Ok from a ACTUAL writer's standpoint Ruby should be VERY uncomfortable around Penny and avoid speaking to her if she's someone that bottles up her emotions and grief. Because what we see is not her bottling up her grief, she has NONE until the plot demands it
As a writer myself, RWBY is at best just enjoyable. At worst, I dont think it is a good idea to use it as your main source of writing knowledge. Fine as a secondary source if that, but there is so many general inconsistencies, flat characterization, etc I find it difficult to recommend for anyone vaguely serious about the craft.
as AN* actual writer, its also improper English to start a sentence with 'because' beacause its used to join two clauses, an independant and a dependant. Unless you put a comma after because then state both clauses
Just casually gonna slide in here- Psychologically speaking, she is likely dissociating Penny and what happened to V1 Penny. It's a common enough issue in trauma victims. Essentiially, they pretend nothing ever happened and try to force themselves to move on. Were Ruby one to bottle up her emotions to avoid processing them fully, then dissociating a different looking Penny from the one she saw wounded - and this is a new distinction that would further the dissociation, allowing her to justify it - one of MANY natural reactions would be to just pretend it didn't happen. Don't think about it, don't feel about it, just play like it never happened. The mistake fake hatedom pseudo critics like Vexed make often is in saying 'This is how people react to X'. No. EVERYTHING has a RANGE of VARIOUS reaction possibilities. Up to and including NO REACTION AT ALL. Many soldiers who see their fellows die suffer PTSD. Some, however, do not. Likewise, to carry the example, many PTSD sufferers can react to loud sounds as 'triggers'. And many WON'T. So mister writer, please acknowledge at SOME POINT that you are simply asserting one of a variety of possible reactions from Ruby.

Volume 8 needs to open with grimm running through the streets civilians and soldiers getting slaughtered, with all the teams hearing the reports from the ship's radio. With all the death and chaos, Ruby then has a moment of clarity. "Ironwood might not have been wrong." Or "Ozpin had a greater responsibility than I could handle." Basically Ruby needs to admit she fucked up.
Consider the fairy tale inspiration, since Penny (pinocchio) is on the ship, the wahle is gonna swallow them, the city dies while they are busy getting out and they gonna blame Ironwood for all because team RWBY could have prevented the slaughter if Ironwood hadn't pushed them into the ship (they actually couldn't but the protagonist can't be wrong, right...?!)

They *REALLY* should've went the sharingan route so that Ruby could go blind if she over used her silver eye power. Every single fight involving grim feels like a chore to watch since we already know Ruby will one shot them regardless of how big or intimidating they look.
Benjamin McNeil Well the consequences of possibly going blind would a great character struggle for her. She wants to save everyone but is she willing to give up her eye or eyes to achieve it? Could have been interesting.
Seems like writers just don't consider him to be necessary for the plot anymore. He was supposed to be the one Ruby can always rely on. Like, all these theories about him being her father are not without a reason: he gave her so much more attention than Yang. As well as saved her several times. And then there is Vol 6 when he falls into despair. And it was such a good opportunity for Ruby to "grow" as a character: be supportive and help her damn uncle at once. But nope, she somewhat behaves like a rebellious brat in an "out of my way" style. Hell, she threatened to attack him at the beginning of Vol 6. I wonder how this didn't make his depression even worse. After that it became clear writers just don't know what to do with him. In Vol 7 he literally has neither any interaction with his niece, nor any contribution to the main storyline, always in the background.
RWBY is the best example of wasted potential. I am truly sad of what has happened to a show I once loved. I wish we could go back to Vol. 3 and start over again from there

At least Deku from My Hero Academia is a Character who's just like Ruby but done so much better! We see his struggles, his breaking points (Because Deku has more than 1 breaking point in the series) and they make him have so many depths and layers as a main protagonist.
Deku is actively getting better with his powers episode after episode and we see his improvements from season 1. As for Ruby, we rarely see her train or even TALK about her silver eyes for 4 volumes and there are still many questions that are left unanswered.

And Deku is a far better protagonist than Ruby ever could be at this point. You know what would be great? If the writers had take the idea from the nightmares that Ruby have bc of her mom disappearing/dying, that it would be a lot better development for Ruby, and the scene with Salem would be a lot more powerful
Or better yet, let Salem create a Beowulf that can mimic people’s voices and have that wolf mimic Summers voice as it lures Ruby into a forest where it calls out for Ruby to help her, to save her. When Ruby realizes that she is not with her team the wolf starts mocking and blaming Ruby in Summers voice. Calling her a fool and blaming her for all the deaths that have happened on her Journey. That would be a HELLA good throw back to Red RidingHood and the Wolf.
Qrow was in the background of the scene where Blake said they would follow Ruby's lead. Also, I think the writers expect us to think Mantle looks horrible because it doesn't look like Vale, which is oddly racist.
Same can be said for Menagerie...”Over crowded hell hole” but is actually a tropical paradise straight outta Hawaii. Mantle is the lower class? It looks like a steam punk London city complete with heating and security drones!

Have I ever told you about a tragedy of Qrow Branwen the Drunk? Seriously, he got the most miserable fate possible. From one of the best and definitely the fan favourite character of the entire show he was reduced to the least important. He now has no authority over his own niece that doesn't even respect him anymore. He has no more contribution to the main story. And so writers did the worst thing ever: made him a parody of himself, doing foolish things such as teaming up with a bloodthirsty maniac, getting his friend killed and blaming his "bad luck" in anything.

Man, I'm so tired of that! Only team RWBY is allowed to rock and always wins, and JNR always bits the dust! I crossed fingers for Ace-Ops. to wip their asses. If an audience cheers for antagonist in a fight - authors are doing something wrong.
Every single setback, consequences ,and error from team RWBY gets dumped to the people outside of their team.... Oscar gets fucking SHOT for something that was Ruby's fault. Team JNR failed to defeat Neo who stole the relic while team RWBY beats (possibly murders) THE BEST HUNTSMEN IN ATLAS EASILY, and Qrow lost his friend over his own stupidity, lets Tyrian get away and gets arrested with Robin. It feels like everyone BUT team RWBY ends up being walking burdens and weights preventing RWBY to succeed.
To be fair, Neo has been proved to be significantly above RWBY since like... ever, so yeah, without counting magic users like maidens, Ozpin and Salem, Neo is just behind Qrow, Tyrian, Hazel and Clover (F for lucky boi) and Glynda.
"Ruby talks down to her uncle. Why?" Well, listen for the key word in her speech; "Adult". The writers are trying to give their child protagonist agency in the plot. How do you give your child protagonist agency if an "Adult" is in the way? They can't, so they make the adults incapacitated, evil, absent, or wrong. Ozpin, Taiyang, Qrow, and now Ironwood. This is nothing new for anime shows, but RWBY is the most egregious example I've seen in a while.
Meanwhile over in Star Wars Dave Filoni manages to do that without having to completely shit on the adults. The kid even manages to learn lessons along the way.
Other shows would simply make the kids special or seperate them from the adults so that arcs can happen. Like when all the jounin are conveniently busy in Naruto, when Ichigo has to infiltrate the soul society and later hueco mundo without the help of anyone stronger than himself, etc. RWBY fails to explain why Ozpin and Qrow don't solo, or why anyone other than Oscar and Qrow even have to be there or how RWBY can even touch opponents on the level of Qrow or Ozpin.
thedarklordx But even in the examples you stated, they still had/ needed adult help to push through. In the case of Naruto, even though the Sasuke Rescue party defeated the Sound 5, they still needed the help of Jounins/ Jounin level allies to since their victories were near fatal/ near self-sacrificing. That arc showed their potential, but it also showed that the kids still had a ways to go. For Bleach it was moreso a Deus Ex Machina held a similar purpose to Naruto. But my point is that you can still give your kid/ inexperienced characters agency, without having to completely dismiss your more experienced characters.
The problem with Ruby isn't exactly her fault, but the mindset of the writers. Having Ruby do shitty things (yelling at her uncle, being a bitch to Ironwood, not doing anything while Tyrian is murdering people) isn't a bad thing, it can build character and it is good that she isn't morally perfect anymore. The problem is that the writers don't see these things as mistakes or wrongdoings. And this destroyes Ruby's character fast. They portray her as still perfectly good while her actions are morally wrong, and this makes viewers hate her... even more then before, when she was just a nothing character and stupid.
Yeah, I'm trying to figure out good comparisons to Ruby's actions, and development. I'm thinking Harry Potter and Spider-Man in Homecoming. Harry, as time went on, grew to accept how others were instrumental to his victories, and made sacrifices on his behalf. MCU Spidey thought he was doing right, and that he had everything figured out. Then it all blew up in front of his face, literally twice. Then when he tries to shift blame to Iron Man, Tony Stark destroys his arguments in less than 2 minutes. This humbles Peter into someone who could be a hero with more forethought and consideration.
I honestly want the cute badass girl back. The writers think making her act like a self righteous prick makes people like actually does the opposite. Now I want this hell to end. Please someone end it before they have her scream JUSTICE

Ruby most weakness is being naive. She still acts like a child. She's very stubborn and isn't a proper leader. I'd say V3 was the main peak at where she would understand how cruel this world is, just like in Roman's speech, but alas, keep her immature for the laughs I guess. Also, why didn't she tell Penny about what happened to Pyrrha?

