@Skylon Moss It's not like anyone was fighting anyone easy to deal with. Yang and Ruby were fighting Emerald and Mercury. It doesn't matter how much fighting skill they have, Emeralds semblance is broken af. Not saying she's unbeatable, but don't downplay her. Ren and Nora were dealing with Hazel. Jaune decided to fight Cinder for some reason. Now we've only seen Vernal fight once. Is it that hard to believe that she's a better fighter than Weiss?
Weiss has ice glyphs, and fire glyphs, and an omnislash-like attack powered by glyphs and a time dilation glyph. She had numerous approaches she could've taken instead of summoning. She had easier summons like that boarbatusk she could do in like two seconds. Let's say Vernal just so happened to be that skilled, at least Weiss' loss would've been acceptable if we see her do anything else besides summoning. During Cinder, Em and Merc's fight we see that it was truly a test of skill because we see Amber throw out so much from her maiden arsenal. Weiss did stupid things she wouldn't normally do (like summoning without cover) which is why it seemed like she was dumbed down so that she could lose and become a convenient catalyst for the unlocking of Jaune's semblance
I didn't really like how Whitley was handled. I mean Winter had the military, Weiss had Beacon, but Whitley was stuck with his father the entire time. Heck, he didn't even have his siblings during vol 1-3. I was expecting a big reveal where Whitley was planning on getting Weiss disowned by Jacques to take over the company, only to help her leave along with Klein. He would have been an actually good example of someone being manipulative and deceptive for the benefit of others as well as himself. I wouldn't want him to be best buds with Weiss necessarily, but I just hoped that they would come to some kind of mutual understanding. "Why are you helping me? You hate me." "I don't hate you, Weiss. I envy you. While you were at parties, I was at board meetings. While you were training with Winter, I was being tested on corporate management. You always had something other than this. All I have is the company and it *will* be mine. Not yours. Not father's. Mine. Besides, this will let you be a huntress full-time." "And how do I know you won't just continue father's practices? You seemed to have learned everything else he taught you." "I'll change things because unlike him, I don't *need* pseudo-enslavement to keep the SDC out of the red." "(Sighs) Alright Whitley. I guess this is goodbye. Nicholas Fallbrook Sounds much more better and less generic than the “deceptive brother seizing the throne” that Whitley pretty much was despite not being a literal throne.
The problem with this is it wouldn't have fit with his character. It would have been a completely random 360. Earlier on, Weiss asked Whitley in a one on one, no one else around to hear them, if he was jealous of her, and if that was why he was being so manipulative, and he flat out rejected that notion, saying he found her and Winter's combat prowess to be, and I quote, "barbaric", saying that it was "beneathe people like [Whitley and Jacques]". Having him then turn around and admit to simply being envious of Weiss would be completely out of character for him, especially while having him actually help Weiss, which is another completely out of character thing for him to do. Now, during that one on one exchange between him and Wiess where he called her and Winter barbaric, if, instead of having him answer the question, the writers simply had him smirk, or just not react at all, then this idea would make more sense for him. But the way he's been written as is, Whitley doesn't care at all about the SDC, or his family. He only wants the power and authority being head of the SDC would give him. If given the chance, Whitley would be even worse than Jacques.
Jeremy Daugherty in this comment that @nicholas fallbrook wrote Whitley is envious of Weiss and Winter's freedom from the SDC, not her fighting, and even if he was, Whitley insulting Weiss's fighting and then saying he is envious later on is not out character just because he is seemingly contradicting himself. He could just have been hiding his envy behind insults, people put down things they can't have all the time. Also @nicholas fallbrook's comment states that Whitley is doing this to benefit himself and his sister who he secretly cares for. This is a fan's own take on how they wanted Whitley to be like, so whatever way his character is portrayed in canon doesn't apply here, so you can't just say it doesn't work or it's out of character because of things from canon
I know right, Ruby was my favorite character when i started watching... hell, she was like the reason i started watching the show. Ruby got soo far pushed my favorite character list is sadding... all because rooster decided to to develop her properly... Hell, my fav characters fighting for number 1 spot now is Weiss, Yang, Qrow and Raven... Pls make this season 6 be better at developing the characters.
This show needs to work on it's character development. A girl who has spent a season locked away in her bedroom and was originally racist has more development than a character who got her arm chopped off
At least Yang got a reasonable character development... Not close to Weiss but at least she did, Ruby haven't got shit and she's supposely the protagonist...

@@loiiysailor1177 speaking of fanfics, I wonder if any good writer has ever gone threw with the idea of ACTUALLY rewriting volumes 4 and 5, I mean, even just taking ideas from this very comment section the story would already improve a lot. it is also a lot easier to write a good story when you can pick and choose the actual good ideas from the current show so it seems like it wouldn't be too difficult to come out with a really interesting and good result

Weiss has always been my favourite character, the white trailer made me fall in love with her fighting style. I could already tell she was going to have development afterwards, and tbh watching Blake in V4 was worse than Weiss in V1 imo. She may not be perfect, but no hero is supposed to be perfect. I blame V4/V5 writing to making everyone stupid for the sake of the plot. Still best girl though, considering they screwed her up the least.
I love her too, but the problem is she loses *every* single fight she has against a *person* during a 1v1. They really need to stop making Weiss to be the weakest huntress. I'm tired of seeing best girl beaten over and over.
She's definitely had the most character development so far out of Team RWBy (imo). My favorite kind of character development is when someone mean and rude becomes more open and kind to the people around them.
I think Blake technically has more development, it's just that it sucks. I still can't for the life of me get over the part where Cinder walks right past an unconscious Ruby, whom she has a grudge with and easily could've stabbed in the head, in favor of just possibly killing Weiss, whom she has no relation to. It's not like killing Ruby would've been any less effective at getting a rise out of Jaune, which for whatever reason seemed to be her only goal until she actually decided to head down to the vault.

