you need a home charging station and you definitely can’t take long distant trips cause the issue you had finding a station is crazy. Here in the suburban area of NYC where I live, ppl have multiple cars and houses so you can switch up, electric local, gas for distance/power. But good to know that the old/high mileage Tesla holds up. Shit that thing is 8yrs old.

No vibration or engine whine. It'll beat most ICE vehicles in the quarter mile without waking the wolves. And, Tesla charging stations are so good and so common that I can't imagine long distance travel in any other EV. Definitely digging the Tesla Experience.

Calvin, thanks for this great video! A used Tesla model S is a great option for anyone wanting to get into the Electric car space. Any petrolhead knows of the Model S and its performance potential vs a proper ICE car, but minus the sweet sound of a good exhaust. Losing this sound is what scares a petrolhead the most. Your point of view on this, Calvin, is shared by all the proper petrolheads! Your simple video format of living with the car, is what we appreciated seeing and look at what happened? Charge time slowed you down, when you had things to do. We needed to see that, I needed to see that, as I consider maybe selling my 2011 E350, perhaps not just yet! Driving along with 120dB inside will make you appear like a super extreme weirdo (to pedestrians) but at least you can get that 'ears bleeding' experience. Honestly they can go well into permanent hearing damage territory but many petrolheads will see that as a price worth paying.

Big issue is charging like with the time it takes to find a working or suitable charging station and then the Time to Charge. It’s ok if you commute in the range of the battery or have the free time waiting. The other issue I personally buy secondhand cars and the recommended battery life is around 8Y and batteries on decent evs tend to cost more than the car is worth at that stage of life or at best well over half the value. Witch I can see this corsing issues with the second hand market where the average road user buys. Openly emit I am not a Fan of EVS but they are suitable to those who like or afford them and have the luxury of free time.

Very thoughtful video Calvin. I have a fast petrol BMW and love the camaraderie between fellow petrol heads. You can be supping a brew at your local Starbucks chatting to young lads and old farts alike about their cars. Can’t see that happening with EV.

As someone in the US, there's literally no inconvenience when it comes to having EVs here, unless you're driving 300+ miles a day in road trips or something. And knowing how the majority of driving trips aren't even close to that, range anxiety literally can't happen with nearly anyone.
We're littered with single-family housing with zoning laws literally everywhere making it illegal to not have massive driveways for no reason, garage obviously included, everyone can just get a charger in their house, which can literally just be a Level 1 charger for most trips, plug in your EV at night, and still have full batteries every day. You don't even need chargers at your workplace, unless you have a Nissan Leaf and cross state lines to get to work.

@noorquacker please stop speaking for "everyone and everywhere in the US", as you shouldn't speak in absolutes about anything, let alone an issue as diverse as this. Not everyone has anywhere near the same situations to deal with whether rural areas, cold environments, long rides for work or pleasure, etc. There are pros and cons to everything and EVs are no different. You wouldn't like it if people came along dismissing your circumstances or challenges.

Good video but really misses a fundamental benefit of running an EV.
If you're able to home charge then you'll hardly ever have to wait for the car to charge as you'll wake up to a full battery every day.
Sure there will be someone out there that drives hundreds of miles every day but for most people, a 200 mile range is more than ample. After all, 12,000 miles per year is 230 miles per week, not per day.
And when you do drive a long way, you'll only need to charge after driving about 3 1/2 hours.
After that, 35 minutes at a Tesla Supercharger will give you another 3+ hours of driving.

I'm glad you liked the Tesla. I used to call myself a petrol head but I think I'm just a car nut. I'm on my second electric car (neither are Teslas unfortunately, maybe one day?) and wouldn't go back. I don't miss the noise, but you made me realise that I did used to enjoy snicking through a nice gearbox. I also used to suffer from car sickness. It sounds like you are just the same as I was. If I kept my eyes on the road, I was fine. So, in the back, this was more difficult and so you and I suffered more. In the passenger seat it is easier to do, if you realise that it will help, and when driving, you have to do it so no problem. The re-gen braking? I love it, I want true 'one pedal driving' cars. My Zoe wasn't and my current car is closer but not quite. If the drive is jerky, it's the driver, not the re-generative braking. It's no different to lifting off the throttle on an ICE car and applying the brakes. It can be done smoothly or not smoothly. Great video, I'll be looking out for more.

I’ve lived with a lower range EV (BMW i3) for two years without a garage. In those two years I was always thinking about where my next charging opportunity was going to come from.
I now have a garage so I can charge overnight and the experience is night and day. I wake up with a full battery and give it no thought.
With the infrastructure being what it is, as much as I love EVs, I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone who doesn’t have access to off street parking. But if you can charge it at night then I think that they are brilliant.

Cal, incredible content once again. The mrs and I have been discussing the concept of a Tesla. We've got a couple of new cars and an rx8 (my midlife crisis car apparently that I've owned for a few yrs and shovelled a few grand into) up until last week where I blew the engine, needless to say she's left the driveway now. I've been looking at a Q7 as I like the fact it's the tankiest car out there but having seen this vid am really quite intrigued as to what Tesla have to offer. I know they do a 7 seater too.
Keep up the great content (p.s. The mrs isn't winning, I'm lining up a C63 as my new weekend car!)
Side note - Have you got a Q7 or anything 7 seater based in stock as I got the kids a puppy for Christmas and it'd be awesome to have a larger SUV to accommodate the famalam

The older cars have totally different battery chemistry than the MODEL 3 and MODEL Y. The rule on range is to make sure with an older MODEL S you have twice the distance left than where you are going as this covers variables such as weather and driving style IE how heavy your right foot is.

No word of a lie, he had a large army spec Jerry can filled with petrol always stored behind the drivers seat so he could top up.!
To be fair he was doing 20-30k per annum, by contrast maybe one of these used merely as a shopping cart / school run mobile, it may make more sense…..