I guess when they said they care about him just as much as they did Pyrrha they meant that they didn’t give a shit about Jaune at all.
I do hate that everyone just does what Ruby says and she is the leader of everyone. Qrow is silent and does nothing even though his experience in this is longer than they have all been alive. I get he is in a bad place with the knowledge that the fight he has taken part in was basically pointless but to then just become a nothing character until a fight starts is not how it should go. Ozma is acting like a child that ran away and hid as soon as the truth came out. please explain how this is how an immortal wizard acts who, from the flashback, already went through his slump years of depression and loss in previous lives. Does the merge apparently make Ozpin the child while the meat suit gets everything else handed to him. Even Jaune, the leader or team JNR, seems to no longer have an opinion. I know he is not liked by many but in terms of his character he should be as good a leader as Ruby (just not good at making names for team moves). I honestly hoped that while they kept with Ozma’s plan Jaune would be the one against it, the voice against him and he is against following the new plan of a man who’s last one got Pyrrha killed (only reason he sticks around is to ensure he does not get another friend killed). Out of everyone he has suffered the most in recent years due to Ozpin. All these other people that could be someone Ruby talks to about her decisions and looks to for input (no, bringing up her mum was not good cus he is just reinforcing her bad decision) are all nothing characters now that just nod and go along with what the girl who is very willing to self sacrifice says. if it was not for the title of the show/team I would see no reason to put her as team leader especially since she skipped two years. Team Rwby is supposed to be (or at least many tell me) a reflection of team STRQ, maybe Ozpin should learn they did not turn out well and not to repeat having a girl very similar to her mother be the leader. Being an MC does not mean they need to be a leader, Most anime/manga can show you that.
You know what I would have loved? Jaune going behind everyone's backs and telling Ironwood the truth in secret. Why would he do this? Because of a sense of guilt and duty. Jaune cheated and lied his way into Beacon. He was unprepared and untrained and that came to a head when Pyrrha sent him away and subsequently died. At this point he just wants to protect those he has left but in doing so, he endangers the lives of his sister, his in-law and his nephew just so they can get to Atlas. After all that he has suffered through, I could absolutely see him laying everything on the table to Ironwood for no other reason then the fact that he doesn't want to end up like Oz who constantly withheld truths and secrets from many people. A rift and battle of ideals and how to be a good leader would have done wonders for Ironwood, Clover, Jaune, and Ruby as characters imo. But instead Ruby has suddenly become the leader for everyone and no one can have a differing opinion then she does otherwise you are the bad guy and the one who is wrong.

When it came to telling the truth I was thinking Oscar would do it behind their back since he was basically forgotten for the first part so he would bond more with ironwood who did care and tried to help him and could work as a way to distance himself from ozma and how he does things. hell, team Rwby did not even really talk to him except for that really cringy part where they tried to set up Rosegarden (just before ruby let Oscar take over having to tell ironwood). Jaune was a character they got scarred using cus they treated him as a mc in the first volume but in trying to fix it they made him basically just a joke character with a semblance to keep everyone else safe and a weapon transformation that makes no sense with his training. If set up well he could easily become a third party in this secret war. One that disagrees with Ozpins methods, treating people as pawns in a game of chess. But nah, look at all the milfs that want him all because of his stupid hair.

A bit off topic but something I noticed about Cinder is that she has a death fakeout every other volume as seen by 3, 5 and 7. We may get something like that for volume 9 then...

Yup. For 4 volumes, Team RWBY had _never_ beaten a Huntsman-level Human/Faunus opponent without help from others, excluding the tournament. Just low-level thugs from Junior, White Fang, and the Branwen tribe. Actual threats were handled by Penny, Qrow, or the presence of a Maiden. But now they can handle the best of Atlas?
Even if the plot called for them to (somehow) win. They were handed that "win" waaaaay too easily. AceOps acted like a bunch of emo handicapped idiots. Totally unprofessional. A far cry from the start of the volume. While RWBY functioned as a well (mary-sue tainted) oiled team of awesome. AceOps were wrecked, RWBY barely a scratch. Even Weiss won! On her own yet! What does that say!? The fight could have been over before it started if the AceOps operated as usual. There was no real sense of struggle, difficulty. Pain or suffering from going up against the best Team in Atlas. Possibly the world. I guess there is none greater than Team RWBY now....?
They were on to something in the first half of Volume 6, and then they magnificently fucked it up. Do you remember any cringey attempt of an inspirational speech in the first half of Volume 6? Even if there is, it’s so subtle that you won’t remember it.

The only thing I'll disagree here is saying that Ruby struggled to use her Silver Eyes against Gojira. She really didn't. She just thought about some stuff for a few moments, and bam, now she's basically a master. The reason why they didn't bring up her eyes in V7 is because in the writers' mind, that obstacle has already been overcome. In their minds, that arc is already complete, even though it shouldn't be, not yet.
What if the only way to tap into it was to delve into anger or hate. Kinda like how a negative + a negative = a positive. The more she uses it the more she loses herself. Her silver eyes as an ability need a downside to it. Look at Naruto Eight Gates kills you the further you go. Sharingon causes blindness the more its used. Chakra if depleted can cause death in some circumstances. A person is vulnerable trying to enter sage mode. What's the downside to silver eyes? She passed out once?

I'd rather have Oscar as the main protagonist at this point. Ruby as a character is just getting in the way of the story now. She needs to either get more depth as a character in this world or get lost and take those poorly written Wasp ship fools with her.

@@summere.6860 Just like Ruby. No. I don't cringe every time he opens his mouth. When he speaks, whether it is Ozpin or Oscar, I am actually interested in what he has to say. I actually like the dilemma Oscar faces with wondering if he will be the same person after all of this. And we do get little snippets of Oscars underlying personality like Ruby, but Ruby's is, in my opinion, unbearable at this point, due to the writers. And yes, the mysterious apparition Ozpin is the main draw for the young boy. But, in my opinion, that is to Ruby's detriment. I was interested in everything Ozpin from day one, and still am. And Oscar's mental struggles with their situation is just the icing on the cake for me. Maybe both characters might not have much to work with, but I just find Ruby to be annoying at this point. I feel the exact opposite for Oscar. They have had so much time to properly build on her character, Oscar hasn't, and is still leagues less annoying than her.
also correct me if I’m wrong, but we haven’t had a real history lesson on why the silver eyes are there, how they are passed down, why it’s a thing, etc. there’s good theories, but no real facts from RT about the silver eyes origin. also also, Ruby used her silver eyes hella fast without any problems when she saw Cinder fighting Winter, so I guess her trouble with using her silver eyes on command isn’t that much of an issue anymore 🤷♀️ also also also, please make a Robyn or Cinder video 😩
Welcome to rwby, we also did not know anything about the world, watch the new volumes without watching the worlds of remnant before and you have NO information on the world at all. And if you HAVE watched world of remnant get ready for the inconsistencies and plot holes.
honestly, we really didn't. I'm so disappointed in how they've handled revealing the silver eyes storyline. We first knew about it in vol 1 chapter 1 or 2. They set it up so we were aware that her eyes are special. Then we have to wait until vol 3 for it to reveal itself and after 4 chapters we still have no in depth details on the origins of silver eyes. We could have had it with maria, but the excuse the writers came up with is that she doesn't know as much about it, and neither did her father. The only thing keeping me with rwby is the summer storyline. I really hope they don't fuck it up, but who knows.
Not to mention Maria only had one session with Ruby talking about how to use the silver eyes, and Ruby had to buy more time in order to use them on the giant Godzilla grim (I’m sorry I don’t know all the grim names) then Ruby can’t use them on a Goliath but can use them against Cinder. So which one is it? Is she inexperienced and still trying to figure it out or is she a pro all of a sudden? 🤦🏼♀️
I know this isn't the point, but Ruby's voice has become notably MORE high pitched when in season 1 she sounded more natural. The voice directors need to let her actress dial it down a notch. Edit: And yes Ruby is a terrible character. Yang and Blake are also terrible, toxic and deserve each other.
V1 Ruby sounded very natural although the voice acting was horrible horrible. I remember being confused in V2 to why her voice suddenly changed and sounded more childlike. V2-3 was very high pitched. But I feel V4-7 the voice actress has found a good place. The acting has improved and the voice is flowing better with only few scenes coming off bad.
I agree, I hate her voice now. She sounds somewhat better but they REALLY need to make her sound more mature. Hard to take her seriously during a protagonist speech when she sounds like a 13 year old... And I fucking LOVE this show. That's saying something.
You know what makes it worse? Her voice sounds normal in RWBY CHIBI of all places. In fact, RWBY Chibi somehow has better sounding voice-acting than the main series, though for every character besides Ruby, that may be due to just a better script.
The disrespect from the writers and Ruby to Qrow is beyond belief. They mad him pathetic, and ironically, this happened after they stopped his drinking. Imagine becoming more pathetic post-addiction and depression.
The writers don't understand that Ruby developing independantly doesn't mean disrespecting authority, like her uncle who's terrified of losing her (before they ruined him in the last volume). Then they completely trash her bond with Penny and the effect her death had on her. Then she lied to the only trustworthy person in authority (Ironwood) they could rely on and ruined their alliance. Ruby being inexperienced would be okay if they gave it due attention and consequences, buuuuut they don't. The Aesops fight was absolutely ridiculous. These writers cannot write characters, they write the most stale tropes ever.
Well they did come come from the God of Light... Even though we NEEEVER saw a scene where the God of Light mentioned them. They could have had the God of Light bring it up when he brought Ozma back to life saying he'll have some allies such as the Silver Eyed Warriors. Unless they did that and I completely missed it Haha.
@@demetriusprime1505 the loosest way i can see the God of Light using a similar power was when he wiped away the grimm that were going to attack him just by standing still as a white light fills the screen, but other than that we have nothing to go by whether or not Silver Eyes are magic or just some biological weapon