Yeah because 12-14 episodes of a less than half hour per minute show in an entire YEAR'S worth of time is apparently "rushed". OK DUDE. WHAT THE FUCK EVER. I mean i wouldn't say she has *good* character development. But it is something. Its league's better than Blakes BORING story arc. Out of team rwby she has the best character development.
I adore Weiss. Just like you, she has been my favorite character since the begging, and that will not change. Love all her character development, love her design, love her fighting style, love her. On a not unrelated note, the moment she impaled was the WORST moment in the series by far, pretty much the crowning example of empty dramatic tension right there. Ok, I just saw the whole video and despite the fact that I love her intensely, it was obvious that Weiss was far from being perfect. But I still like her good aspects and overall development. I also feel the negative points were done mostly because of bad writing. Overall, she's still a decent/acceptable character in my book, so that's good. Ps: I'm with you. Winter is currently my favorite character and I dunno how would I feel if they screw her up big time.

I think unicorn of war said it best in his recent vid on rwby vol 1-5, Weiss' development and depth might not have been all that great in the beginning but it was cohesive. She wasnt stagnate as sliced bread like ruby. They didnt slap on a bunch of shit to her character like Blake. And unlike Yang, shit actually came from the things she have gone through that didnt make me wanna pull my hair out.

Weiss should've stumbled overcoming her racism. It also felt like there was some kind confrontation incoming with her and her father, but then she was just like, "Later, bye!" She leaves her house and the manor without anyone trying to stop her. Also, remember in Volume 1 when Weiss told Blake that the next time something happened to go to her team and not run? Well, Blake didn't... Why wasn't she as pissed as Yang?! She's been humbled by her friends, but she's still the Ice Queen. She should've been mad at Blake for leaving Yang when she needed her help in her recovery. Weiss didn't have a choice to when it came to leaving, but Blake did! Also, Blake, having been in a violent organization, should've stumbled when it comes to dropping her White Fang ways. Just because she was against being violent, doesn't mean she should've stopped hating, or at least having a hard time getting along with humans, at first. Haven't watched Volume 6 yet, because I'm not a First Member, but I'm dreading it, because it feels that Weiss and Ruby have already forgotten what happened with the whole Blake leaving them, fiasco.
Those two forgave and forgot about Blake back in Volume 5 episode 8 because...I honestly don't know. The writers never show us why or when they did so with regard to Blake running away back in volume 3.
But why? She was never really that racist. She hated the White Fang, a terrorist group. She was describing Sun as a criminal at the beginning because all they knew about him when they met him was that he broke the law. She was never shown hating faunus. People claiming she was some huge racist just didn't pay attention to what happened in the story.
@@randumo24 she literally said that Sun was eventually going to join the white fang! Her hatred of the white fang extended to all faunus. And while faunus discrimination was atrociously un-portrayed because Miles and Kerry are failures that doesn't mean we, the viewers, weren't supposed to connect the dots with Weiss's initial depiction of being a bigot.

The only reasonable explanation I can come up with (which I am going for in my fanfic) is that her plan was to attempt to achieve some kind of folk hero status through her efforts as a Huntress. She wants to essentially become famous and well-known as a champion who fights on behalf of "the people". Basically, she is a good person, and is taking steps to prove that to the world. So that when she returns to Atlas to assume control of the company by saying, "Guys... my father is an asshole, and I'm going to change things for the better", people will believe her, and support her. Of course, a plan like this would also require Miles and Kerry to establish that Hunters and Huntresses frequently _attain_ such a status, instead of also being widely known as a group comprised of mercenaries and brigands that are only out for themselves and AUUUUUGHHH THEY FRUSTRATE ME SO MUCH!!!! >:(

Your absolutely right. It was easy to see Weiss grow as a character in the future from the beginning of the series. Right away, she was my favorite character because of her design and weapon choice-it a hunch but I knew she was going to be a great character to see later on. Especially when a rude/emotionless/stubborn character is around others who are loose and kind-you know their gonna start changing. Friendship. Powerful stuff. Great video! Keep up the great work.

Honestly....I *HATED* Weiss in RWBY volumes 1 & 2, but Weiss got some awesome development in RWBY to the point where now, she's one of my favorite characters.
18:06 Yeah you’re right, that was a double standard. Weiss’s dad hitting her is bad and a sign he’s an abusive father, Blake hitting Sun is a okay and is for humor. I theorize when they delve into Blake and Adam’s past abusive relationship and reveal he hit her they’ll treat him as abusive like they should but they’ll also conveniently ignore that Blake her Sun a lot and never call her out for that.
I always love your critique of RWBY so much. It's really obvious that you go out of your way to take a step back and critically think about things from an honest, unbiased standpoint. The writers definitely made some awful decisions when it came to Weiss, and I think the worst was the fact that Jaune got to see Weiss get stabbed by Cinder but not...Ruby, her partner, the one who saw Pyrrha die. Jaune never even saw that happen to Pyrrha so I don't understand why he was the one to watch? It would have been a perfect moment to give Ruby some serious development, having her flip her absolute shit when she sees her own partner, her best friend from Beacon (besides Yang obviously), almost die in the same way Pyrrha did. You don't watch someone die in front of you and come out emotionally unscathed and it would have been a great time to give Ruby some development by having her break down with some foreshadowing over the course of volume 5, hints to show that she's not totally alright. Hell, it would've been nice if Ruby had some PTSD-ness as well and she could have had some sort of traumatic "flashback" when she watches her own partner get an injury just like Pyrrha's. You know, the girl she watched die with her own two eyes? Jaune watching Weiss die was pointless compared to the emotional impact it could have had on Ruby if she wasn't knocked out. I'm just pissed that she was used as a tool for Jaune's """development""" and semblance reveal instead.
Stefi To me Ruby is the one who should’ve been impaled by Cinder, it simply makes more sense, Cinder had a grudge against Ruby and had Leo invite the heroes over all so she can get at Ruby so it makes sense for her to try to kill Ruby, Jaune has been traveling with Ruby and has more of a relationship with her than he does with Weiss so the emotional impact should hit him harder and Ruby was knocked out and was literally a few feet away from Cinder so everything should’ve ended with Ruby being impaled. It makes more sense and gives closure to that “Cinder wants to kill Ruby” thing that was forgotten because we needed Cinder to be focused on Jaune for no reason.
Let's see who is the most tolerable member of team RWBY... Ruby: A flat character who stated that she had character development so the audience would stop complaining... Blake: A pretentious SJW who has all the signs of a victim complex, which was completely unintended by Miles and Kerry... Yang: The character with the most absurd (and rushed) 'character development arc' in RWBY... Weiss: Aside from her lack of common sense in the Battle of Haven (courtesy of Miles and Kerry), the one character who ACTUALLY LEARNED SOMETHING FROM HER CHARACTER ARC. I also think that Weiss is the best member of Team RWBY, both because of her steady growth over the story, and her fairly consistent characterization.