I feel like the greatest hit to Ruby’s character is that the entire mood shift with volume 3’s end happened too quickly for Ruby’s character to adapt so we’re still stuck with the typical “we’re the main characters so everything we do is the correct choice because it’s morally right” kind of MCs.
Wasn’t Ruby’s ultimate character goal being a huntress? We need to see Salem use a Grimm to seriously injure either Ruby herself or someone close to her to both show the extent of Salem’s skills and give Ruby a reason to doubt her dream of being a huntress.

B when I think of the show the walking dead, I think of Rick grimes last episode. They just removed the main protagonist from the show. I could see this happening to Ruby. Weiss might go find her family while Blake and Yang deals with Grimm and ruby will find Oscar and tried to petrified the whale Grimm and some Grimm as well

I don't think the writer knows what direction they should take the series next. Sometimes it looks like it's getting darker in tone and theme but then it suddenly shifts into "awesome battle sequences, friendship and support will win the day". They keep alluding to Salem as the ultimate evil but so far we've not seen much of her capabilities, we saw her cronies got some cool sequences tho. Honestly, i'd appreciate it if the writer make Ruby doubt her ability to judge people, i'd love to see Ruby having a friendship with someone only for them to totally betray her and Ruby's the one to blame for everything, sending her into an emotional state of paranoia about who she can and can't trust. Yang and Blake now only serve as shipping token because the community cares about lesbian licking each other more than they do about the plot and character growth because somehow holding hands can win PTSD. Qrow got reduced to a self-pity alcoholic even tho his entire first appearance set him up with the motif of "an alcoholic on appearance but is actually super competent and smart, a bonafide living legend" and now he's getting talked down to by a walking plot device.
The problem is they seem to be making things up as they go along and forget things that were pre-established. The writers fail at weaving coherent plot threads among many other things.

It ruined the entire team dynamic when Yang pressed more importance to her girlfriend than her sister. Heck, I think RWBY should have been a merry sisterhood who does things together shopping, partying and Grimm hunting. I don't mind Yang and/or Blake being Lesbian, I just don't think it should be them hooking up, and as long as Yang still looks out for her sister who's trying her darnest to lead but is stumbling hard.

Honestly, it seems that Ruby has got it into her mind that she can save everyone. I want a moment where Ruby is forced to choose between saving people and stopping Salem; and her to realise that you can’t save everyone. I want her to face the consequences of her saving someone where she was suppose to be doing something that would push them forward in stoping Salem; like Salem actually gets closer to winning all because Ruby tried to be the hero who can do everything. But knowing Rooster Teeth, it’s going to be that not only does Ruby succeed in saving people but also accomplishes in getting forward in stopping Salem.

Flat personality characters aren't a problem like Ash Ketchum, Goku and Naruto. Except all those characters have expressed a range of emotions in their shows. Their highs and lows, their defeats and victories. And they made a clear impact and effect on other people. Naruto and Naruto bridge, and Ash with Go in the latest pokemon show. Rudy barely does any of that. Heck, she's more of a manace than a benefit.
I'm just going to throw this out there. If Ironwood said that to Ruby when talking about how she lied, then it _should be_ a moment of "Oh! I messed up!" With him, unknowingly, throwing her words back into her face.

For me, I always like it when the main character gets beat up but gets back up to beat down their opponent. Not once have we seen Ruby bleed. We only seen her incompassitated, and that's from one strike. And she still has the gull to think she's better than everyone else.

I stopped watching RWBY at the end of season 3 and your commentary has reassured me that was a good decision. RWBY was always a little cringe, but it had a lot of heart and some awesome Rule of Cool animation. Strip that away and it's another time sink with a toxic fandom, and this is a more entertaining alternative to reading Wikias to see what happens or if it'll turn around. Keep up the good work.
If this show was from a simple citizens perspective in Remnant, the 4 main characters could easily be seen as the bad guys from their perspective (Stealing shit, luring Grimm to their city cause of their shitty plan and stealing, getting away with so many wrong doings for no reason...they arent trained graduated huntsmen they NEVER GRADUATED AND BECAME FULL ON HUNTSMAN...they werent the only huntsman that fought bravely during the fall of Beacon that deserve respect, lying to people who have helped then so god damn much, throwing angry fits when something doesnt go their way even though their way would result in lives potentially being lost, yelling at depressed drunk uncle who has lost so much in his life...and the best one yet...weakening the best military in the whole world and the ONLY defence it has....RIGHT when Salem arrives with an army) Ruby from a citizens perspective (and honestly my perspective) could be seen as an inexperienced, idiotic, cocky, whiny bad guy that is spoilt with how much shit she and her team get away with. I've been saying something similar about Vol 2's finale. Some fans don't understand why Ozpin's actions were called in to question while the council sided with Ironwood. Uh, because their character POV. To the side characters, people who don't have audience perspective, it looked as though Oz showed favoritism to a team that his own school ranked as under-qualified, and they failed to prevent the Breach.

Oz's own school ranked them as under-qualified (which showed) and other than Weiss being an heiress, there's seemingly nothing exceptional about them. Unlike Harry Potter, for example, there's no 'Boy who Lived' fame going for them, and Silver Eyes are still myth. Saying "they would have gone to MG anyway" is not a valid reason to withhold a more experienced team from being sent. So in the eyes of James and the Council, Oz had serious Intel of criminal activity, and gave it to a bunch of rookies who fumbled and let the Breach happen. Excuses for this won't make sense. They don't know they are side characters and Team RWBY are the mains.

She hasn't grown or changed since Vol 1. none of the characters have. They've never won any fight, all of their "victories" are handed to them because plot.
TBH Salem's "yo momma" joke could easily be something Ruby could cry about; just have Salem twist the knife with a "Oh she died most beautifully, as I [insert torture here]." That kind of speech could act as a catalyst for attacking Ruby's admiration of her mom or shattering her own beliefs about what it means being a great huntress. Overall they've watered Ruby down. Ruby barely gets as nerdy as she used to about weapons, she doesn't get nearly as excitable or nervous as she used to, and her social awkwardness isn't really there. The writers praise their characters but keep ruining them for the sake of the plot. In fact with the way the ace ops fight went, are we sure team RWBY isn't getting subsumed by a hive mind?
Hell maybe have Salem tell that their adventures and victories were for nothing. Mistral actually fell due to a Faunus uprising from their own citizens and Argus fell because Caroline was overpowered by the Grimm and overtook the city.
They better explain SEW & what happened to Summer Rose in Volume 8, because: 1) they have been hype Summer since Vol.2,3,5,6,7. 2) Also explain who or what the Silver-eyed warriors is(like say, can they effect an powerful immortal grimm witch or not.)
"So I was confused as to why the writers had her abandon compassion." Basically, this. Ruby post-Volumes 6 and 7 is a confusing character to me. I liked her assertiveness and that she was finally stepping up in her role as a leader and, in a meta-sense, the story's protagonist. But for that to come across as a lack of understanding and compassion baffled me. If they're taking it the route of "the world's not a fairytale and even the so-called simple soul can become disillusioned with it", then that could honestly be fantastic. But, like you said, we're back to the waiting game to see where she ends up.

I think Ruby's stagnant personality could be explained into the show as being caused by Trauma. Ruby is only 17-18 she was only 15 when she saw Penny and Pyrrha murdered, and saw a man get swallowed whole by a Grimm. Pretty damn traumatic. And children often experience stunted emotional growth when exposed to such trauma. The problem is that Rooster Teeth haven't even really addressed Volume 3 with Ruby. Jaune is entirely shaped by the events in Volume 3, his love for Pyrrha and grief at her death driving him forward. He acts the most human out of the students, reacting violently when Cinder taunted them, and showing understandable rage at Ozpin for basically causing Pyrrha's death. I say Jaune should be the new Protagonist

See the problem I have with Ruby Rose is that it feels like almost everyone else in the show feels like a better main protagonist than her. Jaune, as boring and incompetant as he is, feels like a standard anime protagonist with a character arc. Weiss and Yang have family issues that they're dealing with. Blake has her whole thing going on with the White Fang. Pyrrha is a tragic heroine who feels obligated to take on a huge responsibility that ends up resulting in her death. Oscar is the reincarnation of a powerful wizard with a horrible, cyclical destiny. Even Nora and Ren want to kill the Grimm that destroyed their village. Ruby has some magic eyes and is supposed to be The Leader, but that's it. Sure the Silver Eyes are talked up as this amazing ability possessed by legendary warriors, but how exactly is this any different from the Schnee Family Semblance, or even just a regular Semblance??? Ruby has no connection to the plot, and this was okay back in the early Volumes when we were establishing everybody's characters, but we're now almost 8 seasons in and we still don't know why she's even here or have any proper motivation for her to be a Huntress beyond "because I want to help people and Huntsmen are cool I guess". What's worse is that they established that she has this connection to her mother that is supposedly important and it has gone without development for years. Summer may as well not even be a character considering how little she matters to the plot. I just. Making your main character important, or at least interesting, is considered basic storytelling and the fact Rooster Teeth couldn't even manage that encapsulates how poorly they've handled this franchise after Monty's death.
Okay, here's the long rant of mine about V7 in general, rather than Ruby specifically. V7's ending and last few episodes kinda ruined the show for me, because there's really only two ways Volume 8 or 9 can end with the setup we've been provided and they both suck. 1.) Against all the odds, Salem is driven off and her Grimm armada is beaten back, with varying levels of collateral damage to Mantle and Atlas and who knows how many people dead. This ending would pretty much suck all the drama and tension out of any final confrontation with Salem by the end, because the 'heroes' have already proven that they can face her down and defeat her as they are now. There's no reason for them to get any stronger, no reason to gather any other Relics or Maidens, they're fine just the way they are. 2.) Salem wins, her armada overruns Atlas and Mantle or, failing that, she kamikazes her island-sized Whale Grimm into Atlas and smashes it into Mantle. Some people escape, but only a small portion of the population overall. Most of the Atlas military is wrecked, their command structure is dead and now Salem has the Creation Relic Vault safely in her hands, all she needs is Penny. This ending would suck because there is no way I can see the goodies, or even humanity itself, surviving the aftermath. The other 3 Kingdoms have been crippled in various ways; Vale is still wrecked from Volume 3, Mistral has lost most of their Hunters because Lionheart sold them out and Vacuo is a bunch of isolated small communities, easy pickings to a unified Grimm armada under Salem's leadership. Atlas is the only Kingdom able to form an effective defence as of right now and if it goes down, the sheer negativity spike from all over the world when the news reaches them (via communication or survivors from Atlas) will draw in masses of Grimm and likely overwhelm their weakened defences anyway. This is why V7's ending does not work for me. What do you all think?
I prefer the Salem victory between the two endings since it makes the most sense what with how RT set up RWBY and it would be the ultimate message that not only was Ruby not ready but her deceit had helped Salem to win.
Lol who cares about Vale or Remnant anymore. Anyone else noticed how the enire world shrunk past season 3 or is it just me? I think that turning the whole history of Kingdoms and Hunters into a bad break break up beetween Salem and Ozpin was the worst development the show has made. It turned Remnant from a vast, mysterious and unexplored world with long history into some countryside with major events resolving around just two people. Because, at the end of the day anyone else was irrelevant.

Ok listen she Got range and effect on characters in volume 6 but in V7 I feel like she was shoved aside, she lied to İronwood and lets say that is the start of the conflict, What about progression and ending of that conflict? Ruby is useless in those parts, all of those parts are given to Oscar without any transition. Why? I am not saying Oscar cant have his moments but why all İronwood impactful scenes are given to that kid? Ruby is the protag, she is the one Who started it not Oscar. And that conflict between them goes nowhere, its Just one scene and that is incomplete,why are they doing this to her? WHY? I am not excited for V8, not one bit
they don't know how to write the main character because as you say things that the main character should do are given to others; and responsibilities and consequences for actions (when something fks up) are never given to the main character for development so that the main character is always right.

Understanding the choice Oz took is not earned by Ruby, she doesnt spent effort with İronwood, any lessons she takes from there are unearned. That is the point of progression in stories, make the characters actually do something and spend effort. Rooster teeth would have already failed of she even decided to spill the truth because she is not the one Who is changing İronwood, Oscar is the one Who took both progress and conclusion, Ruby only has the start. Miles, Kerry, Ciersi(?), Eddy already damaged the conflict beyond recovery. And the fact that they did it without any transition only makes it worse

As poorly Ruby has been handled through the series in terms of dynamic development, the notion of the *flat character* as the main lead isn’t an inherently bad thing. It’s just a type of character arc. Goku is one of the most beloved heroes in all of anime but he’s as flat as you can get with little to no character development. What makes a good flat character arc is when they affect other characters and environment around them as opposed to themselves. Such as her friends, teammates, or even the villains can be developed because of the actions and beliefs of the flat character. It’s especially necessary for a long running series like RWBY. But the problem here isn’t that Ruby is mostly portrayed as a flat character, I mean she is but it’s not why people have a problem with her. The problem is that she barely affects anyone around her. Sure you could argue about Weiss and Qrow but outside of that everyone else wouldn’t be affected even if you took ruby out out the equation.
The most recent character development Goku's had in YEARS was him being okay with Broly calling him Kakarot, indicated that their conflict brought him to be a bit more accepting and proud of his Saiyan heritage than he was before.
You serious? Goku got a shit ton of criticism during Super because he didn't have positive character development and even regressed depending on who you asked. Goku isn't "beloved" because he's well written, his popularity comes from Dragon Ball's iconic status which lets it get away with writing flaws that other anime don't. If Dragon Ball came out these days, Goku would get dismissed as a bland protagonist who has nothing to him aside from eating and liking fighting.
@@Corrector1 While you have a point about Dragon ball being given a pass, I still think Goku would be fine if he was created in these times. The fact that neither he or the show pretends that Goku is more than a dude that loves to fight helps. He isn't a traditional hero, threats come his way and it just gives him more narrative reasons to get stronger and fight bigger threats. Because he's so simple, any moment when he shows any positive traits outside of training and fighting stick with the fans. His anger at Krillan's death. Putting his faith in Gohan to defeat Cell. Pleading with Vegeta to help him stop Buu. There are more moments, but you get the point. He isn't deep, but that works with the show.

Only one who you could argue would be jaune because of his history with cinder, but Nora and Ren aren't needed for the story, the kiss was the only thing of impact they did last volume and honestly that should have been done after volume 4 anyone who think else is a fking idiot.
All I can describe RWBY right now is like a burning wrecked train still heading to its destination. The captain (*writers) is unsure where to go while the passengers (*fandom) scream in an already burning and busted train (*the show) with no stops to make for repair (*improvements).
I will fight tooth and nail over the Summer Rose flashbacks because they just don't make sense... AT ALL!! You don't retain memories from before you are three, maybe even four; the mind doesn't have that kind of space to spare when you are that young. I understand that concept very well with my niece. I practically raised her since she was a baby until she went off to live with relatives when she was around four. She's around twelve now and she recently came to visit my uncle and I, along with my mother, father, and my nephew, were invited to see her. She didn't recognize me at all and it broke my heart that she didn't retain a single memory and that was a little twelve year old girl and not a seventeen year old teen block head. So I will go toe to toe with anyone who thinks that these flashbacks, despite the fact they were necessary to the plot, are even plausible if not a lazy way to further the story. And don't use the whole "it's a fictional character" shtick because then you invalidate the need to have this entire FICTIONAL story to begin with.
This video is exactly why I have a high level of disdain for the show. RWBY at one time had all the potential in the world. Ruby may be inexperienced and naive but she seemed like she would eventually earn the title of leader. Then the second half of volume 6 happened and she lost said potential due to many factors, ranging from poor writing, to bumblebee taking up most of the "important aspects" of the show. Now in volume 7, Oscar, a character who in my view doesn't truly serve a purpose, has effectively taken the spot of important main character that should have gone to Ruby. At this point, Ironwood is the only good guy I'm rooting for. Not Qrow, because he's no longer a viable character on the show, not Winter because honestly her fight with Cinder and Penny having the Maiden's powers took away my interest. I just wonder at this point how the writers will ruin Ironwood. Ok rant over.