Yo, you missed the part where we've seen Weiss flinch when someone raises their voice in anger. In Volume 4, when she's sneaking out, when Ironwood angrily yells "Jacques!", she flinches. Then, in Volume 5, when Yang raises her voice at Raven ("Don't you _dare_ talk about my family that way!"), Weiss flinches away from Yang. This is a clear effect from her upbringing with Jacques, who has a tendency to lose his temper. When he's angry, he yells, and when his anger peaks... well, the second time he argued with Ironwood, we heard glass breaking, followed by Ironwood telling Jacques to get a hold of himself. I think when Jacques gets too pissed off, he throws things, breaks things, hits things, but I think striking his children may be uncommon, hence Weiss' surprise. She probably expected him to take it out on an inanimate object, not on her. Also, Weiss' goal to become a Huntress is connected with her grandfather, Nicholas Schnee. Nicholas had combat training, and he led expeditions to find Dust mines. This meant he knew what it's like out in the field because he didn't spend all his time sitting behind a desk. Like Qrow said in the World of Remnant episode, people respected that Nicholas was the kind of man who would stick his neck out for them. Weiss intends to follow in Nicholas' footsteps to restore respect to the Schnee name. And honestly, since Jacques is in charge of the company, there was nothing Weiss could do about how the company is operated until she took over, but now she's not heiress anymore, so that part of the plan is out.
Okay I won’t lie , I started to love Weiss around season 3, plus i will admit she’s the most developed And mature . She ended up becoming my favorite slowly and I will always love her. Especially with the song , This life is mine . It basically tells the story , and I love the tone it sets at first. It became my favorite song and I think one of the most telling in all of Rwby.

Jennifer lopez Yeah every character kinda gotten screwed over in Volume 5, though that was partially because of already existing problems getting worse and more noticeable but despite Volume 5 and the battle of Haven turning her stupid she’s still the best main character.

I wish more people spoke about the significance of music in RWBY because I think Weiss's music is the absolute best. Not only does it show her transition reflected in the show but for me personally the lyrics are so powerful and empowering
RWBY has had its share of mistakes. Most of the major ones between season 4-5. But even with all of its blunders it still has a soft spot in my heart. I really hope season 6 is able to be better than the last 2 seasons. :/
I’m really glad someone else noticed how bullshit it was for Weiss’ racism to be swept under the rug without it being acknowledged ever again, especially considering that she never even apologized for her shitty behavior. There’s still a ton of people who hate her solely for that reason and honestly I don’t blame them. My biggest fear for Weiss going into the Atlas arc is that the show will become over saturated with her so to speak. She already got some of the best development in the show and we’re already going back to her home where she will no doubt be a main focus again. It just seems like her character is getting too much focus in too short of an amount of time compared to the other members of her team. I’m praying I don’t end up feeling this way, but right now I still have no fucking idea why the writers thought going to back to Atlas was a better move than moving the story to Vacuo.
Because Vacuo is farther from Mistral than Atlas already is. Plus moving to Vacuo means both team SSSN and CFVY will be involved in the main story, since Sun lives in Vacuo while this upcoming novel this summer talks about CFVY's adventures on Vacuo which is where they went to after the Fall of Beacon. And honestly, CRWBY is already having a hard time writing RWBY and JNPR so what makes you think having CFVY and SSSN in the bunch would make it any better? Plus we've already been shown Atlas in Weiss' character arc in V4 so moving it to Atlas is a generally better move. Not to mention we already have an Ironwood yet no named Vacuo headmaster yet. By going to Atlas they also already have many possibilities to take the characters at. For one it's Weiss' homeland, it's also the land of racist fucks so that's a story point for Blake too.
Lol, for one thing, they were both being shitty. It's not one bit racist to hate the White Fang, it's a terrorist organization. Also, they showed with actions that she was no longer racist in the slightest in the Battle of Beacon when she risked her life by throwing herself between the Atlesian Mech and the injured Velvet. @@randumo24 Also, the way the writers "resolved" her racism arc was completely halfassed. Racism is a deeply ingrained attitude which can take years to correct. Instead of showing Weiss gradually unlearning her previous attitudes or even just her apologizing and acknowledging that her beliefs were wrong, the writers just made her flip a switch from being a racist bitch to not being racist without any further acknowledgement. That's not a redemption, that's just lazy writing.

Great video as always. Your channel is definitely my favorite for criticism on this show. Just wanted to mention though, in that scene in volume 1 where Weiss and Blake were confronting each other, Weiss also mentions that while she did have to deal with extra crap from her father, she also had to deal with family members being executed by the White Fang which Blake was a part of (when she was in the White Fang not part of the executions themselves). I'm not trying to justify Weiss' racism towards the faunus, racism is never a good thing, but murder and terrorism are also terrible things and if you look at it through the perspective of a rich, high status, sheltered girl, who's already having daddy issues, and personal stability being affected by a group of faunus committing terrorism, it makes sense why she had so much hate towards the faunus. Yeah the writers probably should have had Weiss apologize for her racist behavior in front of Blake at the time but I feel it also works both ways. While Blake didn't personally have a hand in those executions, she was still aware of how things were getting out of control (especially once Adam joined the picture) during her time at the White Fang. And rather than voicing her concerns for things getting out of control, or maybe even trying to change it from within (her dad was the leader at one point), she just did what she does best and ran away. In short, I can understand both sides of the argument but both have faults that need fixing. I wish there was more character growth between Weiss and Blake especially. It would have been nice to see two characters from very different backgrounds grow together, agreeing and disagreeing with how they view the world and ultimately come to understand one another. It's really such a shame. There's so many interesting concepts this show throws at the audience but their execution of these is hot garbage. Makes me sad too since I have a problem of getting my hopes up for this show. Shame on me.
The writers are stuck at a high-school level, which is why Weiss is the only good character. She's a basic high-school trope. When they have to write her as an adult, or god forbid write consistently, that's when it becomes apparent that the voice actress gives us way more than the script. A year or more has passed, since the start of the show. She's either eighteen or nineteen now. Yet, the only things, about Weiss, that have changed, are the changes mapped out by the trope of the ice queen thaws out. Like the other characters, she's not asking questions or challenging the little that she's being told. She's not growing organically, she's growing within the confines of the trope.

I recall watching a video on Terrible Writing Advice about character development and it really feels like the writers took that video seriously and all the sarcasm flew right passed their heads. The section of that video where JP talks about how amateur writers confuse "flaw scrubbing" for "character development" fits Weiss to a T, unfortunately. Sometimes it's better for flaws to be something that a character learns to work _around_ rather than remove it entirely, because having your characters constantly remove their flaws means that the writer is forced to constantly throw new ones to face. Often this leads to these "flaws" to be very arbitrary rather than something that grew organically from what was previously established about the character. To go over Weiss' "flaw scrubbing": Weiss has to learn to work well with others. She did. Weiss has to learn to not be "racist"( she wasn't racist but I'll humor the writers this time). She did. Weiss has to learn how to summon. She did. Weiss has to stop listening to her father's orders. She did. Weiss is constantly getting over some character flaw and because of this she kinda has nothing to do now. The writers _could_ focus on a flaw that has been established in the show (like her over-relying on Summoning) but they probably won't.
I’m in grade 10 and I have a story that’s on Wattpad and I have a lot of characters that has development and after I watched his video on Yang, and I have a character in my story with PTSD, I said after watching that video was “This is what you can’t do to a character with PTSD” so I am not gonna give that character the poor development that Yang has received. I looked at the other videos he made and I am trying to get my characters at least decent character development
Devin Holmes Oh I would love to see him make a Jaune video, he’s certainly a character that deserves his own video considering how they written his character. I honestly think you could remove Jaune and absolutely NOTHING of value would be lost. I honestly question why he, Ren and Nora are still here, they have nothing to do and just take away screen time from the real main characters, Jaune in particular for somehow being more of a main character than the actual main character.

Weiss is Best Girl, and you've made a great case for why, love your non bias as well. I agree on the whole 'no such thing as magic ' line is bs as what do they have to gauge magic with. But would provide a counter argument for your last point; Wiess's character regarding the faunus. I think that we have been shown that she has moved beyond it as for one the camp fire talk with Blake and yang, she addresses Blake about how she wants to run the company, perhaps she refers to how the miners are treated. That's weak I know, but this is something a little more cemented; In vol 3 Weiss runs infront of Velvet to take the hit from the Paladin, she was willing to throw herself in front of a faunus to save her, I believe that this is the way for the writers to show she has moved beyond the prejudice. Yeah, I think the writers believe that was enough but for me it wasn't. The tongue is mighty power. Weiss has never said anything about the Faunus past volume 1.
After volume 5, I don't think I'm brave enough to watch volume 6. Anyways, great job on the vid, and I can't help but agree with your thoughts (especially the bad ones ;p). While Weiss might have been one of the brighter spots of the series, for one who prided herself as an intelligent, disciplined fighter, she can't seem to help but constantly expose herself to attack or lose her weapon. Considering how much better she was in the past, this was understandably frustrating.

For me, the slap and her reaction to it was actually when she became my favorite, because the way I saw it, her reaction was testament to how much she's changed and how defiant she's become. When her father slapped her, she didn't think he'd ever go that far, so she was surprised and hurt, but when I was watching that scene I feel like in her head she quickly said "Fuck that, I'm not letting him see me cry. I'm not letting him break me." and she composed herself and continued on. I love that she didn't give him the satisfaction of reacting how most young girls would if their father just outright smacked them in the face like that. It wasn't until he left that she let her emotions come out.
Weiss was my lease favorite character when i first got into RWBY but since then she has become a character who I would honestly love to be friends with ^_^

Thank you for the awesome vid! I love the path they made Weiss walk and I can't wait to see how she acts in front of friends with her father in the room. Though I am worried on what she'll be doing while walking to their destination. Other than defending the relic from Grimm. Will she be nervous, anxious the closer they get to her home? Or will she be pumped, excited to show her father what an important role she has to save the world?
Weiss was my favorite from her trailer start actually. She came off as an introvert and her fighting style was gorgeous to look at. I'm a sucker for good musical talent. Her archetype was the most like a princess from a fairy tale and that's part of the core appeal of rwby, or it was at the time. Her design is simply the best too. In terms of actual writing in the show? She's not really tainted as badly by the bad writing compared to other characters relative to how much screentime she has. Volume 5 was bad for everyone but I enjoyed her character moment with Yang even though it would have been nice to see Ruby do it.
Both Weiss and Yang got the best character development by a country mile... I'm actually starting to ask myself who the main character is, because Ruby... out of all the characters, had the least development... AND SHES SUPPOSE TO BE THE PROTAGONIST. Hope Rooster teeth start to fix this. Exelent video btw, the points you made are perfect and i'm also one of those guys who dind't liked Weiss in the beginning because she was... well, one mean ass bitch. I'm honestly happy you didn't just look at her positives and looked at EXACTLY the right kind of negative of was hoping for: Why is Weiss a huntress if she wants to run the SDC? It's always been something I never understood about her character. Her grandfather led Exhibitions for dust, yes, you'd have to be strong to do so but then you realize how is she going to manage her company without, say, some home support(Hoping for Whitley to be a reluctant yet begrudgingly-loving little brother figure to run the SDC while Weiss does the exhibitions. I'm just hoping they DON'T ruin Whitley by making him cliche anta-brother. He's actually in a position to have really good reasons and actual representation that not all male Schnees are assholes just because.
You know, in a sick twisted way that's the reason I kinda 'liked' Blake. After showing how cowardly she was SHE had THE MOST to repent from and I was interested in seeing how she would bounce back from such a black mark on her personality. I thought her running away after Yang got her arm cut off was the lowest moment for her as she falls victim to one of her worst traits. I thought it was a genuinely horrible part of her that crippled her ability to actually be a decent friend. Therefore, shooting a deep rift between team RWBY that would last even after they get back together. By comparison she makes everyone around her look even better (like Sun Wukong) when they refuse to abandon her even though she would so easily abandon them. Having someone like Sun being her COMPLETE opposite in the situation would make her reflect (on her pattern of abandonment of her parents, Adam, the White Fang, team RWBY) and realize this is something she can't keep reasoning to herself she's better off doing; abandoning people and getting mad at them for wanting helping. Then have her realize how screwed up in the head she was for thinking that way. Which, I personally imagined, would makes for some emotional scenes and good moments. I thought THAT was setting her up for change in the same way Weiss was in the beginning of the show. Of course, I may have put a little too much faith in the writing and... yeah none of that happened the way it should have for me personally. That's just my opinion.