Jaune can be used like underdog/comic relief and have an arc on undesrtood is role in the team (i is the support, the medic not the hero). Oscar can just not exist at all. This two characters steal Ruby development, agency and the good speches. Making them more relevant than her. If you delete/undermine Oscar and Jaune roles and give their scenes to Ruby the plot can move without problems.
Oh and let's not forget all the trouble they went through to get to Atlas and secure the relic only for James to give it back to the people who have been trying to get it there in the first place Well done rooster teeth 👏
Another alternative to the ending of Volume 6. Have Weiss claim that Qrow is a pro huntsman she personally hired to protect her. Cordovin would have had no choice but to let them go. If they needed a third person, send Jaune pretending to be her boyfriend or something so that he can help amplify their auras and heal them as they get attacked by grimm because they are carrying the grimm attracting relic with them. They get to Atlas tell Ironwood whats going on. He either sends an airship or calls Cordovin to escort the rest of them to Atlas. Afterall, it took a few hours at best to get from Argus to Atlas so the whole notion of not leaving her side for even a second is stupid beyond belief. It was really that simple but instead we got, shitty protag speeches, everyone becoming criminals, Jaune endangering the lives of his sister, in-law, and nephew, two wenches killing someone who was far superior to both of them in combat in literally every way, and then they get permission to go ahead after cleaning up the grimm attack they STARTED!!! Not to mention the flying grimm were still attacking the airships as they were leaving!!! And to think that there are people that genuinely believe that Ruby's character was left in a better place at the end of volume 6 then she was at the start of it.
Volume 6 was a turning point for Qrow as well. He was no longer the adult in the room. No longer a leader. No longer the Voice of reason and experience. No confidence. Reduced to just folliwing the kids around. Combined with the voice change in V7, it was like he was a completely new and different character. And definitely not for the better. Went along with Ruby's decision to lie to Ironwood. Couldn't confront Ironwood with the same authority he had in V3. Reduced to shipping fodder.
I don’t know if this counts as fixing, but if the way I think Ruby’s character should’ve evolved is by not at first seeing what being a huntress actually means. She would be so focused on battling evil and ridding the world of monsters she doesn’t see the true definition of what a huntress is, and it leads to people dying, and over the next few volumes she goes through this series of Grimm realizations and depressing comprehensions such as “ feeling guilty over letting people die by her impulsiveness, realizing that not every antagonist is doing malicious acts out of pure spite or hatred, and admitting that she fucked everyone around her over” but that’s how I think Ruby should’ve gone, if you guys got anything better i’d love to hear it
The problem with RWBY is that they don't know the the basics of good story structure (Not a text-book kinda but rather the simple logic of it) A Protagonist role is to either develop herself, the people around, experience the world through their eyes or all three of these things. Before you write a story it's good to have a character starting point, and a character-end point in mind. For RWBY either they burnt through these devices soo fast, their characters became boring, and you can't feel their progress. For Ruby from: Meek person, to Resolved, steadfast person. If you don't put emphasis on your character faults as well, and make it relevant for them to make *natural* mistake instead of plot stupid mistake, your "character" is just a plot device, nothing more. But to me the number 1 worst character in the show, is Raven: Her character makes no sense if you think it through. Let's see: She starts out as a bandit and ends up as a bandit with cowardace. Which makes no sense considering her attitude. Assuming STRQ could be a milkable spin-off, that could mean that every member of is, more or less has a finished character arc. How does she end up like this? Lazy writing of "Ozpin, Magic, Salem War, bla bla bla" which is made worse by the fact that she was written as a hypocritic character. Which doesn't work. Reason 1: She is supposedly cunning and smart, realistically she should have noticed this for dunno YEARS! and it's so out in the open that it just stupid. Reason 2: I refuse to believe it that STRQ had no impact on Raven considering she fucked Tai and had a baby. This shit is absolutely forced. The problem isn't that Raven left. The problem is that she left for such a garbagely written reason that simply does not match up with her supposed experience (The Tribe is the biggest fucking joke I've seen in a while, considering their are weak as shit yet she preaches "Strong live, weak die". Her character would have been so much better, if she left to find a way to defeat Salem 'cause she deduced that she could be immortal because of how long this cat&mouse game between Ozpin and Salem went. During to story insulting and belittling Yang not because of weakness or anything, but so her daughter hate her so when she dies she wouldn't mourn her or something.
I always thought the silver eyes just being a "Good People Kill Grimm" power to be kind of lame. Like they built them up like they were something special that different "warriors" had possessed through the ages. I expected them to be some sort of power-up beyond just being able to beat fodder enemies instantly. Like if I play Zelda and I get an item from a dungeon and all it lets me do is kill Bokoblins and nothing else, what was the point when I can just beat them normally. I've wanted for a long time to have a faction running parallel to Salem and Oz or Silver Eye users who are aiming for their own morally grey objective and use their eyes for less then good things based on whatever emotion flows with them stronger. Maria saying that it's all about peace and tranquility to use them is stupid, show me someone consumed by rage or overwhelming confidence in themselves using them but there being a drawback to what emotion activates them so that Ruby walks down this line of trying to morally correct but struggles with issues after the asswhooping that Salem hands Atlas. Let her have her sad shonen protagonist arc. It's better then what we're getting now.

He saves her life 3 times and to add insult to injury he almost died saving her from Tyrian because she got in the way trying to help when he told her not to interfere in the fight... so writers simply don't care quality of the story.
Ruby was one of the reasons I always looked forward to seeing new weapons, fighters and semblances. Because we had a in universe character acknowledging the cool shit that was made and shown in RWBY and not just a natural thing. She had a character back in Volume 1-2 I feel now? At worst, I dont think it is a good idea to use it as your main source of writing knowledge. Fine as a secondary source if that, but there is so many general inconsistencies, flat characterization, etc I find it difficult to recommend for anyone vaguely serious about the craft.

Psychologically speaking, she is likely dissociating Penny and what happened to V1 Penny. It's a common enough issue in trauma victims. Essentiially, they pretend nothing ever happened and try to force themselves to move on. Were Ruby one to bottle up her emotions to avoid processing them fully, then dissociating a different looking Penny from the one she saw wounded - and this is a new distinction that would further the dissociation, allowing her to justify it - one of MANY natural reactions would be to just pretend it didn't happen. Don't think about it, don't feel about it, just play like it never happened.
The mistake fake hatedom pseudo critics like Vexed make often is in saying 'This is how people react to X'. No. EVERYTHING has a RANGE of VARIOUS reaction possibilities. Up to and including NO REACTION AT ALL. Many soldiers who see their fellows die suffer PTSD. Some, however, do not. Likewise, to carry the example, many PTSD sufferers can react to loud sounds as 'triggers'. And many WON'T.
So mister writer, please acknowledge at SOME POINT that you are simply asserting one of a variety of possible reactions from Ruby.

Seems like writers just don't consider him to be necessary for the plot anymore. He was supposed to be the one Ruby can always rely on. Like, all these theories about him being her father are not without a reason: he gave her so much more attention than Yang. As well as saved her several times.
And then there is Vol 6 when he falls into despair. And it was such a good opportunity for Ruby to "grow" as a character: be supportive and help her damn uncle at once. But nope, she somewhat behaves like a rebellious brat in an "out of my way" style. Hell, she threatened to attack him at the beginning of Vol 6. I wonder how this didn't make his depression even worse.
After that it became clear writers just don't know what to do with him. In Vol 7 he literally has neither any interaction with his niece, nor any contribution to the main storyline, always in the background.

At least Deku from My Hero Academia is a Character who's just like Ruby but done so much better! We see his struggles, his breaking points (Because Deku has more than 1 breaking point in the series) and they make him have so many depths and layers as a main protagonist.
Deku is actively getting better with his powers episode after episode and we see his improvements from season 1. As for Ruby, we rarely see her train or even TALK about her silver eyes for 4 volumes and there are still many questions that are left unanswered.

Team JNR failed to defeat Neo who stole the relic while team RWBY beats (possibly murders) THE BEST HUNTSMEN IN ATLAS EASILY, and Qrow lost his friend over his own stupidity, lets Tyrian get away and gets arrested with Robin. It feels like everyone BUT team RWBY ends up being walking burdens and weights preventing RWBY to succeed.
To be fair, Neo has been proved to be significantly above RWBY since like... ever, so yeah, without counting magic users like maidens, Ozpin and Salem, Neo is just behind Qrow, Tyrian, Hazel and Clover (F for lucky boi) and Glynda.

"Ruby talks down to her uncle. Why?" Well, listen for the key word in her speech; "Adult". The writers are trying to give their child protagonist agency in the plot. How do you give your child protagonist agency if an "Adult" is in the way? They can't, so they make the adults incapacitated, evil, absent, or wrong. Ozpin, Taiyang, Qrow, and now Ironwood. This is nothing new for anime shows, but RWBY is the most egregious example I've seen in a while.
Meanwhile over in Star Wars Dave Filoni manages to do that without having to completely shit on the adults. The kid even manages to learn lessons along the way.