Very well put together. She's def' the strongest character they've got to work with, after butchering just about everyone else. The sad part, is whether or not it's just a slow, countdown, until everyone reaches the bottom.
Personally I always thought a lot of characters didn't really have a good process of mastering ability's before have the final result. I do think Weiss had enough time to develop her semblance, but from what I've seen not a lot of variety in the use of hers. I wish she learned slowly instead of just knowing how to summon completely, Like a short cut summon of the knights arm (kinda like bayanetta) and the sword instead of the whole thing or briefly summoning the boar grimm for a quick ram. Its also seems to make her forget about all the other stuff she has with her glyphs and swordplay. Kinda similar with ruby to, her red ball thing at first I thought was just a visual effect after she built up enough speed ( like during the food fight, kinda like a red bullet) but seems to just defy gravity and fly at times. It loses alot of build-up when it happens, and can't tell on how it developed. Edit: Plus if Weiss did develop her powers that way, it would of made Jaune amping her summon better because it could of summoned the full knight instead of just a arm, much more exciting.
I'm a huge fan of the idea of her brother undertaking a similar arc and maybe displaying a creative mind instead of the brute force everyone else seems to fond of.

@Skylon Moss It's not like anyone was fighting anyone easy to deal with. Yang and Ruby were fighting Emerald and Mercury. It doesn't matter how much fighting skill they have, Emeralds semblance is broken af. Not saying she's unbeatable, but don't downplay her. Ren and Nora were dealing with Hazel. Jaune decided to fight Cinder for some reason. Now we've only seen Vernal fight once. Is it that hard to believe that she's a better fighter than Weiss?
Weiss has ice glyphs, and fire glyphs, and an omnislash-like attack powered by glyphs and a time dilation glyph. She had numerous approaches she could've taken instead of summoning. She had easier summons like that boarbatusk she could do in like two seconds. Let's say Vernal just so happened to be that skilled, at least Weiss' loss would've been acceptable if we see her do anything else besides summoning. During Cinder, Em and Merc's fight we see that it was truly a test of skill because we see Amber throw out so much from her maiden arsenal. Weiss did stupid things she wouldn't normally do (like summoning without cover) which is why it seemed like she was dumbed down so that she could lose and become a convenient catalyst for the unlocking of Jaune's semblance
I didn't really like how Whitley was handled. I mean Winter had the military, Weiss had Beacon, but Whitley was stuck with his father the entire time. Heck, he didn't even have his siblings during vol 1-3. I was expecting a big reveal where Whitley was planning on getting Weiss disowned by Jacques to take over the company, only to help her leave along with Klein. He would have been an actually good example of someone being manipulative and deceptive for the benefit of others as well as himself. I wouldn't want him to be best buds with Weiss necessarily, but I just hoped that they would come to some kind of mutual understanding.

Nicholas Fallbrook Sounds much more better and less generic than the “deceptive brother seizing the throne” that Whitley pretty much was despite not being a literal throne.

The problem with this is it wouldn't have fit with his character. It would have been a completely random 360. Earlier on, Weiss asked Whitley in a one on one, no one else around to hear them, if he was jealous of her, and if that was why he was being so manipulative, and he flat out rejected that notion, saying he found her and Winter's combat prowess to be, and I quote, "barbaric", saying that it was "beneathe people like [Whitley and Jacques]". Having him then turn around and admit to simply being envious of Weiss would be completely out of character for him, especially while having him actually help Weiss, which is another completely out of character thing for him to do. Now, during that one on one exchange between him and Wiess where he called her and Winter barbaric, if, instead of having him answer the question, the writers simply had him smirk, or just not react at all, then this idea would make more sense for him. But the way he's been written as is, Whitley doesn't care at all about the SDC, or his family. He only wants the power and authority being head of the SDC would give him. If given the chance, Whitley would be even worse than Jacques.
Jeremy Daugherty in this comment that @nicholas fallbrook wrote Whitley is envious of Weiss and Winter's freedom from the SDC, not her fighting, and even if he was, Whitley insulting Weiss's fighting and then saying he is envious later on is not out character just because he is seemingly contradicting himself. He could just have been hiding his envy behind insults, people put down things they can't have all the time. Also @nicholas fallbrook's comment states that Whitley is doing this to benefit himself and his sister who he secretly cares for. This is a fan's own take on how they wanted Whitley to be like, so whatever way his character is portrayed in canon doesn't apply here, so you can't just say it doesn't work or it's out of character because of things from canon

The reason Ruby hasn't gotten much development past Volume 3 is because they have tried to make Jaune a thing. He has killed Ruby.

Weiss has always been my favourite character, the white trailer made me fall in love with her fighting style. I could already tell she was going to have development afterwards, and tbh watching Blake in V4 was worse than Weiss in V1 imo.
She may not be perfect, but no hero is supposed to be perfect. I blame V4/V5 writing to making everyone stupid for the sake of the plot. Still best girl though, considering they screwed her up the least.

I love her too, but the problem is she loses *every* single fight she has against a *person* during a 1v1. They really need to stop making Weiss to be the weakest huntress. I'm tired of seeing best girl beaten over and over.
She's definitely had the most character development so far out of Team RWBy (imo). My favorite kind of character development is when someone mean and rude becomes more open and kind to the people around them.
I think Blake technically has more development, it's just that it sucks. I still can't for the life of me get over the part where Cinder walks right past an unconscious Ruby, whom she has a grudge with and easily could've stabbed in the head, in favor of just possibly killing Weiss, whom she has no relation to. It's not like killing Ruby would've been any less effective at getting a rise out of Jaune, which for whatever reason seemed to be her only goal until she actually decided to head down to the vault.

On a not unrelated note, the moment she impaled was the WORST moment in the series by far, pretty much the crowning example of empty dramatic tension right there. Ok, I just saw the whole video and despite the fact that I love her intensely, it was obvious that Weiss was far from being perfect. But I still like her good aspects and overall development. I also feel the negative points were done mostly because of bad writing. Overall, she's still a decent/acceptable character in my book, so that's good.

I think unicorn of war said it best in his recent vid on rwby vol 1-5, Weiss' development and depth might not have been all that great in the beginning but it was cohesive. She wasnt stagnate as sliced bread like ruby. They didnt slap on a bunch of shit to her character like Blake. And unlike Yang, shit actually came from the things she have gone through that didnt make me wanna pull my hair out.

Weiss should've stumbled overcoming her racism. It also felt like there was some kind confrontation incoming with her and her father, but then she was just like, "Later, bye!" She leaves her house and the manor without anyone trying to stop her. Also, remember in Volume 1 when Weiss told Blake that the next time something happened to go to her team and not run? Well, Blake didn't... Why wasn't she as pissed as Yang?! She's been humbled by her friends, but she's still the Ice Queen. She should've been mad at Blake for leaving Yang when she needed her help in her recovery. Weiss didn't have a choice to when it came to leaving, but Blake did!
Also, Blake, having been in a violent organization, should've stumbled when it comes to dropping her White Fang ways. Just because she was against being violent, doesn't mean she should've stopped hating, or at least having a hard time getting along with humans, at first. Haven't watched Volume 6 yet, because I'm not a First Member, but I'm dreading it, because it feels that Weiss and Ruby have already forgotten what happened with the whole Blake leaving them, fiasco.
Those two forgave and forgot about Blake back in Volume 5 episode 8 because...I honestly don't know. The writers never show us why or when they did so with regard to Blake running away back in volume 3.
But why? She was never really that racist. She hated the White Fang, a terrorist group. She was describing Sun as a criminal at the beginning because all they knew about him when they met him was that he broke the law.
She was never shown hating faunus. People claiming she was some huge racist just didn't pay attention to what happened in the story.

And while faunus discrimination was atrociously un-portrayed because Miles and Kerry are failures that doesn't mean we, the viewers, weren't supposed to connect the dots with Weiss's initial depiction of being a bigot.

You have no idea how many times I have screamed this out loud at my screen when watching any scene involving Weiss.
The only reasonable explanation I can come up with (which I am going for in my fanfic) is that her plan was to attempt to achieve some kind of folk hero status through her efforts as a Huntress. She wants to essentially become famous and well-known as a champion who fights on behalf of "the people". Basically, she is a good person, and is taking steps to prove that to the world. So that when she returns to Atlas to assume control of the company by saying, "Guys... my father is an asshole, and I'm going to change things for the better", people will believe her, and support her.
Of course, a plan like this would also require Miles and Kerry to establish that Hunters and Huntresses frequently _attain_ such a status, instead of also being widely known as a group comprised of mercenaries and brigands that are only out for themselves and AUUUUUGHHH THEY FRUSTRATE ME SO MUCH!!!! >:(

Your absolutely right. It was easy to see Weiss grow as a character in the future from the beginning of the series. Right away, she was my favorite character because of her design and weapon choice-it a hunch but I knew she was going to be a great character to see later on.
Especially when a rude/emotionless/stubborn character is around others who are loose and kind-you know their gonna start changing.

I always love your critique of RWBY so much. It's really obvious that you go out of your way to take a step back and critically think about things from an honest, unbiased standpoint. The writers definitely made some awful decisions when it came to Weiss, and I think the worst was the fact that Jaune got to see Weiss get stabbed by Cinder but not...Ruby, her partner, the one who saw Pyrrha die.
Jaune never even saw that happen to Pyrrha so I don't understand why he was the one to watch? It would have been a perfect moment to give Ruby some serious development, having her flip her absolute shit when she sees her own partner, her best friend from Beacon (besides Yang obviously), almost die in the same way Pyrrha did. You don't watch someone die in front of you and come out emotionally unscathed and it would have been a great time to give Ruby some development by having her break down with some foreshadowing over the course of volume 5, hints to show that she's not totally alright. Hell, it would've been nice if Ruby had some PTSD-ness as well and she could have had some sort of traumatic "flashback" when she watches her own partner get an injury just like Pyrrha's. You know, the girl she watched die with her own two eyes?
Jaune watching Weiss die was pointless compared to the emotional impact it could have had on Ruby if she wasn't knocked out. I'm just pissed that she was used as a tool for Jaune's """development""" and semblance reveal instead.
Stefi To me Ruby is the one who should’ve been impaled by Cinder, it simply makes more sense, Cinder had a grudge against Ruby and had Leo invite the heroes over all so she can get at Ruby so it makes sense for her to try to kill Ruby, Jaune has been traveling with Ruby and has more of a relationship with her than he does with Weiss so the emotional impact should hit him harder and Ruby was knocked out and was literally a few feet away from Cinder so everything should’ve ended with Ruby being impaled. It makes more sense and gives closure to that “Cinder wants to kill Ruby” thing that was forgotten because we needed Cinder to be focused on Jaune for no reason.

Yo, you missed the part where we've seen Weiss flinch when someone raises their voice in anger. In Volume 4, when she's sneaking out, when Ironwood angrily yells "Jacques!", she flinches. Then, in Volume 5, when Yang raises her voice at Raven ("Don't you _dare_ talk about my family that way!"), Weiss flinches away from Yang. This is a clear effect from her upbringing with Jacques, who has a tendency to lose his temper. When he's angry, he yells, and when his anger peaks... well, the second time he argued with Ironwood, we heard glass breaking, followed by Ironwood telling Jacques to get a hold of himself. I think when Jacques gets too pissed off, he throws things, breaks things, hits things, but I think striking his children may be uncommon, hence Weiss' surprise. She probably expected him to take it out on an inanimate object, not on her.
Also, Weiss' goal to become a Huntress is connected with her grandfather, Nicholas Schnee. Nicholas had combat training, and he led expeditions to find Dust mines. This meant he knew what it's like out in the field because he didn't spend all his time sitting behind a desk. Like Qrow said in the World of Remnant episode, people respected that Nicholas was the kind of man who would stick his neck out for them. Weiss intends to follow in Nicholas' footsteps to restore respect to the Schnee name.
And honestly, since Jacques is in charge of the company, there was nothing Weiss could do about how the company is operated until she took over, but now she's not heiress anymore, so that part of the plan is out.
Okay I won’t lie , I started to love Weiss around season 3, plus i will admit she’s the most developed And mature . She ended up becoming my favorite slowly and I will always love her. Especially with the song , This life is mine . It basically tells the story , and I love the tone it sets at first. It became my favorite song and I think one of the most telling in all of Rwby.