Other shows would simply make the kids special or seperate them from the adults so that arcs can happen. Like when all the jounin are conveniently busy in Naruto, when Ichigo has to infiltrate the soul society and later hueco mundo without the help of anyone stronger than himself, etc.
RWBY fails to explain why Ozpin and Qrow don't solo, or why anyone other than Oscar and Qrow even have to be there or how RWBY can even touch opponents on the level of Qrow or Ozpin.

But even in the examples you stated, they still had/ needed adult help to push through. In the case of Naruto, even though the Sasuke Rescue party defeated the Sound 5, they still needed the help of Jounins/ Jounin level allies to since their victories were near fatal/ near self-sacrificing. That arc showed their potential, but it also showed that the kids still had a ways to go. For Bleach it was moreso a Deus Ex Machina held a similar purpose to Naruto. But my point is that you can still give your kid/ inexperienced characters agency, without having to completely dismiss your more experienced characters.
The problem with Ruby isn't exactly her fault, but the mindset of the writers. Having Ruby do shitty things (yelling at her uncle, being a bitch to Ironwood, not doing anything while Tyrian is murdering people) isn't a bad thing, it can build character and it is good that she isn't morally perfect anymore. The problem is that the writers don't see these things as mistakes or wrongdoings. And this destroyes Ruby's character fast. They portray her as still perfectly good while her actions are morally wrong, and this makes viewers hate her... even more then before, when she was just a nothing character and stupid.

Harry, as time went on, grew to accept how others were instrumental to his victories, and made sacrifices on his behalf.
MCU Spidey thought he was doing right, and that he had everything figured out. Then it all blew up in front of his face, literally twice. Then when he tries to shift blame to Iron Man, Tony Stark destroys his arguments in less than 2 minutes. This humbles Peter into someone who could be a hero with more forethought and consideration.

Qrow is silent and does nothing even though his experience in this is longer than they have all been alive. I get he is in a bad place with the knowledge that the fight he has taken part in was basically pointless but to then just become a nothing character until a fight starts is not how it should go.
Ozma is acting like a child that ran away and hid as soon as the truth came out. please explain how this is how an immortal wizard acts who, from the flashback, already went through his slump years of depression and loss in previous lives. Does the merge apparently make Ozpin the child while the meat suit gets everything else handed to him.
Even Jaune, the leader or team JNR, seems to no longer have an opinion. I know he is not liked by many but in terms of his character he should be as good a leader as Ruby (just not good at making names for team moves). I honestly hoped that while they kept with Ozma’s plan Jaune would be the one against it, the voice against him and he is against following the new plan of a man who’s last one got Pyrrha killed (only reason he sticks around is to ensure he does not get another friend killed). Out of everyone he has suffered the most in recent years due to Ozpin.
All these other people that could be someone Ruby talks to about her decisions and looks to for input (no, bringing up her mum was not good cus he is just reinforcing her bad decision) are all nothing characters now that just nod and go along with what the girl who is very willing to self sacrifice says.
if it was not for the title of the show/team I would see no reason to put her as team leader especially since she skipped two years. Team Rwby is supposed to be (or at least many tell me) a reflection of team STRQ, maybe Ozpin should learn they did not turn out well and not to repeat having a girl very similar to her mother be the leader. Being an MC does not mean they need to be a leader, Most anime/manga can show you that.
You know what I would have loved? Jaune going behind everyone's backs and telling Ironwood the truth in secret. Why would he do this? Because of a sense of guilt and duty. Jaune cheated and lied his way into Beacon. He was unprepared and untrained and that came to a head when Pyrrha sent him away and subsequently died. At this point he just wants to protect those he has left but in doing so, he endangers the lives of his sister, his in-law and his nephew just so they can get to Atlas. After all that he has suffered through, I could absolutely see him laying everything on the table to Ironwood for no other reason then the fact that he doesn't want to end up like Oz who constantly withheld truths and secrets from many people. A rift and battle of ideals and how to be a good leader would have done wonders for Ironwood, Clover, Jaune, and Ruby as characters imo. When it came to telling the truth I was thinking Oscar would do it behind their back since he was basically forgotten for the first part so he would bond more with ironwood who did care and tried to help him and could work as a way to distance himself from ozma and how he does things. hell, team Rwby did not even really talk to him except for that really cringy part where they tried to set up Rosegarden (just before ruby let Oscar take over having to tell ironwood).
Jaune was a character they got scarred using cus they treated him as a mc in the first volume but in trying to fix it they made him basically just a joke character with a semblance to keep everyone else safe and a weapon transformation that makes no sense with his training. If set up well he could easily become a third party in this secret war. One that disagrees with Ozpins methods, treating people as pawns in a game of chess. But nah, look at all the milfs that want him all because of his stupid hair.

Yup. For 4 volumes, Team RWBY had _never_ beaten a Huntsman-level Human/Faunus opponent without help from others, excluding the tournament. Just low-level thugs from Junior, White Fang, and the Branwen tribe.
Actual threats were handled by Penny, Qrow, or the presence of a Maiden. But now they can handle the best of Atlas?
Even if the plot called for them to (somehow) win. They were handed that "win" waaaaay too easily.
AceOps acted like a bunch of emo handicapped idiots. Totally unprofessional. A far cry from the start of the volume.
While RWBY functioned as a well (mary-sue tainted) oiled team of awesome. AceOps were wrecked, RWBY barely a scratch.

The fight could have been over before it started if the AceOps operated as usual.

I actually like the dilemma Oscar faces with wondering if he will be the same person after all of this. And we do get little snippets of Oscars underlying personality like Ruby, but Ruby's is, in my opinion, unbearable at this point, due to the writers.
And yes, the mysterious apparition Ozpin is the main draw for the young boy. But, in my opinion, that is to Ruby's detriment.
I was interested in everything Ozpin from day one, and still am. And Oscar's mental struggles with their situation is just the icing on the cake for me.
Maybe both characters might not have much to work with, but I just find Ruby to be annoying at this point. I feel the exact opposite for Oscar. They have had so much time to properly build on her character, Oscar hasn't, and is still leagues less annoying than her.

Welcome to rwby, we also did not know anything about the world, watch the new volumes without watching the worlds of remnant before and you have NO information on the world at all. And if you HAVE watched world of remnant get ready for the inconsistencies and plot holes.
honestly, we really didn't. I'm so disappointed in how they've handled revealing the silver eyes storyline. We first knew about it in vol 1 chapter 1 or 2. They set it up so we were aware that her eyes are special. Then we have to wait until vol 3 for it to reveal itself and after 4 chapters we still have no in depth details on the origins of silver eyes. We could have had it with maria, but the excuse the writers came up with is that she doesn't know as much about it, and neither did her father.
The only thing keeping me with rwby is the summer storyline. I really hope they don't fuck it up, but who knows.

I know this isn't the point, but Ruby's voice has become notably MORE high pitched when in season 1 she sounded more natural. The voice directors need to let her actress dial it down a notch.

V1 Ruby sounded very natural although the voice acting was horrible horrible.
I remember being confused in V2 to why her voice suddenly changed and sounded more childlike.

But I feel V4-7 the voice actress has found a good place.

The writers don't understand that Ruby developing independantly doesn't mean disrespecting authority, like her uncle who's terrified of losing her (before they ruined him in the last volume). Then they completely trash her bond with Penny and the effect her death had on her. Then she lied to the only trustworthy person in authority (Ironwood) they could rely on and ruined their alliance. Ruby being inexperienced would be okay if they gave it due attention and consequences, buuuuut they don't. The Aesops fight was absolutely ridiculous.

Wasn’t Ruby’s ultimate character goal being a huntress? We need to see Salem use a Grimm to seriously injure either Ruby herself or someone close to her to both show the extent of Salem’s skills and give Ruby a reason to doubt her dream of being a huntress.

I don't think the writer knows what direction they should take the series next. Sometimes it looks like it's getting darker in tone and theme but then it suddenly shifts into "awesome battle sequences, friendship and support will win the day". They keep alluding to Salem as the ultimate evil but so far we've not seen much of her capabilities, we saw her cronies got some cool sequences tho. Honestly, i'd appreciate it if the writer make Ruby doubt her ability to judge people, i'd love to see Ruby having a friendship with someone only for them to totally betray her and Ruby's the one to blame for everything, sending her into an emotional state of paranoia about who she can and can't trust. Yang and Blake now only serve as shipping token because the community cares about lesbian licking each other more than they do about the plot and character growth because somehow holding hands can win PTSD. Qrow got reduced to a self-pity alcoholic even tho his entire first appearance set him up with the motif of "an alcoholic on appearance but is actually super competent and smart, a bonafide living legend" and now he's getting talked down to by a walking plot device.
The problem is they seem to be making things up as they go along and forget things that were pre-established. The writers fail at weaving coherent plot threads among many other things.

For me, I always like it when the main character gets beat up but gets back up to beat down their opponent. Not once have we seen Ruby bleed. I stopped watching RWBY at the end of season 3 and your commentary has reassured me that was a good decision.
RWBY was always a little cringe, but it had a lot of heart and some awesome Rule of Cool animation. Strip that away and it's another time sink with a toxic fandom, and this is a more entertaining alternative to reading Wikias to see what happens or if it'll turn around.

Ruby from a citizens perspective (and honestly my perspective) could be seen as an inexperienced, idiotic, cocky, whiny bad guy that is spoilt with how much shit she and her team get away with. Where did that more dimensional diverse Ruby from the start of Volume 6 go? She looked like she had so much potential too be a better growing leader...sigh...I get she's a kid but thats another point, shes a kid with little experience that should show signs of growth
I was telling people I started not liking team rwby when they was yelling at ozpin when they found out the truth about him and Salam.they never gave ozpin time to talk or say anything just yelling at him and ruby gets on my nerves the most when she preaches talking who's right and wrong and still not her knowing that Godzilla grim attack was her fought and the way ironwood is now and atlus and mental is in danger because of her and her team
I've been saying something similar about Vol 2's finale. Some fans don't understand why Ozpin's actions were called in to question while the council sided with Ironwood. Uh, because their character POV.
To the side characters, people who don't have audience perspective, it looked as though Oz showed favoritism to a team that his own school ranked as under-qualified, and they failed to prevent the Breach.

In-story, neither the Council nor James can make sense of Oz's decision to send Team RWBY. Oz's own school ranked them as under-qualified (which showed) and other than Weiss being an heiress, there's seemingly nothing exceptional about them. Unlike Harry Potter, for example, there's no 'Boy who Lived' fame going for them, and Silver Eyes are still myth.
Saying "they would have gone to MG anyway" is not a valid reason to withhold a more experienced team from being sent.
So in the eyes of James and the Council, Oz had serious Intel of criminal activity, and gave it to a bunch of rookies who fumbled and let the Breach happen. Excuses for this won't make sense. They don't know they are side characters and Team RWBY are the mains.

TBH Salem's "yo momma" joke could easily be something Ruby could cry about; just have Salem twist the knife with a "Oh she died most beautifully, as I [insert torture here]."
That kind of speech could act as a catalyst for attacking Ruby's admiration of her mom or shattering her own beliefs about what it means being a great huntress.
Overall they've watered Ruby down.
Ruby barely gets as nerdy as she used to about weapons, she doesn't get nearly as excitable or nervous as she used to, and her social awkwardness isn't really there.
The writers praise their characters but keep ruining them for the sake of the plot.
In fact with the way the ace ops fight went, are we sure team RWBY isn't getting subsumed by a hive mind?

Hell maybe have Salem tell that their adventures and victories were for nothing. Mistral actually fell due to a Faunus uprising from their own citizens and Argus fell because Caroline was overpowered by the Grimm and overtook the city.
They better explain SEW & what happened to Summer Rose in Volume 8, because:
1) they have been hype Summer since Vol.2,3,5,6,7.
2) Also explain who or what the Silver-eyed warriors is(like say, can they effect an powerful immortal grimm witch or not.)
When you take THIS long to reveal something lore critical...the interest kinda fizzles out. You get fatigued.

Basically, this. Ruby post-Volumes 6 and 7 is a confusing character to me. I liked her assertiveness and that she was finally stepping up in her role as a leader and, in a meta-sense, the story's protagonist. But for that to come across as a lack of understanding and compassion baffled me. If they're taking it the route of "the world's not a fairytale and even the so-called simple soul can become disillusioned with it", then that could honestly be fantastic. But, like you said, we're back to the waiting game to see where she ends up.

I think Ruby's stagnant personality could be explained into the show as being caused by Trauma.
Ruby is only 17-18 she was only 15 when she saw Penny and Pyrrha murdered, and saw a man get swallowed whole by a Grimm. Pretty damn traumatic. And children often experience stunted emotional growth when exposed to such trauma. The problem is that Rooster Teeth haven't even really addressed Volume 3 with Ruby. Jaune is entirely shaped by the events in Volume 3, his love for Pyrrha and grief at her death driving him forward. He acts the most human out of the students, reacting violently when Cinder taunted them, and showing understandable rage at Ozpin for basically causing Pyrrha's death.
I say Jaune should be the new Protagonist

See the problem I have with Ruby Rose is that it feels like almost everyone else in the show feels like a better main protagonist than her. Jaune, as boring and incompetant as he is, feels like a standard anime protagonist with a character arc. Weiss and Yang have family issues that they're dealing with. Blake has her whole thing going on with the White Fang. Pyrrha is a tragic heroine who feels obligated to take on a huge responsibility that ends up resulting in her death. Oscar is the reincarnation of a powerful wizard with a horrible, cyclical destiny. Even Nora and Ren want to kill the Grimm that destroyed their village. Ruby has some magic eyes and is supposed to be The Leader, but that's it.
Sure the Silver Eyes are talked up as this amazing ability possessed by legendary warriors, but how exactly is this any different from the Schnee Family Semblance, or even just a regular Semblance??? Ruby has no connection to the plot, and this was okay back in the early Volumes when we were establishing everybody's characters, but we're now almost 8 seasons in and we still don't know why she's even here or have any proper motivation for her to be a Huntress beyond "because I want to help people and Huntsmen are cool I guess". What's worse is that they established that she has this connection to her mother that is supposedly important and it has gone without development for years. Summer may as well not even be a character considering how little she matters to the plot. I just. Making your main character important, or at least interesting, is considered basic storytelling and the fact Rooster Teeth couldn't even manage that encapsulates how poorly they've handled this franchise after Monty's death.
Qrow and Oz should have been the ones to mentor Ruby

Okay, here's the long rant of mine about V7 in general, rather than Ruby specifically.
V7's ending and last few episodes kinda ruined the show for me, because there's really only two ways Volume 8 or 9 can end with the setup we've been provided and they both suck.
1.) Against all the odds, Salem is driven off and her Grimm armada is beaten back, with varying levels of collateral damage to Mantle and Atlas and who knows how many people dead.
This ending would pretty much suck all the drama and tension out of any final confrontation with Salem by the end, because the 'heroes' have already proven that they can face her down and defeat her as they are now. There's no reason for them to get any stronger, no reason to gather any other Relics or Maidens, they're fine just the way they are.
2.) Salem wins, her armada overruns Atlas and Mantle or, failing that, she kamikazes her island-sized Whale Grimm into Atlas and smashes it into Mantle. Some people escape, but only a small portion of the population overall. Most of the Atlas military is wrecked, their command structure is dead and now Salem has the Creation Relic Vault safely in her hands, all she needs is Penny.
This ending would suck because there is no way I can see the goodies, or even humanity itself, surviving the aftermath. The other 3 Kingdoms have been crippled in various ways; Vale is still wrecked from Volume 3, Mistral has lost most of their Hunters because Lionheart sold them out and Vacuo is a bunch of isolated small communities, easy pickings to a unified Grimm armada under Salem's leadership. Atlas is the only Kingdom able to form an effective defence as of right now and if it goes down, the sheer negativity spike from all over the world when the news reaches them (via communication or survivors from Atlas) will draw in masses of Grimm and likely overwhelm their weakened defences anyway.
This is why V7's ending does not work for me. What do you all think?
I think the later ending works best the villains haven't won since vol 3 and it's the most logical conclusion to really push salam as a threat
I prefer the Salem victory between the two endings since it makes the most sense what with how RT set up RWBY and it would be the ultimate message that not only was Ruby not ready but her deceit had helped Salem to win.
Lol who cares about Vale or Remnant anymore. Anyone else noticed how the enire world shrunk past season 3 or is it just me? I think that turning the whole history of Kingdoms and Hunters into a bad break break up beetween Salem and Ozpin was the worst development the show has made. It turned Remnant from a vast, mysterious and unexplored world with long history into some countryside with major events resolving around just two people. Because, at the end of the day anyone else was irrelevant.

As poorly Ruby has been handled through the series in terms of dynamic development, the notion of the *flat character* as the main lead isn’t an inherently bad thing. It’s just a type of character arc. Goku is one of the most beloved heroes in all of anime but he’s as flat as you can get with little to no character development.
What makes a good flat character arc is when they affect other characters and environment around them as opposed to themselves. Such as her friends, teammates, or even the villains can be developed because of the actions and beliefs of the flat character. It’s especially necessary for a long running series like RWBY.
But the problem here isn’t that Ruby is mostly portrayed as a flat character, I mean she is but it’s not why people have a problem with her. The problem is that she barely affects anyone around her. Sure you could argue about Weiss and Qrow but outside of that everyone else wouldn’t be affected even if you took ruby out out the equation.
The most recent character development Goku's had in YEARS was him being okay with Broly calling him Kakarot, indicated that their conflict brought him to be a bit more accepting and proud of his Saiyan heritage than he was before.
You serious? Goku got a shit ton of criticism during Super because he didn't have positive character development and even regressed depending on who you asked. Goku isn't "beloved" because he's well written, his popularity comes from Dragon Ball's iconic status which lets it get away with writing flaws that other anime don't. If Dragon Ball came out these days, Goku would get dismissed as a bland protagonist who has nothing to him aside from eating and liking fighting.