RWBY has had its share of mistakes. Most of the major ones between season 4-5. But even with all of its blunders it still has a soft spot in my heart. I really hope season 6 is able to be better than the last 2 seasons. :/

I’m really glad someone else noticed how bullshit it was for Weiss’ racism to be swept under the rug without it being acknowledged ever again, especially considering that she never even apologized for her shitty behavior. There’s still a ton of people who hate her solely for that reason and honestly I don’t blame them.
My biggest fear for Weiss going into the Atlas arc is that the show will become over saturated with her so to speak. She already got some of the best development in the show and we’re already going back to her home where she will no doubt be a main focus again. It just seems like her character is getting too much focus in too short of an amount of time compared to the other members of her team. I’m praying I don’t end up feeling this way, but right now I still have no fucking idea why the writers thought going to back to Atlas was a better move than moving the story to Vacuo.
Because Vacuo is farther from Mistral than Atlas already is. Plus moving to Vacuo means both team SSSN and CFVY will be involved in the main story, since Sun lives in Vacuo while this upcoming novel this summer talks about CFVY's adventures on Vacuo which is where they went to after the Fall of Beacon. And honestly, CRWBY is already having a hard time writing RWBY and JNPR so what makes you think having CFVY and SSSN in the bunch would make it any better? Plus we've already been shown Atlas in Weiss' character arc in V4 so moving it to Atlas is a generally better move. Not to mention we already have an Ironwood yet no named Vacuo headmaster yet. By going to Atlas they also already have many possibilities to take the characters at. For one it's Weiss' homeland, it's also the land of racist fucks so that's a story point for Blake too.
It's literally just because RT already has parts of Atlas modeled, and they're pushing Rwby out the door yearly so they gotta use what they have.

Also, they showed with actions that she was no longer racist in the slightest in the Battle of Beacon when she risked her life by throwing herself between the Atlesian Mech and the injured Velvet. I mean, the bitch herself said that "I don't particularly trust the Faunus." Sorry, but judging an entire race based on the actions of a small group is racist. Instead of showing Weiss gradually unlearning her previous attitudes or even just her apologizing and acknowledging that her beliefs were wrong, the writers just made her flip a switch from being a racist bitch to not being racist without any further acknowledgement. That's not a redemption, that's just lazy writing.

Great video as always. Your channel is definitely my favorite for criticism on this show. Just wanted to mention though, in that scene in volume 1 where Weiss and Blake were confronting each other, Weiss also mentions that while she did have to deal with extra crap from her father, she also had to deal with family members being executed by the White Fang which Blake was a part of (when she was in the White Fang not part of the executions themselves). I'm not trying to justify Weiss' racism towards the faunus, racism is never a good thing, but murder and terrorism are also terrible things and if you look at it through the perspective of a rich, high status, sheltered girl, who's already having daddy issues, and personal stability being affected by a group of faunus committing terrorism, it makes sense why she had so much hate towards the faunus. Yeah the writers probably should have had Weiss apologize for her racist behavior in front of Blake at the time but I feel it also works both ways. While Blake didn't personally have a hand in those executions, she was still aware of how things were getting out of control (especially once Adam joined the picture) during her time at the White Fang. And rather than voicing her concerns for things getting out of control, or maybe even trying to change it from within (her dad was the leader at one point), she just did what she does best and ran away.
In short, I can understand both sides of the argument but both have faults that need fixing. I wish there was more character growth between Weiss and Blake especially. It would have been nice to see two characters from very different backgrounds grow together, agreeing and disagreeing with how they view the world and ultimately come to understand one another.
It's really such a shame. There's so many interesting concepts this show throws at the audience but their execution of these is hot garbage. Makes me sad too since I have a problem of getting my hopes up for this show. Shame on me.
The writers are stuck at a high-school level, which is why Weiss is the only good character. She's a basic high-school trope. When they have to write her as an adult, or god forbid write consistently, that's when it becomes apparent that the voice actress gives us way more than the script. A year or more has passed, since the start of the show. She's either eighteen or nineteen now. Yet, the only things, about Weiss, that have changed, are the changes mapped out by the trope of the ice queen thaws out. Like the other characters, she's not asking questions or challenging the little that she's being told. She's not growing organically, she's growing within the confines of the trope.
Thank you. I recall watching a video on Terrible Writing Advice about character development and it really feels like the writers took that video seriously and all the sarcasm flew right passed their heads. The section of that video where JP talks about how amateur writers confuse "flaw scrubbing" for "character development" fits Weiss to a T, unfortunately. Sometimes it's better for flaws to be something that a character learns to work _around_ rather than remove it entirely, because having your characters constantly remove their flaws means that the writer is forced to constantly throw new ones to face. Often this leads to these "flaws" to be very arbitrary rather than something that grew organically from what was previously established about the character. To go over Weiss' "flaw scrubbing":
Weiss has to learn to work well with others. She did. Weiss has to learn to not be "racist"( she wasn't racist but I'll humor the writers this time). She did. Weiss has to learn how to summon. She did. Weiss has to stop listening to her father's orders. She did.
Weiss is constantly getting over some character flaw and because of this she kinda has nothing to do now. The writers _could_ focus on a flaw that has been established in the show (like her over-relying on Summoning) but they probably won't.
I’m in grade 10 and I have a story that’s on Wattpad and I have a lot of characters that has development and after I watched his video on Yang, and I have a character in my story with PTSD, I said after watching that video was “This is what you can’t do to a character with PTSD” so I am not gonna give that character the poor development that Yang has received. I looked at the other videos he made and I am trying to get my characters at least decent character development

I honestly think you could remove Jaune and absolutely NOTHING of value would be lost. I honestly question why he, Ren and Nora are still here, they have nothing to do and just take away screen time from the real main characters, Jaune in particular for somehow being more of a main character than the actual main character.