While you have a point about Dragon ball being given a pass, I still think Goku would be fine if he was created in these times. The fact that neither he or the show pretends that Goku is more than a dude that loves to fight helps. He isn't a traditional hero, threats come his way and it just gives him more narrative reasons to get stronger and fight bigger threats. Because he's so simple, any moment when he shows any positive traits outside of training and fighting stick with the fans. His anger at Krillan's death. Putting his faith in Gohan to defeat Cell. Pleading with Vegeta to help him stop Buu. There are more moments, but you get the point. He isn't deep, but that works with the show.

Only one who you could argue would be jaune because of his history with cinder, but Nora and Ren aren't needed for the story, the kiss was the only thing of impact they did last volume and honestly that should have been done after volume 4 anyone who think else is a fking idiot.

All I can describe RWBY right now is like a burning wrecked train still heading to its destination. The captain (*writers) is unsure where to go while the passengers (*fandom) scream in an already burning and busted train (*the show) with no stops to make for repair (*improvements).
I will fight tooth and nail over the Summer Rose flashbacks because they just don't make sense... AT ALL!! You don't retain memories from before you are three, maybe even four; the mind doesn't have that kind of space to spare when you are that young. I understand that concept very well with my niece. I practically raised her since she was a baby until she went off to live with relatives when she was around four. She's around twelve now and she recently came to visit my uncle and I, along with my mother, father, and my nephew, were invited to see her. She didn't recognize me at all and it broke my heart that she didn't retain a single memory and that was a little twelve year old girl and not a seventeen year old teen block head. So I will go toe to toe with anyone who thinks that these flashbacks, despite the fact they were necessary to the plot, are even plausible if not a lazy way to further the story. And don't use the whole "it's a fictional character" shtick because then you invalidate the need to have this entire FICTIONAL story to begin with.

This video is exactly why I have a high level of disdain for the show. RWBY at one time had all the potential in the world. Ruby may be inexperienced and naive but she seemed like she would eventually earn the title of leader. Then the second half of volume 6 happened and she lost said potential due to many factors, ranging from poor writing, to bumblebee taking up most of the "important aspects" of the show. Now in volume 7, Oscar, a character who in my view doesn't truly serve a purpose, has effectively taken the spot of important main character that should have gone to Ruby. At this point, Ironwood is the only good guy I'm rooting for. Not Qrow, because he's no longer a viable character on the show, not Winter because honestly her fight with Cinder and Penny having the Maiden's powers took away my interest. I just wonder at this point how the writers will ruin Ironwood.

For me the writers shot themselves in the foot with Jaune and Oscar. Jaune can be used like underdog/comic relief and have an arc on undesrtood is role in the team (i is the support, the medic not the hero). Oscar can just not exist at all.
This two characters steal Ruby development, agency and the good speches. Making them more relevant than her.
If you delete/undermine Oscar and Jaune roles and give their scenes to Ruby the plot can move without problems.
Oh and let's not forget all the trouble they went through to get to Atlas and secure the relic only for James to give it back to the people who have been trying to get it there in the first place

Another alternative to the ending of Volume 6. Have Weiss claim that Qrow is a pro huntsman she personally hired to protect her. Cordovin would have had no choice but to let them go. If they needed a third person, send Jaune pretending to be her boyfriend or something so that he can help amplify their auras and heal them as they get attacked by grimm because they are carrying the grimm attracting relic with them. They get to Atlas tell Ironwood whats going on. He either sends an airship or calls Cordovin to escort the rest of them to Atlas. Afterall, it took a few hours at best to get from Argus to Atlas so the whole notion of not leaving her side for even a second is stupid beyond belief. It was really that simple but instead we got, shitty protag speeches, everyone becoming criminals, Jaune endangering the lives of his sister, in-law, and nephew, two wenches killing someone who was far superior to both of them in combat in literally every way, and then they get permission to go ahead after cleaning up the grimm attack they STARTED!!! Not to mention the flying grimm were still attacking the airships as they were leaving!!! And to think that there are people that genuinely believe that Ruby's character was left in a better place at the end of volume 6 then she was at the start of it.
Volume 6 was a turning point for Qrow as well. He was no longer the adult in the room. No longer a leader. No longer the Voice of reason and experience. No confidence. Reduced to just folliwing the kids around.
Combined with the voice change in V7, it was like he was a completely new and different character. And definitely not for the better.
Went along with Ruby's decision to lie to Ironwood. Couldn't confront Ironwood with the same authority he had in V3. Reduced to shipping fodder.
I don’t know if this counts as fixing, but if the way I think Ruby’s character should’ve evolved is by not at first seeing what being a huntress actually means. She would be so focused on battling evil and ridding the world of monsters she doesn’t see the true definition of what a huntress is, and it leads to people dying, and over the next few volumes she goes through this series of Grimm realizations and depressing comprehensions such as “ feeling guilty over letting people die by her impulsiveness, realizing that not every antagonist is doing malicious acts out of pure spite or hatred, and admitting that she fucked everyone around her over” but that’s how I think Ruby should’ve gone, if you guys got anything better i’d love to hear it
The problem with RWBY is that they don't know the the basics of good story structure (Not a text-book kinda but rather the simple logic of it)
A Protagonist role is to either develop herself, the people around, experience the world through their eyes or all three of these things. Before you write a story it's good to have a character starting point, and a character-end point in mind.
For RWBY either they burnt through these devices soo fast, their characters became boring, and you can't feel their progress.
For Ruby from: Meek person, to Resolved, steadfast person. If you don't put emphasis on your character faults as well, and make it relevant for them to make *natural* mistake instead of plot stupid mistake, your "character" is just a plot device, nothing more.
But to me the number 1 worst character in the show, is Raven:
Her character makes no sense if you think it through.
Let's see: She starts out as a bandit and ends up as a bandit with cowardace. Which makes no sense considering her attitude. Assuming STRQ could be a milkable spin-off, that could mean that every member of is, more or less has a finished character arc. How does she end up like this?
Lazy writing of "Ozpin, Magic, Salem War, bla bla bla" which is made worse by the fact that she was written as a hypocritic character. Which doesn't work.
Reason 1: She is supposedly cunning and smart, realistically she should have noticed this for dunno YEARS! and it's so out in the open that it just stupid.
Reason 2: I refuse to believe it that STRQ had no impact on Raven considering she fucked Tai and had a baby. This shit is absolutely forced.
The problem isn't that Raven left. The problem is that she left for such a garbagely written reason that simply does not match up with her supposed experience (The Tribe is the biggest fucking joke I've seen in a while, considering their are weak as shit yet she preaches "Strong live, weak die".
Her character would have been so much better, if she left to find a way to defeat Salem 'cause she deduced that she could be immortal because of how long this cat&mouse game between Ozpin and Salem went. During to story insulting and belittling Yang not because of weakness or anything, but so her daughter hate her so when she dies she wouldn't mourn her or something.
I'm betting Penny's back she needs to die again to give Ruby the maiden powers

I always thought the silver eyes just being a "Good People Kill Grimm" power to be kind of lame. Like they built them up like they were something special that different "warriors" had possessed through the ages. I expected them to be some sort of power-up beyond just being able to beat fodder enemies instantly. Like if I play Zelda and I get an item from a dungeon and all it lets me do is kill Bokoblins and nothing else, what was the point when I can just beat them normally.
I've wanted for a long time to have a faction running parallel to Salem and Oz or Silver Eye users who are aiming for their own morally grey objective and use their eyes for less then good things based on whatever emotion flows with them stronger. Maria saying that it's all about peace and tranquility to use them is stupid, show me someone consumed by rage or overwhelming confidence in themselves using them but there being a drawback to what emotion activates them so that Ruby walks down this line of trying to morally correct but struggles with issues after the asswhooping that Salem hands Atlas. Let her have her sad shonen protagonist arc. It's better then what we're getting now.
Problem is,
CRWBY is treating RWBY like a Seinen with a Shonen illusion.
Why do you think the number of fights have decreased? They'd rather tell a more serious and mature
story than embrace the Shonen foundation Monty placed down.
I definitely agree with you. Ruby Rose was in fact very disrespectful to her uncle.. He saves her life 3 times and to add insult to injury he almost died saving her from Tyrian because she got in the way trying to help when he told her not to interfere in the fight... so writers simply don't care quality of the story.
Ruby dissing her uncle really pissed me off. I really wanted Qrow to beat up all of them.
Qrow's not gonna hurt his nieces.
No matter how much they hurt him.

Ruby was one of the reasons I always looked forward to seeing new weapons, fighters and semblances. Because we had a in universe character acknowledging the cool shit that was made and shown in RWBY and not just a natural thing. She had a character back in Volume 1-2 I feel now? Nah.....do know how to describe Ruby other than being a talk no jutsu, "do whats right" echo chamber.