Weiss is Best Girl, and you've made a great case for why, love your non bias as well. I agree on the whole 'no such thing as magic ' line is bs as what do they have to gauge magic with.
But would provide a counter argument for your last point; Wiess's character regarding the faunus. I think that we have been shown that she has moved beyond it as for one the camp fire talk with Blake and yang, she addresses Blake about how she wants to run the company, perhaps she refers to how the miners are treated.
That's weak I know, but this is something a little more cemented; In vol 3 Weiss runs infront of Velvet to take the hit from the Paladin, she was willing to throw herself in front of a faunus to save her, I believe that this is the way for the writers to show she has moved beyond the prejudice.

For me, the slap and her reaction to it was actually when she became my favorite, because the way I saw it, her reaction was testament to how much she's changed and how defiant she's become.
When her father slapped her, she didn't think he'd ever go that far, so she was surprised and hurt, but when I was watching that scene I feel like in her head she quickly said "Fuck that, I'm not letting him see me cry. I'm not letting him break me." and she composed herself and continued on. I love that she didn't give him the satisfaction of reacting how most young girls would if their father just outright smacked them in the face like that. It wasn't until he left that she let her emotions come out.

People used to think Winter was so mean, but their relationship is something I can relate to. Compared to yang and ruby's relationship. Only thing I didn't like that you pointed out was Weiss's fighting after vol 3. She trains so hard and I want to see more fruits of that labor. Her summoning is great, but I hope they don't forget her previous fighting style. Weiss had some serious footwork lol. I hope they do her justice this vol. It would even be cool if they brought her racism back this vol. That's something you just can't get over. Anyway, thanks for the vid vex

Weiss is truly the protagonist of the show.
I actually loved Weiss since the beginning. I saw her in volume 1 and knew already that she would be one of the best characters in the series.
Weiss was my favorite from her trailer start actually. She came off as an introvert and her fighting style was gorgeous to look at. I'm a sucker for good musical talent. Her archetype was the most like a princess from a fairy tale and that's part of the core appeal of rwby, or it was at the time. Her design is simply the best too.
In terms of actual writing in the show? She's not really tainted as badly by the bad writing compared to other characters relative to how much screentime she has. Volume 5 was bad for everyone but I enjoyed her character moment with Yang even though it would have been nice to see Ruby do it.
How is it that the writers managed to develop Weiss pretty well, but fall flat on their faces with the other three girls?
Both Weiss and Yang got the best character development by a country mile... I'm actually starting to ask myself who the main character is, because Ruby... out of all the characters, had the least development... AND SHES SUPPOSE TO BE THE PROTAGONIST. Hope Rooster teeth start to fix this. Exelent video btw, the points you made are perfect and i'm also one of those guys who dind't liked Weiss in the beginning because she was... well, one mean ass bitch. Now she's like team Rwby mother of the year figure, taking upon herself to take care of Ruby and Yang, and even Blake in a way. One last thing, i really hope Winter ends up joining Qrow hunter school in season 6, we would get that lovely chemestry between Winter and Qrow and we would also get the relanship development between Winter and Weiss, despite, Qrow really needs help to take care of those kids, he will go crazy if he doesn't.

Why is Weiss a huntress if she wants to run the SDC? It's always been something I never understood about her character. Her grandfather led Exhibitions for dust, yes, you'd have to be strong to do so but then you realize how is she going to manage her company without, say, some home support(Hoping for Whitley to be a reluctant yet begrudgingly-loving little brother figure to run the SDC while Weiss does the exhibitions.
I'm just hoping they DON'T ruin Whitley by making him cliche anta-brother. He's actually in a position to have really good reasons and actual representation that not all male Schnees are assholes just because.
You know, in a sick twisted way that's the reason I kinda 'liked' Blake. After showing how cowardly she was SHE had THE MOST to repent from and I was interested in seeing how she would bounce back from such a black mark on her personality.
I thought her running away after Yang got her arm cut off was the lowest moment for her as she falls victim to one of her worst traits. I thought it was a genuinely horrible part of her that crippled her ability to actually be a decent friend. Therefore, shooting a deep rift between team RWBY that would last even after they get back together.
By comparison she makes everyone around her look even better (like Sun Wukong) when they refuse to abandon her even though she would so easily abandon them. Having someone like Sun being her COMPLETE opposite in the situation would make her reflect (on her pattern of abandonment of her parents, Adam, the White Fang, team RWBY) and realize this is something she can't keep reasoning to herself she's better off doing; abandoning people and getting mad at them for wanting helping. Then have her realize how screwed up in the head she was for thinking that way. Which, I personally imagined, would makes for some emotional scenes and good moments.
I thought THAT was setting her up for change in the same way Weiss was in the beginning of the show. Of course, I may have put a little too much faith in the writing and... yeah none of that happened the way it should have for me personally. That's just my opinion.

She's def' the strongest character they've got to work with, after butchering just about everyone else.
The sad part, is whether or not it's just a slow, countdown, until everyone reaches the bottom.
Personally I always thought a lot of characters didn't really have a good process of mastering ability's before have the final result. I do think Weiss had enough time to develop her semblance, but from what I've seen not a lot of variety in the use of hers. I wish she learned slowly instead of just knowing how to summon completely, Like a short cut summon of the knights arm (kinda like bayanetta) and the sword instead of the whole thing or briefly summoning the boar grimm for a quick ram. Its also seems to make her forget about all the other stuff she has with her glyphs and swordplay.
Kinda similar with ruby to, her red ball thing at first I thought was just a visual effect after she built up enough speed ( like during the food fight, kinda like a red bullet) but seems to just defy gravity and fly at times. It loses alot of build-up when it happens, and can't tell on how it developed.
Edit: Plus if Weiss did develop her powers that way, it would of made Jaune amping her summon better because it could of summoned the full knight instead of just a arm, much more exciting.
I'm a huge fan of the idea of her brother undertaking a similar arc and maybe displaying a creative mind instead of the brute force everyone else seems to fond of.
